globemed at ucla: donor update

Hello family and friends! This past year, GlobeMed at UCLA reached above and beyond our fundraising goal of $6,000 dollars! The money that we raised helped fund and support projects run by our partner, the Nwoya Youth Center in northern Uganda. With so much gratitude and appreciation, we’d like to update you on what GlobeMed at UCLA and the Nwoya Youth Center partnership has done over the last year. This summer, four GlobeMed interns went on a GrassRoots Onsite Work (GROW) trip to work with our partner in Anaka, Uganda. There, they worked with Straight Talk Foundation and the Nwoya Youth Center to help develop and support six programs focused on adolescent sexual reproductive health (ASRH). These programs included: 1) ASRH outreaches to schools, 2) outreaches to persons with disabilities and young positives, 3) condom awareness sessions, 4) boys and girls counseling, 5) sanitary pad education, demonstration, and distribution, 6) sports and games. Specically, GlobeMed at UCLA purchased materials that would help the Nwoya Youth Center facilitate their visions of a healthier community. We bought over 1,700 disposable pads, 9 months’ worth of reusable pads, 2,500 condoms, an assortment of stationary items, board games, sports equipment, and fuel for transportation to schools deep in the village. We believe that these materials will help prevent early pregnancy, decrease dropout rates for girls in schools, and provide accessible services for vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, young mothers, and young HIV positives, and empower adolescents in the Nwoya District to realize and maintain safe and healthy lives through informed decision making. Overall, these programs project to impact the lives of over 5,000 people. Through meeting and interacting with the center’s staand the programs’ beneciaries, our interns realized the sincere curiosity of the youth in the community and the incredible importance of the resources that the youth center oers. For many of the schools and community groups, there are no other sources of information on sexual reproductive health besides the Nwoya Youth Center. Without the center and its counselors, information about HIV transmission, condom use, sanitary pad hygiene, and mothering practices among other topics would be much less accessible and reliable. The team left Anaka having made such warm and welcoming friends, but also knowing that the work that the partnership does has an irreplaceable and deeply meaningful impact on the community. On behalf of GlobeMed at UCLA and the Nwoya Youth Center, we would like to express our most sincere thanks for your continuous support and most generous donations. We look forward to updating you on the progress of our programs and projects to come.

Specifically, GlobeMed at UCLA purchased materials that would help the Nwoya Youth Center facilitate their visions of a healthier community. Through meeting and interacting with the center’s staff and the programs’ beneficiaries, our interns realized the sincere curiosity of the youth in the community and the incredible importance of the resources that the youth center offers.
