VOLLEYBALL 101EQUIPMENTThe net height is 7’ 4 1/8” for women. The ball circumference is 25.5” to 27” and the weight is 9 to 10 ounces. The indoor court is 18 m x 9m.

RULES

Volleyball matches are made up of games played best three out of five to 30. The deciding game or game 5, if necessary, is only played to 15.

Teams will switch sides when both teams have a total score of 8 points combined. The rally scoring system allows a point to be scored on any ball that hits the ground, regardless of which team is serving. Scores can occur from kills or errors.

• Each team can have six players on the floor at a time.

• Teams must stay in the same positions that they started the game in.

• Each team can have 12 substitutions per game. After that, no more subs may enter the game.

• A player entering for another must continue to go in and out for that player for the duration of the game, unless they are the libero.

• Each side is allowed three touches on the ball. The ball must go back over the net on the third hit, usually pass, set, attack. To hit the ball more that three times on a side is illegal, and the opposing team is awarded the point.

• There cannot be double contact on the ball. The ball must hit clean and be passed clean. A double hit is also illegal, and the opposing team is awarded the point. The official signals a double hit by holding up two fingers.

POSITIONS: Middle Blocker: reads the opponent’s setter and blocks the ball Outside Hitter: an all-around player: hitting and blocking Libero: strickly a defensive player, a great passer and an even better digger, wears different color jersye than teammates. Setter: an offensive player decides who gets the ball and when Opposite: responsible for blocking the opponent’s outside hitter

REDLANDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Kristin Vincent begins her twelfth year as Redlands Community College’s Head Volleyball Coach. Vincent is Redlands first and only Volleyball Coach, having started the program in 1997. RCC won the NJCAA Region II Tournament championship during her first three years at the helm of the upstart program, from 1997-99. Vincent guided the Cougars to back-to-back 30-plus win seasons in 1998 and 1999. It was in 1999 that Vincent would lead her team to the NJCAA National Tournament in Kansas, a first in both school and program history.

The next few years, saw some challenges. In 2000, the Cougars returned only one letter winner and struggled to an 11-18 record. The year 2001 would prove to be same song second verse, posting an almost identical 12-18 mark. 2002 began a comeback with a 24-17 record and a Region II second place finish. In 2004, the Lady Cougars finished the season #20 in the polls, but lost a 5th game heartbreaker 14-16 to Seminole State to finish 3rd. in the Region Tournament

The 2005 season marked another rebuilding year that was the precursor to three strong seasons in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The Lady Cougars had winning seasons all three years, but found the same result at the end: losing the regional finals to UAFS. In 2008, UAFS ended up finishing their season as National Runner-Up. But despite the loss at the end of 2008, the Lady Cougars made school history, becoming the first recruiting class to spend every week of their careers ranked in the national polls.

Vincent holds several records at the University of Central Oklahoma where she was a 4-year starter during her college playing years. Her records at UCO include the highest single season hitting average (.377), most career solo blocks (177) and the most assisted blocks (515) ever at the UCO. In addition, she ranks among the top in assisted blocks during a season in the Lone Star Conference, posting 164 as a sophomore. In 2008, Vincent was inducted into UCO’s Athletic Hall of Fame. She is currently the NJCAA Women’s Region 2 Director. Every summer, Vincent conducts various volleyball camps.

Her coaching career is highlighted by having coached 3 All-Americans, 15 All-Region players and 18 Academic All-Americans. 38 of her players have gone on to play at 4-year colleges across the nation. Prior to starting the program at Redlands, Vincent was an Assistant Coach at Edmond Memorial High School. Vincent played high school volleyball at perennial power Martin High School in Arlington, Texas.

Matt Newgent begins his seventh season as head coach for the Cougar baseball team and also serves as Athletic Director. Under Newgent’s guidance the Cougar’s have been ranked each of the last four seasons, and as high as a #2 national ranking in 2008. Since Coach Newgent’s arrival six years ago, the program has again regained its prominence nationally. Newgent and his staff spent the 2009 off-season continuing a renovation of the Cougar baseball facility, while continuing to recruit quality student-athletes to ensure continued success for the program.

Newgent began his collegiate athletic career at Redlands Community College as a catcher under former coach Don Brown. During that season the Cougars went to the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they finished fourth. After leaving RCC, Newgent completed his collegiate playing experience at University of Indianapolis. His collegiate accolades include all tournament catcher honors at the NJCAA World Series, two-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Conference Team and Academic All-Conference Team, NCAA North Central Region Team, and Most Valuable Player during his senior season at University of Indianapolis.

Prior to coaching at RCC, Newgent served as Assistant Baseball Coach at Olney Central Community College in Olney, Illinois, where they finished with a record of 40-20 and a trip to the Region 24 Tournament. He was also the Assistant Baseball Coach at University of Indianapolis for three seasons and helped guide the team to a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series in 2000, and a school best 51-15 record in 2001.

Newgent is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association. He earned his Associate of Arts from Redlands Community College in 1997, his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1999, and his Master of Business Administration in 2002 from the University of Indianapolis. Coach Newgent, a native of Piedmont, now resides in Yukon with his wife Christa and their son, Ian.

Second year Redlands Community College Head Athletic Trainer, Eli Zucksworth, is responsible for preparing the athletes for both practice and games, while treating on-site injuries.

Eli Zucksworth is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association. He is a 2005 graduate of Oklahoma State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training. In 2007, he received his Master of Education degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

SEASON PREVIEW

After completing possibly one of the most successful seasons in program his-tory, the 2009 Cougar Volleyball Team is looking forward to continuing the success of last year’s group.

From last year’s squad, who finished the season 26-8 and spent every week ranked in the top 20, there are 3 players returning: Middle Blocker, Felicia Ezenwa from El Paso, TX; Outside Hitter, Lindsay Hughes from OKC and Libero, Shayna Severance from Prineville, OR.

We will be looking for our freshmen to step in and make an immediate im-pact on the court. To find the caliber athlete we were needing to continue the success that has become synonymous with Redlands Volleyball, the coach-ing staff went south of the border to Texas. From Denton: Outside Hitter, Kimmy Seiler and Setter Brook Walford. From El Paso: Outside Hitter, Adriana Rodriguez; Right Side Hitter, Abby Savage and Defensive Specialist, Krystal Martinez. From Bridgeport, Middle Hitter Janie Foreman; from Weatherford, Malayna Alleman; and from Pampa, Outside Hitter, Jessica Miner. Rounding out this year’s freshmen class are Outside Hitter, Liz Marquez from Juarez, Mexico and Middle Hitter, Melissa Sandoval from Santiago, Columbia.

We will once again have a tough travel schedule to go along with our region play, which generally touts at least one team ranked in the top 20. We will be attending one of the top tournaments in the nation in Houston at the Texas Tornados training facility, one at North Central Texas and one in Tyler, TX.

The coaching and administrative staff at Redlands would like to thank you in advance for your support of Cougar Athletics and our athletes. We are looking forward to another excellent year on the volleyball court!

Go Cougars!

The story of the Redlands Cougar is shrouded in mystery. The Cougar first appeared as the official Redlands mascot post-1970. Prior to that Redland’s (originally called El Reno Junior College) mascot was the Chieftain, which was chosen to correspond with El Reno High School’s mascot the Indian. Now, this elusive nameless cat can occasionally be spotted around campus. Be On The Lookout!
