Governors try to take care of details

PIERRE — The Lady Governors might lack a little height. Perhaps they’re a little young. Maybe they’re a little unsure of what they’re capable of.

But they’re hungry. They’re athletic. And they’re more experienced at the var-sity level than most players their age.

“We’re building upon last year. I felt we had a lot of young kids that got crucial experience. We didn’t get the wins in the win column, but we got the experience and this year we need to take that experi-ence to the next level,” coach Lisa Bahe said.

Last season was a grind that saw the Lady Govs go 0-22. But strong teams don’t forget about tough seasons, they learn from them. They don’t quit, they bounce back and compete.

“I think our goals are a lot higher than they were last year because we know what it’s like to go through a rough time,” junior Micah Palmer said.

Are the Lady Govs prepared to reach those goals? We’ll find out. When the players were asked about how practice was going, the phrases “hard conditioning” and “intense” popped up. True cagers will like the sound of that.

Having a team of two- and three-sport athletes will help as well.

“Our athleticism can be a tool once we find out what we’re capable of doing. That will probably be the biggest thing to find out what we can do,” Bahe said.

It’s possible to have youth and experi-ence. Getting the junior-led team to play like the seniors they are missing will be the key.

“I think a lot of times we hold back a little bit because of our youth, unsure

of what we’re capable of,” Bahe said.

A n o t h e r key to suc-cess will be building on the cohe-sion many of the players already have together.

“ W e ’ v e all played together a long time,” Palmer said refer-ring to the eight juniors on the team.

Many of the players have been in the Pierre system together for years. Both players and coaches are aware of the advantages that consistency can bring.

“We have some juniors that have been in our system for years and those are the

strengths that I think we can use because those are still pretty young kids and they have the experience,” Bahe said.

Familiarity with each other will help, but improving individual and team skills will be just as important, especially as the juniors mentor the sophomores and freshman who’ll play a role in the team’s success.

But how will the Lady Govs compen-sate for their slight lack of height?

“Quickness and speed,” junior Taylor Hyde said.

That may be. After all, it’s easier to get faster than taller in three months.

Like every year, expectations are to play hard, get better and compete. This team will do that, maybe even a little more.

“I think once our kids find out they can come out and surprise people, they’ll maybe even surprise themselves a bit,” Bahe said.

PIERRE — In order for the Pierre boys’ basketball team to contend for an Eastern South Dakota title, they are going to have to take care of the details.

The Governors made it back to the state tournament last year and in order for Pierre to take another step forward this season, the details are the key.

“If we stay focused on what we are doing, we’ve got the talent there to have a great season,” Pierre head coach Terry Becker said. “It’s a matter of us taking care of all the little things. We figured out last year in a hurry that if we took care of the details on the defensive and offensive end, then things started to fall our way.

“If we came into this season with that same mind-set, the wins will come our way. That’s a byproduct of everything — getting wins and having success in the postseason and getting deep into the state tournament. … That’s a long ways off, that’s like a million miles away for us right now. We’re just trying to get ourselves focused for this first game.”

One of the strengths for the Governors will be their size. Zach Hanson, at 6’9”, and Joe Tetzlaff, a 6’8”

senior, will anchor the front court for Pierre but the Govs are big as well in the backcourt. Lane Severyn is listed at 6’5” with six other listed at 6’0” or taller.

“We’ve got Joe and Zach and we’ve got some other front line players that will add some depth,” Becker said. “Nate Buscher is a senior kid that’s about 6’4” that will give us some depth. If we can get a few of our young kids to come a long, we’re going to be even bet-ter in the front court with those guys.

“What I like is we have length and length that can play different positions, that’s going to be an advantage for us. We don’t have guys that can only play one spot. We’ll be able to put some matchups that will be dif-ficult for opponents.

One area the Govs may struggle with early on is the guard play. Besides Severyn, Pierre has little expe-rience at the guards. Gone are Terelle Walker and Travis Adney, who steadied the backcourt as seniors a year ago. In their place are juniors Matt Monfore and Carson Eisenbeisz and sophomores Garrett Pochop, Austin Christopherson and Conrad Adam.

“What I like is we have a little more versatility, a little more depth at guard,” Becker said. “Last year we only had a few guards, we graduated two of them but some of these younger guys coming up kind of give us

some more versatility to do some different things.

“They’ve played enough basketball that once they get their feet wet, I think they are going to be just fine.”

One thing that will help offset the youth in the backcourt is the experience of players such as Tetzlaff, Hanson, Severyn and Connor Berg. Those four saw significant time in the rebuilding process the last few years for the Governors, which should help steady the younger kids.

“Some of these guys that are kind of are savvy veter-ans now, that are juniors and seniors, have 45-50 games under their belt,” Becker said. “That’s where they were a year or two ago.

“The beauty of this is that the younger kids we are bringing up, we’re not going to have to throw them in the fire nearly as deep as those other guys we had to depend on so much when they were freshman and sophomores.”

Experience leads Pierre grapplers

Lady Gov gymnasts return strong core

PIERRE — With a strong returning contingent from a fourth-place finish a year ago, expectations are high in the Pierre wrestling room.

Anchored by returning state champion Tanner Monfore, the Governors return 10 wrestlers from a year ago.

“We’re sitting with a nice mix of youth and experi-ence,” Pierre head coach Ryan Noyes said. “We’ve got seven kids in the lineup that have placed in the state tournament, plus we’ve got a few other kids that will finish strong for us this year.”

Joining Monfore as state place winners from the 2010-2011 season are Caleb Stoltenburg, fourth at 119; Kyle Sarringar, sixth at 145 pounds; Chase Lettau, fourth at 160 pounds; Trey Maier, eighth at 171; and Lane Lettau, seventh at 189. Aaron O’Day placed seventh at 112 pounds as an eighth grader. The other returners from last year include Jebben Keyes, Dawson Monfore, Seth Scott and Dylan Bennet.

“Pretty much all the guys in our varsity lineup will

have a decent shot this year,” Noyes said. “We will have a couple young kids wrestling at 113 and 120, but goals just change a little bit for them. We talk about winning matches and getting better each week. As a team we are hoping to finish in the top half of the state this year.”

Monfore will be one of the leaders for the Govs on the mat this year. After posting a 30-3 record at 112 pounds last season, Monfore moves up to 126 pounds. Despite being a returning state champion, Noyes doesn’t think there is any additional pressure on the sophomore.

“It’s just kind of how Tanner is, he’s not going to cut much weight, he’s going to lift to get big,” Noyes said. “He’s just going to go out and compete, have fun and let the chips fall where they may.”

A wrestler with high expectations this season is Maier. Moving up to 195 pounds this season, Maier won the Monster Match in Denver during the offsea-son and Noyes thinks Maier can bring home a state title for the Govs.

“I think Trey can win it, but it comes down to what Trey thinks he can do,” Noyes said. “The good thing is

Trey thinks the same thing. That’s kind of the goal is to win the state tournament. There are definitely some big obstacles in his way, but I believe Trey can do it so we will wait and see what February brings.”

The Govs are one of the favorite to claim the Eastern South Dakota conference title but Noyes knows it’s not going to be easy. Mitchell, Aberdeen Central and Huron will challenge Pierre for the crown.

“Mitchell, Aberdeen and Huron, those guys are so good,” Noyes said. “Year after year, they are good. People are just reloading, too.

“It’s definitely the goal to win it. Our team goal is to win the state tournament. Every one of the kids listed that on their goal sheet. ESD is tough but we definitely want to win it and we want to win the state tournament, too.”

PIERRE — The success of the Pierre gymnastics team will come down to one thing — health.

Cheyna Lodge didn’t compete in a triangular at the beginning of the season, Shelby Spelbring hurt her shoulder towards the end of the com-petitive cheer season and Jessica Bullard had surgery on her wrist.

“When we have the full squad back, it’s amazing,” Pierre head coach Nicki Abels said. “It’s a deep varsity, we just need to bring up their experience a little bit.

“Huron was one of our lowest scores, but to me it was kind of exciting to see

these younger girls that I have put on to varsity for the first time. They didn’t freak out, I personally thought they did a great job, they had a great attitude and were excited to be there. That says a lot.”

Filling in for the Lady Governors until they get healthy will be Shaina Seidel, Dani UIlman, Alayna Snyder and Sidney Bechtold, who are all middle schoolers. Even though some of the more experienced gymnasts may be out due to injuries, they are still helping fine tune the younger gymnasts’ skill sets.

“Seeing those older girls, those girls are helping in ways of leading these newer, younger varsity girls that I’m just pulling up,” Abels said.

“Those four are having great experi-ence just by the leadership by these other girls.”

There is a new format for qualify-ing for the state meet this year. Gone

is the region meet and Pierre will now compete in the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet.

“This year, they are doing everything different,” Abels said. “We aren’t going to be having a region, they are doing ESD, that’s going to determine who on your squad is going to qualify for state. My goal for each one of my girls, espe-cially my returning varsity, is for them to each qualify individually for state.

A year ago, the Lady Governors fin-ished in eighth at the state meet with a score of 132.810, this year, when healthy Abels thinks the team can score a 138, which would have put them in fifth a year ago. Watertown is the favorite to repeat as state champions for the fourth-straight year.

“If we are all healthy, these girls can be pulling 138, easy,” Abels said. “They have the potential to do it.

“If we can score in the top-four in ESD, I will be excited b e c a u s e that has been com-b i n e d now with Brookings, Watertown; it ’s just a whole new d i v i s i o n . State meet, honestly if we can fin-ish in the top-six, that will be amazing.”

By Chris MaNgaNCapital Journal staff “If we are all

healthy, these girls can be pulling 138,

easy. If we can score in the top-four in ESD I will be ex-cited because that

has been combined now with Brookings, Watertown; it’s just

a whole new division .”

Oahe tries to reload in new season

PIERRE — When the first puck of the 2011-12 season drops, will the defending state champion Oahe Capitals be ready to defend their title?

Absolutely. But will it be easy? No, it never is. Especially in a 10-team

league that features perennial power-house Brookings and the return of Sioux Falls to the league.

However, everyone learned last year not to count the Capitals out. And their goals haven’t changed.

“You go into every season with the idea of winning the league and the state championship. Luckily enough, we were successful at that last year,” coach Rob Kittay said. “But this year we’re starting a little farther back then we’d want to be and we’ll just have to keep working and improving.”

T h e C a p i t a l s return a young team that lost 10 seniors from last year’s squad that went 22-1-1 and took home the pro-gram’s first champion-ship.

“ W e ’ r e going to be a pretty young team this year,” junior for-ward Austin Wagner said. “So we’re hop-ing to build and get better as the season

goes on and hopefully make a run at the state tournament.”

Hard work and constant improvement will be common themes of this year’s team. The Capitals have already hit the ice skating, so to speak, through exhibi-tion games and practice.

“There’s a lot of enthusiasm out there and practice attendance is really good. Attendance was also good at our dry-land sessions and I think they know that if they work hard enough, it’s possible for it to happen in Pierre to win the league title and state championship,” said Kittay.

The Capitals will look to utilize their current strengths.

“I think we’re going to be a really phys-ical team this year that tries to wear the other team down and get goals in front of the net,” senior defensemen James Gilkerson said.

Because of their youth, the Capitals will look to hone their overall team defense.

Kyle Mammenga and Alex Meagher will defend the net.

“I think the goaltending has been really good, I don’t have any complaints. Although as a team we need to play bet-ter defense,” Kittay said.

The cliché “defense wins champion-ships” is an oversimplification. But with a team that lost many of its leading scorers from last year, defensive improvement will be necessary for the Capitals to stay in games.

If the Capitals goalies face 50 shots a game, it’s going to be a long year. But if the Capitals can spend a fair share of their time in the attacking zone, they should hang with most teams.

When they took the ice Dec. 3 in Brookings, the reset button was pushed on the state championship title. This team will have to make their own way, and it won’t be easy. But as last year’s team proved, it can happen in Pierre.

Lady Caps ready to challenge BrookingsPIERRE — Call them the “Sweet 19.” Ok, admit-

tedly it ’s not as poetic as “16” and lacks a little allit-eration, but every team needs an identity. Right?

Except on the ice they’re not so sweet. They skate fast. They knock people down, a lot. I’m pretty sure they smile while doing this, too.

And off the ice, they don’t always like talking to a nosy reporter.

All of which leads me to believe we’ve got ourselves a good hockey team here. Seriously.

How sweet could it be? Well, if you consider the team’s third place run at last year’s state tournament and the return of most of its seniors, pretty sweet.

“I think we can really do well at the state tourna-ment and I think we definitely have a good chance of bringing it home. That’s the goal of the team,” coach Christine Hockett said.

The 2011-2012 campaign will be Hockett’s first as head coach of the Lady Caps, but she’s anything but a hockey rookie.

“I started playing when I was in the sixth grade in Brookings and played with the Rangers boys’ team through ban-tams before I moved over to a girls’ team in high school,” Hockett said.

Hockett went on to play club hockey at SDSU and coached the Brookings Y-12 and var-sity girls hockey teams while in college. With that background, the Lady Caps should be in good hands.

The Lady Caps squad will be a mix of players from sixth-graders to seniors. Six girls will play varsity and six girls will play junior varsity. Another six will float between the two squads as needed. A goalie makes 19 and the team is set.

“As far as varsity goes, we have quite a few girls returning from last year though we did lose four or

five girls,“ Hockett said. The team will have a variety of veteran skill and

raw talent. Putting that together will be the key. “I think everybody wants to get better at skating,

shooting and basically everything,” said Gabrielle Vizcarra.

Improvement should come as the lines are pieced together and the veterans become familiar with the new players.

“The majority of the team returned from last year, but we also have new skaters that haven’t skated prior to this year,” Hockett said.

If the veterans can hold the line and integrate the up-and-comers into both the offense and defense, the Lady Caps could be a team to reckon with come tournament time.

The road to the state championship often goes through coach Hockett ’s alma mater Brookings, something the Lady Caps are well aware of.

“I think that everybody wants to beat Brookings. They’re a team that we almost got last year. We were this close,” Megan Johnson said.

Beating Brookings, ah, now that would be sweet.

Buffs look to get physical on the hardwood

Lady Buffaloes hope to start fresh

FORT PIERRE — Stability is some-thing that has not been present when it comes to the Stanley County boys’ bas-ketball program.

Stanley County hopes that its third coach in as many years can finally bring that stability as Adam Spoehr is looking to restore the excellent play which we have seen in the past from the Buffaloes.

Spoehr is a great fit in Stanley County thanks to his position of assistant coach for the Buffaloes last season. Spoehr is preaching to his team that physicality will be a key factor for the team’s success in 2011-2012.

“We want to play a physical style of play, we don’t want to back down from anyone,” Spoehr said. “We might not be the biggest, we might not be the stron-gest but we are going to out hustle and be more physical than other teams.”

Physical play is a start but for this sea-son’s Buffs to compete they must improve their offense. On their way to a 6-14 season, Stanley County could not find consistent offense. Spoehr , a Wisconsin native, is hoping an offense that comes from his home state cures the Stanley County offensive woes.

“We plan on running the Bo Ryan swing offense ran at the University of Wisconsin. We need to take care of the ball and just put the ball in the hole. We struggled to score last year and we need to work on bumping our scoring average up,” Spoehr said.

The swing offense should help increase the number of buckets Stanley County accumulates but the team still must fill the void that the six seniors from the 2010-201. To do this, Spoehr will depend on a balanced group of players who can contribute in a variety of ways.

“One of our key players is Cody Heckenlaible, he’s a 6’2” combo guard.

He can play inside and outside for us and has stepped up and taken a leadership role. Austin L o p o u r brings us physicality and great d e f e n s e , ” Spoehr explained. “Latrell LaRoche is probably our best overall player, he can do a little bit of everything and we look to feature him.”

Heckenlaible, Lopour and LaRoche will obviously play a major hand in Stanley County’s success, the Buffaloes will also need contributions from play-ers Spoehr is familiar with after his time coaching the junior varsity team in 2010-2011.

“I’m expecting a lot from juniors Brady Washecheck and Tucker Fischbach, they played two years for me on JV so they know the system and know what to do and what not to do,” Spoehr said.

Perhaps the most encouraging sign in the preseason for the Buffaloes is the leadership which the upperclassmen have brought. Spoehr has been very pleased with this aspect of the early season.

“Something we lacked last year was vocal leadership, this season our seniors are being very vocal and doing a lot of coaching. They are bringing a lot of enthusiasm in addition to leadership, which is something we need in this pro-gram,” Spoehr said.

The Buffaloes seem to have all of the pieces necessary to turn the program around and get the bad taste out of the school’s mouth from the six-win cam-paign last year. The Buffaloes will begin their journey to do so on Saturday when they host Bennett County at 4 p.m.

FORT PIERRE — To say the 2010-2011 season was a disappointment for the Stanley County Lady Buffs basketball team is an understatement, now Stanley County looks to erase the memories of that season and compete like the program has throughout its history.

The Lady Buffs of 2010-2011 finished with a record of 4-17 and were dismantled in the first round of the district tournament by Mobridge-Pollock by 49 points, far from the norm for Stanley County girls’ basketball.

The good news for the Lady Buffs is they return all but three players to the team, giving the team a solid group of players who have experience and are hungry to resolve the struggles of last season.

While the Lady Buffs return many players, the team will be far from the same as they will have a new head coach. Rob Ingalls will take over the task of restoring Stanley County’s rich basketball tradition.

“This is my first year with this group of girls, I wasn’t here for last season so we are just trying to start fresh,” Ingalls said. “We are keeping some of the same prin-ciples we’ve had in the past in terms of the legacy of Stanley County basketball.”

One of those principals which Stanley County must focus on is defense. Stanley County’s defensive defi-ciencies were exposed last season, especially in its season ending loss to Mobridge-Pollock as the Lady Buffs allowed 87 points.

“We want to make sure we are very tenacious and aggressive on defense, we don’t want to give up any easy shots in the lane. We have to be very active,” Ingalls said.

In addition to stellar defense the Buffaloes will depend on a nice balance of experience and youth to build a complete team. While each player is important, perhaps none are more valuable than Tory Deal.

Deal, a 2011 All Big Dakota Conference team selec-tion, will need to continue the play at a high level for

the Lady Buffs to be successful. “Tory is one of the leaders of the team and she’s

going to have to step up and make sure that she’s doing everything she can for us. She’s going to have to score, distribute and even get in there and rebound for us,” Ingalls said.

Although Deal will lead the Lady Buffs, the team is far from a one woman show. Kelly Sweetman and Madison Hand will also be key factors for Stanley County.

“Kelly is one of our taller girls but is very good at handling the ball. She has outstanding shooting abil-ity too so she will do a lot of things for us,” Ingalls said. “We also have Madison Hand; she will be a great combo guard for us. She has great shooting and under-stands defensive principles.”

With Deal, Sweetman, Hand and other talented players, the Lady Buffs certainly have all of the tools to right the wrongs of the 2010-2011 season and restore the legacy of Stanley County basketball.

Buffaloes return several place winners on the mat

SC gymnastics aim high in 2011-2012

FORT PIERRE — After a stellar sev-enth-place finish at state in 2011, the Stanley County Lady Buffs gymnasts are looking to exceed last season’s perfor-mance during the 2011-2012 campaign.

The Lady Buffs must now put the strong season behind them and look for-ward to the new season, with nearly the same group of gymnasts looking to con-tinue the program’s success. The Lady Buffs lone departure, Kenna Wieczorek, was a key part of the 2010-2011 squad and the Lady Buffs will not have an easy time replacing her.

Wieczorek wasn’t the only departure from the gymnastics program; coach Jodi Gabriel is also no longer with the team.

Stanley County will now be led by Hilary Hanson.

Hanson certainly has the gymnastics background to lead the Lady Buffs above and beyond their 2010-2011 season. Hanson was a gymnast in her hometown of Pierre since she was just 5-years-old and expects the Lady Buffs to top last season.

“Our outlook for the season is to improve upon their last season and help the girls advance individually and as a team,” Hanson said. “We want to have positive attitudes and focus on each of them doing their best.”

Although the Lady Buffs only lost one senior from the 2010-2011 season, the Lady Buffs are still very young and lack experience in some areas. Hanson hopes the team’s leaders help the younger Buffs

overcome their inexperience.“Each of the girls are key to the team,

we have three girls who are very experi-enced. That will really help out as many of our girls don’t have much experience,” Hanson said. “I will be looking for our older girls to take the lead role.”

One of the elder Buffaloes needed to bring both leadership and performance to the team is senior Shelby Gienger. Gienger, a standout in volleyball, gymnas-tics and track, is arguably the best athlete Stanley County has to offer and her per-formance this season could be what puts the Lady Buffs over the edge.

“Shelby is our senior and has shown great leadership for our younger girls already. She sets an example of what is expected in the gym and she is a very good role model for all of the girls,” Hanson

said.Gienger and the rest of the Lady Buffs

set a nice tone for the season in their opening contest in a triangular with Pierre and Huron. Gienger finished first in the all-around competition and the rest of the Lady Buffs followed her lead and earned a solid score. The strong effort is evidence that the Lady Buffs have the potential to make some noise at state once again.

“I look for our girls to advance and really show off their skills, I think if we stay injury free and focus on having clean routines then we should finish well at state,” Hanson said.

Like most of Stanley County’s athlet-ics, the 2011-2012 season marks a year of change for the gymnastics program. Despite that change, expect the gymnasts to make their mark this season.

Lady BuffaLoes try to exceed seventh-pLace finish a year ago

FORT PIERRE — For the Stanley County wrestling program the expectations are clear, anything short of a strong showing at state is viewed as a disappointment.

The goals in 2011-2012 are no different for the Buffaloes but like many of their fellow teams in Fort Pierre, the Buffaloes will have a new coach for this campaign.

The Buffalo grapplers will now be led by John Latham. Latham served as an assistant coach for the Buffaloes last season and he inherits a talented group of kids ready to make a run in the state tournament.

“We have a lot of returning state qualifiers on the team this year, that experience should help them” Latham said. “We look for Cody LaCompte to run deep into the year, as with Thomas Tolton, Michael Scott and Lukas Chase. All of those guys were at the state tournament last year and we look for them to do the same.”

The Buffaloes will have some up and coming wres-tlers burst onto the scene during the 2011-2012 season

in addition to the veterans. One of which is Daniel Slama.

“This will be Daniel Slama’s first year on varsity as an eighth grader. He’s wrestling well right now, other than that we don’t have any surprises,” Latham said.

One advantage Slama will have in his rookie season on varsity is the examples set by Stanley County’s three seniors. LaCompte, Tolton and Chantry Norman all bring elements of leadership which Slama and the rest of the younger Buffs can mimic.

“All three of our seniors have state tournament expe-rience, which is invaluable to our kids. Cody is a very athletic kid, Thomas is a hard worker and Chantry has a motor that never stops. All three of those things are important elements for our kids,” Latham said.

The Buffaloes also have the advantage of intensity in practices thanks to several battles at weight classes. Latham feels these battles will give his wrestlers big match experience needed to succeed in meets.

“The extra matches, even if the same kid wins every week, really adds to our experience at the end of the year,” Latham said.

With the ultimate goal being a strong showing

at the state tournament, Latham is preaching to the Buffaloes consistent improvement, in hopes that the Buffs will peak at the right time.

“Our biggest goal is to improve every week. If we can fix what we do wrong each week, we should be where we need to be at the end of the year,” Latham said.

The Buffaloes feature a very talented team which has been shown by the team’s quick start to begin the season. If the Buffaloes improve as Latham hopes, they should make a major impact come state tour-nament time.

11 White takes over for Sully Buttes

ONIDA — It may be a new era for the Sully Buttes boys’ basketball team but the goal remains the same — making the state tournament.

Brian White takes over Mike Lodmel on the bench for the Chargers and he inherits a young squad. Sully Buttes has five seniors on its squad, the remaining nine players are sophomores or younger — five of whom are freshman. With the young squad, White

knows there will be some grow-ing pains along the way but come district and region time, he hopes the Chargers will be hitting their stride.

“I can see the beginning of the year being very difficult for us,” White said. “We play some great competition in James Valley Christian, Mobridge, we have some really tough teams early on that are really going to challenge us.

“We’ll find out where we are early, that will be a good thing for us. I expect to see us improve dras-

tically as the season progresses.”The seniors that do return for

Sully Buttes will play a big role in the success of the Chargers this season. Jalen and Jordan Lamb will provide some needed experience for Sully Buttes and Conner Uhlir returns after playing for Kadoka last year.

“I think if we get some guys that are willing to do their job and fill some roles and have fun playing basketball, I think we can have a very successful year,” White said.

Under Lodmel, the Chargers

were more of a structured offense but White is implanting a run-and-gun offense that will see Sully Buttes get out a run as much as possible.

“They’ve been more of a struc-tured team in the past offensively,” White said. “They really haven’t gotten out and run like we want to this year. A few of the kids, it’s taken them a little bit to figure out the pace I want to play at.”

The inexperience of the Chargers also extends to the bench and the heading coaching position. White

hasn’t coached at the varsity level but the former Aberdeen Central standout has always wanted to do coach and is looking forward to taking over for such a tradition-rich program.

“This is something I’ve always wanted, this is something I feel very prepared for,” White said. “I had great coaches in the past that have prepared me for this opportu-nity. I’m going to relish the oppor-tunity and we are going to work hard and look to make this com-munity proud.”

ONIDA — After failing to qual-ify for the state tournament in the 2010-2011 season, the Sully Buttes Chargers are hungry to accomplish their goals for 2011-2012.

With a group of experienced and talented players, the Chargers have every right to feel that they belong with the rest of the elite in the state tournament. To accomplish this goal, coach Mark Senftner is preaching to take the season in

stride“We haven’t been in the state

tournament for a couple of years so we are just taking it one step at a time,” Senftner said. “Our kids have been through a lot and have played a lot of basketball, we are just going to come out and work hard to get better as a team.”

Coach Senftner has all of the tools to put a state champion-ship level team on the floor. The Chargers are a deep team which will be key for the style they play which features a suffocating full-

court press. While depth may be what puts

the Chargers in the hunt, Senftner will rely on his four seniors to put his team over the top. Taylor Hackett, Rylae Wientjes, Taryn Colson and Jaymi Schultz will all give the Chargers huge contribu-tions on the floor.

“Our seniors have played a lot of basketball, we rely heavily on them for leadership and when we get into close games we will ask them to make plays. Big players make big plays in big games and

that is what we expect from them,” Senftner said.

The seniors will not only be relied on during the game but also to mentor the younger Chargers who provide the team with such great depth.

“Our seniors remember when they were younger, they had some good leaders and realize that it’s their turn to carry on our great tradition,” Senftner said.

Judging by their opening night rout of Stanley County, the Chargers appear poised to be con-

tenders but the Chargers have a tough schedule on the horizon which is sure to test them.

“We’ve always loaded our sched-ule up with tough opponents,” Senftner said. “We play a number of tough teams this season to chal-lenge us.”

The Sully Buttes Chargers have every reason to believe they will be back contending for a state title in March. With their talent, depth and experience, expect to hear much more from the Sully Buttes Chargers basketball team in 2012.

Charger girls try to get back to state tournamentBy Wade laroCheCapital Journal staff

ONIDA — There’s plenty to be excited about if you’re a fan of Sully Buttes wrestling.

The Chargers return a couple of state tour-nament qualifiers, add a pair of transfers from the Pierre program and bring in some up-and-coming under classmen in their 2011-12 campaign.

Sure there’s uncertainty.

When isn’t there? But that can energize a fan base as much as putting a perennial contender on the mat every year. Not that the fan base up in Sully County needs any stoking.

One of the hurdles fac-ing the Chargers is that one-third of their 16-man roster could be wrestling at the same weight.

“We’ve got a little flex-ibility, but where we’re really stacked at that 145

to 170 weight-pound class. We’ve got five kids that basically weigh 150 pounds, so some are going to have to lose a little to go down and some could potentially have the opportunity to sit back and eat all year long,” coach Colby Brink said.

“Some may even have to eat a little more than expected to make the minimum weight for the next higher weight class.”

Another obstacle to

overcome is their youth. “We’ve basically got six

varsity wrestlers returning from last year and the rest are seventh and eighth graders,” Brink said.

There are some silver linings, however, such as the adjustments made to the weight classes.

“The new weight class-es this year suit us bet-ter than last year. I like the new structure of the weight classes, there’s not as big of jumps between

the weights and we’ll grow into them and that’s a good sign,” Brink said.

Another positive are the two experienced additions to the team.

“Skylar and Wyatt Leesman, who were good wrestlers in the Pierre program, are now attend-ing Sully Buttes. They’re going to be good and with the couple of state (tour-nament) qualifiers that we’ve got coming back, I think we’ll be a good

strong team,” Brink said. As for the being young,

the Chargers see oppor-tunity.

“Team-wise expecta-tions are going to be based more off of individual suc-cess because we’re a real young team. There’s going to be opportunities for all these kids. We do have some junior high and junior varsity events that all the kids are going to get a chance to wrestle this year,” Brink said.

Head Coach — Ryan Resel

Key Losses — Pat Waring 135 pounds 2011 3rd at State; Wilbur Jones 152 pound 2011 3rd at State; Austin McCloud 160 pound 2011 state qualifier; Colin Bertsch 140 pounds 2011 state qualifier.

Key Returners — Paul Waring, 132 pounds, 2011 state qualifier at 119 pounds

Devon Gnat, 145 pounds, 2011 state qualifier at 130 pounds

Tre Blasdell, 160 pounds, 2011 regional qualifier

Coach’s comment — We are a relatively young team this year with only three upper classmen on the team, and will look for leader-ship from some of the younger kids. With two returning state qual-fiers, and one region qualifier, our expectations and goals have both stayed high this year. We will have a few open spots to fill in, but should be very competitive individually.

Head Coach — David Larson

Key Losses — Jeffrey DeVine, 14 PPG, 4 RPG

Connor McPeck, 11 PPG, 2.5 RPG

Key Returners — Jerrid Schmidt, Senior, 7 PPG, 5 RPG

Tate Nafziger, Junior, 8.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG

Coach’s comment — We have an athletic bunch of kids who love to compete. We feel like we should be able to defend and rebound better this year, which should help our transition offense. You can expect to see a more up-tempo style of basketball. We feel like we should be able to compete for a conference championship with teams like Sully Buttes, Herreid-Selby, and Eureka-Bowdle.
