academic successSuccess in the classroom is essential for a Marian University

student-athlete. Our coaches do not just coach their teams on the playing surface, but also teach their athletes knowledge in the mind, body, spirit tradition.

Over 400 student-athletes passed through the gymnasium in the Physical Education Center; the playing surfaces at Marian University’s baseball, softball, and soccer fields as well as St.Vincent Health Field; and the competition track and cross country courses in Indiana in 2010-11. Nineteen of these athletes were honored by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics as NAIA Scholar-Athletes for their performances in the classroom. In the past four seasons, 94 Knights have picked up the honor and continue to perform both on the field and in the classroom. Marian University has had more than 180 student-athletes honored for their academic prowess since 1982.

The NAIA Scholar-Athlete award is given to an individual who has attained junior standing and carries at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average.

Knights athletics also had 39 of its programs honored by the NAIA as Scholar Teams in the past five seasons. The number of programs is the second-most in school history and includes six women’s programs. Men’s and women’s tennis and women’s cross country are three-time Scholar Teams while softball, women’s golf, women’s soccer, men’s cross country, and women’s basketball each became two-time recipients of the award. The Scholar Team accolade is given to a program that has maintained a 3.00 cumulative grade point average as a team during the entire academic year.

Congratulations to those athletic teams and individuals who strive to promote the mission of Marian University athletics both on the field and in the classroom.

The Knights have proven that Marian University is teaching the whole person: mind, body, and spirit; through their performance in the classroom and on the fields of play.

athletic successSince joining the Mid-Central College Conference in 1988-89,

Marian University has enjoyed success in numerous sports at varying stages of competition. The Knights have won 39 con-ference titles including 11 in men’s golf, eight in baseball, four in men’s tennis, and three in men’s basketball and softball. All three of the MCC Champion basketball teams have advanced to the NAIA national tournament including an Elite Eight run in 2000-01 and a Sweet Sixteen run in 2003-04. The women’s basketball team earned its first-ever berth in the NAIA national tournament and won its first-ever tournament game in 2010-11.

Twenty-five Knights have been named NAIA All-American and over 300 Knights have been named to the All-Conference first team since 1988-89. Fifteen of them were honored as the MCC’s best player. In 2010-11, Marian University had 19 student-athletes named first team All-Conference in their respective sports.

In just their fourth season of competition, the Knights football program earned its first-ever 10-win season and its first-ever berth in the NAIA Football Championship Series. The Knights de-feated Ottawa University (KS) by a 35-20 score to earn its first-ever playoff victory to earn a spot in the NAIA FCS Quarterfinals.

Marian University cycling earned its 14th and 15th collegiate cycling national championships in 2010-11. The Knights won the track title at Major Taylor Velodrome, their fifth straight, before suc-cessfully defending their road championship from 2009-10 in Madi-son, Wisconsin. The program finished as the second-best collegiate cycling team in the nation. The tradition will continue in 2011-12 as the Knights look to expand their dominance into the mountain bike and cyclo-cross disciplines.

The Marian University department of athletics also earned a run-ner-up finish in the Mid-Central College Conference Commission-er’s Cup for the second straight season.

A strong recruiting season puts the Knights in a place to contend for conference championships in 2011-12.

history of marian university athletics

Originally a teacher training school formed in 1851 by the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, St. Francis Normal School became a four-year state-approved institution in 1936. During that year, it merged with Immaculate Conception Junior College to form Marian College. In late 1936, the Sisters of St. Francis purchased the former James Allison estate, “Riverdale,” as a site for Marian College. In 1937, the college moved to Indianapolis after securing a state charter and the purchase of the Allison estate, home to the famed Allison Mansion.

While athletics was not established until the institution became co-educational in 1954-55, the Department of Physical Education mandated, in 1940, a one-year sports participation requirement for women to graduate. By 1943, sports clubs began to form, offering a variety of choices for women. Swimming, ice skating, horseback riding, archery, and tennis were mainstays and led to the Marian College Student Athletic Association and its annual “play day.” In 1948, the college began an expansion program that included the building of Clare Hall, the original gymnasium, and Marian Hall. In 1954, the school became the first co-educational Catholic college in Indiana and, with the development of the co-ed institution, varsity athletics were introduced.

Knights athletics was born with the sport of men’s basketball being the first official varsity sport on campus in 1954-55. A member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the Knights opened that first season with a 3-8 overall record. Through the end of the 1950s, Marian College added the sports of baseball (1956), men’s golf (1957), men’s tennis (1958), and men’s cross country (1960). Marian College athletics, under the guidance of the first director of athletics and men’s basketball coach, Walt Fields, flourished with its five sports. Cleon Reynolds assumed control of athletics in 1963 and governed athletics until Ed Schilling took control for five years. Marian College added just one sport in the 1970s, women’s volleyball, and stayed stagnant until 1975-76 when head basketball coach and athletic director John Grimes took

control of the department.Coach Grimes’ 26-year tenure as director of athletics saw the

athletic department expand from five to 17 sports and join the Mid-Central College Conference in Indiana in 1988-89. In addition, Grimes led Knights basketball to three NAIA national tournaments and three MCC championships. Coach Grimes retired from his administrative duties in 2005 after earning the distinction of NAIA Region VIII Athletic Director of the Year. A new era was established due to his diligence as Marian College hired its first full-time director of athletics in 2005-06.

Joe Haklin assumed control over Knights athletics in 2005-06 and has overseen the development of the football program and has provided sound governance over Marian University’s 21 varsity sports since his hiring in October 2005. He has made great contributions during his tenure. He was an essential figure in the development of the Physical Education Center expansion in 2006-07 and the Marian College multi-purpose athletic facility, now St.Vincent Health Field, which includes an artificial football and soccer playing surface, and an eight-lane track as well as the development of the new varsity softball field and tennis courts.

On July 1, 2009, Marian College became Marian University and we are building a great Catholic university. On January 15, 2010, Marian University and the Indiana Osteopathic Association an-nounced that Marian University will develop the first college of osteopathic medicine and house the second school of medicine in the state of Indiana.

The Knights football team earned its first-ever NAIA Football Championship Series berth in 2010-11 and the cycling program won its 14th and 15th collegiate cycling national championships. The addition of the Lake Sullivan Sports Complex to Marian Uni-versity gives Marian University a world-class facility in Major Taylor Velodrome and will allow for continued expansion of the Marian University campus.

Department of athletics administration

Stephen Downing returns to his home state after spending the last 10 years as senior associate director of athletics at Texas Tech University in Lub-bock, Texas. In this role, Downing managed the day-to-day internal operations of Red Raiders athletics and was responsible for a $47 million annual bud-get. He also served as the sport administrator for 11 varsity sports where he managed the day-to-day operations of these programs.

At Marian University, Downing will oversee the operations of 21 varsity sports that compete as members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athlet-ics (NAIA), USA Cycling, the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) as well as the Mid-Central College Conference (MCC) and Mid-States Football Association (MSFA). Over the last five years, Marian University has increased its student-athlete population to more than 400 student-athletes competing at the na-tional level. He will undertake his new role in early September.

Downing made it clear that he sees athletes as students first. “My phi-losophy embraces at the core, the university’s commitment to the complete human development of the young men and women who wear the jerseys of their sport,” Downing said. “This includes developing the life skills that address academic, personal, social, and career components.” Downing also commented that he firmly believes that all students (athletes and non-ath-

letes) are part of the Marian University experience, “Yet even more so, they are part of a larger community of Indianapolis, of Indiana, and of the world.”

Downing was former associate director of athletics at Indiana University Bloomington (IU) for 22 years, where he created the Student-Athlete Assis-tance Program, a prevention program for drug, alcohol, and personality dis-orders. He’s a seasoned administrator, scheduler, and fundraiser who sees himself as a key player in engaging others with the university. “I believe my experiences in the departments of Texas Tech University and Indiana Univer-sity will benefit Marian University,” said Downing. “My experiences in the Big Ten and the Big XII will only enhance the transformational growth Marian University is experiencing.”

As a player, Downing was a three-year letter winner at IU and was a mem-ber of the 1974 world champion Boston Celtics. Under former IU head coach Bob Knight’s tutelage,he was named the Big Ten men’s basketball most valuable player in 1973 after averaging 20.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in leading the Hoosiers to the NCAA Final Four. In 1995, Downing was inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame and, in 2009, was inducted into the Indiana University Athletic Hall of Fame.

marian university Football Facilities

In 2007, Marian University undertook an aggressive expansion of the Physical Education Center, which was originally constructed in 1982. The university added a vast locker room devoted to the new program and committed money to the construction of new state-of-the-art fitness facilities.

The football locker room houses 110 wood lockers with locking cabinets to give each player his own personal space and house his equipment as well as any personal belongings. The space is wide enough for specialist meetings and is the rallying point for the Marian University football program.

Additionally, during this expansion, Marian University added a second fitness facility on the second floor directly above the football locker room. This space is devoted to weight machines as well as 10 treadmills and five elliptical machines used by the department of athletics and the Marian University community. The Adams Fitness Center is the primary fitness facility for the athletics programs and is our free weight facility that is for strength and conditioning. The expansion was completed prior to the 2007 season.

The fitness facilities have normal operating hours and are available for use by the entire Marian University community with the mere showing of an student/faculty/staff/alumni identification card.

2011

Marian University head football coach Ted Karras Jr. coined a phrase after the 2010 season: “From the Swamp to the Mountains.” That is how the first four years of Knights football has been described.

Karras, who is entering his fifth season, guided the Knights to numerous firsts in the program’s short history in 2010. Not only was it the program’s third straight win-

ning season, but the Knights earned their first-ever 10-win season and garnered their first-ever top 10 ranking in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Poll. The culmination of the greatest season in the program’s history came on November 14, 2010 when Marian University was select-ed to play in the NAIA Football Championship Series for the first time in school history.

The firsts did not end there. The Knights, ranked 11th at the time, defeated eighth-ranked Ottawa University by a 35-20 score to earn their first-ever postseason victory. MU fell to eventual national champion Carroll College after a trip to the mountains in Helena, Montana. They closed the 2010-11 academic year as the sixth-ranked team in the nation.

The 2009 season was the program’s second straight winning season as they earned a 6-5 record. The Knights defeated the University of St. Francis (Ill.) on a last-sec-ond field goal to earn their first-ever season-opening win. They also opened a new stadium, St.Vincent Health Field, with a 34-16 win over Grand View, which finished the season ranked in the top 25. The season culminated with the program’s first-ever AFCA-NAIA All-America se-lection in the graduated Chris White.

The second season of Knights football was proof that the program had grown as Karras guided the Knights to their first-ever winning season at 7-4. The team won three straight during the season and earned votes in the NAIA Top 25 for the first time. They also defeated No. 25-ranked McKendree, 28-21, on the road for their first-ever road win and their first-ever win over a ranked op-ponent.

The inaugural season yielded the team’s first-ever victory, a MSFA All-Mideast second team selection, an MSFA All-Academic team selection, and four MSFA All-Mideast honorable mentions. The Knights finished 1-9 in their first-ever season, but that victory was monumen-tal for a startup program.

Karras, alongside assistant coach Martin Mathis, cre-ated a program with just 48 student-athletes and a practice facility that resembled a swamp. Now, the pro-gram’s evolution is complete. Through four years, Coach Karras has amassed a 24-21 record, including a 1-9 first season, and is 23-12 over the last three years, including a 10-3 mark in 2010.

A northwest Indiana native, Karras came to Marian University after three seasons defying the odds at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. While with the Fighting Engineers, Karras led RHIT out of the doldrums of peren-nial two- and three-win seasons. Under his tutelage, the Fighting Engineer program was revitalized with shock-ing victories over DePauw University, Washington Uni-versity, and the program’s first victory at Rhodes College in Memphis since 1971. He posted a pair of .500 (5-5) records in his first season, the first since 1995, and final season at the helm

During his time at RHIT, his players excelled in both football and academics. He had two Academic All-Amer-icans, 13 All-Conference performers, and the first All-American defensive lineman in school history. He also coached the SCAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. While the defensive side saw success, the offense was not to be outdone. He coached RHIT’s first conference rushing champion since 1995 and was cited as having the nation’s “best performance by a rookie coach” by d3football.com in 2003. Karras went 14-16 with RHIT, the best three-year record of any coach, and was named one of the “10 hottest coaches in division III” by Ameri-can Football Monthly.

For four years prior to RHIT, Karras was the offensive

Coach Sherman is in his fourth season coaching at Marian Uni-versity after a season serving as the offensive line coach for one of the most storied high school programs in the state of Indi-ana. And, he is no stranger to NAIA football.

In his three seasons in charge of the offensive line, Sherman has helped bring a more balanced attack on offense with the ability to adapt to personnel. In 2010, his offensive line protected a quar-terback that finished second in passing average and total offense in the MSFA and finished sixth in the NAIA in to-tal offense and total passing. The team was the second-ranked passing offense in the MSFA and ranked sixth in the nation. They were also ranked 16th in passing effi-ciency and allowed just 16 sacks in 446 passing plays.

In addition, his quarterback finished ranked second in the MSFA in passing average and to-tal offense and finished sixth in the nation in total of-fense and total passing. Coming off their second straight winning season, the Knights were looking to expand on the success they achieved in 2008 and 2009. Their season-opening matchup with the University of St. Francis Fighting Saints was the start head coach Ted Karras Jr. wanted. The Knights defeated the Saints by a 37-17 score in front of more than 2,500 fans to earn their second straight season-opening win, and they did it in dominating fashion.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead as senior Clay Coomer hit class-mate Chris Rutherford with a 10-yard strike to cap a 10-play, 49-yard drive and give the Knights a 7-0 lead. Just five USF plays later, sophomore Nathan Toon picked off a Saints pass to put MU inside the USF 30 with 3:25 remaining in the first quarter. Sophomore Nathan Jones punched in a two-yard touchdown run to cap the five-play, 26-yard drive and give the Knights a 13-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Sophomore Stephen Rogers opened the second quarter with his first interception of the season to stake the Knights great field position at the USF 41-yard line. Coomer hit senior JaQuan Patilla with a 41-yard pass to put the Knights up 21-0 with 14:40 to go in the half. Sophomore Zach Sparks con-nected on a 41-yard field goal to send the Knights to halftime with a 24-0 lead.

MU hit a rough spot in the third quarter as the Saints were able to score the next 14 points to cut the lead to 24-14, but Coomer hooked up with Patilla one more time to put MU up 31-14 with 14:04 to go in the game. USF cut it to 31-17 on a 27-yard field goal, but freshman Obed Jean sealed the 37-17 victory with a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Knights are now 2-0 all-time against the University of St. Francis (IL) Fighting Saints.

A raucous crowd of more than 2,500 greeted the Knights, who were looking for revenge on eighth-ranked McKendree University after a crushing road de-feat last season, for the second game of the season. They fully exacted revenge on the Bearcats by scoring the most points in a single game in school history in a 45-12 rout for their first-ever win over a top 10-ranked opponent.

MU hit for four touchdowns in the first quarter to blow the game wide open. The Knights marched down the field on a nine-play, 71-yard drive off the open-ing kickoff. Senior Clay Coomer hit senior JaQuan Patilla with a 31-yard touch-down pass to open the scoring and, on the subsequent McKendree drive, soph-omore Stephen Rogers scooped up a fumble at the Bearcats’ two-yard line to put the Knights in front 14-0 just 5:18 into the game. Coomer and Patilla hooked up a second time on a 41-yard touchdown pass to open a 21-0 lead before junior Reece Green picked off a McKendree pass to set up a Coomer to senior Chris Rutherford 27-yard touchdown pass for the 28-0 first quarter lead.

The Bearcats scored the only points of the second frame on a 41-yard field goal and scored the first points of the third quarter on a 22-yard field goal to cut it to 28-6. However, Coomer hit Rutherford with a five-yard touchdown pass and Patilla hit junior Eric Duncan with a 61-yard touchdown pass to give the Knights a 42-6 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter the Knights held the ball for 6:11 on an 11-play, 61-yard drive that was capped by a 31-yard field goal from sophomore Zach Sparks to give the Knights their most points in school history and a 45-6 lead. McKendree was able to scratch one across for a touchdown with 8:18 to go but it was too late as the Knights earned their first-ever win over a top 10-ranked foe.

MU would hit the road for the first time in 2010 with a 2-0 record and their first top 25 ranking.

After opening the season with two straight victories, the Knights vaulted into the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll for the first time in school history at number 15. They needed their third straight win to maintain their spot in the top 25.

In a game that was marred with a pair of delays equaling nearly three hours, the Knights used 14-second half points to pull away in a 17-7 victory to earn their first-ever 3-0 start to a season.

Sophomore Zach Sparks got the Knights on the board with a 26-yard field goal to cap a 10-play, 33-yard drive that gave MU a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter. However, severe thunderstorms rolled through Des Moines and delayed the game nearly 90 minutes before play resumed. When it did, GVU was driving and was able to score a touchdown with 11:07 to go in the half to take a 7-3 lead. Another 90-minute delay followed before the half could be completed. MU was trailing for the first time in 2010.

A shift in game plan followed a scoreless third quarter and pushed the Knights back on top as sopho-more Clifford Brown scored a five-yard run to give MU a 10-7 lead with 10:05 to go. Sophomore Nathan Jones finished it off with a 13-yard TD run to give MU a 17-7 lead and the defense was able to shut the Vikings down completely to secure the win.

MU was 3-0 for the first time in school history and were focused on a battle of top 15 ranked teams.

The stage was set. Two 3-0 teams ranked in the top 15 in the NAIA and Catholic rivals in the state of Indiana were set to do battle for bragging rights at St.Vincent Health Field. This time, it mattered.

The Knights needed an ever-elusive victory over the perennial power Cou-gars of the University of Saint Francis (IN). They had home field advantage, but a late rally fell short as they were unable to clip the Cougars in a 28-25 defeat to ninth-ranked USF.

MU got off to a slow start as the Cougars marched 77 yards right off the bat to take a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Zach Sparks hit a 37-yard field goal to cut it to 6-3, but a 15-point outburst by USF opened a 21-3 lead with 11:03 to go in the half. Finally, senior Clay Coomer hit classmate JaQuan Patilla with a 75-yard touchdown pass to break some of the USF momentum. However, the Cougars erased doubt with an eight-play, 56-yard drive to take a 28-10 lead into the locker room at the half.

The second half was a chance for the defense to dig in and take the momentum back. They respond-ed. The MU defense shut out USF in the second half and junior Nick Bradford started the comeback with a two-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-18 with one minute left in the third.

Coomer hit Patilla with a 25-yard touchdown pass with 4:11 to go in the fourth quarter to make it a three-point game at 28-25. The defense had put USF in a third-and-nine situation with 3:29 to go, but the Cougars were able to get the first down. A second-and-11 situation went for 21 yards to enable USF to run out the clock and sneak out of St.Vincent Health Field with the 28-25 victory.

It was the closest game played between the two programs in the four years of the rivalry, but it was the first defeat of the season for MU and came to a higher ranked opponent. The Knights were now 3-1 on the year and maintaining their place in the NAIA Top 25.

The Knights suffered a heartbreaking defeat one week before Trinity Inter-national University came to town so a decisive victory was needed. Coach Karras and the Knights did not disappoint in front of over 1,200 fans on a rain-soaked afternoon at St.Vincent Health Field. The fifteenth-ranked Knights picked up their second-ever shutout with a 28-0 victory that was truly never close.

Junior Nick Bradford capped a 10-play, 78-yard drive with a 13-yard touch-down run to put MU on the board in the first quarter. Senior Clay Coomer scored on a nine-yard run to put MU up 14-0 with 7:45 remaining in the half. Coomer then hit junior John Hasty with a 35-yard touchdown pass to cap a nine-play, 67-yard drive and put MU out in front for good at 21-0 heading into halftime.

Coomer hit senior Chris Rutherford with a nine-yard touchdown pass to put MU up 28-0 late in the third quarter and the defense took control from there.

The defense held the Trojans to the second-lowest number of total yards (143) in school history and the lowest number of passing yards (64) in school history.

Once again, the stage was set as the 15th-ranked and 4-1 Knights were slated to travel to third-ranked Saint Xavier University in a second clash of the titans in 2010.

With a 4-1 record in hand and ranked fourteenth in the nation, the Knights went into Chicago, Illinois looking to hand third-ranked and defending MSFA Mideast League champion Saint Xavier University its first loss of the sea-son. However, the Knights were unable to recover from a 28-12 halftime deficit in a 56-25 defeat at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field to fall to 4-2 on the year.

SXU opened a 14-0 lead just 6:27 into the game on a touchdown pass and a punt return for a score. Senior Clay Coomer hit senior John Pfifer with a 12-yard touchdown pass to answer one of the SXU scores and make the score 14-6 with 4:48 to go in the first quarter. It was then that everyone in atten-dance knew it was going to be a shootout.

Coomer hit junior Eric Duncan with a 19-yard touchdown pass just five seconds in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-12, but SXU scored two more times before the end of the half to open a 28-12 halftime lead.

The Knights came out of the locker room looking to seize the early momentum and senior Joey Neberieza did exactly that with a 32-yard touchdown reception from Coomer just two minutes into the second half. The Knights were within 10 at 28-18. The Knights’ defense stopped the Cougars on three straight possessions in the third quarter, but could get little momentum going on offense and a stalemate ensued until the 1:03 mark. SXU broke through to open a 35-18 lead after three quarters.

Coomer hit senior JaQuan Patilla just 12 seconds into the final frame to cut it back to 10 at 35-25. However, back-to-back mistakes on offense led to 14 SXU points and a 49-25 lead with 10:19 to go in the fourth. The Cougars added one more to pick up the 56-25 win, but the Knights left Deaton Field knowing a couple of bounces could have changed the ballgame, so their confidence was not shaken.

A quick recovery was in order as the 4-2 Knights were slated to play host to Olivet Nazarene Univer-sity at St.Vincent Health Field on Homecoming.

After dropping two of three, both to top 10-ranked opponents, the eigh-teenth-ranked Knights needed another decisive win to continue their rise to the NAIA elite. They did not disappoint the over 1,600 fans at St.Vincent Health Field with a dominant 42-16 victory over Olivet Nazarene University.

The Knights dropped four spots in the national poll after their second de-feat, but came out on fire with 35 first half points in the rout to stake their claim to the top 15.

Seniors Clay Coomer and Chris Rutherford had career days as they ex-ploded against the Tigers. Coomer hit Rutherford with a 61-yard touchdown pass just 1:12 into the game and then hit him again for the longest touch-down pass in school history. The duo hooked up from 90 yards to put MU out in front 13-0 with 5:58 to go in the first quarter. Junior Dustin Craig made it 21-0 with a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown and the Knights were able to put it on cruise control the rest of the way.

An ONU score cut it to 21-6, but the ensuing kickoff was returned 90 yards by Rutherford for the program’s first-ever kickoff return touchdown. ONU hit a 28-yard field goal to cut it to 28-9, but another big return put the Knights at the ONU 27-yard line and Patilla hit junior Eric Duncan with a 27-yard pass to open a 35-9 halftime lead.

ONU scored out of the locker room to cut it to 35-16, but Coomer hit Rutherford one last time on a 20-yard touchdown pass to seal the 42-16 win and give MU two 40-point games in 2010.

The win would mark the beginning of an unprecedented run for the Knights as they improved to 5-2 on the year.

The victory over ONU vaulted the Knights back up four spots to number 14 in the NAIA poll, but they needed to continue their winning ways. The first-year program at Notre Dame College (OH) greeted the Knights and made it interesting. MU was able to pull away with a 14-point fourth quarter in securing a 35-22 win to improve to 6-2 on the year.

An early interception return for a touchdown put the Knights behind 7-0 midway through the first quarter. MU answered with a five-yard touchdown pass from senior Clay Coomer to junior Julian Williams to tie the score with 2:24 to go in the first frame. A 22-yard field goal put NDC back in front at 10-7 with 12:49 to go in the half, but Coomer hooked up with Williams from 29 yards out to give MU a 14-10 lead with 9:31 to go in the half. Sophomore Kyle Jones punched in a one-yard run to put MU up 21-10 with 24 seconds to go in the second.

NDC scored the only points of the third quarter, but a pair of two-yard touchdown runs by senior JaQuan Patilla put the Knights out in front 35-16 with 11:06 to go in the game. NDC would add one more score to make the final 35-22 and push the Knights to 6-2 on the year.

Two straight wins and a 6-2 mark put the Knights in a position to contend for the playoffs, but with three games to go in the regular season, it would be a daunting task.

The Knights’ were rolling again as they came to Wheeler Stadium in Up-land, Indiana riding two straight victories, a 6-2 overall record and their high-est-ever national ranking at number 12. However, upset-minded Taylor Uni-versity was the opponent and the Knights did not forget what happened on Homecoming in 2009. They scored once in each of the first three quarters and let the defense handle the Trojans to earn a 20-6 win and improve to 7-2 on the season to match the program’s high in victories for a single season.

Senior Joey Neberieza broke free for a 53-yard touchdown run with 8:12 to go in the first quarter to open a 7-0 lead. Senior Clay Coomer hit senior Chris Ruth-erford with a 38-yard touchdown pass to put the Knights up 14-0 at the half.

A 45-yard interception return for a touchdown by sophomore Nathan Toon put the Knights in front 20-0 with 12:19 to go in the third quarter. Taylor scored a touchdown with on the ensuing drive to seize some of the momentum, but after each team punted and a missed MU field goal, junior Eric Sheppard picked off his second pass of the day in the end zone to steal the momentum back early in the fourth quarter. Sheppard was named NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week after this game. The defense shut down the Trojans for the rest of the quarter and avenged the 2009 defeat with the 20-6 victory.

The attitude was one down and two to go as the Knights were 7-2 and riding a three-game win streak.

The twelfth-ranked Knights traveled to storied Fawcett Stadium riding a three-game win streak and their highest-ever ranking to take on Malone University. The Knights ran away from the Pioneers quickly as they utilized 25 second-quarter points to pick up a 28-7 win and their fourth straight vic-tory. They were now 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the MSFA Mideast League with one week remaining in the regular season.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Knights jumped all over Malone from the outset of the second frame. Sophomore Clifford Brown was on the end of a 13-yard middle screen that went for a touchdown to cap an 11-play, 68-yard drive with 14:54 to go in the second. Coomer hit junior Julian Williams with a 30-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 13-0 before Coomer hit senior Chris Rutherford with the longest pass play in MU history. The duo hooked up from 91 yards, their second 90-yard or more pass of the season, to put MU up 19-0 with 5:21 left in the half. Coomer hit senior JaQuan Patilla from 32 yards out, on what was described as the best pass of his career, to open a 25-0 lead at the half.

Both teams went scoreless in the third before a Malone score broke up the shutout early in the fourth. Sophomore Zach Sparks hit a 32-yard field goal to put the game away with 11:49 to go as the defense dug in its heels again. MU won its fourth game in a row with the 28-7 win and notched its record-breaking eighth win of the campaign.

The final showdown of the season was the single-most important game in the four-year history of the MU program. The Knights, ranked 11th (their highest-ever), took on 20th-ranked Walsh University in front of more than 2,000 fans at St.Vincent Health Field in what was a “winner-take-all” match-up. The winner of the game was virtually assured a spot in the NAIA Football Championship Series as a third representative from the MSFA MEL.

The teams felt each other out over the first 15 minutes before MU struck with 9:53 to go in the half. Senior Clay Coomer hit sophomore Clifford Brown on a five-yard touchdown pass to open a 7-0 lead. Walsh answered quickly with a touchdown to tie it at seven with 8:04 to go. Coomer hit junior John Hasty with a 17-yard touchdown strike to put MU up 13-7 heading into the interval. The final 30 minutes would decide who was going to the NAIA Football Championship Series and the Knights did not disappoint out of the locker room.

Coomer hit junior Julian Williams with a 31-yard touchdown pass and senior JaQuan Patilla scored on a nine-yard run to bust the game open at 26-7 with 5:51 to go in the third. Walsh scored with 52 seconds to go in the third to cut it to 26-14, but Coomer would take one in from three yards out and would hit Patilla with a 23-yard touchdown pass to put the game out of reach. The defense was shut down Walsh the rest of the way to give MU the 38-14 win and their ninth victory of the season.

It came down to whether or not the NAIA would select the 11th-ranked Knights and on November 14, 2010, Marian University was named as an at-large selection for the NAIA Football Championship Series. Their opponent was to be eighth-ranked Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas.

The Knights had done it. They earned the NAIA FCS berth and had a 9-2 overall record, their best-ever. But, a daunting task was placed in front of MU. They had to travel to Ottawa University and People’s Bank Field where no opponent had earned a win since 2007. The eighth-ranked Braves were not eager to allow that streak to end.

The Braves marched right down the field on the opening drive and scored on a botched handoff to stake themselves a 7-0 lead. The Knights answered with a 13-play, 64-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard plunge by senior JaQuan Patilla to tie the score at 7-7. The Knights would take a 14-7 lead on a one-yard burst by junior Nick Bradford with 11:55 to go in the half. Ottawa tallied a 42-yard field goal with 10:55 to go before the Knights marched down the field on the Braves one more time midway through the second. However, a 98-yard inter-ception return for a touchdown gave the Braves a 17-14 lead with 7:17 to go in the half. They added a 46-yard field goal to take a 20-14 lead into the locker room and it looked as if the Knights would have trouble coming back with the momentum the Braves had seized.

That thought would be completely incorrect. The defense sparked the Knights as junior Suavve Barker picked off a pass and returned it 53 yards to the Braves’ two-yard line with 9:29 on the clock. Sophomore Kyle Jones punched it in from two yards out to put MU in front 21-20. The defense would continue to hold and Jones scored for a second time from two yards to cap a 14-play, 80-yard drive to chewed up 5:43 of the third quarter and gave MU a 28-20 lead. The momentum was now on Marian University’s side.

Senior Clay Coomer hooked up with senior Chris Rutherford on an eight-yard touchdown pass to put MU in front 35-20 with 11:41 to go in the game. The defense, led by senior Brock Caraboa who was named the Defensive Player of the Game, held Ottawa scoreless for the entire second half and secured the Knights’ first-ever NAIA Football Championship Series victory. The win snapped the Braves’ home win streak and sent the Knights to their first-ever 10-win season.

However, there were three options that existed for the Knights in the NAIA FCS Elite Eight. They were going to travel to either Chicago, Illinois, Sioux Falls, South Dakota or Helena, Montana to be greeted by number three, number one or number two in the country. The location was named on Saturday night. Marian University was going to five-time national champion and second-ranked Car-roll College in Helena, Montana on November 27.

From the swamp to the mountains. That was the rallying cry for the Knights as they traveled to five-time national champion and second-ranked Carroll College at legendary Nelson Stadium for the NAIA FCS quarterfinals.

The Knights took the second-most potent passing offense from the Mid-States Football Association into the Frontier League champions and tried to put the Saints to the test, but Carroll was able to stave off the upset bid to earn a 38-6 win over the Knights en route to their sixth national cham-pionship.

The 11th-ranked Knights and Saints went back-and-forth to open the game, but the Saints went on an 11-play, 70-yard drive that chewed 5:16 off the first quarter clock to take a 7-0 lead. MU answered as Nick Bradford capped a seven-play, 74-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge to bring the score to 7-6 after a quarter of play.

After the teams played to a stalemate for most of the second quarter, the Saints finall pushed through with a 24-yard touchdown pass to take a 13-6 lead before an interception late in the half allowed Carroll to put one more in the end zone before the interval and take a 21-6 lead.

The Carroll defense stiffened in the second half and the Knights had no answer for their short passing game and their relentless rushing attack as they scored 17 points in the final 30 minutes to earn a 38-6 win and earn another bid into the NAIA FCS semifinals.

The Knights’ season had come to an end, but what a ride! Not only did the Knights earn their first-ever 10-win season (10-3), but they also got the opportunity to take on the then-five-time national champions. While the season ended on that day, the Knights were able to set records across the board in 2010 and solidify themselves as an elite NAIA program.
