Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool, which accommodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur.

Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands.

Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of six Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, three Eastern Water Polo Championships and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to the gorgeous facility.

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to

succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with

Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics.

Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSSETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the

playing fi elds. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-

tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly

at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s

student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all

Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates

three times, including in the most recent survey in the fall of 2013.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 136 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-

letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference

in 1990-91.

• A total of 402 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-

or Roll in 2013-14 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their

sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 498 made

the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2013-14.

• In addition to the 125 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced

since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 341 Academic All-District honor-

ees over the same span, including three in 2013-14.

• Bucknell has earned 98 Patriot League championships in 24 years in

the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 125 conference players of the

year, 104 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 581 individual league

champions from sports such as cross country, track & fi eld, swimming

& diving, tennis and golf.

• 25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in

the spring of 2014.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying

the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 24-year history of the

affi liation, including 14 of the last 17 years.

• Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn

State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-

ica selections with 125.

• A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-

lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which

opened fully in 2003. One of the fi nest collegiate athletics facilities of

its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-

pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the

Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s

Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports med-

icine suite, modern offi ces for coaches and staff , and locker room and

classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSA NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL

Bucknell Athletics is fi rst and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their fi rst priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be eff ective leaders on and off the playing fi elds. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Buck-nell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which aff ords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff , including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfi tted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and eff orts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its eighth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Page 6: 2014 Men's Water Polo Guide

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercol-legiate and intramural programs in higher educa- on, thereby advancing and drawing a en on to

the mission, core values, and educa onal goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their fi rst priority. It is therefore commi ed to maintaining Bucknell’s high na onal ranking for student-athletes’ gradua on rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to con nued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nomina ons, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priori es and suppor ng student-athletes’ educa on, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athle c opportuni es Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, develop-ment, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebra ng challenge and compe on; and by preparing par cipants for ser-vice and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athle c programs and recre-a onal opportuni es aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In crea ng shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff , as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substan ally to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long rela onships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s deci-sion to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the Na onal Collegiate Athle c Associa- on (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not

only because this level of compe on maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and serious-ness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps posi on Bucknell apart from other Na onal Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the compe ve suc-cess the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s Presidents’ Cup student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings dis nc on and na onal recogni- on to Bucknell.

A student-centered opera on, the Department is commi ed to providing equitable opportuni es to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regula ons of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athle c Conference, and the NCAA.

The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

2014 Season Preview2014 Season PreviewThe loss of a very talented six-person senior class to gradua on would

cause many coaches to be nervous about the following year. Not fourth-year Bucknell men's water polo coach John McBride.

"We shouldn't skip a beat in the pool off ensively or defensively," com-mented McBride, who has guided the Bison to three straight above-.500 seasons and an overall record of 46-35 since 2011. "We are not going to change anything we do."

The Class of 2014 combined to score 563 goals during its me at Bucknell making it the fourth-highest scoring class in program history. McBride thinks he has the pieces to con nue the success despite the losses.

McBride's off ense has always focused on the center posi on. Last year, seniors Jack Else (63g) and Mike Kimble (31g) traded playing me and totaled more than one-third of the team's goals. This year, McBride will turn the center posi on over to sophomore Nate Hunter and freshman Jeff Hagen.

"They're going to have to come in quickly and fi ll the role that Jack and Mike le ," said McBride. "It will be a growing process for them. I don't ex-pect them to be great in the beginning, but halfway through the year they should be up to speed and ready for the championship part of the season."

Hunter saw limited minutes last year and scored six goals, while Hagen is part of a talented fi ve-person freshman class that will ba le for playing me.

While the Bison lost plenty to gradua on, four starters do return, in-cluding junior Stefan Aleksic, an all-conference player and an Honorable Men on All-America selec on. The team's leading scorer each of the last two years, Aleksic is coming off a season in which he totaled 42 goals, 36 assists and a team-high 41 steals. He also led the squad with 21 fi eld blocks.

"Stefan has matured," praised McBride. "He understands he has to be more of a leader and the quarterback of the off ense. Most teams will try to knock him down to prevent him from scoring, which will set up other guys to be successful."

The team's second-leading returning scorer is co-captain Nick Hale. A junior, Hale has totaled 29 goals and 45 assists through his fi rst two cam-paigns. Last year he was second on the team to Aleksic with 27 assists and his 33 steals were also second on the squad.

"He's bigger, stronger and smarter," raved McBride. "He's a hard worker. Everyone respects him and looks up to him. He could be a dominant player for us and that is what we expect."

Hale's fellow co-captain is returning star ng goalie Keegan Williams, one of just two seniors on the team along with Ken Wa ana. A er serving as a backup to future professional goalie Ma Napleton his fi rst two years, Williams shined in his fi rst year as a starter last fall. The Menlo Park, Cali-fornia, na ve started all 25 games and recorded a career-high 207 saves. He also posted 26 steals and registered three assists.

"Keegan was the starter last year, but it is always an open compe on from game to game and prac ce to prac ce, so he has to earn the right to con nue in that star ng posi on," men oned McBride. "Hopefully he has

trained hard and is ready for a strong senior season."Sophomore Patrick McKenzie and freshman Charlie Niehaus will push

Williams for the star ng posi on. McKenzie played 52 minutes in cage last year and posted 15 saves and a strong .556 save percentage. Niehaus was a two- me fi rst-team all-league performer at Mountain View High School in California.

Sophomore Ra mir Babic, who was a member of the star ng lineup 15 mes a year ago, is the other returning starter. He was the leading goal scorer among freshmen last fall with 15 and McBride will expect his game to be taken to the next level this season.

Babic, Hunter and McKenzie are three pieces of a seven-member sopho-more class that McBride expects a lot from this coming year. Also included in that group are Sean Daley and R.J. Moore, who were big contributors last season. Daley was the leading rookie scorer with 30 points (10g, 20a), while Moore started nine mes and totaled 19 points (10g, 9a). Daley and Moore combined to post 48 steals, 16 sprints won and 16 fi eld blocks.

"They have a lot of responsibility this year," noted McBride. "R.J. has to play well. There are a lot of good centers in the East, so he has to play smart and take them away. Sean is a good perimeter defender who will con nue to improve."

Other members of the sophomore class include Ma Bresnahan and Bre Cleary, who will have the chance to move into more prominent roles a er fi lling mostly reserve du es a year ago.

Jedd Thayer and Max Wilder round out the four-person junior class and will be counted on to produce as well a er serving mostly as role players over the fi rst half of their me as Bison.

Niehaus and Hagen are just the beginning of a talented rookie group. McBride is high on the freshman class, which also includes Grant Curry, Tommy Stupp and Jordan White. Stupp is the younger brother of former Bison Johnny Stupp, a 2010 Bucknell graduate.

"The freshmen are going to play, but we'll see how much," said McBride. "They were all great high school players, but we will have to see how that translates to playing with the big boys."

As is the case each year, defense is expected to be the strength of the Bison squad.

"We are going to score goals," commented McBride. "The challenge is to eliminate the goals the other team scores. Defense is always our greatest focus and we pride ourselves on that."

Leadership is another tradi onal strong point of the Bison and McBride has challenged captains Hale and Williams with that responsibility.

"It is up to Nick and Keegan to keep the guys on point and believing in the same thing and keeping the culture heading in the right direc on," McBride said. "We will help them and mentor them, but they were elected captains because the guys respect them and think they can help them win a championship this year."

JOHN MCBRIDEJOHN MCBRIDE

John McBride, who served as an assistant coach at Brown the previous sev-en years, was named the head men’s and women’s water polo coach at Buck-nell on May 18, 2011. McBride, a 1992 graduate of Rhode Island who was a four-year starter in goal as a member of the water polo program, also has an extensive background with the U.S. Na onal Team, serving as head coach of the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team since 2009.

Just three years into his Bucknell tenure, McBride has already guided the Bison programs for six seasons and been a part of 82 victories. He has led the men’s team to three consecu ve above-.500 records, a 2012 Southern Champi-onships tle and the program’s fi rst Eastern Championship tle game appear-ance in nearly 20 years. The men have fi nished above .500 seven mes in the last eight years and have had 10 consecu ve top-fi ve fi nishes at Easterns. The women’s squad has collected 36 victories the last three springs while playing extremely challenging schedules that have featured 32 ranked foes.

While at Brown, McBride helped guide the Bears to unprecedented success. The men’s squad captured the 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Associa on North-ern Division tle, its fi rst conference crown in nearly 25 years. Addi onally, the team went undefeated in regular-season conference play in 2008 and fi nished as high as fourth at the Eastern Championship.

On the women’s side, McBride led the Bears to back-to-back ECAC Champi-onship tles in 2009 and 2010 and a fourth-place fi nish at the Eastern Champi-onship, the best showing at Brown since 2001.

Both the men’s and women’s squads appeared regularly in the na onal top-20 rankings during McBride’s tenure, which also featured 43 All-Northern Divi-sion selec ons and 22 All-East players. Addi onally, three Bears earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

Brown’s men’s team had the highest team grade-point average in the na on for four years, while the women ranked in the top three na onally four mes.

A goalie on the U.S. Na onal “B” Team in 1993, McBride has become a rec-ognizable face in Na onal Team circles. In addi on to his du es as the men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team head coach, he has served as head coach of the Southeast Zone Olympic Development Program. McBride has also spent me as an evaluator and coach at the women’s Speedo Top 40 Camp at Harvard.

Among his many responsibili es with the Na onal Teams, McBride evalu-ates and coaches the top 16 men from the East Coast to compete for spots on the U.S. Na onal Team. He has also coached regional teams comprised of the best Northern California collegiate players and helps the U.S. Junior Na onal

Team Coaches bring the best players to rep-resent the U.S. in interna onal compe ons.

An accomplished goalie during his playing days at Rhode Island, McBride was a three- me First Team All-New England selec on and

was twice a First Team All-East honoree.Following his gradua on from Rhode

The Sco Schulte Award was established in 1980 in honor of the two- me water polo All-American and is presented annually to “the individual who contributes the most to Bucknell water polo.” 2011 Bucknell gradu-ate Richie Hyden was the most recent recipient of the pres gious award.

An All-East water polo selec on four straight years (1977-1980), Schulte led Bucknell to four Eastern cham-pionships, and set an all- me NCAA water polo career scoring record with 586 goals.

The high scorer in four straight NCAA Tournaments (the only player to accomplish this feat) and holder of the career record of 50 goals in NCAA championships, Schulte played on Bucknell teams that had a combined record of 114-15-3, and

he was a Second Team All-American in 1979 and 1980. He was the only player outside of California selected to those All-America squads.

He was twice selected to the AAU All-America First Team in water polo, and seven mes in his career fi nished in

the top six of an East Coast Conference Swimming Cham-pionship event. He won Buck-nell’s Christy Mathewson Award, which recognizes the top athlete of the senior class, in 1981.

Schulte was a member of the U.S. Na onal Team from

1980-84, was a First-Team Indoor All-American from 1981-85, was Most Valuable Player at the Indoor Na onals in 1981 and 1984, and competed in the World Uni-versity Games in 1981. He was inducted into the Bucknell Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Collegiate Water Polo Associa on Hall of Fame in 2006.

The Collegiate Water Polo Associa on announced that former Bucknell men’s water polo and swimming coach Dick Russell, along with Richard Hunkler of Slippery Rock, would compose the ini al class inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame in 2002. Both Russell and Hunkler laid the founda on for the organiza on that exists today and were instrumental in its development for almost 20 years.

Russell served Bucknell as an associate professor of physical educa on and de-veloped a local swim class program. It was there he founded a water polo club in 1968, which con nued un l 1977, when the team achieved varsity status. Between 1977 and 1986, Russell’s water polo teams tallied an amazing record of 223-68-4. This consis-tent success made Russell the fi rst coach in Bucknell history to record more than 100 victories in two sports, swimming and water polo. Under Russell the water polo teams won four Eastern Championships and competed in the NCAA Championship fi ve mes. He was named Eastern Water Polo

Coach of the Year in 1985.Although it seemed minor at the me,

one of his biggest achievements has had a tremendous impact on the sport through-out the country. Russell was the founder of the Mid-Atlan c Conference, now known as

the Collegiate Water Polo Associa on. Originally including only a few teams, his pioneer work in establishing this league laid the founda on for the na onwide conference that boasts over 220 teams today.

In 1968, Russell began his tenure at Bucknell as head swim coach and served in that capacity un l his re rement in 1994. While at the helm, he led the men’s swim program to a 154-121 record in dual meets, along with 11 conference championships. He was also named a Master Coach by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Associa on in 1978.

Russell began his coaching career at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio, amassing an 85-14 dual meet record before being named head swimming and golf coach, as well as a football assistant at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. While at Kenyon, Coach Russell won 33 of 52 dual meets and four Ohio Athle c Conference Championships in his years as coach.

Russell was inducted into the Bucknell University Athle cs Hall of Fame in 1997 and was presented with a plaque com-memora ng his contribu ons to the Bison water polo and swimming programs in January 2007.

Russell passed away in April of 2008 at the age of 75.

In the summer of 2009, it was an-nounced that Dan ’78 and Chris (Peterjohn ’76) Richards had pledged $1.5 million to the Bucknell men’s and women’s water polo programs in honor of Dick Russell.

The Collegiate Water Polo Associa on originally began as the Mid Atlan c Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.

The leadership and management of the organiza on relied on volunteer coaches un l 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams.

Offi cia ng assignments at the me were performed by an independent organiza on called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Associa on.

The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlan c. The new structure combined all

of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that me.

During the 1995 season, the conference received its fi rst major challenge, as the or-ganiza on experienced a strike by its offi ci-

a ng corps. This strike ul mately resulted in the organiza on establishing its own offi cia ng bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its offi cia ng assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Offi cials and Loren Bertocci as its fi rst Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Offi cia ng Bureau that exists today.

Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states na onwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity compe on and club com-pe on, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and infl uence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it con nues to grow.
