Located on the western side of the Wayland campus, Hutcherson Center is a 3000-seat facility named in honor of the late Claude E. Hutcherson.

“The Hutch” officially opened on November 20, 1971, with a doubleheader basketball game that resulted in the Flying Queens beating Temple Junior College, 61-25, and the Pioneers defeating the College of Santa Fe by an 83-73 margin.

The building hosted its first intercollegiate volleyball match on September 24, 1991, when the Pioneers defeated Howard Payne University, 3-2.

The home of WBU’s athletic offices, Hutcherson Center has undergone major renovations to its outer facade, lobby and concession areas in the past few years. Two new state-of-the-art scoreboards were also purchased, an expanded training room has been added, and most recently new courtside bleachers have been installed.

Head Coach Jim Giacomazzi

Jim Giacomazzi has manufactured a complete turn around in his four seasons at the helm of the Pioneer volleyball program.

In 2007, the Pioneers recorded their first winning season in nine years (23-17) and qualified for the NAIA Region VI Tournament for the first time in four years. Four new season records were established and five Pioneers received post-season honors.

The 2008 WBU netters won the program’s first-ever Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and achieved the second-best record

(26-8) in school history.

Last fall, the Pioneers reach-ed 20 wins for the fourth con-secutive season with a 21-9 mark and reached the SAC Tournament finals for the second time in three years. Giacomazzi also picked up his 200th career victory in 2010.

Giacomazzi moved to the Texas Panhandle in 1991 to take over as head volleyball coach at West Texas A&M University. He led the Lady Buffs to a 36-2 record that year and a NCAA Division II National Championship. He followed that up with a 30-11 record and a third place finish in the NCAA Elite 8 Tournament in 1992.

The following year he founded the Crown of Texas Volleyball Club, a highly successful organization which remains active today and of which he is director.

A member of the Professional Association of Volleyball Officials and the Panhandle Area Board of Officials, as well as the American Volleyball Coaches Association, Giacomazzi is a graduate of Azusa Pacific University.

He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Education and Biblical Educa-tion and a Master’s in Education from APU. He played professional baseball in the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres organizations from 1981 to 1983 before turning to coaching. He served as head volleyball coach at Oral Roberts Univer-sity and at the University of Nevada-Re-no, prior to moving to Canyon.

Giacomazzi and his wife, Trish, a principal for the Hereford Independent School District, have three children: Chris, Nick, and Natasha.

Wayland Baptist University

With its first centennial celebration just wrapped up, Wayland Baptist University ends a year that paid homage to a rich heritage while pointing to a bright future.

As year 102 begins, Wayland continues to expand its offerings with the first fully online bachelor’s degree launching with the Fall 2009 term. The Bachelor of Applied Science degree – with majors in business, human services, justice administration, religion, management and applied science – appeals heavily to the adult students in the Wayland system since it provides degree completion opportunities both face-to-face and online for more convenience in reaching their educational goals.

Outside of the Plainview campus, enrollment continues to grow on the 12 external campuses in the Wayland system, where adult students pursue their education while working full-time jobs or serving their country on one of our many military installations. This fall, WBU added a teaching site at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla., under the auspices of the Altus (Okla.) campus. The teaching site in Tucson, Ariz., continues to grow, and the university constantly explores other opportunities to take its special program and people into new avenues.

Recent events have also affirmed Wayland’s academic strength, with a clean reaccreditation review from the Commission on College of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Schools of Music. Similar accreditation is expected in 2009 from the National League of Nurses Accreditation Commission now that the first class of the School of Nursing has graduated.

With all this progress, though, Wayland has stayed true to its mission of providing students with knowledge and hands-on experiences to serve others in Plainview and

world. Through the Wayland Missions Center, dozens of students engaged in mission trips and summer missions endeavors.

Through these experiences, students are gaining valuable experience in being Christ’s hands and feet around the world. They’re also returning to the Wayland campus as young adults with a new purpose, a clearer understanding of the Gospel and its power and a renewed vigor for service. Missions is truly changing our world one student at a time.

These are exciting times for Wayland as we face challenges of a new day in higher education while remaining true to the mission of faith-based efforts to educate people of all ages and prepare them for God’s work in the world.

Other Athletic Facilities

The Pete & Nelda Laney Student Activities Center is located on the west side of the campus just east of Hutcherson Center. The 50,000-square foot structure includes the Wayne Evans Gymnasium and the James & Eva Mayer Student Lounge.

The massive gymnasium contains a regulation-size basketball court complete with fold-up bleacher seating and electronic scoreboards. The area can also be converted into double courts.

The lower level also includes full locker rooms with showers and dressing areas for men and women.

Upstairs, the elevated indoor running track circles the gym, bordered by several classrooms that are used for physical education courses, and the cardiac/strength center with treadmills, elliptical machines, Nautilus weight machines, rowers and a 25-foot climbing wall. An aerobics room with wood floors will accommodate Pilates, yoga and aerobics classes offered at Wayland.

The lounge area features a large projection television for student entertainment, pool tables, ping pong tables, and chairs and tables for the snack bar area.

J.V. Hilliard field is one of the most unique stadiums in the area. The 1,000-seat bowl type facility located just north of Hutcherson Center is actually below ground level, providing a useful and functional windbreak for West Texas winds. Completed in 1964 as a home for the Pioneer track and field teams, the stadium was originally known as the Wayland Bowl, but was renamed Hilliard Field in 1981 to honor Wayland’s first track coach and the driving force behind the construction of the stadium.

Now the home to both the Pioneer track and field teams and the WBU soccer teams, Hilliard Field received a major facelift during the summer of 2009. The track surface received a complete overhaul, the soccer field was completely reseeded, and the press box, storage rooms and restrooms were painted and refurbished.

Just outside and to the west of the bowl area, a new fence was constructed, enclosing a new practice soccer field and the shot put and discus pits.

Dedicated in the spring of 1999, David & Myrt Wilder Field is the home of the Wayland Pioneer Baseball program and is one of the premiere facilities in the region. It features covered seating for 810, a full press box, inning-by-inning scoreboard, and attached practice infield. Restrooms, concessions, picnic plaza and a first-class sound system add to the baseball experience for visitors.

The playing field is grass. The outfield fence measures 325 feet down the right- and left-field lines and 395 at the center field fence. In the evenings, the Pioneers play under eight 100’ light poles that encompass the baseball field.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the

overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the

character-building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an

environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit

of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and

sportsmanship. The NAIA Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of

character values in sport, and provide student-athletes, coaches and parents the training to help them

know the right thing, do the right thing and value the right thing inside and outside the sports setting.
