2012 SEASON OUTLOOK

Excitement for 2012 Season

National Tournament over the past fiveseasons.

“We are excited to start the 2012 cam-paign,” Vallee stated. “Our returnees areshowing a passion to achieve successand prove people wrong. They are striv-ing toward personal goals that will in turnhelp achieve team goals. Moving into agreat new stadium doesn’t hurt moraleeither.”

“As a squad, we must bring with us allthree parts of the game (defense, pitch-ing, offense) to be successful in the toughPeach Belt Conference. We return a verysolid defense (ranked 27th in Division IIlast year with a .968 fielding percentage)

and one of our two starting pitchers from2011. We feel as though we have in-creased the quality of our pitching stafffrom a year ago. So now we must alsoincrease our hitting (.252 team averagein 2011).

Leading the returnees is All-Region andtwo-time All-Conference center fielderDestinea Schneider (.352, 28 runs, 22-25 SBs) and two-time All-Conferencesecond baseman Ashley Jaramillo (.293,3 HRs, 28 RBI). Schneider ranked 47thnationally last season in stolen basesper game, and is 33-of-40 in stolen baseattempts over the past two seasons witha .414 on-base percentage. Jaramillo hasstarted 148 of 149 games during herthree-year career at FMU and has tallieda .314 average, 13 homers, and 103 RBIs.

Right-handed pitcher Kayla Ellingsen (11-8, 2.16 ERA) returns on the mound alongwith junior southpaw Murphy McConnell

(2-2, 2.47 ERA). Vallee pointed toEllingsen as her probable starter inSaturday’s season opener. She alsomentioned that freshman righty KatieCarnes, a product of Central of PagelandHigh School, will also see some inningsthis weekend.

Junior catcher Olivia Ferguson (.205) re-turns for her third year behind home plate.Junior third baseman Tristan Faile (.260,2 HRs), sophomore utility players CarsonSummersett (.207) and Olivia Zielinski(.184), and Ferguson were among sixplayers from last year’s squad to earnNFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete rec-ognition. Other returnees include se-nior starting first baseman MegannSallinger (.240, team-leading 4 HRs),sophomore utility player Taylor Luff(.235), and sophomores Sara Broderick(.256) and Lindsey Brown (.187).Broderick and Brown started a combined57 games as freshman and should bevying for starting spots in 2012.

The 2012 squad includes six newcom-ers: three freshmen and three transfers.Heading that list are junior outfielder JazzHoliday (Spartanburg Methodist College),a Florence native; freshman catcher andthird baseman Krissy Longstreet (Can-terbury School of Florida); and Carnes.

“Jazz has worked extremely hard duringthe preseason and could blossom into aforce in the Peach Belt. She possessesthe ability to be a power hitter or a draghitter from the left side. With Krissyhaving the skill to catch, it will allow usto move Olivia (Ferguson) to the outfieldon some occasions.

In 2011, the Patriots also ranked 52ndnationally in earned run average (2.36),53rd in stolen bases per game (1.35),and 91st in double plays turned per game(0.28).
