Francis Marion University 2011 Volleyball

FMU is named in honor of South Carolina’s Revolution-ary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nick-named the “Swamp Fox,” for using the terrain to out-foxthe British. Located about seven miles east of Florence,in the beautiful northeast section of South Carolina, the400-acre campus is about 90 miles from the state capitalof Columbia, 60 miles from the shores of Myrtle Beach,and 180 miles from the mountains of the Carolinas.

Francis Marion University placed82 student athletes, including

nine volleyball players, on last year’s Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll (minimum 3.0 grade point

average on a 4.0 scale during the academic year), nearly half of all our student athletes. FMU also placed

nine student athletes on both of its own fall and spring Swamp Fox Athletic-

Academic Honor Roll.

Francis Marion University 2010 Coaching StaffPaul MacDonald - FMU Volleyball Coach

Paul MacDonald, 38, is entering his sixth year as the head coach for the Francis MarionUniversity women's volleyball program. He owns an 137-123 career coaching mark in eight seasons,including a 88-74 record in his five years at Francis Marion. In five seasons, his Patriot teams haveproduced eight All-Conference selections.

This past year, the Patriots finished with a 15-16 mark with a pair of Patriots earning All-Conference honors and two gaining PBC All-Academic recognition. The Patriot squad earned anAVCA Team Academic Award (for the second year in a row) -- one of only four PBC schools to gainthat honor for 2010.

In 2008, MacDonald earned PBC "Coach of the Year" honors while guiding the Patriots to a23-9 record and the program's third-ever NCAA Division II National Tournament invitation. FMU placedsecond during the PBC regular-season and advanced to the title match of the PBC Tournament. In

2007, FMU was 13-21 and placed fourth during the Peach Belt regular season. In a very successful first campaign (2006),MacDonald guided the Patriots to a 26-8 record and a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship.

MacDonald came to FMU from Mount Mercy College, an NAIA school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In three seasons directing theMustang program, he compiled a 49-49 record, including a 25-11 mark in 2005 - the team's best record in more than a decade.Utilizing a roster that did not include any seniors, he also guided Mount Mercy to asecond-place finish in the Midwest Classic Conference with a 6-1 record and to a spotin the NAIA Region VII Tournament for the first time since 2002. For that effort, hereceived conference "Coach of the Year" honors.

A native of Flat Rock, Mich., a suburb of Detroit, MacDonald earned a B.A. degreein business from Michigan State University and an M.Ed. degree in physical educationfrom Wayne State University. He earned CAP I certification through the USA VolleyballCoaches' Accreditation Program in 2007.

Prior to accepting the position at Mount Mercy, he was an assistant coach at Divi-sion II Wayne State for the 2002 season, an assistant coach at Macomb County Com-munity College for the 2001 campaign, and was an assistant and interim head coachduring the 1999 season at Division I Oakland University.

MacDonald spent five years (2004-2008) with the USA National Olympic Develop-ment Program. He has five years of experience coaching at the high school level -including winning a district championship at Regina High School in Harper Woods,Mich. - and seven years of experience coaching at the Junior Olympics and club level.His Junior Olympic squads placed first in Michigan in 1998 and third in 2002.

He is a member of the United States Volleyball Association and the American Vol-leyball Coaches Association. He has worked camps at the universities of Iowa, Michi-gan, and Wisconsin; Michigan State University; Stanford University, Purdue University;Eastern Michigan University; Mount Mercy; and at high schools in Michigan. He was acoach for the 2006 USA High Performance A2 Camp in Charlotte, N.C., the 2007 USAHigh Performance A2 Camp in Davidson, N.C., and the 2008 USA High Performance A2Camp in Baltimore, Md. He now directs the FMU Patriot Volleyball Summer Campprograms and the Florence Juniors Volleyball Club.

Samantha Sasan - FMU Volleyball Assistant CoachSamantha "Sam" Sasan of Foothill Ranch, Calif., is entering her second season on the Patriotbench as an assistant coach.

Her primary coaching responsibilities will include recruiting, on-court coaching, individual playerworkouts, pre- and post-season workouts, and helping in the area of academic support for teammembers.

Sasan was the starting setter for Charleston Southern University for four seasons (2006-10), afterwhich she earned a B.A. degree in communications (minor in religion). She ended her playingcareer as the Buccaneers’ all-time leader in games played and ranked second in career assists andcareer service aces and was fourth in career digs.

She is a product of El Toro High School in Lake Forest, Calif. As a senior, she was named her team’s most valuable player, wascaptain of her squad, and garnered second-team All-League recognition. She ranked 13th in California for assists, while helpingEl Toro to a Top 8 state-wide showing.

For the three years prior to joining the FMU staff, Sasan served as a coach with the Charleston Junior Volleyball Club, includingheading the 15-year-old squad in 2010.

FMU 2011 Volleyball OutlookThe Francis Marion University women’s volleyball team will open its 2011 campaign by playing host to its own FMUInvitational Tournament this weekend. The six-team event will run from 9 a.m. through approximately 9 p.m. onboth Friday and Saturday (Sept. 2-3) in the Smith University Center. Admission is free. On Friday, FMU will playBelmont Abbey College at 1 p.m. and Newberry College at 5 p.m., while on Saturday the Patriots will meet ErskineCollege at 9 a.m. and Carson-Newman College at 5 p.m.

Sixth-year head coach Paul MacDonald welcomes back eight letterwinners, including six players who started ona regular basis, from last season’s 15-16 squad. However, the Patriots lost two All-Conference performers,including libero Kelsie Deaton who finished fourth on the Peach Belt Conference’s career digs list with 1886. “Weare looking forward to getting the season started,” MacDonald said. “The players are ready to put on the jerseysafter two weeks of pre-season practice.”

Leading the returnees are sophomore setter Nicole Bennett, senior middleblocker Danielle Parker, and senioroutside hitters Ashlee Crook and Amanda Mitchell. As a freshman, Bennett led the PBC in service aces per game(0.52) and ranked second in assists per game (9.69). Senior defensive specialist Hallie Legg also returns.

Parker tallied 79 blocks (second on team) and 168 kills with a .189 attack percentage last year, while Mitchell wasthird on the team with 208 kills and third with 62 total blocks. Crook averaged 2.11 kills and 2.85 digs per game lastseason. Legg was second on the team in 2010 with 283 digs (2.55 per set) and fifth with 15 service aces, whileposting a serve receive percentage of .937 covering nearly 350 receptions.

Four freshmen join the roster for the 2011 campaign: 6-0 middleblocker AlexMatz (Louisville, Ky.), 5-6 defensive specialist Meghan Peji (Virginia Beach, Va.),5-10 middleblocker and outside hitter Erin Porter (Woodbridge, Va.), and 6-0setter Sloane Shank (Fayetteville, N.C.).

“The seniors have done a good job in bring along the freshmen and showingthem what the culture should be as far as energy and effort on the court. Wehave first-year players in four different positions, but across the board we haveexperienced players in those roles to bring them along.

“Our senior class will be the key to our success in 2011. We are also looking forbig things from Nicole in the setter’s role.”

Other returnees include junior outside hitter Liz Drewry, sophomore middleblockerMegan Mooney, and sophomore outside hitter Paige Perreault. Both Legg andMitchell were named to the 2010 PBC Volleyball All-Academic Team, while Drewry,garnered honorable mention recognition.

The 2011 schedule includes two in-season tournaments, a match at Division IThe Citadel, and the PBC Tournament, which will be hosted in Augusta, Ga.

For the second consecutive year, the Francis Marion volleyball program earned an American Volleyball CoachesAssociation (AVCA) Team Academic Award, this time for the 2010-11 year. The 12-member Patriot squad re-corded a 3.34 GPA for this past academic year. The AVCA honored a record 478 programs – men’s and women’steams nationwide from high school through all levels of college participation. Francis Marion was one of fourPeach Belt Conference members recognized and one of only four Palmetto State schools honored (two each inNCAA Divisions I and II).

“I am very proud of the accomplishments that our student-athletes have earned in the classroom,” said MacDonald.“This recognizes their hard work and dedication both on and off the court. It continues to show how they are ableto balance academics and athletics, and exemplify the term ‘student-athletes’.”

SMITH UNIVERSITY CENTERNamed in honor of the university’s first president, Dr.Walter D. Smith, the Smith University Center providescomprehensive facilities for student services and ac-tivities as well as for recreation and athletic programsto serve students, faculty, and staff. Opened in 1974,the center’s gymnasium seats 2,547 for volleyball/basketball and has recently undergone several reno-vation projects. Improvements include new theatre-style seating on the east side, a hardwood floor, newscoreboards, a new lighting system, a new soundsystem, and a new paint job.

The FMU women’s volleyball team owns a 335-182 (.648) record in the Smith University Center, including a 14-1mark in 2008. Between 1995 and 1997, the squad won 30 consecutive home matches, and between 1995 and 2000,won 54 of 56 home contests (including undefeated home seasons in 1996 and 1998).

In addition to numerous sporting events, the building has hosted musical concerts, an appearance by Miss America1994 Kimberly Aiken, U.S. Presidential candidates, and both college and high school commencement exercises.Francis Marion hosted the 1978 AIAW Division II National Women’s Basketball Tournament. FMU hosted AIAWregional volleyball tournaments in 1978 and 1981 and the Peach Belt Conference volleyball tournament in 1992,1993, 1998, and 2006.

The 12-member Patriot squad recorded a 3.34 GPA for thispast academic year. The AVCA honored a record 478 programs – men’s and women’s teams nationwide fromhigh school through all levels of college participation. Francis Marion was one of four Peach Belt Conferencemembers recognized and one of only four Palmetto State schools honored (two each in NCAA Divisions I andII). The award, which was initiated in 1993, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayedexcellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade pointaverage on a 4.0 scale.
