2 Charleston Southern University

The 2011 Lady Buccaneer volleyball team comes into this season with a sense of new beginnings and excitement. The Lady Bucs will turn to experienced players for leadership and some newcomers to continue the momentum of last year’s team which made it to the semifi-nals of the Big South Conference Tournament.

Head Coach Danyel Bellush is entering her 15th season as head coach and said that she is ready for the growing pains her young team might face, “For the most part everybody is really young, but sometimes those are my favorite kind of teams…I’m excited about it.”

Last season saw the Lady Bucs sweep UNC-Asheville in the first round of the Big South Tournament. The Bucs went on to lose a close match against eventual conference tournament champions High Point in the semifinals. CSU finished with a 6-10 conference record.

ScheduleThe Lady Bucs open the season with a challenging tournament at Duke University Aug. 26 and 27, facing the host Blue Devils, Wisconsin and Furman.

Following the Duke tournament CSU welcomes Wofford to the CSU Field House Aug 30. where the Lady Bucs went 5-7 last season. After competing in back to back tournaments at Wake Forest and UNC-Wilmington, CSU heads down the road to face city rival The Citadel Sep. 13.The team will then head to Spartanburg to compete in the USC Upstate Invitational Sep. 16-17.

The team will hit the road for a three game stretch against city rivals the Col-lege of Charleston Sep. 20 as well as conference foes Winthrop Sep. 23 and Pres-byterian College Sep. 24.

The road trip is followed by the conference home-open-ing weekend where CSU will host High Point Sep. 30, followed by Campbell Oct. 1.

The Lady Bucs will travel to face Coastal Carolina Oct. 7, Radford Oct. 14, and Liberty

Oct. 15 before embarking on a stretch of five home games.

CSU will finish up the season on the road at High Point Nov. 12 before competing in the Big South Volleyball Championship on Nov. 17.

The Big South added Campbell University to the league which will bring new challenges to the Lady Bucs, but Coach Bellush said her team

will be prepared, “The conference will be very competitive this sea-son…We added a new team and a few new coaches….This will give us new dynamics and with that comes new challenges, but we’ll be ready.”

SettersThe leadership for this season comes from an experienced group of setters. According to Coach Bellush each player brings a unique type of leadership to the team, “They each bring something different, they complement each other well,” she said.

Red-Shirt senior Amy Nokes returns to the squad following a 2010 season which was her best as a Lady Buccaneer. Nokes was selected to the NCCU and Best Western Invitational All-Tournament teams. Nokes was first on the team in assists (1042), assists per set (8.61), total attacks (2426), and set percentage (.430). Being the only senior on the team, Coach Bellush will turn to Nokes to help lead this young group of play-ers through her experience, “Amy is our overall leader; she has been through a ton with coming back from that injury and everything; she is tough.”

Junior Michaela Luna appeared in 31 sets last season, posting 53 assists, 36 digs, six kills, two aces, and a block. Luna is the “fitness” leader of the team, according to Coach Bellush, “she leads through hard work, and players can come to her with questions because they trust her.”

Sophomore Laura Grace Swindler appeared in 34 sets as a freshman and was second on the team in assists (83) and assists per set (2.44). Swin-dler rounds out the Buccaneers leadership trio as Coach Bellush referred to her as the team’s spiritual leader.

Joining the group is freshman Kirsten Struksnes who helped Queen Elisabeth High School to a pair of City Championships. She earned a silver medal at the 2010 Canadian National Team Cup Challenge.

Outside HittersThe Lady Bucs will turn to six underclassmen to fill the void left by 2010 Big South Player of the Year Amanda Hill. Although replacing such a major talent will be difficult, Coach Bellush says it will open up new opportunities for her team, “we’re a different team now, a more balanced team, and teams that would just scout Amanda in the past will have to scout the whole team now.”

Seeing the most time last season, sophomore Kayla Klinger was one of five Buccaneers to appear in all 33 of the teams contests, seeing action in 117 sets. She was second on the team with 24 service aces and ranked third in kills (213) and digs (236).

Sophomore Ashley Johnston appeared in four sets last year, collecting six kills and three digs in an injury-shortened season.

Carley Reiter saw limited time as a freshman last season, appearing in three sets. Her role looks to be expanded this year.

Serving as a backup outside hitter last year, sophomore Andrea Keesee appeared in 24 sets and totaled seven kills, eight digs and three assists.

Coach Bellush has added two freshmen outside hitters to the roster. Morgan Hadden joins the lady Bucs from William Aberhart H.S. in Cal-gary, Alberta, Canada. Teaming up with fellow Buc Kirsten Struksnes, she won a silver medal at the National Team Challenge U18 Tourna-ment.

Hailing from Charlotte, N.C, 2009 NCSAA All-American Jasmine Nie-man brings versatility to the team with playing experience on both the outside and back row.

Middle BlockersCSU is looking to retool the middle blocker position after the graduation of record setting blocker Cori Helman.

Incoming junior Wynter Davis comes to the Bucs after playing two years at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. Although she is new to the team she will be looked at to provide leader-ship and experience, “I’m expecting a lot out of Wynter right away since she has two years under her belt,” said Coach Bellush.Sophomore Erin Levenice competed in 55 sets and made five starts. She was second on the team with 0.64 blocks per set.

Freshman Sydney Tracy comes to CSU from Woodmont H.S. in Pied-mont, S.C. She was named the 2010 Region 1 Player of the Year and was selected to the All-State team for two consecutive seasons. With the graduation of Helman, Tracy is expected to perform at a high level and Coach Bellush is excited about her potential, “she is a freshman to keep your eye on, I have watched her over the past few years and I am really excited to see what she can do.”

LiberoSophomore Maggie Murphy served as a back-up libero last season, but will compete for the starting job this year. As a freshman, she competed in 84 sets and made two starts.

Hailing from Maryland, Freshman Ashley Higginbothem brings experi-ence at numerous positions to the Bucs. While at Middletown HS. she received First-Team honors at the city and league levels.

With a strong core of leaders, bolstered by some fresh faces, good things seem to be in store for the Lady Buccaneers.Coach Bellush said, “It’s a year of fresh starts; the possibilities are really exciting.”

team in digs (242) and digs per game (2.521) while recording 137 kills and 17 aces. Her junior year was shortened with a severe knee injury 12 matches into the season that required surgery on her anterior cruci-ate ligament and cost her the rest of her junior year.As a sophomore she played in 104 of 106 possible

games and finished fourth in kills per game (1.337) and digs per game (2.510). She played in 28 of 33 matches as a freshman. Bellush was an all-state se-lection and team most valuable player at Osbourn Park High School. She coaches for the USVBA, serving as coach

Charleston is America’s most beautifully preserved architectural and historic treasure, with a rich, 300-year history just waiting to be discovered. Hundreds of significant and lovingly preserved structures from the colonial and antebellum periods grace the historic district’s narrow streets. Church bells toll the hour as history unfolds

around each and every corner. In no other place are the past and present more intertwined. The entire Charleston area is a never-ending feast for the senses, with history serving as the main course. Visit Charles Towne Landing, the site where the original settlement was established in 1670. Explore the Charleston Museum, our nation’s first museum, or Patriot’s Point, the world’s largest naval and maritime museum and home of World War II’s Fighting Lady, the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown. Drive to Fort Moultrie, scene of the first decisive American victory of the American Revolution, and a mainstay of shore defense until 1947. Take a scenic boat tour to Fort Sumter, the manmade island fortress where the Civil War began. World-famous plantations and gardens offer visitors a fas-cinating glimpse into life during the antebellum era.

Informative tours of the Charleston area are offered daily and are a must for all who want to truly appreciate this living museum. The area’s lush sea islands and sun-drenched beaches offer as much recreation or relaxation as your heart desires. Golf is on a world-class level, with challenging courses reflecting the natural beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Charter fishing on the Gulf stream or inshore waters is readily available. Shopping is one of our vistors’ most passionate pursuits. Marvel at native sweet-grass baskets and handmade crafts found in Charleston’s famous open-air market, or browse through inviting boutiques, art galleries and antique shops found throughout the Charleston area. When it comes to dining, your biggest decision may be just what to try next. Every meal is a celebration of tastes, with a variety that ranges from traditional oyster roasts to fine continental dining. If festivals strike your fancy, you have come to the right place. You will be dazzled by a diverse array of special events. At any time of year, you will always find more to see, do and experience than you ever imagined ... in a place where warm welcomes have been a treasured tradition for over 300 years.
