FMU 2014 Women’s Soccer Pre-Season Outlook

6

The Francis Marion University women’s soccer program will open its 2014 campaign on Friday evening (Aug. 22) when the Patriots play host to GeorgiaSouthern University. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field in the Griffin Athletic Complex.

The first 150 fans will receive a free FMU t-shirt. General admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students (FMU students are admitted free with ID). Thegames will be streamed live online at http://www.ustream.tv/fmupatriots and shown locally on Time Warner Cable channel 11, courtesy of the Patriot SportsNetwork.

Third-year head coach Frank Pitt welcomes back 15 letterwinners, including eight-of-11 starters, from last season’s 2-17-0 squad. The Patriots won two oftheir final four contests, and six of the team’s final seven matches were decided by one goal.

Francis Marion is entering its 10th season competing at the NCAA Division I level. Following Friday’s opener, the Patriots will travel to Lexington, Ky., foran Aug. 29 match-up with SEC-power Kentucky. The 2014 schedule features eight home contests, two in-season tournaments, and a season-endingtournament with other Division I independent programs in Dover, Delaware.

In regards to the season opener, Georgia Southern won the first-ever meeting between the two programs last year in Statesboro. FMU is 9-10-0 all-timein season openers, and owns an all-time record of 184-143-16, including a 107-30-7 home mark.

“I feel upbeat about the season starting and I think the squad is in a good position heading into Friday’s match,” Pitt said. “The keys to our success thisyear will be to minimize our defensive mistakes and maintain possession of the ball. The players need to play with a positive attitude and be relaxed.“I feel good about our defense and we are getting there offensively. I thought we defended well in our exhibition match with Campbell (FMU allowed onlyeight shots and one goal), but we must be able to counter and score quickly at the other end.”

Leading the returnees are senior forwards Chanel Harris and Elizabeth Asare and senior defenders Sandy Odembo and Brittney Smith. Harris has beenselected as the pre-season Offensive Player of the Year for Division I independent programs by College Sports Madness. Altogether seven members ofthe FMU squad were named to the publication’s 2014 pre-season Independent All-Conference Team.

Joining Harris on the first-team squad is Asare, Smith, Odembo, and senior defender Kristina Marra. Marra will miss the 2014 campaign with an injury.Selected to the second-team squad are junior midfielder Arianna Pierner and junior defender Kristyn Leung.

Harris led the Patriots in scoring in 2013 with an independent schools-high eight goals and two assists. Asare tallied three goals and two assists, and Smithscored twice while logging nearly 77 minutes per match in the Patriot midfield. Odembo led all FMU field players in minutes played, registered two assists, and took the majority of the Patriots' corner kicks. Pierner started all 19 matches last season and averaged 73 minutes per contest, while Leung made 18starts, scored one goal, and averaged 78 minutes per match.

Also returning are sophomore midfielders Kelly Anthony (3 assists), Tori Whigham (3 goals), and Breanna Henderson; sophomore defender AllieDuckworth (1 goal), junior defenders Kylie Allen and Janise Finney, and senior midfielder Lexxis Cherry (1assist).

“I look for Chanel and Eli (Asare) to score goals up front and be a major part of our quick transition game. Kelly and Tori should also join in the scoring, butas a result of making runs and cleaning up unclaimed balls near the goal.

“Both Kelly and Arianna will be our quarterbacks in the midfield, although each in their own distinct way. Along the backline, Sandy and Kylie will play thecenter defender roles, while Kristyn and Brittney will play the outside back positions. This line-up should give us good speed along the backline and makefor an improved defense over last season.”

Junior Taylor O’Berry returns in goal after starting all 36 matches over the past two seasons. Last year, she registered a school-record 110 saves, ranking23rd nationally, in Division I and posted a 2.71 goals against average. “Taylor continues to improve her game all the time. Couple that with the fact that webrought in talented freshman Casey Murakami (West Ashley High School in Charleston, S.C.) who has pushed Taylor even further, and I feel verycomfortable with our net-minding crew.”

For the nine of the past 10 years, the FMU program has earned a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Team AcademicAward.

Salem earned an invitation to the Sky Blue camp and made it through several cuts. She traveled with the team fromthe Bob Smith Soccer Academy in Robbinsville, N.J., to Florida for a two-week preseason training camp.

When asked about her early pro experiences in 2010, Salem said, “This odysseyhas been amazing because I have met so many awesome people. This includes peopleand players from different countries and from different national teams, and I have heardeveryone's background stories. This experiencemeans a lot to me because, other than myself, thereis only one player here that comes from a smallschool. I am honored to even be here and be on thesame field as these players, and I feel privileged tohave the opportunity to learn from them and to havemade it through the tryout process this far."

A 2010 graduate with a B.S. degree in psy-chology, Salem was named to the FMU Swamp FoxAthletic-Academic Honor Roll each of her four years, and was selected to the Peach Belt Conference Presi-dential Honor Roll four times.

She is a graduate of Copley High School, where she was an All-State and All-Conference per-former, scoring 81 goals with 46 assists.
