Small town. Big school.UC Davis is ranked 16th among public universities nationwide by the National Research Council, is listed 11th among public universities nationwide by U.S. News & World Report; and is 10th in research funding among all U.S. ranked public universities by the National Science Foundation. The campus is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, one of just 62 institutions of higher learning to be admitted to this distinguished group.

Founded in 1908 as the University Farm amid the fertile fields of the state’s Central Valley, UC Davis embarks on a centennial celebration during the 2008-09 academic year. The campus encompasses the colleges of Letters and Science, Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and professional schools in Law, Management, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Education. It also operates the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, one of the leading teaching and research hospitals in the nation. In 2007, the campus announced a $100 million in founding support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to launch the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

This is a period of growth and change for UC Davis. The campus has seen growth in student, faculty and staff populations and is in the midst of more than $1 billion in new construction. New facilities do or will include new laboratories, new classrooms and new student sports and recreation facilities. Thanks to the generosity of one of the world’s most renowned winemakers,

groundbreaking took place in 2005 on the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. The Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2002 and is a showcase part of the campus.

UC Davis has enjoyed a distinguished history in athletics as it continues a new era in NCAA Division I. The Aggies are official members in most sports in the Big West Conference which includes fellow UC campuses Irvine, Riverside and Santa Barbara. The transition to Division I brought to an end a successful Division II era in which UC Davis captured six Directors’ Cups in eight years, awarded annually to the most successful athletics program in the country. UC Davis also twice received recognition from Sports Illustrated for Women as the top Div. II school for women while Sports Illustrated has also previously honored the institution. In addition to 26 varsity sports (14 for women and 12 for men), the campus offers nearly 40 student-organized club sports. Women's field hockey will become the 27th varsity sport when it begins competition in 2009. And each year, more than 19,000 students participate in intramural sports.

All students can enjoy abundant on- and off-campus recreational facilities for tennis, softball, basketball, volleyball and golf. Given the area’s Mediterranean climate, outdoor recreation continues year round. The program is also among the nation’s leaders in NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients and has had three winners of the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award, tied for the most among all schools in the country.

STEVE DOTEN Head Coach10th YearCalifornia ’90

Steve Doten enters his 10th season at the helm of the UC Davis men’s water polo program. He enjoyed his best season to date in 2007, when his team won a school-record 22 games, went undefeated against mem-bers of the Western Water Polo Association, then advanced to the title game of the conference tournament. For his part, Doten was selected as WWPA Coach of the Year.

During that season, UC Davis climbed as high as No. 8 in the national poll, finishing at No. 11. The previous year, the Aggies ascended to No. 6 in the collegiate rankings -- the highest in Doten’s career. The team posted six wins over top-10 programs during that season.

Additionally, his student-athletes have enjoyed a parade of accolades during recent seasons. In 2007, David Welch, Nick Arrigo and Mike Mc-Gee each earned ACWPC All-America honorable mention and claimed spots on the All-WWPA squad. McGee and Arrigo added third-team All-America honors in 2008.

On October 5, 2007, UC Davis defeated 15th-ranked Pacific by a final of 8-4, marking Doten’s 100th career victory. He enters the upcom-ing season with a career mark of 123-112 overall, including a 76-33 conference ledger.

Doten’s teams also have enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom. The Aggies’ composite grade-point average has risen each year since his arrival. In 2006-07, Doten’s squad was a co-winner of the athletics department’s Lysle Leach Award for sporting the highest overall team GPA. Four made the ACWPC All-Academic squad, including the inclu-sion of Welch in the Outstanding category. Welch also added ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second-team honors.

UC Davis men’s water polo repeated as co-recipient of the Lysle Leach Award in 2008 and was one of just five teams nationwide to amass a cumulative GPA of better than 3.0 during the 2007-08 academic year. Furthermore, a total of 10 Aggies captured ACWPC All-Academic awards.

Other key seasons in Doten’s UC Davis career include the 2002 campaign, in which the Aggies tied the school record with 19 wins. That team also posted 15 wins in the WWPA, the highest mark since 1990. In 2001, his first season at UC Davis, Doten was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year. He also guided two players, Travis Engelman and Tim Rogers, to first-team All-American status.

In addition to his duties at UC Davis, Doten started the Davis Water Polo Club men’s open team in the summer of 2001, for which he serves as head coach. In 2003, both his junior and senior teams qualified for the USA Water Polo National Championships for the first time. In 2005, Doten brought the national tournament to Schaal Aquatics Center, where is 20-and-under team won the bronze medal. In 2008, Doten’s senior national team placed eighth, its highest-ever finish.

In 2004 and 2007, Doten was selected as Elite Coach of the Year for the Central California Zone by the USAWP Coaches Committee. Additionally, Doten served as president of the WWPA from 2003 to 2006. Then in 2009, he was chosen for the staff at the USA Water Polo Holiday Camp, an annual event for the Olympic Development Program (ODP).

Prior to UC Davis, Doten was an assistant coach with the Cal women’s water polo team from 1995-99. During this time, the Golden Bears fin-ished second at the Collegiate Water Polo National Championships in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Doten also served as a coach for the Golden Bear Water Polo Club team. He helped lead the team to two USWP national championships in 1998 and 1999.

As a player, Doten spent three seasons (1986-88) under legendary coaches Pete Cutino and Steve Heaston, helping Cal to a 91-14 record during that time and NCAA championships in 1987 and 1988. The Golden Bears were national runners-up in 1986. Doten, who graduated from UC Berkeley in 1990 with a degree in sports sociology, earned his master’s in kinesiology and physical education in 1994 and completed course work for his Ph.D. in education in 2000.

He and his wife, Lisa, have three children - daughters Kendall and Brooke, and son Trey. The family resides in Davis. All three children play for the Davis Water Polo Club.

Originally from Armijo High in Fairfield, Calif., Waldthaler earned JC All-America honors and a conference MVP nod for nearby Sierra College before embarking on her two-year career in Bloomington. As a senior, she led the Hoosiers with 55 goals, 55 drawn exclusions, five four-meter penalty shots and nine hat tricks to capture AWPCA (now ACWPC) All-America third-team distinction.

While at IU, Waldthaler retained her ties with Northern California, serving as a coach at Sierra Water Polo Club in 2004 then with Davis WPC in 2005. She served at the helm of the girls’ 12-and-under squad, solidifying her ties with Aggie mentors Steve Doten and Jamey Wright.

After playing pro ball for St. George of the Australian National Water Polo League, Waldthaler served as an assistant at Indiana for four years, partially while completing her masters’ studies. She received her M.S. in applied sports science in 2009. Waldthaler had also excelled as an IU undergrad, earning AWPCA All-Academic Superior accolades both years before graduating with her degree in exercise science.

Former Cal Poly swimmer and current UC Davis Ph.D. student Matt Sorgenfrei joins Steve Doten’s men’s water polo staff as a volunteer as-sistant. He will serve mostly as a team statistician.

An alumnus of Palo Alto High, Sorgenfrei competed in the 400 indi-vidual medley and 400 free relay before graduating with his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He then headed northward to UC Davis, completing his M.S. in the same field in 2009. During his time in Davis, Sorgenfrei made his acquaintance with Doten and the local water polo scene as a member of the Davis WPC.

Sorgenfrei enters his second year in the Ph.D. program at UC Davis. His younger brother, Mike, faced the Aggies on numerous occasions as a member of the Santa Clara water polo team.

Scholarly PursuitsUC Davis men’s water polo continues to showcase its talent in the classroom as well as the competition pool, with seven student-athletes earning All-Academic honors from either the ACWPC or the conference.

Perhaps more significantly, the Aggie team earned an NCAA Pub-lic Recognition award for Academic Progress Rate (APR) success. The NCAA bestows this distinction on teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their multi-year APRs.

The ACWPC awards three levels: Outstanding (3.71-4.00), Superior (3.41-3.70) and Excellent (3.20-3.40). The WWPA has no such designation, but requires that the honoree ranks in his team’s top 10 in minutes played.

SCHAAL AQUATICS CENTEROn April 21, 1998, former Aggie swimmer Rand Schaal and

his father Ted made a $1.4 million donation to the university, $1 million of which was earmarked toward the construction of a new aquatics facility.

That contribution, the largest in the history of the intercol-legiate athletics department, helped spur the 1999 Facilities And Campus Enhancement (F.A.C.E.) Initiative, which funded the re-mainder of the aquatics center as well as other campus venues.

The complex features an all-deep 65-meter by 25-yard pool with a depth ranging from seven feet to 14 feet (for diving pur-poses), men’s and women’s locker rooms, four team rooms, train-ing facilities, office space and a fixed-seating capacity for approxi-mately 500.

The Schaal Aquatics Center opened its doors during the 2003-04 season, serving UC Davis swimming and diving, and the Aggie men’s and women’s water polo programs. In its short lifetime, it has already hosted several championship events, including both the men’s and women’s WWPA Championships in 2004-05 and the 2005 USWP Men’s National Championships. The facility also serves as a home course for local club aquatics programs.

In May of 2006, Schaal Aquatics Center served as the host for the eight-team National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Champi-onship (shown below). The event marked the first time an NCAA final was held on the UC Davis campus since the Division II men’s gymnastics championships took place at Recreation Hall.
