the 2007 LiONs2007 season Preview

True IdentityThe Lions missed a fourth straight WWPA title by just one goal a year ago and now it is up to a young team to lead them back to the top of the conference.

isknown.”In2007,theyoungrosterofLoyolaMarymountmen’swaterpoloteamwillhaveanopportunitytocreateabrandnewpersona,onethattheLionshopewillleadthemtotheirfifthWesternWaterPoloAssociationtitlesince2001.

In2006 the Lionswere ledby aneight-mansenior class that played over 350 games to-getherandwonthreeWWPAtitles.Thegroupmissedoutonafourthstraight title lastsea-sonasfourone-goalsetbackstorivalUCSanDiego, including the final one in the WWPAchampionshipmatch,attributedfourof theirfivesetbacksinWWPAplay.

TheLionswillhavetoovercomethelostlead-ershipoftheLions2006class,includinggoalieIanElliott,whobecamejustthefourthplayerinLMUhistorytobenamedfirst-teamall-confer-enceineachofhisfourseasonsofplay.How-ever,for11thyearheadcoachJohnLoughran,thisisachanceforagroupoftalentedyoungplayerstodefinetheirownidentity.

“This is one of the younger teams we havehad,” said Loughran, who is 171-134 in 10seasonsatLMU.“Sincewelostsomanystart-ers,thisgroupisanxioustoestablishitsownlegacyandidentity.Ourupperclassmenforthemostpartcameinasfreshmenandhavede-

velopreallygoodchemistry.”

LMU’srosterhas justfourfourth-yearplayersin JohnPrunckle,PatO’Brien,RoryKellyandShaunFlood.Amongthegroup,onlyKellyandFloodhaveconsiderableplayingexperienceastheyeachplayed31gamesayearago.FloodandKelly,alongwith four juniors;TimHum-mel, Julien Lormant, Mark Milovic, and TimHeafner;arethegroupLoughranbelieveshasa chance to let their identity lead the LionsbacktotheWWPAtitle.

“Thisteamwillplaytoitsstrengthsofquick-ness and speed,” said Loughran. “We areyoungandwewillneedplayerstostep-upintotheirrolerightaway.Theyshowedustheabil-itytodothatthissummer.”

Lormant was fifth on the team in goals lastseasonwith26andleadsthegroupofreturn-ingplayers in2007.FloodandHummeleach17 while Heafner and Milovic had 11 each.Redshirt sophomore Ryan Fair, who enteredintotheprogramthesameyearasthejuniors,alsohad17,includingthreeintheWWPAtitlegamelastyear.Kellyaddedsevengoalswhileplaying all 31games. Thegroup played in acombined210gameslastseason.

“FloodhasdevelopedintoaleaderforusandwiththeexperienceKellyearned lastseason,Iexpecthimtofilltheroleasasolidone-on-onedefenderwithgoodspeedonthecoun-

ter,” said Loughran. “Our other leaders areguyswhohavebeenkeyreserveplayerswhowill now have to fill the role as starter. Lor-mantandHummelhavestartedbeforeandasjuniors theywillneedtobebigcontributors.TherolesofMilovicandHeafnerwillalsoin-crease.”

ThecombinedexperienceoftheLions’return-ingleaderswillhavetheirhandsfullinleadingtheLions’17underclassmen.Inthatgroupin-cludes10freshmenwhowillhaveachancetomakeaninstantimpactfortheLions.

LeadingthatgroupisredshirtfreshmanAndyStevens ingoal.Hewillhave toughshoes tofillinreplacingthethree-timeAll-AmericanEl-liott.However,LoughranbelievesthatStevenswillbeuptothetask.

“Andyhasgainedvaluableplayingexperienceinternationallyasamemberofthejuniorna-tionalteam,”saidLoughran.StevensplayedintheworldchampionshipsinAugustoftheU.S.JuniorNationalTeam.“Hisexperienceatthatlevelwillreallyhelphimstep-inasourleaderdefensively.”

Along with Fair, sophomore Brian Benedettiand redshirt freshman Andrew Aki will alsohaveincreasedrolesintheirsecondseasonofaction.

playakeyroleatutilityandtwo-meter,”saidLoughran.“Fairisagoodshooterwhoearnedmoreplayingtimeattheendoflastseason.Hehasgottenstrongeraswell.Akiisaleftythatshowedsoliddevelopmentthissummerandgoodalsoplaybigminutesoffthebenchforus.”

TheotherredshirtfreshmenandsophomoresfortheLionsin-cludeBrianBenedetti,PhillipDiGiacomo,AndrewMacDonell,DerekMilliganandZachMix.

Agroupofninenewcomerswillalsohavetheopportunitytoearnplayingtimerightaway.LeadingthegroupisDanSmithandTiborForai.

“Smith isabigbodywhoasautilitycouldgetsomeplayingtimeinhisfirstseason,”saidLoughran.“Tiborwillbeaplay-makerforus.Heisaverygoodoffensiveplayerwhoalsoshowssoliddefensiveskills.”

TheotherfreshmenincludeCoryBaccus,CharlieHorton,PeterPhelps,AlbertSamuels,MaxSchlegelandRyanVick.

Bacccus was a two-time All-American for Whittier and alsoplayed for theFoothillWaterPoloClub.Hehelped the teamto its third straight Rio League Championship while being atwo-timePlayeroftheYearintheleague.HegraduatesastheCardinal’s all-time leader in goalswithmore than300 in hisfouryearsatthehighschool.

AlsoearningAll-AmericahonorsinhighschoolwereVick,Fo-rai, Samuel and Smith. Vick was a N.A.G. All-American anda Junior Olympic (JO) All-American at Thousand Oaks, whileForaiearnedfirst-teamJOAll-AmericahonorswhileplayingfortheSerbianJuniorNationalTeam.VickplayedforWaveWPC’sclubteam.

Samuel was a four-time letterwinner in both swimming andwaterpolo,earningthreeAll-CIFhonorsandAll-Americahon-orsasasenior.Hewasalsoatwo-timefirst-teamAll-CenturyLeagueselection.AteammateofVick,Smithwasatwo-timeNationalAgeGroupAll-AmericanwhilealsobeingaNationalCadetandYouthTeamMemberonWaveFPC.

JorycomestoLMUasatwo-timeScholar-Athleteandledhisclubteam,EastBayWPC,ingoalsandassistsinthe2006JuniorOlympics.AsforPhelps,heplayedforBreakersWPCandhelpedhisteamtothe2006SOPACZoneYouthChampionship.

RoundingoutthenewestLionsisSchlegelandHorton.Schlegelwasafour-timeAll-EasternLeagueselectionaswellasbecom-ingaNationalCadetandYouthTeammember.Hewasamem-beroftheNationalAgeGroupAll-TournamentTeamin2006whileplayingforNavyWPC.Hortonwasatwo-timefirst-teamAll-State selection in Washington while playing for the four-timestatechampionsatMercerIslandHighSchool.Heledtheteamingoals,assistsandsteals.

“Ourteamwillhavetolearnquickastheirwillnotbetimefortransition.Ourconference(WWPA)hasreallyimprovedandtheparityhasspread,”saidLoughran.

Inthelastsevenseasons,ithasbeeneitherLMUorrivalUCSanDiegowinningtheWWPA.IntheWWPAtheLionshavebeenpickedbythecoachestofinishsecondbehinddefendingcham-pionUCSanDiego.LMUandUCSanDiegohaveplayedeach

otherinthechampionshipgameofthean-nualWWPAtournamentsixoftheprevioussevenseasonsandtheyhavebeenpickedtobethereagain.

UCSDreceived125totalpointswithsixfirstplacevoteswhileLMUhad121totalpointswiththreefirstplacevotes.UCSDdefeatedLMU10-9inthechampionshipgameofthe2006WesternWaterPoloChampionshipatPomona.

“WhiletheconferencehasbeenwonbyusorUCSDthe lastsevenyears, theopportu-nityisthereforotherstoriseandchallenge

for the title,” said Loughran. “The WWPAshouldbereallyfuntowatchthisseason.”

LMUwillstartyetanothercampaignrankedin theMen’sNationalTop-20Coaches’Pollas theywerepicked10th in thepreseasonrankings.TheLionshavebeeninthetop-20everyweeksincethe2001season.LMU,whohavewonfourofthelastsixWesternWaterPoloAssociationchampionships,earned55points to sit 10th, one point behind ninthplaceLongBeachState.TheLionsareoneofseventeamsfromtheWWPArankedinthetop-20withaneighthreceivingvotes.

They are picked amongtheleadersonceagainasUCSD is ranked eighth.Also from the WWPA isUCDavisatatiefor11thwithNavy,SantaClaraat16th, Air Force at 17th,Pomona-Pitzer at 19thand UC Santa Cruz at20th. Redlands earnedvotesintheannualpoll.

2006-07.Loughran has led the Lions to 10

straightwinningseasonsandhasguidedthe program to four conference titlesand fourNCAAappearances in the lastsixseasons.

In 2001, they won their first-everWWPA championship, going 15-14overall,andearningabidtotheNCAAChampionship. Two years later the Li-onsfinished17-14and returned to the

NCAAChampionshipwiththeirsecondWWPAtitleinhand.BothteamsfinishedthirdintheNCAAtournament.In2004hehadhisfirstrepeatinmen’swaterpolowitha21-11markandanother thirdplacefinishat theNCAAs. In2005,LMUmen’swaterpolobecame justthefourthprograminschoolhistorytowinthreestraightconferencecrowns,defeatingUCSanDiegointheWWPAfinalattheBurnsAquaticsCenter.

Addingtohisimpressiveresume,LoughranhaswonsevenWWPA Coach of the Year honors, four in women’s waterpolo(2001,2002,2003,2004)andthreeinmen’swaterpolo(2001,2003,2005).

Hehaspostedanoverallrecordof171-134(.561)forthemen’steam,rankinghimastheprogram’sall-timewinningestcoach.Hehasalsoearnedarecordof223-88(.717)withthewomen’s water polo program, leading them to six WWPAchampionshipsandsixappearancestotheNCAAs,includingthelongestrunofconsecutivetitlesinschoolhistorywithfiveinarowfrom2001-2005.

Marymount water polo Head Coach JohnLoughran announced the hiring of KyleWittasassistantmen’scoach in2007.WittgraduatedLMUin2002andwasafour-timeall-conferenceperformerforLoughranfrom1998-2001.

Witt joins the LMU coach-ing staff after serving as thehead coach at Gannon Uni-versityinErie,Penn.Hespenttwo seasons at the helm ofthe men’s program at Gan-non while serving as coachof the women’s program forone season. Witt went 17-27 in two seasons with themen(9-13 in2005and8-14in 2006) and went 11-11 inoneseasonwiththewomen.Wittalsocoachedasanassis-tantatWhittier (Calif.)College,helpingtheschoolposta23-10record,culminatingwiththeschool’sfirstSouthernCaliforniaIntercol-legiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Champi-onshipin2004.

notLMU’soncampuscommonsarea,theLair,UniversityHallor theLMUbookstore. It is theLMUAthleticsTrainingRoom.

Right around 1,000-square feet, the LMUtrainingroomatanygivenmoment inseasoniswhatHeadAthleticsTrainerKeithEllisoncalls“organizedandcontrolledchaos.”Intheheightofitsbusiesttimeoftheyear,whenall18LMUNCAADivisionIsportsareinaction,theTrain-ingRoomcanmakeacasualonlookerdizzy.

However, Ellison, his three full-time assis-tants, Joe Gonzalez, Beth Drayer, Gary Dyogiand15studentassistantsmakeitlookeasy.

In his 16th-year at LMU and 10th as theHeadAthleticsTrainer,EllisonandhisstaffhaveturnedtheLMUtrainingroomintoamodelfortheschool’smainconferenceaffiliate,theWestCoastConference.

“This isagreatplace tobebecauseof thepeople,”saidEllison,whograduatedfromLMUin1987.“Thefulltimestaffwehavehereisthebestintheconference.Wehavetherightper-sonalities forLMUand theyallgenuinelycareandareconcernedaboutthestudent-athletes,not just for their injuriesandsports theyplay,butforeachpersonasawhole.

“Anditisnotjustmystaff.Itisthestudentsthatmakethisplacegreat.Thestudent-athletescareandrespectwhatwearedoing.With18sportsandjustthreetrainers,itcangetdifficultinseeingtoeveryneedoftheathletes.Butthestudents understand and respect each otherandmakethisplacevery,verysuccessfulnowandinthefuture.”

Onagivenday,theAthleticsTrainingRoomwillseeabouthalfofthe325student-athletesatLMU.Agivendaywillincludelotsofpaper-work, therapy for student-athletes recoveringfrom injuries that keep them out of competi-tion,appointmentswithdoctorsandpre-andpost-practiceneeds.

“Ourmission is toeliminatethechanceforinjury.Westresstheuseoficeandstrengthandconditioningtoreducetheriskofinjury.Thus,the traffic in our training room can get veryheavy throughout the day,” said Ellison, whohas been busy this year. “We have had a lotofdifferentinjurieswithmanydifferentteams.Becauseofthatwehavehadalotoftrafficinour training roomdoing rehabanddoing thenormalstufftoprepareforpracticeorgames.”

Inadditiontoprovidingthebestcareavail-ableinthenationtoLMUathletes,thetrainingprogramservicestheneedsofitsopponentsinafirstclassmannerandprovidesanopportunityfor students in thefieldofathletic training toearnvaluableexperience.

With more than 50 years of experience inthe field, the Training Program provides ser-vices that includes a philosophy that places ahighvalueonhealthandwellness,aprogramthat allows injured student-athletes to returntotheirsportassoonasmedicallysafeandtosubstantiallyreducetheriskofathleticinjuryforthosestudent-athletes.

ThestrengthandconditioningprogramatLoyolaMarymountUniversityhasbecomeover the years an essential component

of the Athletic department’s quest for BuildingChampions. The program is constantly lookingonaddingdifferenttrainingmechanismsforthebenefitofour student/athletesunder theguid-anceofStrengthandConditioningCoordinator,SergiuBoericaandhisassistant,CiaraCarl.

Inthepastthreeyears,theStrengthandCon-ditioning program has tried to implement theFrappierAccelerationSpeedTraining(FAST)basedonapartnershipthathasbeenestablishedwithAthleticRepublicCorporationwhichitisrunningthisspeedtrainingsystem.TheFASTspeedtrain-ing protocols has been established through re-searchanddevelopmentbyJohnFrappier,MSinExercisePhysiologyandKinesiologyandhisteamof researchers, starting 1986. John Frappier’sscientificallydesignedProgramshavetwogoals:tomaketheathleteasefficientaspossibleandtofindabalancebetweendifferentmuscles. Inordertoincreasespeed,therearetwoelementswhichcanhelpdothat:stridelengthandstridefrequency.“Thelongerthestrideandthemorefrequentlyitoccurs,themoregroundyou’llcoverinashorterperiodoftime.”statesFrappier.

TheFASTProgramsarecomplexandsystem-atic. They bring together the key componentsof improved speed, agility and overall athleticperformance. Through out the training period,specificattentionisgivento:

allofwhichhavethespecificpurposeofimprov-ingeveryathlete’sperformance.

AccordingtoJohnFrappier,morethan2,000professional athletes from NFL, MLB, NBA andNHL have participated in the program. Someoftheprofessionalathleteswhousethesystemregularly are: Garrett Lowney (2000 and 2004Olympic Wrestler), Heather Mitts (ProfessionalSoccer Player), Jason Kreis (Professional SoccerPlayer), Dan O’Brien (Olympic Decathalon Ath-lete),CrisCarter (All-ProWideReceiver),PascalDupuis (Minnesota Wild), Jim Kleinsasser (Min-nesota Vikings Fullback), Shaun Alexander (Se-attleSeahawks),RickHelling(BaltimoreOrioles),Darin Erstad (Anaheim Angels) and Brett Hull(DetroitRedWings).

ThetoolsusedtoimplementtheFASTproto-cols for our student/athletes are: 2 GenerationII Super Treadmill (29+ mph, 40% grade), 4specially designed hardwood plyometric floors,and weight machines designed to target themusclesofthehipgirdle,trunk,andlegs(2HipMachines,2ImplosionMachinesand2PlyoPressMachine).

The athletic facilities at Loyola Mary-mount University have seen a littleofeverythinginthealmost70years

while in its current Westchester location.Fromthe1984OlympicgamestoLMUbas-ketball to theWorldCupandeverything inbetween,theLMUathleticfacilitieshavebe-comehometothebest.

The complex continues to grow and im-prove with each year. The facilities includeAlbertGersten Pavilion,GeorgePageStadi-um,SullivanField,theBurnsRecreationandAquatics Center, the Jane Bove Boathouse,SmithField,theLMUTennisComplex,whichincludes the George P. Kading and MorrisA. Pivaroff Tournament Court completed in2004,and theThomasHigginsShortGameCenter, a practice facility for the golf pro-gram.Also completed in2004was the ad-dition of Pride Park, the new entrance tobaseball’sPageStadium

Thenewest facility for the Lions is SmithFiled, complete with inset dugout, state-of-the-artscoreboard,naturalgrassseatingformorethan500andbattingcages.Completedatthesametimewastheshortgamecenter,apitchandputtpractice facilitybehind thecenterfieldfenceofSmithField.Itincludesapairofbunkersandplentyofspaceforput-tingatdifferentangles.

TheexistingcenterpiecetotheLMUathlet-icsfacilities isAlbertGerstenPavilion,enter-ingits27thyearasthehometoLMU’sindoorathleticevents.

Hosting men’s and women’s basketballandvolleyball,thePavilionhasseenitsshare

of memorable moments. One came as themen’s basketball team posted a 16-gamewinning streak that spanned three seasonsfromFeb.25,1987throughNov.28,1988.OnFeb.20,1988,duringthewinningstreak,Gersten set the attendance record with astandingroomonlycrowdof4,525ina142-127winoverrivalPepperdine.

Built to accommodate the1984SummerOlympicGames inLosAngeles, thePavilionserved as thehost site for theweightliftingcompetition.ItisnamedinhonorofAlbertGersten,fatherofAlbertGersten,Jr.,a1974LMUgraduate.

Now in its 25th season as the home ofLion baseball, George C. Page Stadium hasestablisheditselfasoneofcollegebaseball’smostuniqueballparks.TheparkcontinuestodistinguishitselfthankstotherecentadditionofPridePark.However,thebiggestenhance-ment came in 2001 with the Mikos BlueMonster,anewwallinleftfieldthatcontainsamanual scoreboard, completewithoutoftownscoresreminiscenttosomeofthema-jor league’sclassicparks.ThewallwasbuiltthankstoagiftfromPaulMikos.

TheBurnsRecreationandAquaticsCenteropenedinthefallof2000andhasbecomethehomeofsomeofthebestwaterpolointheNCAA.TheOlympic sizepool ispartofthe$18-millionBurnsRecCenter,andservesas thehomevenue formen’s andwomen’swaterpolo andwomen’s swimming. of2002andagainin2006.Throughoutthelastdecade,SullivanField

hasbeenhosttosomeofthebestinsoccerfrom around the world. With the develop-mentofthesoccerprogramatLMU,SullivanFieldhasbecomeoneofthetopfacilities inthe soccer-richWCC.Sweden, Italy andAr-gentina used Sullivan during the 1994 FIFAWorldCup,andfouryearslater,thefieldwasusedasapracticesitefortheWorldCupex-hibitionGoldCupTournament.

TheLMUTennisCentergrewtosixcourtsin2004withtheKadingandPivaroffTourna-mentCourt,thecenterpieceofthefacility.AnewDaktronicsscoreboardwasaddedtothefacilityin2006.

Completed in 2002, Jane Browne BoveBoathouse is the only athletics facility notonthegroundsoftheWestchestercampus.The facility includes two boat bays, a workarea, anoffice, anewdock and restrooms.TheboathouseispartofbeautifulMarinadelRey,Calif.Conditionsaregenerallyideal.Thewater is protected within the marina, tem-peratures are nice throughout the year andboattrafficislow.

AquaticsCenterhasseen10championships,127 wins and has been host to two NCAAchampionshipsinjustsevenseasons.

Showing that it isoneof thefinest facilitiesinthecountry,LMUhostedtheNCAAMen’sWaterPoloChampionshiponDecember7-8,2002andagainonDec.2-3,2006.

TheLionshavethrivedinthestate-of-the-artfacility,earningarecordof109-30infivesea-sons.Themen’steamwent7-3in2006andhavecompiledarecordof55-23 (.706)dur-ing its stayat theCenter.Of themen’s fourWWPA titles in the last six years, two havecomeattheBurnsCenter.LMUwonitsfirstconferencecrownwhenthetournamentwashostedbytheLionsin2001andthenagainayearagoin2005.

Asforthewomen’steam,theywontheirfirst21gamesat theBurnsAquaticsCenterandhave posted a 72-11 record (.867) in fourseasons,going11-1in2007,postingan11-gamewinstreakheadinginto2008.Overall,the two teams have combined for 10 con-ferencetitleswitha recordof127-34 (.789)whilethefacilityhasbeencalledhome.

TheBurnsCenterishometotheoncampusrecreation center, which sees thousands ofcommunity members, students, faculty andstaffthroughitsdoorseachday.IncludedwiththefacilitywastheOlympicsizepool that ispartofthe$20-millionBurnsRecCenterandservesasthehomevenueformen’sandwom-en’swaterpoloaswellasLMUswimmeets.

One of the premier aquatics facilities in

SouthernCalifornia,theBurnsrecreationcen-terpool isheatedandfeaturesanadvanceddeck-level drainage system. There are sepa-ratelockerroomsforhomeandvisitingteamsaswellasofficespaceandmeetingroomsfortheLMUaquatics’coachingstaff.Adjacenttothepoolispermanentbleacherseatingwithanormalcapacityfor800fans.

Addedtothefacility inthefallof2001wasastate-of-the-artscoreboard.ThescoreboardfromColoradoTimingSystemsfeaturesscor-ing systems for both water polo and swim-ming, including the touch-pad timing foreightswimlanes.Thefullydigitalsystemin-cludesmatrixandvideocapabilitiesandwasinstalled thanks to the donations of AlbertGersten.Inaddition,anewaudiosystemwasinstalledpriortothestartofthe2002waterpoloseason.

ORiGiN OF THE LiONAlthough itsorigin is somewhat clouded,

theLionmascothasbeensynonymouswithLoyolaMarymountUniversity formore than70years.AccordingtotheOct.5,1923edi-tionoftheschoolnewspaper,theLosAngelesLoyolan, the Lionmascotwas suggestedbyanenthusiasticfanafter1919whenSt.Vin-cent’sCollegebecameLoyolaCollege.NotingtheLoyolafootballplayer’sfiercecompetitive-ness,thatunknownfandescribedtheLoyolaplayersasLions.ThenamedidnotgeneratetoomuchpopularityandtheLoyolaathleticnicknameremained“Loyolan’s”until1923.

At that time, thearticleexplains, thecol-legewishedtoinspirenewprideinitsathletesandfans.Notingthesuccessofnicknamesforothercolleges,thecollegeoptedtogivetheLion’snicknamearebirth.

Calling the old Lion mascot “mistreatedandforgotten,”thearticleexplains that theLionwouldofficiallyfinditswayintoallcol-legesongsandcheers.TheLionhasremainedfirmlyentrenched in Loyola lore to this veryday.

Analternativeoriginstorytracesthenick-nameto theabundanceofactualmountainlionswhichroamedWestchesterwhenLoyolaCollege moved here in 1927. The area re-mainedwidelyunpopulatedandteemedwithwildlife when the school moved atop thebluffs.Schoolofficialsreportedlyadoptedthenicknamebecausemountain lions inhabitedtheareawhengroundwasbroken.

atanyLMUathleticevent,theLMUPepBandbroke onto the scene late in the 2001-02season. Bringing energy and atmosphere toathleticsevents,thePepBandisthelatestad-ditiontomakingLMUthebestplacetoplayandwatch.Makingupthe35-memberband,withmoremembersontheway,areLMUstu-dentsfromallbackgrounds.Thebandisinitssixthyear.

inCumberland,Maryland,andenteredtheSocietyofJesusinJuly1965.Possessingawealthofexperienceinbothuniversityteachingandad-

ministration,Fr.LawtoncomestoLMUaftergiving20yearsofservicetoGeorgetownUniversity.ServingastheassistantDeanfrom1984-89,Fr.Lawtonalso taught in theTheologydepartmentasanadjunctassistantprofessorduringthatperiod.HestartedattheUniversityin1977asanassistantprofessorofTheologyandworkedinthatcapacityuntil1979.

HeearnedhisbachelorofartsdegreeinclassicsfromFordhamUniver-sity in1971,graduatingPhiBetaKappa(summacumlaude).Fr.LawtonwentontoattendHarvardUniversitywherehecompletedhisdoctorateinNearEasternLanguagesandCivilizationsin1977.Fr.LawtonwasaDan-forthandWoodrowWilsonFellowatHarvard.Hewasordainedin1981.

Followinghispreparationforordinationfrom1979-81,Fr.Lawtontrav-eledtoGermanytoconductindependentstudyinbothGermanandthe-ology.In1982,heacceptedanassistantprofessorshipteachingHebrewandAramaicatthePontificalBiblicalInstituteinRome,Italy,aposthehelduntil1984.

Inaddition tohis teachingandadministrativeduties atGeorgetown,Fr.Lawtonservedonnumerouscampuscommitteesexaminingsuchareasas campusplanning, student life, freshmanand transfer studentadmis-sions,andcommunityrelations.OutsideoftheUniversityhehasservedasamemberoftheBoardofTrusteesoftheUniversityofScrantonandFairfieldUniversity.

Father Lawton holds the rank of professor in LMU’s Departments ofTheologicalStudiesandClassics.

Dr.WilliamS.Husakbeginshis10thyearastheAthleticsDi-rector at Loyola Marymount

University.Sincetakingoverthepro-gram in 1998, LMU has reached anewlevelofsuccess.WhiletheLions’successhasbeensomeofthebestinprogramhistory,Husakfirmlybelievestheprogramhas“justscratchedthesurface.”

His administrative efforts havefocused on developing a team ofcoaches, support staff and adminis-tratorswhobelievethatLMU’sathlet-icsprogramcanbeamong theeliteinthenation.Thisperiodoftimehasbeenmarkedbyenhancingthesup-portoftheathleticteamsthroughthenewandupdatedfacilities,increasedscholarship and operational support and enhancing the coaching andsupportstaff.

Thepast10yearshavebeensomeofthemostsuccessfulseasonsinschoolhistoryastheLionswonover56percentofitsdualcompetitionsinthatspanandclaimedtheschool’sfirsteverCommissioner’sCup in1996.Since1998,LMUhasclaimed22conferencechampionshipsand29NCAApostseasonappearances.Offthefield,theLionshavehada50percentincreaseinnationalscholar-athletesas155claimedthehonorinthe2006-07academicyear.

Husak attributes the current success and the future growth of theprogramtothestaffthatisinplace.Sincehetookovertheprogram,thecoachingandadministrativestaffs that lendsupport to themore than400 student-athletes has more than doubled in size. A full-time headcoachwilllead19ofthevarsitysportssponsoredatLMU.WhenHusaktookover,onlynineoftheprogramswereledbyfull-timecoaches.

Inaddition,supportforthestudent-athleteswasenhancedwiththeadditionofeightbrandnewstaffpositions,whichincludedanathleticacademic coordinator, marketing/promotions manager, corporate rela-tionsmanager,twoassistantathletictrainers,astrengthandcondition-ingassistantcoachandanassistantmediarelationsdirector.

ThefinalmajorpiecetoLMUAthletics’growthandsuccesshasbeenHusak’s commitment to facilities. Sincehehas takenover,$25millionhasbeenput intoathleticfacilities.That list includestheBurnsAquat-icsCenter,whichwasusedashosttothe2002and2006NCAAMen’sWaterPoloChampionships.IthasbeentheonlytimeLMUhashostedanNCAAchampionship.

FacilityenhancementshavealsoincludedthebrandnewSmithField(softball),ThomasHigginsShortGameCenter(golf),theMorrisA.PivaroffandGeorgeP.KadingTournamentCourt(tennis),andtheJaneBrowneBove Boathouse. LMU’s existing facilties have also seen their share ofgrowth, includingnewbleachersandscoreboardtoSullivanField(soc-cer),MikosBlueMonsterandPrideParktoPageStadium(baseball),andanewsoundsystem,floordesignandbleachersinGerstenPavilion.

Husakcomes froma longandaccomplishedbackgroundasanad-ministrator,fundraiserandprofessorduringa19-yearcareeratCaliforniaStateUniversity,LongBeach.Between1993-1998,heservedastheSe-niorAssociateAthleticsDirectorandwasmainlyresponsibleforAthleticsfundraising. While at CSULB between 1983 and 1997, Husak servedas an assistant commissioner for theCaliforniaCollegiateAthleticAs-sociation (CCAA). Between1986and1993heservedaschairmanofCSULB’s physical education department. As an associate professor ofphysical education atCSULBbetween1979 and1986, he establishedtheuniversity’sMotorBehaviorLaboratory.

A1972graduateofStateUniversityofNewYork(SUNY)atCortland,Husakholdsamaster’sdegreeandPh.D.inPhysicalEducationfromTexasA&MUniversity.Heandhiswifeof36years,Tish,liveinLongBeachandhavethreesons,Greg,ToddandJon.

2004 • 21-11In a season that was supposed to be a rebuildingtype year, the Loyola Marymount University men’swater polo team proved everyone wrong as theyworked themselves to a second straight WesternWaterPoloAssociationchampionshipin2004witha21-11finalrecord.TheLions,comingonewinshyoftyingtheprogramrecordinwins,tookthirdinthe2004NCAAMen’sWaterPoloChampionshipswitha 6-5 win over Princeton. The one-goal win overPrincetonwaspartofathemefortheLionsin2004astheymadeahabitofpullingouttheclosewins.

LMUwent12-4ontheseasoningamesdecidedbytwogoalsorless.InthestretchtheLionswent3-0in overtime games, winning all three by one goal.TheydefeatingNo.7LongBeachState,8-7,No.17Whittier,12-11,andNo.13UCDavis,7-6.ThewinsoverWhittierandUCDavishelpedtheLionsadvancetotheWWPAtitlegame.

LMU went 18-13 on the year, their ninthstraight winning season. The Lions featuredoneofthenation’stopdefenseswhilesport-ingabalancedoffensiveattack.SeniorBrian mcshane led a four-senior attack with 343goals.SeniorBen eastonhadhisbestscor-ing seasonofhis career, ranking second forthe Lions with 37 goals. Fellow senior cut-berto Hernandez was third with 34 whilematt reynoldswasfourthwith33.TheLi-onsdefenseallowedjust7.71goalspergamein2006asgoalieIanElliottwasrankedfirstinsavesontheyear.

ThebackboneoftheLionsdefenseforthelastfouryearshasbeenElliott. InhisfourthandfinalseasonofcollegiatewaterpoloatLMU,Elliottwasafour-timefirst-teamAll-WWPAse-lection.In31gamesthisseasonhemade323saves,givinghimanaverageof10-7savespergame.Hewastopsinthenationinsaves.Thisseasonhehashaddouble-digitsavesin16oftheLions’31gamesthisseason.Inhiscareerhe has made 1146 saves to set the all-timeschoolmark.Hiscareergoalsagainstaverageis7.0.In2005hefinishedtheregularseasonamong the top-five nationally in saves with304whileallowingjust6.64goalspergame.

Heplayedineverygameandappearedinnetfor135oftheLions’140quarters.Withhis34goals this season,McShanefin-ished110goalsinhiscareeratLMU,rankinghim15thinLMUhistory.AlsointherankingsisHernandezwith 87 assists, sitting3rd all-time.Elliottwith128gamesplayedandMattReynoldswith124areranked1stand3rdall-time.ElliottandReynoldsare5thand6thinstealswith121and111,respectively.

The year brought more All-America honorsto LMUasElliott andBrianMcShaneendedtheircareersatLMUwithhighhonorsastheAssociationofCollegiateWaterPoloCoaches(ACWPC)namedthemtothe2006All-Ameri-can teams. Elliott earned third team honorswhile McShane took home honorable men-tionhonors.ItisarepeatappearanceforbothElliottandMcShaneastheyearnedhonorablementionAll-Americanhonorsayearago.El-liottandMcShanewereapartofacombinedfiveWesternWaterPoloAssociationchampi-onships and five trips to the NCAA tourna-mentintheircareersatLMU.

Inaddition,ElliottandMcShanewerenamedFirst-TeamAll-WWPAwhileReynolds earnedsecond-team honors and Hernandez earnedhonorablementionhonors.ForElliott,itwashisfourthstraightfirst-teamAll-WWPAhonor,makinghimoneofjustfourstudent-athletesinLMUhistorytoachievethehonor.

The Western Water Polo Association an-nounced the 2006 Men’s Water Polo and2007 Women’s Water Polo All-AcademicTeams. The team consists of members who

wereoneof the top-10 student-athletes ontherespectiveinstitutions’team,carrieda3.0cumulativeGPA (ona4.0 scale), classifiedafull-timestudentwhohascompletedamini-mumofonesemesterortwoquartersathisinstitution.TherewereeightmembersoftheLoyolaMarymountmen’sandwomen’swaterpoloteamsonthisyear’sAll-Academicsquad.Onthemen’sside,juniorshaun flood,soph-omore tim Heafner and Julien LormantwerenamedtotheMen’sAll-Academicteam.All three will be the leaders of the Lions’squadheadingintothe2007season.HeafnerisaBusinessAdministrationmajorwitha3.68GPAwhileFloodandLormanteachhave3.03GPAs.FloodisaBiologymajorwithLormantistheTelevisionProductionprogram.

Loyola Marymount’s John Prunckle andHeafner were named by the Association ofCollegiate Water Polo Coaches Associationto the 2006 All-American Academic Team.The ACWPC honors student-athletes whodemonstratedexcellenceintheclassroomaswellasinthepool. Inhissecondfullseasonofwater polo at LMU,Heafner finished the2006seasonplayingineverygameafterplay-inginjustninetheyearbeforeasatruefresh-man.HebecameaclutchplayerfortheLions,scoring 11 goals as one of the first playersofthebench.Headded18steals,11assistsand 17 kickouts drawn. Heafner is a Busi-nessAdministrationmajorwitha3.68gradepointsaverageandearnedSuperiorAcademicAll-AmericahonorsbytheAWPCA.PrunckleearnedExcellenthonorswitha3.33GPAasaMechanicalEngineeringmajor.HefinishedhisthirdseasonwiththeLions,holdingan8.0goalsagainstaverageasagoalie.

Ultimate Net-MinderIan Elliott was just the fourth player in LMU history to earn first team all-conference honors all four years as a Lion. He did it while leading LMU to a No.8 rnaking in 2006.
