FMU 2012 Women’s Soccer Pre-Season OutlookThe Pitt Crew readies for First Season

6

The Francis Marion University women’s soccer program, under the direction of first-year head coachFrank Pitt, will open its 2012 season on Sunday evening (Aug. 19) at Coastal Carolina University.

The match will kick-off at 7 p.m. on the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. The Chanticleers opened theirseason on Friday night at the University of Kentucky. Francis Marion leads the all-time series against CCU 3-0-1,

with the last meeting being a 1-1 tie in Conway during the 2010campaign. FMU is 9-8-0 all-time in season openers.

The Patriots are entering their 18th season and own an all-time record of 175-117-15, including a 101-24-7 home mark. How-ever, the team will christen its brand-new Hartzler Field on Tuesdaynight (Aug. 21) at 7 p.m. when the Patriots entertain PresbyterianCollege.

Pitt, the fourth coach in the program’s history, welcomes back10 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last season’s 4-13-1squad. Five of those losses were by one goal.

“I am very excited about starting the season, as are the play-ers,” said Pitt. “The major keys to success for us in 2012 will in-clude staying healthy and being able to possess the ball – whichhelps limit the number of goals you allow.”

“I was pleased with last week’s exhibition against Wofford. Itwas good for us to play an outside opponent, and we were able to gain experience while playing with a some-whatrelaxed approach (less pressure). Sunday, the stakes are a little higher as we start the regular season. We mustlimit our mistakes and play with the understanding that result now goes into our win-loss ledger.”

The Patriots return their top three scorers from 2011: junior midfielder Yasmin Bunter (4 goals, 4 assists),sophomore forward Elizabeth Asare (3 goals, 2 assists), and senior midfielder Kelly Kady (3 goals, 1 assist).Red-shirt freshman Taylor O’Berry, from Jacksonville, Fla., will mind the net for Francis Marion in 2012. “I waspleased with her work in the exhibition match, and she has worked hard during the pre-season. I am confident shewill do a good job in goal.”

Three members of the defensive back-line return: senior Rebeccah Hoekstra, a three-year starter, andsophomores Kristina Marra and Sandy Odembo.

Likely to join Bunter and Kady in the starting midfield is sophomore Brittney Smith, who started all 18matches as a freshman.

The 2012 roster includes six newcomers: four freshmen and two transfers. Three of the first-year playerswill likely be in the starting line-up on Sunday: sophomore Dominique Evans as a striker, freshman AriannaPierner in the midfield, and freshman Kristyn Leung along the defensive back. Last season at Limestone College,Evans tallied seven goals and three assists.

“Despite only having two seniors, we will be able to field an experienced team,” Pitt added. “Evans and(sophomore midfielder-forward Lexxis) Cherry both have ayear of collegiate experience under their belts and the fresh-men have fit right in with our program.”

The 2012 FMU slate includes six home contests atthe new stadium. The road schedule includes matches atDuke, Maryland, Texas Tech, Charlotte, and Cleveland Statealong with a trip to the Sleep Inn Classic hosted by SouthCarolina State University in Orangeburg.

For the seven of the past nine years, the FMU pro-gram has earned a National Soccer Coaches Association ofAmerica (NSCAA) College Team Academic Award. Enter-ing its 18th season, the Patriot program owns an all-timemark of 175-117-15, including an all-time home record of101-27-7. The program has won double-digit matches 12times in 17 seasons.
