The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center

was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066

in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of stu-dents of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commit-ment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.

History: Now entering its 21st year of existence in 2010-11, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 29 national championships and 25 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basket-ball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national champion-ship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf champion-ships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while Armstrong Atlantic State women’s tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2009-10 season was among the most successful the league has seen in its 20 years. AASU won their third consecu-tive women’s tennis national championship while the Augusta State men’s basketball team continued their unprecedented run with a third straight appearance in the Elite Eight. Flagler became the first PBC volleyball team to reach the NCAA Final Four. The North Georgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation in every regular-season softball poll while, in all, five PBC programs were ranked #1 in the nation (Georgia College men’s golf, ASU men’s basketball, AASU men’s and women’s tennis). The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt expanded to 13 members, the most the league has ever had, with the additions of the University of Montevallo and Flagler College. The two schools also returned a league presence to Florida and broke new ground in Alabama. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Kendall Blanchard, president of Georgia Southwestern State University, began the first of his two-year term as the league president in July of 2010.

J.H. Satcher Field

J.H. Satcher Field officially became the home of the USC Aiken softball program on March 22, 2004. On that day, USCA opened play on its new field by sweeping two games from Newber-ry College, winning the first 8-0 and the second game by a score of 4-3. The former home of USC Aiken baseball, J.H. Satcher Field was reno-vated in the winter and spring of 2004. Located conveniently in the middle of campus, J.H. Satcher Field includes a climate-controlled press box, a conces-sion stand, plenty of parking, coaches’ offices and a locker room at the field. Included among the 1,000 seats are 500 seats with backs. The playing surface is made up of clay and sod. The Pacers Women played their final 10 home games of the 2004 season on their new field, posting a 7-3 record, including a doubleheader sweep of Augusta State. Jami Cornwell, the only Pacer soft-ball player to have her jersey retired, also has the honor of getting the first hit at J.H. Satcher Field. With one out in the bottom of the first inning of game one against Newberry, Cornwell drove a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for the first hit and first home run at J.H. Satcher Field. It didn’t take long for the Pacer Women to become accustomed to their new field. In their inaugural season at the park, USCA hit .362 with seven home runs and 45 RBIs at J.H. Satch-er. The Pacer Women outscored their opponents, 51-30, at their new home. Since 2005, USC Aiken has con-tinued to post good numbers at the friendly confines. The Lady Pacers are a combined 47-27 during the last three seasons. They have outscored their opponents 287-230 during that span. On June 11th and 12th, 2004, J.H. Satcher Field served as the host of the 20th Annual South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports All-Star Softball Games.

Pacer Path Cross Country Course

Pacer Path is a four-mile-long, 15-feet-wide grass and earth multipurpose fitness trail, which has been built on prop-erty adjacent to the Convocation Center. Pacer Path has been built to NCAA standards and it is the only course at a Peach Belt Conference School.

“Pacer Pit” Soccer Field

This 700-seat complex has provided a solid backdrop for a number of Pacer victories. Since 2001, 27 of the 38 victo-ries for the men have come at “Pacer Pit.” In the same period, 24 of the Lady Pacers’ 37 wins have occurred at the friendly confines.

Tennis Complex

The complex, which is adjacent to J.H. Satcher Field, includes seven lighted courts, a coach’s office, and a club-house. Spectators can choose whether to sit next to the court of their choice, or in the bleachers located next to the number one singles court.

Palmetto Golf Club

Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892 and is rec-ognized as the fourth oldest golf course in the United States. In 1934 Alister McKenzie, the Scottish golf architect who built Augusta National, redesigned the greens. The clubhouse was built in 1902 by the same man who built the Boston Gardens, Stanford White. White constructed an exact scale model of the clubhouse at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island, N.Y.

Roberto Hernandez Stadium

The 1,000-seat, state-of-the-art stadium features a beautiful grass and clay surface with all the amenities of a top-notch Division I ballpark. A clubhouse, players’ lounge, coaches’ offices, modern press box with separate radio broadcast booth, training facilities, top-of-the-line scoreboard with message center, and 850 covered seats are among the highlights. The crown jewel of the facility is the Roberto Her-nandez Hall of Fame Room.

USC Aiken Athletic Facilities

USC Aiken Convocation Center

The Convocation Center gives the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs a state-of-the-art facility in which to practice and play and gives the athletic department as a whole a spacious area with modern offices in which to operate. The main arena seats 3,600 for athletic events.

Currently the longest tenured coach in the Peach Belt Conference, University of South Carolina Aiken head coach Jerry Snyder will begin his 24th season at the helm of the Pacer Softball Program with a record of 529-527 in NCAA Division II action since 1992 and an overall record of 552-550 since 1988 when the program began. Snyder has accomplished a lot during his time at the reins of the squad, and after a par season in 2010, he will be looking to guide the 2011 edition of the softball squad to even more success in one of the toughest conferences in all of NCAA Division II softball. The 2010 Pacer squad fell just short of their expectations after ending the 2009 campaign with the program’s first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Tournament. The season started off slow as the Pacers endured a slue of inclement weather cancellations, but once they got rolling, Snyder’s team showed flashes of bril-liance despite struggling at times on both sides of the ball, splitting doubleheaders with their opponents 10 times during the regular season. No matter the obstacle, the Pacers remained resilient and continued to fight hard, keeping their season alive into post-season play in the 2010 PBC Softball Tournament. They fell in the first round but bounced back and made a run into the semifinal elimination game, downing quality programs before finally bowing out to tournament host Francis Marion. The 2009 season proved to be Snyder’s best to date. USC Aiken concluded the 2009 campaign a program-best 12th in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 poll of 2009. The first Pacer squad to participate in the NCAA Division II Tournament, USC Aiken ended the 2009 campaign with a 34-16 record. The Pacers’ 2009 mark garnered the 2009 USC Aiken softball team the best winning percentage (.680) in program history. USC Aiken’s 34 victories in 2009 tied them for second in program history for the most wins in a single season. The

2009 Pacers also tied the school record for the fewest runs allowed (139), equal-ing the 2006 team for the fewest runs given up as a team in a single season in school history. The 2009 campaign was an incredibly special year for the Pacers with Snyder, who earned his 500th career win earlier in the year. The win was just a sign of things to come for the Pacers as they continued to embark on one of the greatest seasons in school history. After splitting with UNC Pembroke on Feb. 15 to claim that special 500th victory, USC Aiken went on to earn its first ever national ranking en route to its first ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. The second game win over UNCP led to a season-high eight-game winning streak and the stretch helped USC Aiken to claim a victory in 12 of its next 13 games to stand at 18-7 after a 4-0 win over Tusculum on March 8. The Pacers would go 13-5 the rest of the regular season to earn the second spot in the Southeast region by the start of the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Florence, S.C. The Pacers ended the year ranked in the final five NFCA polls, entering the poll for the first time in school history at No. 24 on April 8. The seventh Snyder team to claim 30 or more victories in a single season, the 2009 Pacers advanced to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game before falling to NCAA Division II softball championship semifinalist and third-ranked North Georgia. In the three seasons from 2005-07, USC Aiken compiled a 96-59 record, including a school-record 37 wins in 2007. The program has posted 20-win seasons in 16 seasons since 1994. During his time as head coach, the Lady Pacer program has had 24 All-Conference players, a Peach Belt Player of the Year, two Peach Belt Freshmen of the Year, 13 All-Region players, and an All-American.

The program has also had four players honored as CoSIDA Academic All-District selections. In the top 35 all-time for NCAA Division II coaches in career wins, Snyder was appointed to the head coaching position in 1988 shortly after being hired as an assistant coach. He became involved in softball when he was 12-years-old when his father taught him how to pitch. He went on to play for a men’s fastpitch softball team in his hometown of Short Gap, W. Va. Snyder began gaining coaching experience in recreation leagues in Aiken while he was a young man. He also

served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Augusta High School. He primarily worked with the pitchers for Beth Meyer’s Lady Jackets squad. Prior to becoming head coach at USC Aiken, Snyder worked at the Savannah River Site for EI Dupont until 1987 when he decided to return to college to get his degree. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from USC Aiken in 1991 and earned his Master’s in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy in 1995. Snyder says he has several memories and highlights from his time

at USC Aiken, but he is most proud of the accomlisments of his students in the classroom and after they have left his program. “The biggest highlight since I have been here is that my players have gradu-ated and have gone on with their lives to become successful people,” Snyder said. “You should measure your success with what your student-athletes do in the classroom, instead of what they do on the field.” Snyder and his wife Kelly have two sons, Tony and James. The Snyder family resides in Aiken, S.C.

Third Season

Erin Ward is set to enter her third season as the Pacers assistant softball coach. Her main duties at USC Aiken are as-sisting in on-field instruction and recruiting. Ward helped guide the Pacers to their first ever national ranking and NCAA Di-vision II Tournament appearance in the 2009 season. Previously, Ward was a successful 18U SC X-Treme travel softball head coach in Summerville, S.C. for three seasons. She was able to recruit highly competitive players that contributed to placing in the top-two spots in 75 percent of the tournaments in which her teams competed. Ward coached two future All-Amer-icans and saw 91 percent of her players go on to receive a softball scholarship, including five of them that came to USC Aiken. Ward was so successful that her team of 16-under won the ISA World Series held in Florence, SC in 2004. She also as-sisted in expanding the organization from one team to six. Before taking over the 18U SC X-Treme program, Ward was the head softball coach at Ashley Hall School in Charleston,

S.C. where she was responsible for the everyday operations of the team. Ward was also the head coach at the Summerville Little League in Sum-merville, S.C. where she oversaw the entire league, major and minor league teams. She was responsible for developing basic softball skills in young players. Ward played collegiate ball at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W. Va. where her team was crowned the confer-ence champions in 1996. Ward graduated from Thomas Edi-son State College in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering and technol-ogy. She completed a five-year tour of duty in the United States Navy aboard the USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) from 1997-2001.

William “Papa” Dyches enters his seventh season as a volunteer assistant coach at USC Aiken in 2010. He started help-ing Coach Snyder when his granddaughter, Ashley Dyches, was a Pacer from 2004-07. Dyches is a retiree from the Aiken County School District as the Area 1 plumber. He is the husband of Mary Ann Dyches. Dyches enjoys coaching and

Toni Flessate returns to the USC Aiken softball program this season, only this year she is a student assistant coach under the direction of head coach Jerry Snyder. A highly decorated player during her four years as a pitcher for the Pacers, Flessate earned All-Peach Belt Conference honors twice (2009 and 2010) and was named to the 2009 PBC All-Tournament team. She was also named to the Daktronics All-Region first team at the conclusion of her senior season and was named to the 2009 NFCA/NCAA Division II All-Region second team and Southeast Region All-Tournament team as a junior. A three-time PBC Pitcher of the Week, Flessate will be in charge of helping coach USC Aiken’s stable of pitchers this season, a position she knows very well from her days on the squad as by the end of her collegiate career, she had stamped her name in the top-10 in 10 different pitching catego-ries in the USC Aiken softball record book.

Currently the longest tenured coach in the Peach Belt Conference, University of South Carolina Aiken head coach Jerry Snyder will begin his 24th season at the helm of the Pacer Softball Program with aa record of 529-527 in NCAA Division II action since 1992 and an overall record of 552-550 since 1988 when the program began.

They fell in the second round after downing rival Augusta State in the first round before making a run into the semifinal elimination game, downing quality programs before finally bowing out to tournament host Francis Marion. “We were hit with a lot of adversity last year but the team handled it very well and had a good season ending run,” stated Snyder. “At the end of it all, we were knocking on the door of getting back into the regionals. I was very proud of our team down the stretch.” One of the brightest spots for USC Aiken over the last four seasons was the development of dual threat Toni Flessate who proved dangerous to the Pacers’ opposition with both her pitching and her bat. In her time with the program, she stamped her name into the record books earning top-10 spots in 10 different pitching categories. The Pacers will most likely have to look to multiple players to replace the two-time All-PBC selection and 2009 All-Region member not just in the circle, but also at the plate if they wish to keep pace in 2011 and into the future. “It is hard to replace a player like Toni,” mused Snyder, “but I feel like we have assembled both an excellent pitching staff, as well as some solid bats, who can contribute to filling the void this season.” In 2011, USC Aiken’s squad will be comprised of a good mixture of experienced veterans, solid transfers and strong freshmen who will all look to make an impact from the first pitch in the spring after already hitting the diamond for several weekend tournaments in the fall. The USC Aiken softball team

concluded its 2010 fall softball campaign with an impressive 7-1 record that was accentuated by a thrilling victory over the University of South Carolina in Columbia. “I feel very confident that this year’s team will be very successful,” stated Snyder. “I think getting some experience will be a key factor in our success and we should improve as the season pro-gresses, which is the perfect scenario.”PITCHERS At the outset of the spring 2010 season, the Pacers’ pitching stable looked to be as stout as any in the league until sophomore hurler Lauren Rickabaugh’s season was cut short due to an injury. Rickabaugh (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) is back in 2011 and is continuing to get better and stronger as she hopes to pick up where she left off last season. After struggling at times with just two pitchers for the rest of the season in 2010, USC Aiken’s stable has more depth this year as Snyder and the Pacers add three new arms to the fold. “I am more excited about this year’s pitching staff than any other staff I have coached,” mused Snyder. “We brought in three quality pitchers to help us get back to regionals.” The three newcomers, highly-deco-rated junior college transfer Kylee Knop (Oxford, Ga./Kirkwood CC) and two solid

freshmen, Samantha Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) and India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) will look to compete fiercely with Rickabaugh for time in the circle for the Pacers in 2011. Both Kornegay and Lemm were strong high school pitchers in their respective states while Knop proved to be a solid pitcher in the junior college ranks. Kornegay and Knop each have the ability to throw a variety of pitches in the mid to upper 60’s and will push each other for the top hurling spot. “Those three added with a stronger Rickabaugh will give us lots of options in 2011,” said Snyder.CATCHERS Good pitchers require just as stout catchers on the receiving end, and the Pacers will have just that as they return Nicole Borden and welcome two new-comers at the backstop position. Borden (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) gained valuable experience as a true freshman last season, but two freshmen, Hillary Stewart (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) and Carly Hudson (Fountain Inn, S.C./St. Joseph’s Catholic), will push her for playing time both on defense and at the plate.

“I believe our two new catchers will push Nicole a lot this year, and give us a strong catching corps along with power in our offensive lineup,” said Snyder.INFIELD USC Aiken’s entire infield four return in 2011 to supply the Pacers with a solid defensive anchor as well as four solid bats. “Our infield is the heart and soul of our defense and I believe it is the best infield in the entire PBC,” Snyder mused. “They have the most combined experi-ence as a group on the team and will prove to be invaluable to our success this season.” The quartet is highlighted by senior shortstop and two-time All-PBC selection Lauren Locklear (Charleston, S.C./Wando) and junior second baseman Whitney Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS) on the interior. The corners will once again be patrolled by senior Blair Warren (Darlington, S.C./Florence-Darlington Tech) at first base and 2010 PBC All-Tournament member Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) at third. Add to the starting four senior Lydia Miles (Ridgeland, S.C./Thomas Heyward Academy) and redshirt-freshman Kristian Pickrel (Pamplico, S.C./Hannah Pamplico) who will both strive to earn playing time, and Snyder believes his infield “will be rock solid.”OUTFIELD The outfield will prove to be the biggest question for the Pacers in 2011 as they have two open positions with the return of sophomore Brandy Bossle (North East, Md./Rising Sun) who moved to right field during the fall campaign, but Snyder feels that between two veterans and two newcomers to try to fill the spots in center and left field, the outfield has the potential to be very strong. “Our outfield should be very strong this season with our two newcomers

mixed in with moving some personnel around,” Snyder stated. Junior transfer Kayla Denham (Palatka, Fla./Daytona State) patrolled center field for the Pacers during the 2010 fall slate and 2010 PBC All-Tournament selection Kelley King (Chesterfield, S.C./Chesterfield) will move to left field from the designated player position she held last season for the Pacers. Newcomer Brittney Williamson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) and returning sophomore Haley Justice (North Augusta, S.C./Midland Valley) will both also see time in the field as Snyder uses all his assets to obtain success. The youthful and richly talented group will look to build on the successes from the previous seasons including seven 30-win seasons (1997, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2009) in hopes of seeing gains on the field in 2011 and beyond. “We need to finish in the top-three of the PBC and make it back to the South Atlantic Regionals, stated Snyder, “be-cause after making it there in 2009, we cannot settle for anything less. I believe we should be a force to be reckoned with this season.”

The 2010 University of South Carolina Aiken softball team fell just short of their expectations after ending the 2009 campaign with the program’s first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Tournament. Despite not obtaining a repeat trip to the NCAA Tournament, head coach Jerry Snyder was proud of the way his team battled throughout the season. “We were hit with a lot of adver-sity last year but the team handled it very well and had a good season ending run,” stated Snyder. “At the end of it all, we were knocking on the door of getting back into the regionals. I was very proud of our team down the stretch.” The season started off slow as the Pacers endured a slue of inclement weather cancellations, but once they got rolling, Snyder’s team showed flashes of brilliance despite struggling at times on both sides of the ball, splitting doubleheaders with their opponents 10 times during the regular season. Mother Nature was not the only force the Pacers had to contend

with as USC Aiken had to work much of the season without two key players who went down for medical reasons. Both pitcher Lauren Rickabaugh (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) and outfielder Jennifer Day looked to be ready to help lead the team in 2010 before their seasons were cut short. No matter the obstacle, the Pacers remained resilient and continued to fight hard, keeping their season alive into post-season play in the 2010 PBC Softball Tournament. They stumbled in the second round but bounced back and made a run into the semifinal elimination game, downing quality programs, before finally bowing out to tournament host Francis Marion. “When it was all said and done, we were still there knocking on the door for another trip to Regionals,” mused Snyder. For their hard work on the field, four Pacers earned post-season accolades as senior Toni Flessate, junior Lauren Locklear (Charleston, S.C./Wando) and freshman Kelley King (Chesterfield, S.C./Chesterfield) were named All-Peach

Belt Conference selections. King also joined fellow freshman Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) as members of the PBC All-Tournament team while Flessate ended her prolific Pacer career by being named to the Daktronics All-Region First Team. One of the brightest spots for USC Aiken over the last four seasons was the development of dual threat Flessate who proved dangerous to the Pacers’ opposition with both her pitching and her bat. In her time with the program, she stamped her name into the record books earning top-10 spots in 10 different pitching categories. The Pacers will most likely have to look to multiple players to replace the two-time All-PBC and two-time All-Region selection not just in the circle, but also at the plate. Despite having to replace Flessate and two other seniors, the Pacer Softball Program’s future is bright and they will look to continue to be successful after claiming their seventh season in a row and 16th overall with at least 20 wins.
