Zielinski were NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes for the 2011-12 season.

Looking ahead to 2013, Valle said, “Theteam is looking really good. We havethree dominating pitchers (Luff, Carnes, and junior righty Danielle Payne), whichis a luxury. Add to that a good hittingattack and if we continue on that trackwe will be right where we want to be.We just need to work on closing the door, and that is something we have been fo-cusing on all year.

“That is the most important key, closingthe door. We were second in the confer-ence in batting (.291) and had the leastamount of strikeouts, but not being ableto finish kept us from winning a few keygames. We just couldn't drive those runsin. That's one thing we have to do. Wehad some games that we lost 1-0 andjust couldn’t get the big hit. As long asour pitchers do their job and out hittersare able to push across those runs, thenwe will be able to challenge for the con-ference title.”

Payne was 17-18 last season at AikenTech with a 2.01 ERA.

“The girls are loving the new facilities.Last year, we only played one double-header here and maybe practiced fivetimes, so being able to practice duringthe fall allowed us to feel like this is nowour home.”

In addition to Payne, other newcomersinclude junior infielder KristieHanewinckel (St. Johns River State Col-lege) and freshman Cat Zalud (Sarasota,Fla.), Kristen English (Clio, S.C.), LaurenDreitlein (Knoxville, Tenn.), ChristinaSmoley (Ocoee, Fla.), Kelsi Thuer(Middletown, Del.), and Taylor Barrineau(Monroe, N.C.).

The Patriots’ schedule for this seasonincludes 12 home doubleheaders.

Francis Marion has won at least 30games in 13 of the last 16 seasons.
