welcome to a season of discovery!
...and welcome to Principal Guest Conduc-tor, John Morris russell! i have performed with John many times and i’m excited to be making music with him here in hilton head. Maestro russell will be conducting six concerts; four in the Masterworks se-ries, the international Piano Competition
and symphony under the stars. we also welcome guest conduc-tors, sean newhouse, teddy Abrams, Bohuslav rattay, daniel Mey-er and Arthur Post for the remaining two Masterworks concerts and the three concerts in our new light Classics series.
on the Masterworks series we will be playing some of the greatest symphonies - dvorak’s eighth, Beethoven’s second, rachmaninoff’s second, haydn’s “london” symphony as well as rimsky-Korsakov’s sensuous suite, scheherazade.
the three concerts of the light Classics series will feature shorter, more familiar works of the highest quality. we will have an evening featuring majestic trumpet music along with respighi’s popular An-
cient Airs and dances and Mozart’s brief “Posthorn” symphony; a holiday Concert with hhso youth Concerto Competition win-ner, Annie Bender, the hhso Chorus and music from the nut-cracker; and finally, Zhu wang, the sensational 14 year old winner of our 2011 young Artists Piano Competition in a concert includ-ing favorites by Mozart, Johann strauss, Jr. and Kodaly.
i’m looking forward to our brilliant, young soloists. two hilton head international Piano Competition past winners return; ran dank will play rachmaninoff’s great rhapsody on a theme by Paganini and edisher savitsky will perform shostakovich’s lively First Piano Concerto. we will offer the sibelius and Brahms violin Concertos and a Cello Concerto by haydn as well as Mozart’s immortal Clarinet Concerto.
every concert will be a discovery. we hope you will join us as we break new ground while bringing you the excellent performances you have always loved.

Beethoven’s buoyant 2nd symphony begins to break the bounds of the classical symphony; haydn’s Cello Concertos were among the first to explore the capabilities of the cello as a solo instrument; and walker’s lyric has echoes of Barber’s Adagio.
