2011 Season Outlook

4

Last season, the Senators fi nished 26-2 and won their ninth national title. However, a signifi cant change in team personnel and a coaching change have left several important questions unanswered. Even with a new head coach at the helm and fi ve key newcomers on the squad, the goal for the AUM men’s tennis teams is simple. Win the 10th National Championship in school history. Many teams across the country would be thrilled to return a pair of All-American’s, but the Senators must also replace fi ve All-America selections that did not return. Sophomore Loic Didavi, a second-team All-American in 2010, and fellow sophomore Bence Toth, an honorable mention All-America selection last season, highlight the returning players for AUM. Both Didavi and Toth are experienced players, appearing in 17 singles matches each and playing a combined

43 doubles matches. Didavi posted a 14-3 record singles and an 18-3 mark in doubles, while Toth was 15-2 in singles matches and 18-4 in doubles play. Along with the experience of having a year under his belt at the col-legiate level, Toth also enjoyed a stellar fall season in which he won the ITA South Region singles championship and fi nished third at the ITA Champion-ships. Sophomore Claudio Andrade also returns following a freshman cam-paign in which he fi nished 8-1 in singles play. Joining the Senators are sophomores Bruno Savi, Boris Obama and Josh Reason, as well as freshmen Philipp Mohr and Zinelabidine Jouini. Savi and Obama will compete for the No. 1 and No. 2 spot in singles, while Didavi and Toth are slated to battle for the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Andrade and Jouini are likely to chal-lenge for the fi nal two spots, but Reason and Mohr are also expected to see action in singles. In doubles, the duo of Andrade and Savi are likely to be paired after the duo won both the ITA South Region and the ITA Championships this fall. The tandem also advanced to the championship match of the USTA/ITA “Super Bowl” of Small College Tennis. Didavi is projected to be paired with Obama, as the pair won two matches at the ITA South Region Champi-onship in the fall before they were defeated by Savi and Andrade. The fi nal team will likely be composed of Toth and Jouini, while Mohr and Reason will also be factors in the doubles rotation.Sophomore Bence Toth

Sophomore Loic Didavi

Expectations for the 2011 season are high for the AUM women’s tennis program, which had its streak of six consecutive NAIA National Championships snapped last season. Despite the return of four experienced players back from their national runner-up team, the Lady Senators will begin the season two points down in each match, as they have only fi ve players on their current roster. Junior Ana Veselinovic and sophomore Morgane Zowczak, both of whom earned All-America honors in 2010, highlight the returning players, while junior Kveta Hajkova and sophomore Alina Tseplukhova also return with a year of col-legiate experience under their belt. Veselinovic fi nished her fi rst season at AUM with a 10-3 singles record and an 18-4 doubles record, playing primarily at the No. 1 position of each. Zowczak also enjoyed a strong inaugural campaign with the Lady Senators, playing 18 singles matches and posting a 14-4 record. She also excelled in doubles play, appearing at all three spots, and recording an 18-4 record. Hajkova and Tseplukhova were late additions to the program and played in just 11 singles contests between the two, but were victorious in 10 of those matches. Hajkova also captured eight doubles victories, playing mainly at the No. 2 position.

Freshman Jade Curtis joins the program from Saltash, England, and has already made an impact on the program. During the fall season, Veselinovic

and Curtis battled in the championship match of the ITA South Regional Championship, while the duo of Curtis and Hajkova captured the doubles crown at the tournament. Veselinovic and Curtis are slated to battle for the top spot in the singles rotation for the Lady Senators this season. Hajkova also enjoyed a strong fall season and will compete with Zowczak for the No. 3 and No. 4 posi-tions, respectively. Tseplukhova will likely play at the No. 5 position. In doubles, Veselinovic and Zowczak are expected to form the top tandem, while Hajkova and Curtis will likely team at the No. 2 spot. Tseplukhova and Hajkova are also a viable duo to add to the rotation, should an injury occur.

AUM Tennis Head Coach Rolando Vargas

5

Rolando Vargas is currently in his fi rst year as the AUM men’s and women’s tennis head coach, after spending the past year at the Montgomery Country Club where he was the head professional. During his year at the Montgomery Country Club, Vargas developed and conducted private lessons and group clinics for all ages, while also evaluating players to improve individual techniques and strategies. He was also respon-sible for coordinating schedule competitions held at the venue. Prior to joining the county club, Vargas spent three seasons as an assistant tennis coach at Troy University. While working with the Trojans, his duties included the development of training and conditioning programs, scouting and evaluation of opponents and skill development for both the men’s and women’s teams. He also assisted in the recruiting process and assisted in summer camps. With Vargas on staff, the Troy women’s tennis team captured the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship in 2004, while earning a national team ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in 2008.

Vargas joined the coaching ranks fol-lowing a standout playing career at Troy and Bethune-Cookman University. During his playing career with the Trojans, he compiled a 34-18 overall singles record, while amassing a 26-20 record in doubles matches. Vargas earned singles victories against the former top players from Texas Tech, Florida, Tulane, Texas, North Carolina and LSU, in addition to a doubles victory over the then top-10 nationally ranked tandem for the University of Alabama. He was also named the Rookie of the Year at BCU after posting the top singles win-ning percentage on the team as a freshman. In addition to his collegiate playing, Vargas also sports an impressive international resume, as he has won numerous national tournaments and earned a No. 5 ranking in Mexico from 2004-07. As a player, he defeated Davis Cup players from Canada, Eng-land, South Africa, Paraguay, Venezuela, Guatemala, Bolivia, Norway, New Zealand, Bahamas and Mexico. Vargas earned his bachelor’s degree in international business from Troy in 2004 and later added his master’s degree in sport and fi tness management, from which he graduated magna cum laude. He and his wife, Tiffany, have a daughter, Amaia, and reside in Elba, Ala.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITYAuburn Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the sur-rounding counties. The fi rst classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural fi rms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall of 1971. A broad-based academic institution, AUM is organized into fi ve schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continuing Education offer additional educational opportunities. In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern As-sociation of Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate

institution. In 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008, accreditation was reaffi rmed by the Southern Association.

MISSION STATEMENTAuburn Montgomery’s mission, as the metropolitan campus of Auburn University, a land-grant institution, is to foster and exemplify excellence in education through instruction, research and service. Auburn Montgomery blends the traditional views of the university as a community of scholars with the contempo-rary view of the university as an integral part of the surrounding community, state and region. AUM provides academic programs that are characteristic of the fi nest traditions of scholarship and consistent with the responsibility of the university to provide support for the functions of government, regional economic growth and cultural enrichment through the arts.

WHY CHOOSE AUBURN MONTGOMERY?Today’s economic crisis doesn’t have to cost you your col-lege education. This year alone, Auburn Montgomery offered students more than $4 million in Pell Grants and another $20 million in student loans. Couple that with challenging classes and small class sizes, and Auburn Montgomery can provide you with an excellent education at a price you can afford.

A STUDENT-TO-FACULTY RATIO OF 15:1At Auburn Montgomery you won’t spend your freshman year in classes fi lled with 300 of your peers. Our classes are deliberately kept small (an average of 20 students), giving you more per-sonal attention and allowing your professors to get to know you.

BIG CAMPUS BENEFITS WITH A SMALL CAMPUS FEELWith programs of study in more than 90 areas, Auburn Mont-gomery’s courses run the gamut from accounting to sociology. We have sororities and fraternities for those who want to go Greek and numerous active clubs and organizations. Plus, your destination is never more than a fi ve-minute walk on campus. FOUR-DAY WEEKSAt Auburn Montgomery, many students take classes just four days a week – Monday through Thursday – making it easier for them to work, get home on the weekends or even travel. But students also fi nd AUM can accommodate just about any sched-ule since classes are offered days, nights, weekends and online. We even offer a growing number of mini-term classes, allowing students to progress more rapidly.

CUTTING-EDGE PROGRAMSAuburn Montgomery’s Storage Area Network Center of Excel-lence teaches information technology students to manage net-works that store vast quantities of digital data. One of a handful of such centers in the country, it has been extremely successful in placing graduates in rewarding high-tech jobs with companies like Unisys.

The City of Montgomery

Montgomery is at once a friendly southern city of grace and charm and a dynamic leader for economic growth and strength in the Southeast. Historic homes rest in peace-ful repose next to towering modern structures of glass and steel with perfect harmony. Lush city parks boasting world-class sports facilities are nestled just a short hop

from a network of roads, rails and runways that transport people and goods through-out the country. Montgomery really does have something for everyone. As Alabama’s Capital City, Montgomery is the seat of state government and the catalyst for decisions that are far-reaching, not just when the legislature is in session, but throughout the

year. People from throughout the state and even the na-tion come here to meet with lawmakers and present their idea or lobby their position, hoping to infl uence the direc-tion of progress in the coming years. In addition to its turnkey position in governmental affairs, Montgomery holds a unique position in concerns of military training, technology, defense and education as the location of Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base. Maxwell Air Force Base is the home of Air University, one of the military’s premiere educational facilities. Offi cers from all branches of the armed forces attend classes here. Gunter is the location of the 754th Electronics Systems Group (ELSG), which provides technical and customer service support as well as acquisition and program management oversight of over 160 Combat Support Information Tech-nology (IT) systems. The ELSG also manages the Air Force standard desktop environment, and serves as the USAF lead for software program management under the aus-pices of the Department of Defense Enterprise Software Initiative. Montgomery is a city of vast economic diversity, with state government, the military, regional government, wholesale and retail trade, agricultural support and indus-try providing a well-balanced economic environment. The city’s role as a regional trade center is fi rmly established, serving as a wholesaling and distribution gateway to the Southeast in addition to the 22-county central Alabama

area. In 2002, Montgomery got the good news that Hyun-dai would locate its fi rst United States automobile manu-facturing facility in the Capital City. The construction of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama’s 2-million-square-foot automotive manufacturing facility was completed in 2004. Hyundai’s fi rst North American plant employs over 2,000 workers and produces the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Hyundai Sonata. Hyundai suppliers in the Montgomery metropolitan area have created more than $221 million in capital investment and 2,264 jobs. Area hospitals offer comprehensive medical services and facilities, as well as cutting-edge specialty services and practices. Montgomery residents have access to neonatal intensive care, open-heart surgical and cardiac treatment facilities and physicians, rehabilitative and therapeutic orthopedic medicine, cancer treatment centers and more. Additionally, there are many walk-in clinics that offer gen-eral medicine and private practice physician offi ces with services ranging from family practice to internal medicine and ophthalmology. Montgomery and surrounding area veterans also are served by the VA Medical Center.

Things to See and Do Montgomery offers a wealth of recreational and cultural activities for people of all ages and interests. The city has

been dubbed the “birthplace of Civil War and Civil Rights.” It was the fi rst capital of the Confederacy, and the location from which the telegram was sent that started battle in the War Between the States. A star on the steps of the State Capitol building (which is on the Nation-al Register of Historic Places) marks the spot where Jefferson

Davis was sworn in as president of the Confederate States of America. Montgomery also is the location of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s pulpit, from which he preached the gospel of non-violent revolution in the fi ght for Civil Rights, and is the site of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which sparked the movement for equal rights throughout the nation. The Rosa Parks Library and Museum provides a glimpse into

this important event that shaped the destiny of a na-tion, along with its Children’s Annex, which provides a background on segregation through an interactive “time machine” exhibit. Visitors also should stop at the Civil Rights Memorial Center, located alongside the Civil Rights Memorial, de-signed by famed architect Maya Lin. The center, operated by the Southern Poverty Law Center, contains state-of-the-art exhibits and in-depth information about Civil Rights Movement martyrs, a 69-seat theater, a classroom for edu-cational activities and a section dedicated to contemporary social justice issues and the Wall of Tolerance. The city is home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the fi fth largest Shakespeare Festival in the world, which draws visitors from throughout the world. Also located in Blount Cultural Park is the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, which houses an extensive permanent collection, including Old Master prints by such artists as Rembrandt, Caneletto and Goya, and noted American artists John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper. Additionally, there is world-class ballet, art education opportunities, a symphony orchestra and more. There also are many enjoyable family activities. The Montgomery Zoo boasts more than 700 animals from fi ve different continents, including an African elephant ex-hibit. People of all ages will be fascinated by a visit to Old Alabama Town, where they can see how early Alabamians lived and worked, or the Alabama Department of Archives and History, with its wealth of information. Children will be especially delighted by the archives’ “Grandma’s Attic” exhibit, which is full of hands-on activities, costumes and games. Another fun treat is the unique Alabama Cattle-

men’s Associa-tion “Mooseum,” which provides a history of cow-boy culture and livestock produc-tion. Shopping is also a popular pastime. Mont-gomery has unique boutiques tucked away into historic districts like Old Cloverdale and the Mulberry District, as well as fi rst-class shopping malls and centers.

Eastdale Mall boasts the area’s only indoor ice skating rink, in addition to a wide variety of shops and eateries. Festival Plaza offers specialty shops, Rave Motion Pictures theater, and Shall We Paint?, a paint-your-own pottery activity and shop. The Shoppes at EastChase is a “lifestyle center” with upscale retailers and restaurants. And there’s so much more. Montgomery has many shops and restaurants sure to suit any visitor’s whim.

Sports and Recreation In February 2003, Montgomerians were thrilled to learn that the AA baseball team owned by Orlando Rays Base-ball Inc., which is owned by the Major League Baseball team the Tampa Bay Rays, had been acquired to play ball in Montgomery. The team was dubbed the Montgomery Biscuits and a new $26 million baseball stadium opened

in Spring 2004 beside the Alabama River. The stadium is a key element in the city’s ongoing Riverfront development and downtown revitalization project, with downtown and riverfront investment now totaling more than $900 million. A riverwalk and new convention center and hotel, The Renaissance, have added more appeal to the downtown area. Additionally, the city’s Parks and Recreation Depart-ment operates many facilities located throughout the city, hosting such activities as golf, swimming, tennis, softball and other sports, plus artistic and creative endeavors, physical fi tness classes, activities for those with physical or mental disabilities, and educational programs, including a planetarium. The city’s Cramton Bowl hosts high school and college football games, as well as special events, and Paterson Field provides facilities for high school and col-lege baseball games. Visitors to the River Region can also visit the nearby Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Prattville. The trail is rec-ognized as one of the fi nest golf experiences anywhere.

The Southern States Athletic Conference and NAIA

29

The 2010-11 academic year marks the 11th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). The newly expanded conference now showcases 16 member institu-tions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Inter-collegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State Univer-sity, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the offi cial name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its 16 member institu-tions. Since the conference’s inception and affi liation with the NAIA, 21 SSAC teams and 10 individuals have claimed na-tional titles, while 22 teams have fi nished national runners-up. Since the inception of its athletic program in 1975, Au-burn Montgomery has been a member of the National As-

sociation of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 19 national championships, and six of the school’s eight varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering fi rst-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affi rmed its commitment to equality by becoming the fi rst national organization to of-fer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character develop-ment. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an op-portunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Charac-ter program. By applying the fi ve core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsman-ship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefi t of each individual.
