Make the arts an important part of yourteachingArts for Learning (A4L) Lessons is an arts-integrated supplemental

literacy curriculum that blends the creativity and discipline of the arts

with cutting-edge learning science to raise student achievement in

reading and writing. A4L is research-based and fully aligned with the

Indiana Academic Standards in reading and writing and 21st Century

Skills. This is for use by grade 3-6 classroom teachers.

Working with a design team from the University of Washington led by cognitive scientist Dr. John Bransford, Young Audiences

crafted five A4L units that follow the “How People Learn” model, which involves a gradual transfer of the responsibility for learning

from teacher to student.

Each A4L Unit includes a 3-hour interactive training for classroom teachers, embedded assessment that allows teachers to monitor

student improvement, and a companion artist residency that allows students to deepen their understanding about the art form.
