Mike Rumbaugh is the second coach in the history of the Red Flash
men’s volleyball program and enters his 13th season as its head coach. A main-
stay at Saint Francis, he is the longest-tenured active coach in the Saint Francis
athletics department. Rumbaugh is also among its most accomplished; on
March 14, 2009, the Red Flash’s 3-0 victory over Mount Olive gave Rumbaugh
his 127th victory at Saint Francis, making him the winningest coach in program
history.
Rumbaugh has had the distinction of coaching some of the most deco-
rated athletes in the history of Saint Francis athletics. Only six athletes in school
history have ever earned the honor of being named an All-American; Rumbaugh
has coached two of those athletes, Marc Honore ‘07 and Jordan Varee ‘10.
Under Rumbaugh, Honore also earned Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Associ-
ation Player of the Year in 2007. On the conference level, Rumbaugh has
coached a grand total of 17 First- and Second-Team All-EIVA players in his ca-
reer, including the school’s only four-time honoree in Varee and three-time hon-
orees Honore, Shane Conley ‘09, and Nick Rivett ‘10. In addition, Rumbaugh has
coached seven Academic All-EIVA players, including two-time honorees Alex Fort-
ney ‘10, Patrick McManamon ‘10, and Travis Fox ‘07. In 2006 and 2007, Fox
was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District squads.
In 2010, four Saint Francis players were named to the All-EIVA First- and
Second-Teams. Jordan Varee represented the Red Flash on the First-Team for
his fourth career honor, while Nick Rivett earned Second-Team honors for the
third consecutive season. Two other players - Pete Freyer ‘10 and returning jun-
ior John Wappler - earned their first career spots on the All-EIVA team.
Rumbaugh has been the only coach the Red Flash have ever known in the
rally-scoring era, but some of the milestones posted under his watch put even the
records of the serve-and-volley era to shame. On April 7, 2010, Varee recorded
his 1,802nd career kill, passing Jack Zebo for most kills in the history of the
men’s volleyball program despite the fact Zebo played his entire career in the
serve-and-volley era. Record-keeping around the EIVA is inconsistent, but it is be-
lieved that Varee is the career kills leader for the EIVA. Under Rumbaugh, Shane
Conley became the program’s all-time leader in assists with 4,477, more than
anyone in either the rally scoring or the serve-and-volley eras.

Rumbaugh was named the 2006 EIVA Coach of the Year when the Red
Flash finished with a 17-10 mark. That year, the Red Flash hosted their first-
ever EIVA Tournament match, a straight-sets sweep of perennial power Juniata
for the first Red Flash playoff victory in 13 years. The momentum carried over
to their next match when the Flash stunned #12 George Mason in the semifinals.
Rumbaugh arrived in Loretto in 1998 after serving a six-year term as
an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s volleyball teams at Mercyhurst
College. Over the past five years, Rumbaugh has worked as a certified official by
the United States of America Volleyball Association. He has served as an in-
structor at USA High Performance and Regional High Performance Camps, and
coached the USA Continental Youth Team against domestic and international
opponents at the USA Select Competition.
A native of Cabot, Pa., and a 1985 graduate of Knoch High School, Rum-
baugh holds an associate degree in humanities from Butler County Community
College. Rumbaugh and his wife Cindy have two children, a son Tyler and a daugh-
ter Ashlee. They reside in nearby Cresson.

Henry Chuang enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Red Flash men’sand women’s volleyball teams, and provides years of experiences and wisdom to the men’steam. Chuang will work primarily with the Red Flash offense, but will also spend his time an-alyzing opponent’s film and identifying weaknesses.
In 2009, the Red Flash offense flourished under Chuang’s direction. Saint Francisranked fourth in the EIVA in hitting percentage and fifth in the EIVA in kills. Hitter JordanVaree led the EIVA in kills per match and setter Shane Conley ranked fifth in assists permatch. Conley also retired as Saint Francis’s all-time leader in set assists.
Chuang was born in Tapei, Taiwan but grew up in Los Gatos, Calif. Before coming toSaint Francis, Chuang spent one year as an assistant at Rutgers-Newark, where he as-sisted with both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams.
Prior to coaching at Rutgers-Newark, Chuang spent four years as the head men’s vol-leyball coach, as well as the head junior’s coach, for TV Buehl, Germany. His men’s teamthere claimed a Division 3 championship, a Relegation title, and qualified for the second na-tional division.
Chuang’s U-18 junior squads were two-time Southern Germany champions, while hisU-21 team earned a Southern Germany title to go along with a silver medal at the 2007national championships.
While serving as men’s and women’s coach for SSC Vellmar in Germany from 2001-03, Chuang helped the women’s team to a Division 3 Championship, earning them a spotin the second national division. He also served as an assistant coach at the Youth/JuniorNational Team Training Center.
Chuang entered the college coaching ranks after graduating from Bellarmine CollegePrep in San Jose, Calif., in 1994. He worked at several high schools and on juniors clubteams in northern and southern California . He played one season for the University of Cal-ifornia - Santa Cruz before transferring to Loyola-Marymount, where he received his bach-elor of arts in Psychology.

s e a s o n o u t l o o kAs he gets set to begin the 2011 men’s vol-
leyball season, Saint Francis men’s volleyballcoach Michael Rumbaugh knows that he is facingthe definition of a “transition year.” When the2010 edition stepped off the court for the lasttime, they did so as four full-time starters and onepair that split time at another starting position.
Consider further that among that groupthere were four All-EIVA selections, including theprogram’s top two leaders in kills, a player withthree consecutive seasons of 100-plus blocks, and a middle with a career hitting percentage of.417.
Now you may understand why Rumbaughknows that 2011 could be a rollercoaster sea-son.
“I think we’ll be better than many expect,”said Rumbaugh. “I think we have the talent to beable to beat the best teams in the EIVA Tait onany given night, but our youth and inexperiencecould hinder us just as much.”
oUTsIde hITTeRThe outside hitter position is perhaps the po-
sition hit hardest by graduation, as three seniors(Nick Rivett, Tyler Mattera, and Alex Fortney)started every match at one of the two outside po-sitions in 2010. In fact, Rivett was a mainstay inthe Red Flash line-up for years, earning three All-EIVA honors in his career and ranking amongSFU’s all-time leaders in kills and digs. However,Rumbaugh believes the game plan does not re-quire drastic changes.
“Losing Nick means we lost ball control andall-around court awareness, and we’ll miss hispassing and defense,” said Rumbaugh. “But of-fensively, we haven’t lost the ability to run fast orgo high. We’ll have more youthful energy and en-thusiasm on the court.”
From a veteran standpoint, Rumbaugh re-turns fifth-year senior Chad Martson, who missedthe entire 2010 season due to injury.
“Chad is coming off a shoulder injury, andhe's a year removed from action,” said Rum-baugh. “When he gets back up to speed, he'll bea big addition. He knows what I expect and howI like the offense run. As a leader, he's helping theyounger guys do what they are supposed to do.”
Kyle Beatty is another name expected tomake an impact in 2011; after using his redshirtin 2010, Beatty is ready for game action.
“Kyle knows that he needs to play a big rolethis year, and he’s mentally ready,” said Rum-baugh. “He’s got a quick jump and a high reach. With four full years of Kyle, I think he will be ableto reach a very high level of play.”
Also competing for time will be a trio offreshmen, each of whom bring “different ele-ments” to the table, according to Rumbaugh.
“Logan Patterson plays very strong at thepins, while Lucas Schulze and Lucas Behringerbring very strong ball control and stability to theoutside,” said Rumbaugh.
oPPosITeAt first glance, it would appear the hole at
the opposite position would be too big for the RedFlash to fill; graduated Jordan Varee essentiallyrewrote the record books at Saint Francis, claim-ing the all-time marks in kills and aces and earn-ing a school-record four All-EIVA distinctions. However, Rumbaugh feels that his new combi-nations on the right side will enable him to addnew wrinkles to the game plan.
The resident upperclassman is Alex Kane,a 6-9 junior that has been groomed to take overthe position.
“Kane has been biding his time, and heknows it’s now time to make that promise reality,”said Rumbaugh. “He adds a much bigger block-ing dimension because of his frame, much morethan we’ve ever had, I think.”
The challenger at the position is Colin Sher-win, a 6-3 freshman lefthander that Rumbaughsays provides another interesting offensive di-mension.
“Sherwin is a tremendous jumper, and hisleft-handedness is something that’s nice to haveon the right side,” said Rumbaugh. “It’s not some-thing I’ve had here in a while, so he can give us adifferent look at times.”
mIddLeRumbaugh lost a pair of multiple-year
starters in Pete Freyer and Patrick McMana-mon, but he feels that the returning trio of mid-dles will be able to compensate for the losses ofthe two mainstays.
“We lost a lot in Pete and Pat, no doubt,”said Rumbaugh. “But I feel that the guys thatcame back are up to the challenge.”
The three players expected to rotate thereare senior Eric Syty, junior John Skarupa, andsophomore Adam Roche. While not regularstarters in 2010, all three contributed significantplaying time and are no strangers to game ac-tion.
“Roche has been pounding the ball offen-sively, and he has the look of being a big-timethreat for us,” said Rumbaugh. “Defensively, I’dhave to say Syty and Skarupa are playing at a highlevel. Their block is big and is always ‘there,’ so it’sreal easy to play defense behind them.”
seTTeROne of two positions where the Red Flash
do return a starter, the setter spot will more thanlikely be handled by junior Ryan Williams.Williams’ play at setter in 2010 was spotty atfirst but improved as the season went on; ac-cording to Rumbaugh, Williams was feeling thejitters typical of a first-year starter on a team ofveteran seniors.
“With the team we had last year, Ryan tookon a lot of pressure to be perfect, which tooksome of his game away,” said Rumbaugh. “Thisyear, he is much more confident and relaxed, andhe has a better feel for the flow of things. I thinkit will pay off.”
Also getting work at the setter position willbe sophomore Caleb Brown and freshmanMichael Krepp, both of whom have “improved thecompetition,” according to Rumbaugh.
“Those two are doing a nice job of pushingfor the spot, and it’s keeping everyone’s efforthigh,” said Rumbaugh.
LIbeRoAnother spot where the starter returns
from 2010, the libero position features three tal-ented players battling for playing time. In 2010,John Wappler posted SFU’ssecond-highest digtotal in the rally-scoring era and was an All-EIVAselection, but Rumbaugh says that his stable ofliberos “will keep it interesting.”
“Wappler was an All-EIVA pick, and just addsto the strong play on the serve-receive,” saidRumbaugh. “But we have Markus Schulze com-ing back from an injury last season, and he hasplayed extremely well in the offseason.”
Furthermore, Rumbaugh expects con-verted setter Nick Bancroft to fight for playingtime as well.
“Bancroft’s defense is exceptional, and nowhe can focus on digging the ball as opposed toworrying about the offense. He can play to his

@ - EIVA Quarterfinal Match in Springfield, Mass.
25
The eastern Intercollegiate volleyball associationThe Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Asso-
ciation (EIVA) is an 11-team league that spon-
sors and facilitates collegiate men’s volleyball on
the Division I, II, and III levels. As one of the three
major Division I collegiate volleyball conferences
in the country, the EIVA holds an automatic bid
to the four-team NCAA Division I championship
tournament, with the EIVA champion proceed-
ing to the final four.
As a cross-divisional league, the EIVA fea-
tures schools that feature the highest in both
academic integrity and athletic success. Fea-
turing teams from six states that range from
the Northeast to the Mid-Atlantic region, the
highly-competitive league boasts multiple na-
tional champions both on the Division I and Divi-
sion III levels.
As currently comprised, the EIVA is divided
into two divisions, the six-team Tait conference
and the five-team Hay conference. Following the
conclusion of each season, the champion of the
Hay conference will ascend to the Tait, while the
sixth-place team in the Tait conference will move
to the spot vacated by the other Hay team. Each
team is required to play each member of their
division twice a season, both home and away.
In the EIVA’s post-season tournament, the
top five finishers in the Tait division and the top-
two finishers in the Hay division will compete,
with the top-two finishers in the Tait earning
first-round byes.

Give a Gift, Build a Legacy...Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those whohave generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club.
The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round.
With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improvedevery day working conditions within the athletic department.
We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward andtake our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athleticsis very bright because you care about our student-athletes.
