for Health Equity

2011 GlobeMed HillTop Global Health ConferenceNovember 11-13, 2011 • Columbia University • New York, NY

Page 2: 2011 GlobeMed HillTop Program

Welcome to the 2011 GlobeMed HillTop at Columbia University!

Over the past two years, GlobeMed has grown from 17 university chapters to 46, with more than 1,500 student members working with 47 grassroots health organizations on four continents. Partnership has always been a pillar of GlobeMed’s operational model and value system, but in light of GlobeMed’s recent expansion, the question of how exactly to foster intimate and productive partnerships becomes even more significant.

This HillTop aims to answer the question, “How do we improve our partnerships?” We will first unpack the value system framing partnership and examine the implications of those values at all levels of the movement for global health equity. Then, we will explore the many different manifestations of partnership and consider the potential opportunities for GlobeMed students. Lastly, we will think critically and creatively about how our network can best use partnership to build a broad-based social movement for global health equity.

We hope to translate our thinking into concrete improvements.

It has been our honor and our privilege to organize this conference, “From Philosophy to Practice: Partnership as Paradigm for Health Equity.” We hope this weekend will be rich with the challenging reflections, mind-opening conversations, and inspiring ideas that characterize GlobeMed’s unique synergy of community, network, and social movement.

This HillTop would not be possible without the kindness of many. We are deeply indebted to our chapter for their continuous support, and the University community that has rallied around our efforts to bring HillTop to Columbia. We owe the National Office a thousand thanks for their mentorship, and we especially would like to thank the Summit Team and last year’s HillTop Team from UNC-Chapel Hill for their expertise. A special thank you to all the GlobeMed alumni and speakers who have offered to share their time and experience with us. We are also indebted to you, the GlobeMed student whose passion and dedication make our network a constant source of inspiration and affirmation. Your contributions will define HillTop’s success.

Dear friends,

With love and admiration,

2011 GlobeMed HillTop Team Karina, Lillian, Conner, Diane, Katie, Katelyn, and Lianne
