Cal U used a high-scoring offense last year en route to posting a 33-10 record and earning a fourth-consecutive PSAC West title. The Vulcans also made their 21st all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2012. However, the Vulcans will feature a new look this season with the graduation of three-time PSAC West Athlete of the Year Jillian Russell, who ranks as the program’s all-time leader in home runs. Led by 20th-year head coach Rick Bertagnolli, Cal U still returns five position players and reigning PSAC West Pitcher of the Year Hope Spancake. Junior Natalie Wideman returns as the team’s leadoff hitter and will move back to catcher. She received All-PSAC West First-Team laurels as a catcher in 2011 before earning similar honors last year at second base. Wideman finished among the league leaders with a .416 average, .503 on-base percentage and 42 runs scored while starting every game last season. Wideman was also named an Academic All-American in 2012 and played on the Canadian Senior National Team over the summer. Junior Stephani Ellis and sophomore Shelby Heyd return to anchor the outfield and the middle of the lineup. Ellis posted a breakout season in 2012, earning NFCA all-region laurels after improving her batting average by over 100 points. She finished with a .339 average and ranked second on the team with a .434 on-base percentage while hitting cleanup. A native of British Columbia, Ellis has started at all three positions in the outfield during her career and may see additional time at first base this year. Heyd received All-PSAC West First-Team status after a standout freshman campaign. She finished third on the team with a .341 average and totaled 27 RBI, which is the most among returning players. Playing primarily right field last year, Heyd figures to move to center field in 2013. Freshmen Alex Sagl and Erica Vallecorsa will both start in the outfield corners this season. Vallecorsa was a MVP and three-time all-conference selection while playing scholastically in New York. Sagl was a two-sport standout in Ontario and will also be a key pitcher for the Vulcans in 2013.

With Wideman moving back behind the plate, junior Shelby Lia will transition to second base. Lia finished with six homers and 23 RBI last season while starting exclusively at first base. After struggling early in the season, she rebounded to post a .368 average, 13 RBI and 14 runs scored during divisional play. As a freshman in 2011, Lia primarily played second base and was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year Sophomore Breanna Morris returns at shortstop after starting every game last season. She finished with 28 runs scored and was among the league leaders with 107 assists. A standout at Waynesburg Central, Morris looks to improve upon her .263 average and 11 RBI. Cal U will feature a pair of newcomers at the corner infield positions this season. Freshman Lindsay Reicoff will start at first base and bat in the middle of the lineup, while classmate Natalya Smarra will play third base. Both newcomers were all-section players while starring in the WPIAL. Freshman Tiffany Koenig and Deanna Laughlin give added depth to the infield, while juniors Jordyn Reagan and Carly Senko provide speed off the bench. Reagan and Senko are both members of the Cal U track & field team and Reagan captured a pair of league titles on relay teams last spring. Spancake returns as the only pitcher on the team with collegiate experience. A two-time All-PSAC West First-Team selection, Spancake ranked among the league leaders and set career highs last year with 17 victories, 1.67 ERA, 167.2 innings and 141 strikeouts. Reicoff, Sagl and freshman Haley Bashada figure to battle for starts during the early portion of the season, as pitching roles are determined. Reicoff finished her career with the strikeout record at Chartiers Valley and Bashada was a member of section championship teams at nearby Belle Vernon. With a solid nucleus of returning players and a talented freshman class, the Vulcans will once again be challenging for the conference title while continuing their success at the national level.

Entering his 20th season at Cal U, Rick Bertagnolli has guided the program into a perennial national contender and placed himself among the elite softball coaches in the country. Over the winter, he was rewarded for his accomplishments by being selected into the NFCA Hall of Fame with induction scheduled for later this year. The Vulcans have reached the NCAA Tournament 17 times with back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 1997 and 1998. Currently in his 29th season as a head coach, Bertagnolli has a career collegiate coaching record of 929-271 (.774) and holds an overall mark of 667-221 (.751) with the Vulcans. He enters the year ranked fourth among active coaches in NCAA Division II in winning percentage and is the winningest coach in all of Cal U sports history. Bertagnolli’s Vulcan teams have appeared in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Game 12 times and set a NCAA record with 88-consecutive conference wins from 1994-99. Numerous Vulcan players have garnered national, regional and conference recognition under Bertagnolli’s direction. He has coached 29 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Americans, 75 NFCA all-region honorees and over 100 all-conference players. In 1998, Bertagnolli helped tutor two-time All-American Danielle

Penner, who was named the National Player of the Year by the NFCA. He has also coached four players who played on the Canadian Senior National Team: Meaggan Wilton (2000 Sydney Olympics), Megan Timpf (2008 Beijing Olympics, 2012 ISF World Championships), Jillian Russell (2010 ISF World Championships, 2011 Pan American Games) and Natalie Wideman (2012 ISF World Championships). The Cal U softball success under Bertagnolli has also been evident in the classroom, as he has mentored nine Academic All-Americans, including two last year. Bertagnolli’s career at Cal U began in 1994 and in his first season the Vulcans recorded a 38-13 record, advanced to the PSAC Championship Game and captured the regional championship. After a combined 93 wins the next two seasons, the stage was set for a historic 1997 season. With Penner dominating opponents in the circle, the Vulcans rolled to a program-best 53-5 record to capture the first national championship in any sport in school history. In 1998, Cal U became only the fourth (and last) school in NCAA Division II softball history to win back-to-back National Championships. The Vulcans registered a 47-7 overall record behind the play of five different All-Americans, including Penner, who

was named NFCA Player of the Year after finishing her career with an NCAA record 141 career victories. Bertagnolli and his staff were named NFCA Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year. Since the two National Championships, Cal U has maintained a tradition of excellence by qualifying for the NCAA Tournament 12 times in 14 seasons. The Vulcans also won 15 PSAC West Championships (1994-2004, 2009-12) and qualified for 19-consecutive PSAC Tournaments (1994-2012) under Bertagnolli. Bertagnolli earned his 600th victory at Cal U while leading the team to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2010, and registered his 900th career win as a college coach last year. Bertagnolli started his college coaching career at Wabash Valley Junior College for three seasons before serving as head coach at South Carolina-Spartanburg for two seasons. Bertagnolli and his wife Jodi have two daughters Ava and Mia.

Stephani Moore begins her sixth season as an assistant coach on the Cal U coaching staff after a five-year stint as head coach at Washington & Jefferson, a Division III program in nearby Washington, Pa. Moore is responsible for working with Cal U pitchers and outfielders. While at W&J, Moore elevated the Presidents from a last-place team in the conference to a league title in just four seasons. After a combined 19 wins in her first two seasons, she guided W&J to a 21-win season in 2005. The following season, the Presidents claimed the conference crown with a 25-15 mark, including an appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. She finished her W&J tenure in 2007 following a 19-15 season and another appearance in the ECAC Championship.

Prior to her stint with the Presidents, Moore began her coaching career as an assistant at West Virginia Wesleyan. While with the Bobcats, she worked with the pitchers and outfielders and West Virginia Wesleyan made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. A 2000 graduate of Robert Morris, Moore was a standout as a pitcher and outfielder on the diamond for the Division I Colonials. She finished her collegiate career among the all-time school leaders with a .315 batting average, 39 wins, 2.92 earned run average, 510.1 innings pitched and 59 complete games. She completed her undergraduate degree from RMU in long-term health care management before earning her master’s degree from West Virginia Wesleyan in business administration.

Moore and her husband Chad reside in Canonsburg, Pa., with their children, Colin and Brianne.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

2013 CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA SOFTBALL GUIDE

Originally tabbed “women’s baseball,” the sport of softball has held a strong presence on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania. Dating back as early as 1934, records show that many young women participated in softball at the intramural level. However as time passed by, it was not until the mid-1960’s when softball began to make a name for itself on campus. From the mid-1960’s throughout the early 1970’s, participation in the softball intramural program saw a steady increase of women and the sport itself was garnering attention throughout the country. Very few small colleges or universities can boast that one of their athletic programs have won two national championships and produced two Olympians. However, the softball program at Cal U is able to do just that. Longtime head coach Rick Bertagnolli took over a solid program in 1994 and has turned it into one of the nation’s elite. During his 19-year tenure, Bertagnolli has produced 75 NFCA All-Region athletes, almost 30 NFCA All-Americans and two Olympians. The combination of these talented student-athletes, along with the hard work and dedication of everyone involved with the program has resulted in five conference titles, five regional titles and two NCAA Division II National Championships in 1997 and 1998, while also earning National Coach of the Year honors both seasons. Since the 1994 season, numerous Vulcan greats have graced Lilley Field. Two of the all-time greats are Danielle Penner, a three-time All American and National Player of the Year in 1998, and Lith Webb, a four-time All American who still holds school records for batting average, hits, doubles, runs scored, total bases and sacrifices. In addition to these two Vulcan greats, there were 23 other NFCA All-Americans at Cal U from 1994-2004. During this time period the Vulcans tallied an astonishing 194-16 PSAC West record. Other All-Americans and game-changing performers in this time period include: three-time All-American Jen Wagner, Kimmie Miller who led the NCAA in batting average in 2004, Meaggan Wilton a two-time All-American, Kristin Heslop, along with Tara Douglas and Daysha Grimes who garnered first

team All-America honors in 1998 and 2002. Prior to the Bertagnolli era at Cal U, the Vulcan program experienced a great deal of success under leadership from then-head coach Linda Kalafatis. Kalafatis, a former all-region performer for the Vulcans, took over the program in 1989. In her five seasons from 1989-93, Kalafatis tallied a 175-53 overall record. During her coaching career at Cal U she led the Vulcans to five-straight PSAC West championships, made the NCAA Tournament on three occasions and captured one PSAC crown. During her time as head coach, Kalafatis also had the opportunity to coach some great student-athletes who earned second team All-American honors. These three student-athletes include Stacy Eppinger who is tied for the most doubles at Cal U with 50, Lori Burkholder the all-time school leader in stolen bases with 73 and Lauren Mitchell who is

still in the top five in both total hits and triples. In addition to these three All-Americans, she had seven other all-region honorees suit up in a Vulcan uniform. Not only have these young women had great careers on the field here at Cal U, but many of these Vulcan greats have also gone on to coach in the collegiate ranks. Becky Mezyk, Penner, Maggie Fricko, Wilton, Christy Cameron, and Sue Kunkle are a few former Vulcans who went into the coaching ranks. Numerous others have also coached at the high school and club levels as well.

In addition to these Vulcans

continuing their softball careers outside of Cal U by entering the coaching ranks, two former Vulcans made the ultimate dream in any sport a reality by competing for their country at the international level by being selected for their country’s Olympic team. Wilton participated in the 2000 games held in Sydney and Megan Timpf played in the 2008 Beijing games. Both of these former Cal U standouts played for Team Canada. In 2012, Jillian Russell broke the all-time school record for homers and became the first three-time PSAC West Player of the Year in school history. She also earned NFCA All-America honors for the second-straight year after become the first All-American since 2004. Bertagnolli earned PSAC West Coach of the Year honors for the fourth-straight year and 12th time in his career. As time goes on, the softball program at California will continue to produce q u a l i t y s t u d e n t -athletes both on and off the field. As the 2013 season is upon us, we wish the Vulcans the best of luck in their goal of capturing a n o t h e r c o n f e r e n c e championship and success on the national level.

HISTORY

The Vulcans captured the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1997 and 1998,compiling an overall record of 100-12 (.893) in those seasons.

Danielle Penner finished her career as the all-time wins leader inNCAA Division II history with 141 victories.

The softball program won the first National Championship

in school history in 1997.
