• To count all people in Australia on Census night, and the dwellings in which they reside.

• To provide timely high quality and relevant data for small geographic areas and small population groups.

Australian Statistical Geography Standard

(ASGS)• more stability for time series data from 2011

Census onwards• based on functional areas• new base unit of output is Statistical Area

Level 1 (SA1)• Collection Districts (CDs) will not be available• Local Government Area (LGA) and Statistical

Local Area (SLA) data will be available for 2011

Some key points Once implemented, the ASGS will provide

more stability for time series data from 2011 Census onwards

SLAs are not part of the ASGS ABS will provide data at the SLA level for the

2011 Census only LGAs are still a part of the ASGS and will

continue to be provided SA1s are the new base unit of output for the

2011 Census CDs are not included in the new geography
