2010 SEASON PREVIEW Returning for his third season at the helm of the men’s water polo pro-gram is head coach James Graham, who in his second season made his firsttriptotheMPSFTournamentaf-ter his team upset No. 6 Long Beach StateintheTigers’finalhomegameat Chris Kjeldsen Pool. With the departure of seniors Lorin Bartlett, Joey Rossi, Grant Hol-lis and David Andrus, Graham set out to acquire new talent that could replace an outgoing senior class that helped the Tigers reach the MPSFTournament for thefirst timesince the 2006 season. “Although it’s a great loss to see them go, we have players who are fully capable of stepping into their roles and maybe adding another dimension for us.” The 2010 incoming class fea-tures three international players who have a vast amount of playing experience at the international level. Junior transfer Daniel Lungu and freshman Alex Malkis hail from Is-rael, where both have experience playing for Israel’s senior national team. Malkis is currently the starting goalkeeper for Israel’s senior nation-al team, while Lungu played for the senior squad from 2006-07 in addi-tion to the junior national team from 2005-08. Freshman Balazs Erdelyi of Eger, Hungary is expected to make an immediate impact in the pool for the Tigers. Erdelyi is a three-time Hungarian Junior Championship win-ner from 2007-09, and has been a member of the Hungarian senior na-tional team for the past two years. “We expect those three players to have huge impacts, with Alex Mal-kis in goal who should be one of the top goalies in the country as a fresh-man,” said Graham on his 2010 in-coming class. “Balazs Erdelyi is go-ing to be one of the biggest impact players in the MPSF right off the bat at both ends of the pool. Daniel Lun-gu is a tremendous offensive player for us and a left handed shooter. Although this year’s recruiting class

was smaller than last year, this re-cruiting class is just as talented if not more at the top end.” Graham expects seniors Joey Gullikson and Austin Delong to have tremendous seasons both of-fensively and defensively. This year the Tigers are expecting to be a more experienced team compared to last season’s squad. Last year’s incom-ing class has had a full year to play together and had a great off season which saw the addition of only three new players to the lineup. “We have the talent, experi-ence at all positions and the depth to match other teams. We expect to have 12 field players who areprepared to play large minutes this year.” Aswithanyseason,Pacific’sex-pectations are to continue to make progress every season and to have a better season that the last. The 2010 Tigers aim to make the MPSF Tournament for the second year in a row, but with the goal of having a better showing at the tournament by winningthefirstroundgame. “This year I think the team is poised to have a great season with finallyhaving thedangerouscombi-nation of experience and talent at all positions,” stated Graham on his 2010 squad. “That’s really what we were missing last year; the experi-ence.” On the offensive front Graham will look to junior Lance Morrison at the center position and Erdelyi, Gullikson, Lungu and Tom Koning to leadPacific’sscoringattack.Koningfinished the2009seasonasPacif-ic’s leading scorer, tallying 50 goals in 31 games. Morrison and Gullik-son scored 38 goals a piece to tie for second in goals on the team. Defensively the Tigers will be led by returning seniors Gullikson and Delong, with Gullikson transitioning fromattackertodefenderinhisfinalseason. During the 2009 season, Delong led the Tigers in steals (44) and assists (31). Pacific will also

look to junior Tyler Reardon and Malkis to anchor the Tiger defense. As a sophomore Reardon recorded 27 steals and 15 drawn ejections. Pacificalso returnssophomoreGoran Tomasevic, who is making the transition from defender to center. Tomasevic ended his freshman cam-paign earning the MSPF Newcomer of the Year Award in addition to earn-ing All-America honors. Also looking to step up and make contributions this season are Todd Hazen, Jason Wensley, T.J Friedman and Balazs Szabo for the Tigers.

In 2010-2011, the MPSF will again provide competition in nine Olympic intercollegiate sports while serving over 1,500 student-athletes and approximately 75 head coaches from 32 universities in 12 western states. Al Beaird has been the Federation’s only executive director, taking the reigns after being selected by the MPSF Administrative Commit-tee in December 1997 after a national search. Beaird’s position was established as a result of the Federation’s continued growth and emerging tradition of NCAA and national championship caliber play, including 38 NCAA team championships during his tenure. Beaird, who formerly served on the athletics staff at his alma mater UC Davis, where the integration of student and athlete is a long-rooted phi-losophy, oversees the administration of all Federation sports, having worked closely with administrators and coaches from more than 40 different universities over the course of his administration. Beaird presided over the transition of the Federation from what was initially a scheduling alliance to what is now a nationally recognized NCAA Division I multi-sports conference. Beaird directs all aspects of MPSF competition, includingchampionships, officiating, rulescompliance, scheduling, mediarelations, broadcasting, sponsorshipsandNCAArelations, while also shaping conference legislation, facilitating annual meetings and providing direction and communication for the MountainPacificSportsFederationAdministrativeandExecutiveCommittees.In2004,Beairdcompletedafour-yearterm,threeyearsaschair, on the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championships Committee and one year as chair of the inaugural NCAA Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Rules Committee. Beaird feels privileged to work with coaches and student-athletes who compete at the highest levels, including many who compete on USA national teams as coaches or players in international and Olympic competition. With his high level of involve-ment in NCAA Olympic sports, Beaird is often called upon to serve as liaison to the national governing bodies for amateur athletics in the United States and the United States Olympic Committee. Beaird received his undergraduate degree in physical education from UC Davis in 1977 before attaining his Masters of Business Administration (Marketing emphasis) from California State University, Sacramento in 1993. Beaird, who lives in Woodland, California, has two daughters who are active in high school and club sports.

THE UNIVERSITY

Lynn King is in his 11th year as director of athletics for University of the Pacific. He began his tenure in March 2000. During his time at Pacific, King has seen the Tigers claim 18 Big West Confer-ence team titles. Pacific has also made 28 NCAA Championship appearances under King’s guidance. In King’s first year at Pacific, the Tigers ranked first among NCAA Division I-AAA schools in the national Sears Directors Cup standings in 2000-01, surpassing all 78

other non-football Division I universities. The Tigers have also excelled in the classroom since King’s arrival, boasting six CoSida Academic All-Americans and 37 CoSida Academic All-District Team athletes since 2000-01. In 2002-03 alone, four Pacific teams were recognized with national team academic awards “Lynn King has provided our athletic department with tremendous leadership and direction. Pacific Athletics have reached new levels of success both athletically and academically,” said former President Donald V. DeRosa. King is currently leading Pacific on a campaign to build two new facilities (a multipurpose gymnasium [the Janssen-Lagorio Gymnasium] for athletics and recreation and a tennis clubhouse), expand the Alex G. Spanos Center to include an athletics Hall of Fame and substantially increase the athletics endowment. This campaign is already well underway as construction of Klein Family Field and renovations to Chris Kjeldsen Pool have been completed. In addition, construction of the Janssen-Lagorio Gymnasium is scheduled for completion at the beginning of the 2009-10 academic year. Before coming to Pacific, King chaired the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s track and field subcommittee from 1995 to 1999 and served as Drake’s director of intercollegiate athletics since 1990. Under the leadership of King, Drake’s Bulldog Scholarship Fund grew in both record numbers and money pledged in support of Drake athletics. Among his accomplishments at Drake, King played a major role in raising $12.5 million for design and construction of the 7,000-seat Knapp Multi Purpose Center. King also spearheaded successful efforts that enabled Drake’s athletics program to be officially certified by the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification in the spring of 1998. The certification followed the committee’s review of Drake’s athletics program self-study and review of a report by a peer-review team that visited the campus in November of 1997. King previously served as director of intercollegiate athletics for University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh and assistant athletic director for facilities at the University of Northern Iowa, of which he is an alumnus. King began his career as head coach for men’s track and cross country, first at Rochester Community College and then at University of Northern Iowa, where he was also an instructor of health and physical education. While at Northern Iowa he coached 11 conference team champions, 25 All-Americans and two national champions. He was named regional or conference coach of the year 10 times and referee of the Drake Relays in 1984. King earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education. In October of 2008, he was inducted into the Northern Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame. He was a member of the executive committee and a director of the Greater Des Moines Sports Authority, a director of the Iowa Games board, and the 1995 National Junior Olympics Organizing Committee. He and his wife, Jan, are parents of two adult children, Jason, and Kelly.

In her sixth year at Pacific, Holly Trexler is the Associ-ate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Services and Compliance. She became Pacific’s Senior Women’s Administrator in September of 2008. Among her du-ties, Trexler oversees compliance, academic support, student services, the Pacific Student Athlete Council (PSAC) as well as the CHAMPS/Life Skills program. In addition, Trexler is currently serving on the NCAA Leadership Selection Committee. Before coming to Pacific, Trexler was the assistant athletic director for academic support/life skills coordinator at Quinnipiac University from 2002-05. At Quinnipiac, she monitored the academic progress and eligibility status of all student-athletes, in addition to overseeing academic programming and support services. Trexler was also responsible for the CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Prior to her time at Quinnipiac, Trexler spent the previous three years as assistant athletic director for eligibility and student services/senior woman administrator at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C. Her duties at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference school included the monitoring of academic records and eligibility status of 300 student-athletes. She also oversaw the academic programming and support services. From 1993 to 1999, Trexler worked at the University of Kansas as a strategic learning assistant and Mentor. In her position, she developed learning strategies for at-risk student-athletes and assisted with subject matter and overall academic development. Trexler holds three degrees from the University of Kansas. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and African-American studies in 1995. She was awarded her Juris Doctorate from the Kansas School of Law in 1998. A year later, in 1999, she finished her master’s in education.

The Chris Kjeldsen pool complex has served the University of the Pacific and Stockton communities well for 25 years. In 1995-96, under the direction of former athletic director Bob Lee, the athletic department raised funds to make the swimming program and facilities at Pacific among the very best in the country, with completion of the Pacific Aquatics Center.

The addition of the Pacific Aquatics Center to the Kjeldsen Swimming Complex cost an estimated $400,000. It is located on the east side of the pool complex and contains 4,000 square feet of space. Hot showers and locker rooms are available to serve recreational and competitive swimmers from the campus and local community, and office space houses coaches and lifeguards for the program. Meeting areas for athletic and social events are also found there.

Ample storage space is available to protect swimming pool equipment from the effects of weather. The facility provides a safer entry to the pool for physically challenged swimmers; in addition, it allows control of access for optimum supervision of the pool area.

The pool and the pool deck underwent a renovation in 2008 as the pool was resurfaced with new siding to make it one of the faster pools in the Big West Conference.

The Chris Kjeldsen Swimming Complex is located on Larry Heller Drive at the southeast corner of Amos Alonzo Stagg Memorial Stadium, home to the women’s soccer team. Directly across the street is the Alex G. Spanos Center, which hosts the Tiger volleyball and basketball teams; also nearby is the home field for women’s softball, Bill Simoni Field.
