Established schools are wary of changing their ethos, while new institutions try to gain an ethos. But how do you define such a nebulous quality? One way is to record the story of the school because contained within that story is the evolution of its ethos. After 400 years of evolution we have a school such as Foyle, which encapsulates not only the collective spirit of its former pupils, but also reflects the strength of the city in which it is to be found. In a very real sense the history of Foyle is the history of Londonderry. And the character of Derry has been shaped by the existence of Foyle. I hope that as you delve into the pages of this celebratory volume, you will discover the essence of the school. W J Magill Headmaster A P ORTRAIT OF F OYLE COLLEGE ABOUT THE BOOK As you read this, Foyle College is poised at the threshold of an exciting future – built on four centuries of tradition. Founded by the Merchant Taylor, Mathias Springham, in 1617, as the Free Grammar School, it became Foyle College in 1814 and eventually merged with the Londonderry Academical Institution in 1896. Further mergers took place among schools in the city until in 1976 the Foyle and Londonderry Amalgamation Act resulted in the city’s first coeducational grammar school. Today, the College is within two years of moving into a superb new greenfield campus at Clooney, to be known as Springham Campus. With our 400th anniversary looming, Foyle has commissioned a new high-quality book to celebrate both the past and the future of education in the city. An editorial team composed of former pupils and interested members of staff will draw on the substantial and detailed records of all predecessor schools to provide a vibrant illustrated portrait of the educational legacy: additionally, first-hand pupil accounts of lived experiences from the early 20th century to the present will be a key feature of the book and the editors warmly welcome further contributions, which should be sent to the address shown. The book will be produced in collaboration with Third Millennium Publishing Ltd, the leading international publisher of books for and about educational, ecclesiastical and military institutions, and noted for the highest standards in design, illustration and production. Illustrated in full colour throughout, this will be a volume to treasure for everyone with memories of their schooldays. THEMES AND TOPICS The format of the book will be thematic and will include reminiscences by former pupils, staff and governors, as well as important events in the history of the College. Section 1: Chronological history from foundation to the present, including the education of women in the city Section 2: Educational role, academic achievements and famous alumni Section 3: Lived experiences: the war years; boarding school; preparatory school; Lawrence Hill; Londonderry High School; amalgamation; music and drama; sport; clubs and societies; trips and tours Section 4: The College today and a vision for the future Visit www.tmiltd.com to order securely online and for book updates SUBSCRIBE NOW TO SAVE £10.50 AND HAVE YOUR NAME LISTED IN THE BOOK Special subscriber price: £29.50 + p&p. A Portrait of Foyle College

General Editor: Sean McMahon

Mathias Springham Armiger ad honorem Dei et bonarum Literarum Propagationem Scholam hanc fundavit Anno Salutis 1617 …Ne Umquam cesseris

FROM THE ENTRANCE TO THE FIRST SCHOOL HOUSE

“One of the best conducted and most useful diocesian schools in Ireland. It is almost the only school in which navigation is taught.”

IRISH COMMISSIONERS OF EDUCATION, 1827

“On a bright September morning in 1877 two young girls aged ten and eleven and a half years proudly walked into 11 Queen Street, a gloomy house opposite Hogg’s factory, little thinking they were founding the famous Londonderry High School in years to come.”

HELEN M WILLIAMS, FIRST RESIDENT

OF L.H.S. OLD GIRLS’ ASSOCIATION

“Strand House school as I remember it in Asylum Road was a wonderful place, so big and rambling. What fun we had playing in the open underground part below the KG at the side of the large garden, and the great excitement and daring when we ventured along the narrow dark passage lined on either side with boarders’ trunks or to hide in some of the small dark rooms; these were the unlit underground cellar parts of the extension.”

MABEL R COLHOUN, SUMMER 1960

St Lurach’s School and Victoria College

The aim of the School is to send out into the world girls who are useful and happy in home and professional life, and the various activities are arranged so that each girl has ample opportunity of developing her individual talents.

Ωs αει ενωπιον του Θεου. Ever in my great task master’s eye.

FROM THE SCHOOL PROSPECTUS, 1877

“I entered form 1 at Foyle in September 1941. I say ‘entered ‘Foyle’ but not the buildings, The Army occupied the Academy Road site and the Navy was in our building at Lawrence Hill. We used rooms at the back of the Technical College.”

FRED R WRIGHT
