ANNUAL REPORT

Page 2: 2011 Page Education Foundation Annual Report

Our MissionA young person’s lifelong success begins with an education. Access to higher education promises far-reaching benefits, especially to students of color who often face daunting challenges in completing a post-secondary education. Guided by our mission to encourage Minnesota’s youth of color to pursue post-secondary education, the Page Education Foundation promotes their academic achievement, personal responsibility and untapped potential to become vital contributors to their communities. We accomplish this by granting financial assistance to post-secondary students. In return, these students actively foster positive attitudes toward literacy and learning among younger, school-age children of color through mentoring relationships.

In preparing our 2010-2011 Annual Report, we wanted to take the opportunity to reflect on

our accomplishments. For twenty-four years, we have encouraged Minnesota’s students of

color to invest in their future by pursuing post-secondary education. As a result of the Page

Education Foundation’s support, more than 5,000 students have attended more than 100

post-secondary institutions across the state of Minnesota. At the same time, those students

have positively influenced the lives of thousands of younger children through mentoring and

tutoring.

In this Annual Report, you will meet seven Page Scholars. While they are all in different

stages of their education and careers, they share one common theme: they utilize education

as a tool to leverage their potential and expand their future. They are individuals of character

and commitment, and they embody the spirit of the Page Education Foundation.

We are grateful to Page Scholars – for sharing their educational journey with us and inspiring

young people of the next generation to confidently pursue their dreams. Our gratitude also

extends to our community –our donors, volunteers, and friends who generously give their

resources, time, and energy to ensure all students of color in Minnesota have the opportunity

to hope and dream.

Thank you for your continued support of the Page Education Foundation. Your generosity and

encouragement contribute to a more meaningful, equitable future for Minnesota’s children.

We humbly thank you for the opportunity to continue our work and further our mission.

With gratitude,

Diane Sims Page

Executive Director

DEAR FRIENDS,

“ Alan Page spent fifteen years in the NFL, becoming the first defensive player in the league’s history to receive an MVP award. While playing football, he became a full-time law student, earning his Juris Doctor in 1978. Alan’s deep and abiding belief in the importance of education did not stop with his own success.

Recognizing a need for our education system to reach more young people of color, he used his 1988 induction into the NFL Hall of Fame to launch the Page Education Foundation. From its inception, the Foundation has offered financial assistance and encouragement to students of color facing tremendous barriers to attaining their educational dreams.

In the last twenty-four years, the Page Education Foundation has supported more than 5,000 students in their pursuit of post-secondary education in Minnesota.

OUR HISTORY

Our intent in establishing the Foundation was to try to create hope, to let young people know that their future could be better than their present. I see a lot of young people who engage in anti-social behavior. Some of those young people simply have no moral compass. But for many of them, indeed, I suspect, the majority, there is a lack of hope. And so, to the extent that the Page Education Foundation and Page Scholars create hope, we make the world a better place not only for ourselves, but also for those around us.

Alan Page

PAGE GRANTSThe Page Education Foundation awards annual, renewable financial grants to Minnesota students of color who attend colleges, universities, and technical schools throughout Minnesota. Students who accept grants commit to perform clearly defined service projects with younger children of color. Our awards consist of annual grants of $1,000 - $2,500. The selection process focuses on an applicant’s attitude toward education, willingness to provide service to children, and financial need. Recipients reapply each year they attend a post-secondary educational institution.

PAGE CONNECTIONSThe goal of Page Connections is to support Page Scholars as they work to successfully complete their education and community service. Page Connections provides Page Scholars with access to support services on campus, internship/career opportunities, group service projects, and professional mentors to help guide students in the transition into the workforce.

SERVICE TO CHILDRENThe Service-to-Children program requires each Page Scholar to volunteer a minimum of 50 hours during the academic year mentoring kindergarten through 8th grade children of color. With a focus on literacy and tutoring, Page Scholars encourage younger children to view education as a positive and exciting goal. These relationships offer powerful motivation to impressionable students who look up to Page Scholars for guidance. Children mentored by Page Scholars benefit from real-life role models who are taking advantage of their educational opportunities and creating a better future. Page Scholars also provide much needed assistance to our schools, libraries, and community organizations.

FEATURED PAGE SCHOLAR

Celia Hernandez-Payan Celia learned at an early age to translate her life’s experiences into clear career goals. Majoring in Social Work and Cross Cultural Studies at Augsburg College, Celia plans to complete her MSW and focus on issues in Latin America. Given her family’s story of immigration, she brings unique personal insight into her studies and into the work she is currently doing with students at the Center for Democracy and Citizenship through the Public Achievement program. It’s Celia’s story of resilience that inspires her students and connects her with the community as a leader forging real change.

SCHOLARS

Early on, I learned to advocate for myself. Many of the kids I work with are first-generation immigrant students who have been through the same experiences. It’s really cool to get them thinking about the future and their potential accomplishments.“

FEATURED MENTOR RELATIONSHIP

Malik Watkins + William Gbolo

The most effective leaders lead by example. Malik Watkins, a former Page Scholar and Travelers employee, is a powerful mentor to William Gbolo, who has chosen a similar path in finance. Working in Bonds and Financial Products, Malik shares his journey dealing with the day-to-day pressures, challenges, and rewards of his career. William, an accounting student at Hamline University, and Malik find that sharing their interests and experiences strengthens their commitment to each other’s success while inspiring their own work with younger African American men. A mentor himself, William volunteers with McVay Youth Partnership. 11

Artika Tyner

“I chose a career in law because I believe law is a language of power and provides a chance to impact the community. I saw it as a way to give back,” says Artika Tyner, who earned her B.A. from Hamline and a law degree and Masters in Public Policy from St. Thomas, and who has just completed her PhD dissertation. Its topic is one Atika can speak to with personal as well as professional insight for it ocuses on legal professionals applying their expertise to promote social change. As a mentor, Artika is a shining example of what hard work and a good education can do, Artika is energized by her work with younger students. “I see mentoring as an opportunity to pay it forward because I was a first-generation college student and law student,” she says.

Armando Camacho

Currently President of the Neighborhood House, an organization that serves more than 14,000 low-income residents and immigrants in Ramsey and Dakota county, Armando’s rise to prominence is impressive. His personal story is one of heartbreak and survival. He immigrated with his family from Puerto Rico at age six. As an adolescent, he was often homeless and sought shelter and the Neighborhood House. Armando credits the Page Education Foundation for providing him with a good education and the tools for success. Thanks to his leadership, Neighborhood House is stronger and more vital, serving more families in need than ever before.

Receiving the scholarship inspired me to not let the Page Education Foundation down. I felt, if they were investing in me, I in turn need to invest all my energy into my education.

Sousada Chidthachak

Sousada, currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Mathematics Education at the University of Minnesota, knew early in life that education would be the key to her success as well as her life’s work. Born in Thailand to Laotian parents, Sousada credits her mother’s persistence and work ethic as the source of her own strength. She holds a B.A. and M.A. in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis on Urban Teaching from the University of St. Thomas. Sousada credits the Page Education Foundation for supporting her education as well as for leading her into the mentoring that inspires her teaching style. Much of what she has learned, through her work teaching in Thailand, researching in Brazil, and as an algebra teacher, will be brought to the page in her forthcoming memoir, The Lesson is Never Just a Number. “I hope the book will be the boost that people need to feel they can make a change.” She plans to donate proceeds from its sale to the Page Education Foundation.

Sousada Chidthachak, Math Instructional Coach at Heritage and Metro Tech17

The Page Foundation not only supported my education, they introduced mentoring into my life.

Michael Elliot

Michael Elliot applied his entrepreneurial savvy to social good. Michael currently serves as the Executive Director of Fastforward Education, an organization that facilitates mentoring and homework assistance to junior high students. He also runs the Joint City Youth Council that facilitates gatherings of students to address concerns and propose solutions. He continues to be engaged in a language interpreting company he founded during his undergraduate years at Hamline University, where he earned his B.A. Elliot credits his career in education with the support he received from the Page Education Foundation. “I had the dream of going to college, but without the initial support, it would have been really difficult,” he says.
