Francis Marion University will open its2011 softball season this weekend withfour games at the Early Bird Tournamentin Aiken at Citizens Park playing fourgames in two days.

The Patriots will play their home openeron Feb. 13 against Lenoir-Rhyne Univer-sity at 1 p.m. on the FMU Softball Field. The Patriots' 52-game schedule includesnine home doubleheaders and the annualPatriot Invitational Tournament and thePeach Belt Conference Tournament, bothto be hosted at the Freedom FlorenceSoftball Complex.

Seventh-year FMU head coach StaceyVallee welcomes back nine letterwinners, including five position starters, and onestarting pitcher, from the 2010 squad thatfinished 36-16 and earned the program’ssecond NCAA Division II National Tourna-ment invitation in three seasons. The Pa-triots advanced to the championship gameof both the Peach Belt Conference Tour-nament and the NCAA Dahlonega South-east Regional.

Leading the returnees is All-Region out-fielder Chelle Phillips (.349, 47 runs, 2HRs, 31 RBI), All-Conference secondbaseman Ashley Jaramillo (.323, 5 HRs,43 RBI), and All-PBC centerfielderDestinea Schneider (.350, 11-15 SBs).Phillips was also recently named to thepreseason All-PBC squad.

Senior right-hander Cea Knox returns onthe mound. In 23 contests last season,Knox was 14-6 with a 3.33 earned run av-erage. Sophomore lefty Murphy

McConnell, who appeared in four gameslast season, also returns from last year’spitching staff.

However, the Patriots must replace ca-reer record-setting lefty pitcher and des-ignated hitter Michaela Wolf and four-yearstandouts Jessica Birchmeier (LF) andKat Beauvais (3B). Wolf, a four-time 20-game winner, left owning nearly everyPatriot pitching mark. Vallee knows thatfilling that void will not be easy.

“No one player is going to replaceMichaela. What we must do as team isreplace her numbers. That includes winsand innings on the mound and key hitsat the plate. And, this means every spot

in the line-up. We return a good core ofstarters and several newcomers who willstep in and contribute immediately.”

Shortstop Jessica Hogan is back for hersenior season after starting 50 of 52games in 2010. Sophomore OliviaFerguson returns behind the plate aftera productive freshman campaign that sawher bat .260 with a .367 on-base percent-age while starting all but one contest.Sophomore outfielder Tristan Faile re-turns, but will likely move to the infield –possibly third base. Faile’s freshmanyear – during which she hit .286 – wascut short by an injury after 15 games.

Phillips, who ranked 89th nationally inruns scored per game (0.90) last year, will likely move from right to left field.Sophomore Ashleigh Sammut, a trans-fer from the University of Mobile that at-tended FMU last season but sat out, will

Sammut is one of 12 newcomers, a groupthat consists of nine freshmen and threetransfers.

Junior Megann Sallinger, a transfer fromGulf Coast Community College, will bethe probable starter at first base, whilelocal product Carson Summersett (WestFlorence High School) may open the yearat the designated hitter position.

Among the other newcomers most likelyto contribute to the Patriot attack earlythis season are freshmen outfieldersBrooke Barnhill (Mauldin, SC) and OliviaZielinski (Greenville, SC) and freshmeninfielders Lindsey Brown (Concord, NC)and Sara Broderick (Sunrise, FL).

Vallee hinted that either Knox or juniorrighty Kayla Ellingsen would start on themound for Saturday’s season opener.Ellingsen recorded a 19-8 mark with a2.30 ERA last season at the State Col-lege of Florida, while also logging animpressive 210 innings.

“We are anxious to get the seasonstarted,” Vallee said. We are ready toface someone else’s pitcher instead ofplaying amongst ourselves. It will beexciting to see how this incoming classcan mesh with the returnees and form acohesive group that we hope will battlefor the Peach Belt title and a berth in theNCAA Tournament.”

Knox, Ferguson, and Faile were amongsix players from last year’s squad to earnNFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete rec-ognition in 2010, and the Patriots re-ceived an NFCA All-Academic Teamaward for 2010, the fifth consecutive yearFMU has earned that honor (and seventhtime in the past 11 years).

Francis Marion has won at least 30games in 12 of the last 14 season.
