HISTORY

AL U

www.calvulcans.com 5

SEASON OUTLOOK In 2010, Cal U won its third PSAC Championsh ip and made its fifth appearance in the NCAA T o u r n a m e n t . From that team, 15th-year head coach Mike Conte returns eight position starters, including ABCA Gold Glove-winn ing junior Troy Handza, and a

wealth of talent on the pitching staff, including ABCA All-American senior Randy Sturgill. Gone from that team is right fielder Sam DiMatteo, who will head to spring training with the Washington Nationals organization this year. DiMatteo finished his career as the all-time leader in hits, doubles, runs and steals in school history. “We’re not looking for a single person to replace what he [DiMatteo] brought to the table,“ said Conte. “We’re looking for everybody in the lineup to contribute more to try to equate the loss.” Leading the way is Handza who, like DiMatteo, features a unique combination of power and speed. In his sophomore campaign, the 6-3 Handza hit at a .388 clip with 18 doubles, two triples, 11 homers, 61 RBI and 61 runs, while also converting 32-of-35 stolen base attempts. Joining Handza in the outfield will be a pair of seniors in Chuck Faust and Sean Welsh, and freshman Ben Carson. Last season, Faust and Welsh combined to hit .295 with eight homers and 54 RBI. “We’re very athletic in the outfield,” said Conte. “We have an older group with a great deal of experience.” The infield returns completely intact and features a trio of seniors. First baseman Adam Links, second baseman Aaron Ordy and shortstop Casey Teagarden are joined by sophomore third baseman Evan King. In 2010, Links hit .339 with 13 doubles, three homers, 37 RBI and 37 runs to earn All-PSAC West Second-Team laurels. Teagarden ended 2010 just behind Links with a .333 average after recording 50 hits in 150 at-bats. He also stole 23 bases. King, who delivered the game-winning hit in the PSAC Championship, finished the season with the third-highest average on the team, .346. Ordy started all 52 games last season and finished the year batting .289. The Vulcans return All-PSAC West Second-Team sophomore Kyle Petty at catcher. In limited time last year, Petty hit .324 with seven doubles, three homers and 15 RBI. Senior Eric

Berringer, transfer junior J.B. Sapienza and freshman Devin Dellinger provide depth behind Petty. With four seniors that can log a large amount of innings, Conte is optimistic about the Vulcans’ 2011 pitching staff saying, “On the mound, we have a collection of very good, e x p e r i e n c e d talent.” Sturgill will once again anchor the starting rotation after finishing 9-1 last season with a 3.19 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 79.0 innings and earning PSAC West Pitcher of the Year honors.Other pitchers expected to see significant time include sophomore Tyler Zimm, who returns after completing his rookie campaign with a 6-2 record and a 4.26 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 61.1 innings. Junior Jim Kirker threw 25.2 innings last season, mainly in relief, and finished with a 2-0 record, three saves and a 4.21 ERA. A trio of transfers are expected to contribute to the pitching staff as well. Senior Ryan MacNamara should see significant innings during the weekends behind Sturgill after transferring from Southern Mississippi. Junior Eric Francis and sophomore Kyle Thomas are expected to provide quality innings. Freshman Kyle Weary will be able to provide a different look to opposing hitters as he uses a submarine approach. Carson, Petty and Welsh will also have the possibility to see time on the mound. After a successful season in 2010, don’t expect the Vulcans to rest on their laurels in 2011. “You need to be cautious,” said Conte. “When you’re the state champions, you have a mark on your back and everybody wants to play their best game against you.”

titles in 2001 and 2002 after posting a then-school record 16 conference wins. Outfielder Bryan Hartung was an all-conference player on the 2001 team before finishing his career as the school’s all-time leader in homers and RBI. Hartung became the first Conte-coached player inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. During his 14 seasons as head coach, Conte has coached 88 different All-PSAC West players, five PSAC West Athletes of the Year and three ABCA All-Americans. In addition to successful players on the diamond, he also has coached the only Academic All-American in program history and the only two players to receive the academic Top 10 Award from PSAC. Since the start of the 2000, a total of 14 Vulcans have played professional baseball. Pitcher Ian Heisel played two seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates system before joining former Cal U teammate Patrick Sadler in the Frontier League. Prior to taking the head-coaching position in 1997, Conte served as an assistant coach for long-time Vulcan mentor Chuck Gismondi, who holds the school record for wins and games coached. A native of nearby Brownsville, Conte was a two-time all-conference outfielder at Virginia Tech. As a junior, he led the team with a .352 average and received an offer to play with the Baltimore Orioles, which he declined. Conte returned to school for his senior season and led the team in triples, homers, RBI, stolen bases and at-bats. He finished his career and still ranks fifth in Virginia Tech history with 43 career homers. Following the 1989 college season, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 19th round and played five seasons in the A’s minor-league system before retiring after the 1993 season. Conte completed his undergraduate degree in 1990. Following his playing career, he started his coaching career in 1994 at Cal U as an assistant and completed his master’s degree in Geography and Regional Planning. Conte resides in California with his wife Jamie and their four children, Louden, Payton, Jessie and Nina.

A veteran of 17 years with the California University of Pennsylvania baseball program, Mike Conte has continued the tradition of the Vulcans as one of the most successful and stable teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Entering his 15th season as head coach, Conte has totaled a 394-270-4 record for an average of over 28 victories per season. While in the dugout, he has guided the Vulcans to six PSAC Western Division titles and 10 PSAC Tournament appearances with conference crowns in 2004 and 2010. Last year, Cal U captured the PSAC title in walk-off fashion and made its fifth all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament before finishing the season with a 34-18 overall record. Conte also earned PSAC West Coach of the Year laurels for the sixth time in his career. In 2007, Conte guided the Vulcans to a school-record 36 wins, a fourth-straight divisional title, a second-place finish in the PSAC Tournament and the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament appearance since 1983. Conte led Cal U to four-straight PSAC West championships from 2004-07 with the first PSAC Championship in recent program history in 2004. The championship team of 2004 featured two-time Academic All-American and PSAC West Player of the Year Mike Larson. Larson was an all-conference outfielder/pitcher after leading the team in average, homers, RBI and ERA. The Vulcans won back-to-back PSAC West

A graduate of rival Slippery Rock University, Chris Squeglia enters his third season on the coaching staff with the California University of Pennsylvania baseball program. Squeglia was a two-year player for The Rock after playing two seasons at Allegheny College, a Division III program in Meadville, Pa. In two seasons with The Rock, he posted a 7-10 record in 20 appearances (17 starts) with a 4.94 career ERA in 100.2 innings. During the 2008 season, Squeglia was an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic (PSAC) West Second-Team selection after leading the team in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts and complete games. Squeglia, who missed the 2006 campaign due to Tommy John surgery, started his college career at Allegheny and compiled 10 wins in two years with the Gators. As a freshman

in 2004, he earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Honorable Mention. In his first year on the college mound, Squeglia threw four complete games and had a 5-1 record with a 4.67 ERA. While at Shaler High School, he earned all-section laurels and was twice named Team Most Valuable Pitcher. As a senior, he helped lead the Titans to a runner-up finish in the WPIAL and received Post-Gazette North all-star honors. He completed his undergraduate degree in Finance from Slippery Rock in 2008, and completed his master’s degree in Sport Management at Cal U in 2010. Squeglia’s younger brother, Jon (2006-09), was a four-year pitcher for the Vulcans and ranks third in school history in wins.

CHRIS BRUNSON11th Year at Cal [email protected]

A former player for the Vulcans, Chris Brunson enters his 11th season as an assistant coach with the California University of Pennsylvania baseball program in 2011. Throughout his career, Brunson has coached 22 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West pitchers. Last season, he coached All-American and PSAC West Pitcher of the Year Randy Sturgill, who posted a 9-1 record and 94 strikeouts in 79.0 innings. He made an instant impact when joining the coaching staff in 2001, as in his first season the Vulcans led the conference in ERA. The following year, hurler Ryan Balan led NCAA Division II with a 0.91 ERA in 60.0 innings and was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. Under Brunson’s tutelage, pitcher Ian Heisel posted a career-high eight wins in 2004 to

help lead Cal U to its first PSAC Tournament Championship in 25 years. He has also coached three-time All-PSAC West selection Chris Doerschner, who finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in innings pitched. Brunson was a two-year player for the Vulcans and received captain status his senior season. As a junior in 1999, he led the pitching staff in both ERA and innings pitched before posting five wins as a senior. A native of Greensburg, Pa., Brunson earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from Cal U in 2000. He later completed his master’s degree in 2002, majoring in Geography and Regional Planning. He currently resides in Mt. Pleasant, Pa., with his wife Heather and their three daughters, Haylie, Krista and Kendra.

2010 REVIEW

The Vulcans posted one of the most thrilling seasons in school history, winning the PSAC Championship in walk-off fashion and narrowly missing their first-ever appearance in the College World Series. Under PSAC West Coach of the Year Mike Conte, Cal U finished the year with a 34-18 overall record and 17-7 mark in divisional play. Redshirt sophomore Randy Sturgill anchored the pitching staff with one of the best seasons by a hurler in program history. He finished the year with a 9-1 record and 3.19 ERA in 79.0 innings with a conference-best 94 strikeouts. After the season, he was selected an ABCA All-American and the ABCA Atlantic Region and PSAC West Pitcher of the Year. The Vulcans offense was led by a pair of record-setting outfielders in Sam DiMatteo and Troy Handza. DiMatteo posted a .400 average with 27 doubles, 11 homers, 53 RBI, and 43 stolen bases as a senior to earn all-region honors from ABCA, Daktronics and NCBWA. For his efforts in leading Cal U to its first conference title in six years, he was named the PSAC Tournament MVP. DiMatteo finished his Vulcan career as the program’s all-time leader in hits, runs scored and stolen bases. Handza set single-season school records with both 61 runs scored and 61 RBI. Only a sophomore, he hit at a .388 clip with 18 doubles, 11 homers and 32 steals to earn All-PSAC West First-Team honors. Handza also earned all-region laurels from ABCA, Daktronics and NCBWA. For his defensive prowess, Handza was a recipient of the ABCA Rawlings Gold Glove. Playing at Point Stadium in Johnstown, the Vulcans captured their first PSAC Championship

since 2004 with a two-out, walk-off single by freshman third baseman Evan King against nationally-ranked Kutztown. In the first game of the tournament, freshman catcher Kyle Petty delivered a two-out, walk-off single against Mansfield. Cal U earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament and posted one-run victories over the host Golden Bears and Seton Hill to finish the season with the second-most wins in school history.

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at

the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan baseball. I am confident that Coach Mike Conte, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the baseball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final

standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration.

The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as CONSOL Energy Park. Baseball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010-2011 season and that you will support all of these young athletes

enthusiastically.

ACADEMICS Cal U student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2009-10 season, five PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and two NCAA regional trophies with nine team and 14 individual appearances in NCAA post-season play. The success continued as Cal U finished second in the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 205 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-straight semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Cal U also featured 16 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections highlighted by four Academic All-Americans. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophomore athletics and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible for the academic honor, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport. Cal U ranked sixth among the 16-member conference with 141 scholar-athletes. The baseball team had seven players earning PSAC Scholar-Athlete status.
