Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan baseball. I am confident that Coach Mike Conte, his staff and the play-ers will continue to build upon the baseball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful cam-pus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Confer-ence’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Trophy is emblematic of athletic supremacy in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference—the PSAC, the premier Divi-sion II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this

magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the Fall 2009 academic semester, a total of 201 California Uni-versity of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Vulcan Ath-letic Director Honor Roll. For the seventh-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the edu-cation occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college educa-tion takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as CONSOL Energy Park. Baseball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far re-moved from their sport, but they have carried with them the im-portant life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010 season and that you will sup-port all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2008-09 season, six PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and four NCAA regional trophies with eight team and 15 individual ap-pearances in NCAA post-season play. The success has continued through the fall 2009 semester as the Vulcans claimed three NCAA Regional titles. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 201 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Fall 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the seventh-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In the fall, women’s golf posted the highest team GPA at 3.58 and featured all eight players on the Honor Roll. On the men’s side, the baseball team posted top GPA of the seven sports at 3.18 with 21 players holding a 3.00 GPA or better. In terms of pure numbers during the fall, women’s track & field led all 16 sports with 39 representatives on the Honor Roll, followed by football (24) and baseball. Women’s golf led all programs with 100 percent of its team on the Honor Roll, followed by women’s cross country (87 percent; 13-of-15) and softball (85 percent; 17-of-20). Cal U also boasted 22 student-athletes that registered a perfect 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2009 semester. Last year, Cal U featured nine ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections, high-lighted by the school’s first Academic All-American since 2006. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached soph-omore athletic and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.

Year and two Rookies of the Year. In addition to successful players on the diamond, he also has coached the only Academic All-American in program history and the only two players to receive the academic Top 10 Award from PSAC. Since the start of the 2000, a total of 13 Vulcans have played professional baseball. Pitcher Ian Heisel played two seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates system before joining former Cal U teammate Patrick Sadler in the Frontier League. Prior to taking the head-coaching position in 1997, Conte served as an assistant coach for long-time Vulcan mentor Chuck Gismondi, who holds the school record for wins and games coached. A native of nearby Brownsville, Conte was a two-time all-conference outfielder at Virginia Tech. As a junior, he led the team with a .352 average and received an offer to play with the Baltimore Orioles, which he declined. Conte returned to school for his senior season and led the team in triples, homers, RBI, stolen bases and at-bats. He finished his career and still ranks fifth in Virginia Tech history with 43 career homers. Following the 1989 college season, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 19th round and played five seasons in the A’s minor-league system before retiring after the 1992 season. Conte completed his undergraduate degree in 1990. Following his playing career, he started his coaching career in 1994 at Cal U as an assistant and completed his master’s degree in Geography and Regional Planning. Conte resides in California with his wife Jamie and their four children, Louden, Payton, Jessie and Nina.

A veteran of 16 years with the California University of Pennsylvania baseball program, Mike Conte has continued the tradition of the Vulcans as one of the most successful and stable teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic C o n f e r e n c e (PSAC). Entering his 14th season as head coach, Conte has totaled a 360-252-4

record for an average of over 27 victories per season. While in the dugout, he has guided the Vulcans to six PSAC Western Division titles and nine PSAC Tournament appearances with a conference crown in 2004. Cal U finished last season with a 32-15 overall record, marking the program’s 10th-straight year with at least 27 wins. Six Vulcans received All-PSAC West recognition. In 2007, Conte guided the Vulcans to a school-record 36 wins, a fourth-straight divisional title, a second-place finish in the PSAC Tournament and the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament appearance since 1983. Conte also earned PSAC West Coach of the Year laurels for the fifth time in his career. Conte led Cal U to four-straight PSAC West championships from 2004-07 with the first PSAC Championship in recent program history in 2004. The championship team of 2004 featured two-time Academic All-American and PSAC West Player of the Year Mike Larson. Larson was an all-conference outfielder/pitcher after leading the team in average, homers, RBI and ERA. The Vulcans won back-to-back PSAC West titles in 2001 and 2002 after posting a then-school record 16 conference wins. Outfielder Bryan Hartung was an all-conference player on the 2001 team before finishing his career as the school’s all-time leader in hits, homers, RBI and runs scored. Hartung became the first Conte-coached player inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. During his 14 seasons as head coach, Conte has coached 46 different All-PSAC West players, five PSAC West Players of the

A former player for the Vulcans, Chris Brunson enters his 10th season as an assistant coach with the California University of Pennsylvania baseball program in 2010. Throughout his career, Brunson has coached 13 different All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West pitchers. Last season, he coached a pair of All-PSAC selections. He made an instant impact when joining the coaching staff in 2001, as in his first season the Vulcans led the conference in ERA. The following year, hurler Ryan Balan led NCAA Division II with a 0.91 ERA in 60.0 innings and was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. Under Brunson’s tutelage, pitcher Ian Heisel posted a career-high eight wins in 2004 to help lead Cal U to its first PSAC Tournament Championship in 25 years. Heisel finished his career among the all-time leaders in ERA, saves and appearances before signing a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has also coached three-time All-PSAC West selection Chris Doerschner, who finished his

career as the school’s all-time leader in innings pitched and ranks among the leaders in wins and strikeouts. Brunson was a two-year player for the Vulcans and received captain status his senior season. As a junior in 1999, he led the pitching staff in both ERA and innings pitched before posting five wins as a senior. A native of Greensburg, Pa., Brunson earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from Cal U in 2000. He later completed his master’s degree in 2002, majoring in geography and regional planning. He currently resides in Mt. Pleasant, Pa., with his wife Heather and their three daughters, Haylie, Krista and Kendra.

ASSISTANT COACHES

A graduate of rival Slippery Rock University, Chris Squeglia enters his second season on the coaching staff with the California University of Pennsylvania baseball program. Squeglia was a two-year player for The Rock after playing two seasons at Allegheny College, a Division III program in Meadville, Pa. In two seasons with The Rock, he posted a 7-10 record in 20 appearances (17 starts) with a 4.94 career ERA in 100.2 innings. During the 2008 season, Squeglia was an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic (PSAC) West Second-Team selection after leading the team in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts and complete games. Squeglia, who missed the 2006 campaign due to Tommy John surgery, started his college career at Allegheny and compiled 10 wins in two years with the Gators. As a freshman in 2004, he earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Honorable Mention. In his first year on the college mound, Squeglia threw four complete games and had a 5-1 record with a 4.67 ERA. While at Shaler High School, he earned all-section laurels and

was twice named Team Most Valuable Pitcher. As a senior, he helped lead the Titans to a runner-up finish in the WPIAL and received Post-Gazette North all-star honors. He completed his undergraduate degree in Finance from Slippery Rock in 2008 and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Sport Management at Cal U. Squeglia’s younger brother, Jon (2006-09), was a four-year pitcher for the Vulcans and ranks third in school history in wins.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to

provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
