2011 REVIEWABOUT CAL U

SEASON PREVIEW

2012 PREVIEW

With the departure of the all-time winningest pitcher in school history and six position starters, Cal U will have a new look in 2012. Under 16th-year head coach Mike Conte, the Vulcans will rely on a corps group of veterans and plenty of new faces to lead them to an appearance in the PSAC Tournament. With 142 career starts, senior Troy Handza anchors the lineup and solidifies the outfield. He led the team in homers, RBI and total bases last season, while ranking third in the PSAC with 24 steals. Handza enters the season ranked second all-time in school history in runs and stolen bases. Sophomores Ben Carson and John Orr enter the spring as the probable starters at the corner outfield positions. Carson made 21 starts last year and figures to steal at least 20 bases as a full-time starter. Orr appeared in 14 games last year, primarily as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement. In the infield, senior Kyle Bowser is the only returning player with experience. He enters the spring as the projected starter at second base after hitting a career-high .369 last season while primarily the designated hitter. The corner infield positions are projected to feature a pair of transfers in junior A.J. Robinson and sophomore Chuck Gasti. Robinson figures to be in the middle of the order with his ability to hit for average and power. Gasti displayed good contact and patience during fall practices after previously playing at Cleveland State. Both Gasti and Robinson also are versatile enough to shift to the corner outfield positions, as junior Kyle Petty figures to play an infield corner position while not on the mound. Petty posted a career year both at the plate and on the mound in 2011. Primarily a catcher and relief pitcher, he started games at four different positions last year. He finished the year with a .351 average with eight extra-base hits, 20 RBI and 21 runs. With Petty shifting roles, senior J.B. Sapienza is the only returning catcher with college experience. He appeared in 10 games last year after playing the previous two years at Southern Maryland. Freshmen Kris Fielding, Jared Grove and Will Kaufman are

expected to see action behind the plate this season. Freshman Matt Peters looks to start at shortstop after displaying excellent glove work and a solid bat during fall practices. After losing three conference-day starting pitchers, Conte will look to juniors Petty and Kyle Thomas to anchor the starting rotation. Thomas made 10 starts last year and displayed his durability by tossing three complete-game shutouts. He finished last season second on the team in wins, ERA and innings pitched. Petty has overpowered opposing batters while pitching primarily out of the bullpen the last two years. He has registered six saves and 55 strikeouts while making only four starts in his career. The second-day starters in conference games could feature a plethora of newcomers mixed with veterans changing roles. Freshman G.J. Senchak opens the spring as a viable option in the starting rotation after being a three-time, first-team all-conference player at New Castle High School. After pitching in only seven games last year, Francis opens the year as a viable option as a starter. He previously was a first-team all-region selection while pitching at Mercyhurst North East. Seniors Pat Gannon and Jim Kirker have starting experience, but have developed into various roles in the bullpen. Gannon has made 13 relief appearances over the last two years, while Kirker boasts a 2.27 ERA in his career as a reliever. Cal U will also look at freshmen Luke Burton, Andre Jones, Dave Kucenic, Corey Robinson and Justin Taylor to help fill roles in the rotation and bullpen. The Vulcans feature a trio of pitchers with closing experience in senior Ryan Hulme, Kirker and Petty. Hulme will open 2012 as the closer after posting two saves and a 2.13 ERA last season. By playing several preseason nationally-ranked opponents during the spring trip, the Vulcans will rely on their returning corps of players while settling on roles for the newcomers. Cal U should then appear set to make its 11th appearance at the PSAC Tournament in the last 12 years.

A veteran of 18 years with the California University of Pennsylvania baseball program, Mike Conte has continued the tradition of the Vulcans as one of the most successful and stable teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Entering his 16th season as head coach, Conte has totaled a 424-288-4 record for an average of over 28 victories per season. While in the dugout, he has guided the Vulcans to six PSAC Western Division titles and 11 PSAC Tournament appearances with conference crowns in 2004 and 2010. In 2010, Cal U captured the PSAC title in walk-off fashion and made its fifth all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament before finishing the season with a 34-18 overall record. Conte also earned PSAC West Coach of the Year laurels for the sixth time in his career. In 2007, Conte guided the Vulcans to a school-record 36 wins, a fourth-straight divisional title, a second-place finish in the PSAC Tournament and the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament appearance since 1983. Conte led Cal U to four-straight PSAC West championships from 2004-07 with the first PSAC Championship in 25 years. The championship team of 2004 featured two-time Academic All-American and PSAC West Player of the Year Mike Larson. Larson was an all-conference outfielder/pitcher after leading the team in average, homers, RBI and ERA. The Vulcans won back-to-back PSAC West titles in 2001 and 2002

after posting a then-school record 16 conference wins. Outfielder Bryan Hartung was an all-conference player on the 2001 team before finishing his career as the school’s all-time leader in homers and RBI. Hartung became the first Conte-coached player inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. During his 15 seasons as head coach, Conte has coached 92 All-PSAC West players, five PSAC West Athletes of the Year and three ABCA All-Americans. In addition to successful players on the diamond, he also has coached the only Academic All-American in program history and the only two players to receive the academic Top 10 Award from PSAC. Since the start of the 2000 season, a total of 14 Vulcans have played professional baseball. Last season, three members of the 2010 PSAC Championship team made their professional debuts. After a record-breaking spring with the Vulcans last year, pitcher Randy Sturgill signed with the Lake Erie Crushers of the Frontier League. Sturgill and record-setting outfielder Sam DiMatteo (Traverse City Beach Bums) are scheduled to continue their professional careers in the Frontier League in 2012. Prior to taking the head-coaching position in 1997, Conte served as an assistant coach for long-time Vulcan mentor Chuck Gismondi, who set then-school records for wins and games coached. A native of nearby Brownsville, Conte was a two-time all-conference

outfielder at Virginia Tech. As a junior, he led the team with a .352 average and received an offer to play with the Baltimore Orioles, which he declined. Conte returned to school for his senior season and led the team in triples, homers, RBI, stolen bases and at-bats. He finished his career and still ranks fifth in Virginia Tech history with 43 career homers. Following the 1989 college season, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 19th round and played five seasons in the A’s minor-league system before retiring after the 1993 season. Conte completed his undergraduate degree in 1990. Following his professional playing career, he started his coaching career in 1994 at Cal U as an assistant and completed his master’s degree in Geography and Regional Planning. Conte resides in California with his wife Jamie and their four children, Louden, Payton, Jessie and Nina.

COACHING STAFF

A former player for the Vulcans, Chris Brunson enters his 12th season as an assistant coach with the California University of Pennsylvania baseball program in 2011. Throughout his career, Brunson has coached 22 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West pitchers. Last season, he coached All-American and two-time PSAC West Pitcher of the Year Randy Sturgill, who set single-season school records with 10 wins and 107 strikeouts last year. Sturgill also broke the all-time school record for victories before signing with the Lake Erie Crushers of the Frontier League. In his first season in professional baseball, Sturgill finished with a 6-1 record and a 3.33 ERA in 16 appearances (seven starts). Brunson made an instant impact when joining the coaching staff in 2001, as the Vulcans led the

conference in ERA during his first season. The following year, hurler Ryan Balan led NCAA Division II with a 0.91 ERA in 60.0 innings and was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. Under Brunson’s tutelage, pitcher Ian Heisel posted a career-high eight wins in 2004 to help lead Cal U to its first PSAC Tournament Championship in 25 years. He has also coached three-time All-PSAC West selection Chris Doerschner, who finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in innings pitched. Brunson was a two-year player for the Vulcans and received captain status his senior season. As a junior in 1999, he led the pitching staff in both ERA and innings pitched before posting five wins as a senior. A native of Greensburg, Pa., Brunson earned his

undergraduate degree in business administration from Cal U in 2000. He later completed his master’s degree in 2002, majoring in Geography and Regional Planning. He currently resides in Mt. Pleasant, Pa., with his wife Heather and their three daughters, Haylie, Krista and Kendra.

Following a standout career at Rider (N.J.), Mason Heyne enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Cal U baseball team in 2012. Heyne was a four-year starting infielder for the Broncs and helped

lead the program to pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) titles and two appearances in the NCAA Regional Tournament. He finished his career as school’s all-time leader with 186 RBI and ranked fourth with 247 hits. Heyne also tied for seventh in Rider history with 24 career homers after posting 11 homers as a sophomore. As a junior, Heyne helped lead the Broncs to a school-record 36 victories and a second MAAC crown in three years. He finished the year with 21 doubles, just one double shy of tying the single-season school record, and set career highs with

56 RBI and 45 runs scored. As Heyne was breaking the school record for RBI last season, Rider finished with 33 wins to mark only the second time in school history that the team posted back-to-back 30-win campaigns (1994-95). Originally from Shrewsbury, Pa., Heyne posted 13 homers as a senior at Susquehannock High School to earn York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association (YAIAA) Player of the Year honors. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communication from Rider in 2011 and is pursuing his master’s degree in sport management at Cal U.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

BUILDING CHARACTER. BUILDING CAREERS. California University of Pennsylvania is a diverse, caring and scholarly learning community dedicated to excellence in the liberal arts, science and technology, and professional studies. For more than 150 years Cal U has been known for its educational excellence and for its commitment to the core values of Integrity, Civility and Responsibility. At Cal U, students are our first priority. As an undergraduate, students can choose from more than 150 programs of study in three undergraduate colleges. Whether one is interested in using robotic technology in the field of engineering or helping to shape the future as an early childhood educator, students will find an academic program perfect for them. When our core values of Integrity, Civility and Responsibility are coupled with real-world training, we see a big difference in the types of jobs our graduates get. To advance our mission of building the character and careers of students, Cal U relies upon committed faculty, motivated students, challenging programs and exceptional facilities. Our Character Education Institute provides character education to Cal U students, faculty and staff, and corporate training to regional organizations and businesses. The institute serves as a resource center for education majors, and assists school districts and local organizations in advancing character development.

For 10-straight semesters, Cal U athletic programs have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher.

Last year, the Vulcans made 11 team and 11 individual appearances in NCAA postseason play.

A total of 225 Cal U student-athletes, representing all sports were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Cal U Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 240 athletes earned the honor for the Fall 2010 semester.

A combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U, representing all sports, were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year.

The Vulcans featured 12 Capital One Academic All-District selections during the 2010-11 academic year.

On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852.

He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning.

In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received

the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan baseball. I am confident that Coach Mike Conte, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the baseball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second place- finish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the Fall 2011 semester, a total of 239 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Cal U Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 240 student-athletes earned the honor during previous fall semester. For the 11th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as CONSOL Energy Park. Baseball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2012 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

The University is inspired by its core values of Integrity, Civility and Responsibility and is guided by its Bill of Rights and Responsibilities: We have the right to safety and security; We have the responsibility to ensure the safety and security of others; We have the right to be treated with respect; We have the responsibility to treat others with respect; We have the right to expect the best; We have the responsibility to give our best; We have the right to be treated fairly; We have the responsibility to treat others fairly. To advance its ultimate mission of building the character and careers of students, the University shall focus its efforts on three goals: student achievement and success, institutional excellence, and community service.
