Megan Thomson enters her fifth season as the head coach of the Pacific women’s water polo team in 2011, after coaching the women’s team to its first regular season con-ference title in program history.

During Pacific’s second season of action in the Big West Conference (BWC), Thomson led the Tigers to new program milestones, includ-ing most wins in a season (23) and single season saves by a goalkeeper (290). Under Thomson’s direction, Pacific secured the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament when the Tigers went undefeated in the final weekend of conference action at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. In a wild shoot-out, Pacific upset No. 10 Cal State Northridge, 8-7, in sudden death overtime on April 17 and followed up with a 13-9 win over UC Santa Barbara on April 18, 2010. Thomson also saw her first Tiger, Dara Tawara-hara, receive All-American Honor-able Mention Honors, while Brooke Millar, Jasmine Myles, Bridget Geck and Tawarahara were named to the Big West All-Conference Team. Thomson and the 2010 squad wrapped up the season with a 1-1 performance at the conference tournament for a third place finish.

As a member of the newly formed BWC in 2009, Thomson and the Ti-gers finished the season with a 9-25 record while earning a victory over conference opponent UC Santa Bar-bara.

In her first year with the team, during the 2007 season, Thomson

reshaped the Tigers with a young squad that featured seven fresh-men and only one senior. She then led the Tigers to an overall record of 5-25, just one season after the team completed the 2006 season with a record of 0-22. In 2008, the Tigers finished with a 4-27 record, high-lighted by a 10-9 victory over Colo-rado State on Mar. 16, 2008.

Thomson was brought to Pacific after four seasons as an assistant coach at Hartwick College, where she helped lead her team to two ap-pearances in the NCAA Champion-ships. Megan guided the team to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championships at the final four hosted by Stanford in 2004. Two years later, Thomson and the Hawks returned to the NCAA Champion-ships.

Thomson played two years (2001-02) as the starting center at Hartwick College under former Pacific men’s water polo coach Mike Maroney. She led the Hawks to a 48-23 re-cord, two Collegiate Water Polo As-sociation (CWPA) Northern Division Championships, two CWPA New York Region Titles and one Eastern College Athletic Conference Cham-pionship (2002). She was named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-America Team after her junior and senior seasons, and was honored as the CWPA Northern Division Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002. In addition, Thomson was named to the AWPCA All-Academic Team in both of her seasons with the Hawks.

A native of Wellington, New Zea-land, Thomson finished her career with 234 points (182 goals, 52 as-sists) and 180 drawn ejections. She led the Hawks to a second-place finish at the 2002 CWPA Champion-ships, losing, 7-6, to the University of Michigan in sudden-death over-time in the final. Hartwick would have advanced to the NCAA Cham-pionships (Final Four) that year, had they defeated the Wolverines in that contest.

Hartwick College named Thom-son its Female Athlete of the Year in 2001 and 2002. She was inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 12, 2002. Thomson played for the New Zealand Na-tional Team at the 2001 FINA World

Championships in Japan as she fin-ished among the top 20 goal scorers in the championships. She was the captain of the New Zealand Devel-opment Team in 2000, and played on the New Zealand Under-20 Na-tional Team from 1996-99. She was also the co-captain of the New Zea-land Senior Women’s team at the Commonwealth Game Champion-ships in Perth, Australia in January 2006, finishing with a bronze medal.

Thomson captained the national squad at the 2003 Olympic Qualifi-cation Series, and was a member of the national team that competed in the Olympic Qualification Tourna-ment in Italy.

Thomason earned her bachelor’s degree in business in 2002 from Hartwick. In 2008, she graduated from the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy.

After a 2-3 showing at the NorCal Tournament in Berkeley, Calif., Pacific’s women’s water polo team came togeth-er as a squad and turned the 2010 sea-son into a record breaking year. Pacific’s 33 contests included new records for conference wins and overall wins dur-ing a single season, and a 13-0 win streak over a six week period. Additionally Pa-cific saw a new Tiger claim the top spot in the All-Time Single Season Saves list. Entering the Roadrunner Invite, Pa-cific earned its first ranking in the Col-legiate Water Polo Association’s (CWPA) Top-20 national poll since April 22, 2005. As the No. 16 team in the nation at the tournament, the Tigers went 3-1 against competition and outscored opponents 44-25. While the month of February proved to be an exciting time for the Tigers, the months of March and April had bigger things to come for Pacific. On March 6, 2010, at the Cal Lutheran Invite, the Tigers defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 16-2, to tie the 2005 Tiger squad for most wins in a season with 11. The 2010 Tigers then went on to set a new program record for most wins in a sea-son when Pacific defeated Wager, 14-11. With a 20-9 (2-1 Big West) record heading into the last four games of Big West action during the month of April, the Tigers found themselves in a posi-tion to claim their first Big West regular season title in program history.

Pacific’s final home stand of the 2010 season proved to be the Tigers’ best performances of the year. After upset-ting No. 10 Cal State Northridge and No. 12 UC Santa Barbara to finish the regular season as Big West Co-Champions, Pa-cific’s women’s water polo team jumped four spots to No. 12 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s (CWPA) Top-20 national poll, which marked Pacific’s highest ranking during the season and was also the highest ranking in program history. Pacific’s game against No. 10 Cal State Northridge on Saturday, April 17, was a wild shootout which had five tie scores and six lead changes. In the end, Pacific took down the Matadors, 8-7, in sudden death on a goal from junior Bridget Geck with 2:39 left on the clock in the first sudden death period. During the game freshman Brooke Millar set a new single season saves record. At the 4:34 point in the third quarter, Millar’s fifth save of the contest gave her 254 saves on the season to tie former Tiger Julie Ross. Millar then moved to the top of Pacific’s All-Time Single Season Saves list with 1:22 remaining on the clock when she blocked a shot from the Mat-adors’ Kristin McLaughlin. On Sunday, April 18, the Tigers needed a win over No. 12 UC Santa Barbara to claim the Tigers’ first Big West regular season title in program history. In the contest, Geck

and Dara Tawarahara notched three goals apiece to help the Tigers defeat the Gauchos 13-9, and end the regular season as Big West Co-Champions with Cal State Northridge. The Tigers then entered the 2010 Big West Tournament as the No. 1 seed and faced off against the No. 4 seed UC Davis Aggies. Pacific concluded the tourna-ment with a 1-1 record for a third place finish. At the tournament, the Tigers dropped a 10-7 decision to UC Davis in the semifinals; however they rebounded with a 7-5 win over UC Santa Barbara in the third place game.

Chris Kjeldsen Pool

The Chris Kjeldsen pool complex has served the University of the Pacific and Stockton communities well for 25 years. In 1995-96, under the direction of former athletic director Bob Lee, the athletic department raised funds to make the swimming program and facilities at Pacific among the very best in the country, with completion of the Pacific Aquatics Center.

The addition of the Pacific Aquatics Center to the Kjeldsen Swimming Complex cost an estimated $400,000. It is located on the east side of the pool complex and contains 4,000 square feet of space. Hot showers and locker rooms are available to serve recreational and competitive swimmers from the campus and local community, and office space houses coaches and lifeguards for the program. Meeting areas for athletic and social events are also found there.

Ample storage space is available to protect swimming pool equipment from the effects of weather. The facility provides a safer entry to the pool for physically challenged swimmers; in addition, it allows control of access for optimum supervision of the pool area.

The pool and the pool deck underwent a renovation in 2008 as the pool was resurfaced with new siding to make it one of the faster pools in the Big West Conference.

The Chris Kjeldsen Swimming Complex is located on Larry Heller Drive at the southeast corner of Amos Alonzo Stagg Memorial Stadium, home to the women’s soccer team. Directly across the street is the Alex G. Spanos Center, which hosts the Tiger volleyball and basketball teams; also nearby is the home field for women’s softball, Bill Simoni Field.
