All preschools, which currently serve 360 students, will receive exciting, hands-on, exploratory materials that lend themselves to the discovery and investigation of STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Math) concepts and vocabulary such as incline, speed, pattern, pendulum, force and predict.

These two enriching curricula teach critical work and life-related words and skills, including functional math and pre-vocational skills, using interactive white boards, real world situations, pictures and hands-on manipulatives. Engaged students with special needs proceed at their own individual pace until skills are fully learned, and then move on to more difficult concepts.

‘Responsive Classroom’ is used in Hopkins elementary schools to enhance social language and promote a positive learning environment. This grant provides for the translation of these materials into Chinese for use at XinXing Academy, Hopkins’ Chinese immersion school. This will teach students the vocabulary they need to navigate small group interaction and problem-solving without reverting to English.

SPRING 2013 Grantsbooks on HAnd - eXpAndinG ClAssrooM librAries All Elementary Schools--Bonnie Hild

First and second grade classroom libraries will receive expanded book options to build literacy skills. Each student will have a rotating group of books that are balanced for fiction and non-fiction and skill levels.

ACAdeMiC support Center Hopkins High School—Patty Johnson

Students can receive after-school help in an academic support center staffed by teachers and peer tutors. This pilot will provide support two days a week for Math, Science and Language Arts.

MAGnifyinG tHe power of steMDistrict Wide

STEM Toolkits for all Elementary Schools: This grant extends the successful pilot program HEF funded at Glen Lake to now reach all elementary schools. With STEM Explore Toolkits, our students will invent, test, build and discover—using hands-on activities and open-ended challenges.

Rolling robotics labs provide students with tools to design and construct robots for hands-on, minds-on learning.

Hopkins high school and junior high students will have 24/7 on-line access to 900 titles of popular fiction and non-fiction e-books.

This purchase of 200 Spanish-language teen novels will build literacy and interest in reading among a variety of students. North Junior High is home to the Juntos Spanish immersion program, to English language learners with Spanish as their first language, to students with Spanish spoken at home, and to many students learning Spanish.

In this exciting partnership with Tanglen’s PTO, a total of eight iPads—four each from HEF and the PTO—will be provided to Tanglen’s ELL (English Language Learner) classroom to accelerate language learning and reach new levels of student engagement.

To enhance the Daily 5, (read to self, read to a partner, write, word work, and listening), Meadowbrook Elementary will purchase a large collection of books with audio CD’s. These, combined with 30 re-purposed iPods from NJH, will enlarge current classroom listening centers.
