Editorial

The weather in June has been diabolical but the village soldiered on regardless. In this country if we waited for a nice day we wouldn’t get much done. Congratulations to the Parish Council and the Fete committee for making the most of the conditions presented to them. Surely the Music Festival will have better fortune. I would like to welcome Paul Saunders to our list of advertisers. He is a window cleaner and his advert is on page 15. If you

employ anyone after seeing their advert in Cople News please let them know as it encourages them to stay with us. The Parish Council is very concerned about a planning application to establish a six pitch traveller site to house travelling show people over winter. A special meeting of the Council will be held on 9 July, 2012 at 8.30pm in the Village Hall to discuss a new planning application for Land North of Bedford Road, Cople - Use of land for showmans family quarters (6 x pitches) and associated hardstanding, gates and fences, this meeting has been arranged in order for Parish Council to meet the response date issued by Bedford Borough Council for this application. The agenda is on page 21. The public may attend and speak during the first 30 minutes. Residents wishing to

object to any Planning Applications, could they please forward a copy of their objection letter to the Clerk as well as Bedford Borough Council

Letter from the Vicarage I wonder which part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in London you enjoyed most. There was certainly plenty to see from the river pageant, to the concert outside Buckingham Palace and finally the service in St Paul’s Cathedral.

As you may well have guessed, for me it was the Thanksgiving Service at St Paul’s. I found the music and readings spiritually uplifting and I thought the Archbishop’s address was well crafted and right for the occasion. He used as his text, a verse from Paul’s letter to the Romans chapter 12 “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God”. During the past sixty years that is exactly what Her Majesty the Queen has done; given herself to a life of service for her country and the commonwealth.

This servant role model is at the heart of the Gospel. Jesus washed his disciples feet at the last supper and said “For I have given you an example that you should also do as I have done to you”. Later in the letter to the Philippians Paul writes “Although Jesus was in the form of God he did not count equality as something to be grasped but emptied himself taking the form of a servant being born in the likeness of men.”

Such dedication to service which we have seen in the life of the Queen is also seen throughout our country, often by those who go unrecognised.

However the word “dedication” has come to mean rather less than it used to. As we prepare for the Olympics we admire all those athletes who train hard in order to reach their full potential and hopefully achieve their lifetime’s best result. They are dedicated to their sport as loyal football fans are dedicated to their team but not in the same way as the word is used in classical and biblical language. For in biblical terms “To be dedicated” is to be absolutely removed from other uses and being completely available to God. Few of us will achieve that, although we get close to it when we give of ourselves for the good of others.

This month and later in October, we have two special services of Dedication at Willington. The first is on Sunday 8th July for the pew cushions and the new area at the back of the church and the second is for the organ on Wednesday 24th October. At the service on 8th July we are delighted that our new Bishop of

Bedford, The Right Revd Richard Atkinson will lead the service. As with the beautiful service in St Paul’s Cathedral for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the visit of a Bishop to the Benefice is always a very special occasion.

Indeed for us this is proving to be the year of Bishop’s visits. Bishop Paul Bayes the Bishop of Hertford came here in May for the Confirmation service. The Bishop of Bedford is coming to Willington on Sunday 8th July at 3.30pm and then at the end of the month on Sunday 29th July, Bishop Alan Smith the Bishop of St Albans is coming to Moggerhanger.

So we are having a Bishops “Hat trick” and like buses if “you miss one there will be another one coming along shortly”. But joking apart the services led by the Bishops afford the

opportunity to rededicate our lives in Christian service to the glory of God. Sometimes we need these special services to encourage us and to help us to renew our commitment as “we offer ourselves as a living sacrifice Holy and acceptable to God.” I do hope that you will be able to join us when we welcome two of our Bishops to our Benefice

Mother’s Union

Our meeting in July will take place at Glebe House on 2nd July at 2:30pm when our speaker will be the Rev Jackie Buck.

Last month we were pleased to welcome back Alaine, our former

Branch Leader. After prayers, Alaine spoke about her many years experience as a carer, having worked in nursing homes and in the local community. She recalled many happy instances and also some sad ones, but felt privileged to have been

involved with the people she met and served throughout her career in caring.

The Wave of Prayer will take place in July on a date to be notified.

If you pet has not been to church for a while we have organised their own “Back to church Sunday event” .Mr Brian Marshall,

who spoke at Cople last year is coming to Willington on 8th July. So please encourage any animals who live with you to attend preferably on a lead or in a cage. It was great fun last year so it promises to be good. What is more you could always walk your dog across the field as a short cut to the church exactly as I do

on a Thursday morning. After the service as you would expect, water and dog biscuits will be served.

Curate’s Corner Walking is good for us, in fact it is so beneficial, physically and mentally, that doctors often prescribe gentle walking as part of a recovery programme for patients, after operations and illness.

Praying is also good for us, and for others, so put the two together and we must be onto a winner.

And that’s exactly what we are going to do at 7.30pm on Monday 9th July.

The Benefice Exploring Prayer Group are joining up with the Methodists at Willington to do a prayer walk around part of Willington, starting at the Methodist Chapel and finishing at the Anglican Church, with a few detours along the way.

Beginning at the Chapel we will make our way steadily to the Church, stopping at strategic points long the way to pray for specific needs. There will be some cold drinks waiting for us when we arrive at the Church and we will end with a short act of worship. We should finish by 9.15pm. Everyone is welcome to

join us and you don’t need to live in Willington to come, as the prayers will not only focus on the needs of Willington but other aspects of life as well.

We look forward to seeing you and we just hope for fine weather!

I am writing to thank all to all those who collected and those who gave during the recent “House to House collection”. It is really encouraging to report that despite the recession we raised £135 more than last year. This year’s total was a marvellous

£620.25. Thank you for your support.

"Keep Calm and Carry On"

This was the motto we adopted for the Church Fete in the face of meteorological doom and gloom and the customary media negativity when it comes to the weather. Our grateful thanks to those who prayed for the rain to stop and who forgot to mention the wind! and to that superb band of willing and enthusiastic

volunteers who gave their time and energy to make it happen. The decision to hold the bulk of the event in the Hall turned out to be very successful and created a great atmosphere. A special thanks to the Children from the Village School who painted and danced for us and to the Dogs who entertained us and to the people on the other end of the leads who behaved beautifully. This annual event is not only a traditional one but also avery important part of the Church's fund raising efforts which becomes more demanding year by year. We hope that those of

you who supported us enjoyed it and those of you who couldn't make it this year will be there in 2013. The provisional figure for funds raised is £2,000. Mike Vacher and June Shanahan

Cople celebrates the Diamond Jubilee

In spite of the weather’s best attempts to stifle our enthusiasm and enjoyment, many villagers attended the Diamond Jubilee Picnic in the Park on Tuesday June 5th. The event commenced

with a brief but rousing opening ceremony led by Mr. Reg Minney, who at the age of 94 and having only ever lived in the village, has to be Cople’s oldest resident. During Reg’s lifetime Britain has had four monarchs: George V, Edward VIII, George VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

As attendees wined and dined (or picnicked) the afternoon away, they were treated to a variety of events and activities, including a number of impressive displays from the Viking and Saxon re-enactment group, Wryngwyrm. These covered all aspects of combat and warfare from sword and shield to longbow. In addition, Wryngwyrm demonstrated a variety of crafts (woodworking, bone and antler

work, needlecraft, forging, cooking and coin striking) in the Viking Village as well as enthralling us all with their story telling.

There was also a Treasure Trail (organised by Cople Lower School) and a Colouring Station for children. Congratulations to the Marco Family who won the Treasure Trail.

Arguably, one of the highlights of the afternoon was the tug of war match between Cople’s Finest and The Vikings. A hastily assembled (sorry, handpicked) Cople team coached by a large

Page 18: 2012 07

July 2012 18

man in a skirt (sorry, Barry Wells in his St George’s kilt) narrowly lost in a best of three encounter against a rather

fearsome (and fairly sizeable) group of Vikings. [A big thank you here to Wayne Stroud who managed to obtain a rope at the eleventh hour after the organisers had been let down!] The headline bout was then followed by a catchweight contest between Cople Ladies and Cople Kids (the weights were probably

skewed somewhat in favour of the kids as they outnumbered the ladies by about three to one but that didn’t stop one or two of our most competitive ladies giving it everything!)

No sooner had everyone got their breath back than Wryngwyrm

were back in the arena seeking justice after one of their number had been caught stealing a sheep! General mayhem followed culminating in pitched battle involving all the Viking warriors and

Page 19: 2012 07

19

July 2012

the Cople kids. The look of terror on the Vikings’ faces as they were mercilessly slain by the children was a sight to behold!

Once order had been restored the children had the opportunity to collect their commemorative bone china mugs.

As the storm clouds gathered and the rain became ever more persistent the decision was taken to close the event 30 minutes

early, signing off with the singing of Land of Hope and Glory followed by the National Anthem.

Background music was provided throughout the afternoon by Cople’s resident MC and DJ,

Jim Moore whose carefully chosen playlist (many with some sort of regal connection, albeit sometimes rather tenuous) included hits from the time of Her Majesty’s Coronation right through to the current day.

The event was funded by the Parish Council with donations from The Tuesday Club, Friends of Cople Church, The Parochial Church Council and Cople Sports & Social

Club. Whilst it was always intended that the event should be a fun day rather than any sort of fundraising event, Keech Cottage did raise in excess of £60 by way of a ‘Guess the name of the Royal Teddy’ for a rather splendid, suitably attired teddy bear (kindly donated by

Dawn Mabbutt and Hyspec Ltd.). [Congratulations to Ian Franklin – I’m sure that ‘Teddy’ was just what he had always wanted!]

Clearly events of this type don’t happen without plenty of forethought and planning, and huge thanks should go to Jane Barnard, June Thomas, Heather Legg, Steven Smith, Hazel Shreeves, Lynda Klimas and Marilyn & Vaughan Southgate for their efforts. An extra special thank you should also be extended to Cople Over Sixties Club who knitted (yes knitted!)

the wonderful bunting which adorned the arena.

Peal of Bells in Cople

First for 23 years

On Wednesday June 6th to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee a full peal was rung on the bells of All Saints Church. A peal comprises over 5000 changes and takes nearly three hours of

continuous ringing to complete. On the six bells at All Saints it is possible to get 720 different changes and so for a peal we have to repeat the sequence seven times giving a total of 5040. For each block of 720 we rang a different “method” – to a bellringer this is our music and there are many hundreds of

different ones to choose from. The ringers that took part are all fairly local coming from Biggleswade, Clifton, Flitton and Hitchin. We thoroughly enjoyed the challenge as well as the hospitality afterwards. It was 23 years since the last peal was rung at

Cople – let’s hope it isn’t as long to the next one.

The details of the peal are below:

Wednesday 6 June 2012 in 2hrs 53mins (8cwt)

A Peal of Minor in 7 methods

Cople Sports and Social Club

We had an enjoyable and successful day at the Jubilee event, this included serving morning tea to the Vikings who looked very menacing but were all very courteous and polite. The bar was open all day and proved very popular alongside the BBQ which was provided by Cople Argus Cricket Club. The TV proved essential for those wishing to watch the royal proceedings. Thank you to all involved, volunteering your time and energy in what resulted in a victorious day.

On 28th May 2012 we held our AGM and I am pleased to

announce that the committee has been elected and will continue to offer their commitment, time and support to the Sports and Social Club which enables members and others to use the facilities.

The European Football Championships 2012 are well underway we will be open for many of them with TV coverage, for more information posters are displayed in the club alternatively call number below.

As cricket season is in full flow the Sports and Social Club is open for service on some mid week games and those at weekends.

We are holding a Caribbean night on Saturday July 21st so if you

fancy coming along and sampling some

Caribbean delights or having a go at dancing then

please join us from 7pm till late. Unfortunately

there will be no sea and sand but we will have

palm trees and hopefully some sunshine.

The Beekeeper's Diary

The weather has certainly been predictably unpredictable and British and, as well as curtailing our outdoor activities, has made it very difficult for the bees to follow their natural patterns for this time of year. Swarming has been delayed and although I managed to create a few artificial swarms in the one sunny weekend, we generally now have hives very full of pretty grumpy bees, just waiting for a break in the wind and rain to swarm. It's a time to be vigilant and watch for the signs, otherwise you could find half your bees have flown off !

I get a lot of council referral calls from the public about alleged bee swarms, in most cases these turn out to be solitary bees or bumbles, both of which we are unable to do anything about, 'leave them alone and they'll leave you alone' is the best advice. I have collected a few honey bee swarms however and we would rather take the calls than have people put themselves and the bees at risk by taking steps themselves.

The bad weather has also meant that the bees have not been able to get out and forage as much as they normally would on the oilseed rape. In fact this is probably the worst start to a season we have seen for a very long time, and with the rape now largely gone to seed, it's time to move them onto some other crops. Luckily a few local farms have some spring bean on the go (supposed to make a nice honey), and following that we will move onto sunflowers and borage.

On a separate note one of the daily papers recently contained findings from a study at Reading University. It reported that the loss of honey bees in Britain would cost us in the region of £1.8 billion a year just to replace honey bee pollination with manual processes – hence the phrase ‘busy as a bee’.

As I write this we are hoping for good weather for the village fete where I will have a stand with local honey tasting. I look forward to seeing you there.

Wild About Cople

Rain, rain and even more rain (and very little sun and warmth). The changeable weather this spring is certainly having an impact on our wildlife in a variety of ways. In our gardens the birds are now well into their second, or even third brood – this morning I

found a lovely duck egg coloured freshly hatched blackbird’s eggshell dropped on our lawn. Why do we find these empty eggshells scattered about? It’s believed to be a distraction tactic used by the parent birds as a way of keeping the attentions of potential predators away from the newly hatched nestlings –

remove all obvious signs which may show the nest up, so the empty eggshells are taken and discarded at some distance from the nest. Sometimes the adults will also eat the shells as a way of increasing their calcium intake.

But, as mentioned earlier, the weather is having an effect and during periods of continuous rain and cooler temperatures many birds will be struggling to find enough food to keep their young fed and the chilling and wet will not be helping either as the parents will need to keep their young warm and sheltered by brooding them. Let’s hope that things start improving soon. . .

And the spring butterflies have struggled too and have had to dodge the showers and do their best in the current conditions. The Orange-tip, that lovely butterfly of the spring lanes and hedges, the male with his beautiful tangerine-orange tips to the forewings, put in a brief appearance during the few sunny warm spells we have had and the females (without the orange wingtips) will have laid their bright orange eggs singly on the undersides of the flower heads of Hedge Garlic, Cuckooflower (or

Lady’s Smock) and garden plants such as Honesty. The caterpillars are cannibals (the reason for laying the eggs singly!) and are superbly camouflaged amongst the leaves and seed pods. As they feed they absorb some of the strong chemicals

from the plant and thus have some small degree of protection from predators such as birds as they have a disagreeable taste. Plea – to help these lovely butterflies please plant or keep plenty of the above plants in your gardens and hedges.

While we are discussing harbingers of spring – how about that all-time favourite, the cuckoo? Well, sadly they are in steep

decline (down by 65% since the 1980s) and there appears to be several possible reasons – the influence of poor weather during their migration and overwintering periods, lack of their favoured foods; particularly their liking for large, hairy caterpillars and a change in the nesting patterns of some of their host bird species.

No-one knows for sure but let’s hope their fortunes change for the better soon. The British Trust for Ornithology have radio-tagged several cuckoos from Norfolk, Suffolk and more recently in Scotland. You can follow their movements and travels here:

www.bto.org/science/migration/tracking-studies/cuckoo-tracking I have only heard a cuckoo on two occasions around Cople this year – once very early on a Sunday morning when one ‘cuckooed’ for several minutes directly opposite my bedroom window in Willington Road – what a lovely way to be woken up!

One good thing about all the rain is that our ponds and water butts are full and if, like me, you have a pond in your garden then this will be good for all the aquatic creatures which live in and around a pond. Water skaters, water boatmen, tadpoles and

damselfly and dragonfly larvae will all be thriving under the water’s surface.

Thank you to all of you who came on the morning birdsong walk around Cople – I hope you all enjoyed it and I think we ought to

do it again next spring?! Some people suggested a bat walk with bat detectors and maybe followed by a barbecue at the pub, later in the summer; let me know if you would be interested? I would also like to thank Julie and Eamonn who did such a smashing breakfast at The Five Bells – I know it was enjoyed by everyone.

Also, maybe we should have a walk around the village on a more regular basis; say once per season so we can look at the changing wildlife and countryside around Cople? Again, please let me know your thoughts. Steve Halton [email protected]

Police Update

CURRENT ISSUES

There has been one crime in Cople since the beginning of June, this was a case of criminal damage to some plant pots and the offender was arrested by police. Please continue to be vigilant

and report any suspicious activity to Bedfordshire Police on 101.

BEDFORDSHIRE POLICE ON FACEBOOK

It is just over a year since Bedfordshire Police set up its

Facebook page. Now, with 5,500 fans, it is the most popular Police Facebook site in the country. Using Facebook enables the Police to get their message across in an informal and simple way to people who aren't normally in contact with them. It also helps them in preventing crime and identifying criminals. It is so

useful as a source of intelligence that guidelines have been put onto it asking people not to post information directly on the site but to send it in confidentially so not to compromise investigations.

Web Manager Andrea Briggs explained: "I think our success is down to the two-way communication people enjoy from our Facebook page. It's opened up a way of communicating with people who'd rather message us via Facebook rather than contact us another way. We get intelligence about offenders and

can promote events such as the Luton SOS Bus, to people who do use other media. "People ask us all sorts of questions - from the progress of an investigation to what is the Police helicopter doing flying over my house. We reply as quickly as possible so they keep up to date with what's happening in and around their

area and can help us with incidents. We also tell people about other useful sites if they ask a question about something we don't deal with. "An organisation can't be an occasional user of Facebook, you have to provide people with up to date information to keep it fresh and interesting. People use our website if they are looking for something specific but through Facebook we get lots of people visiting from different communities and of all ages, which makes it easier to get advice to people and information from us. "We give regular updates and

The Story Behind The Painting given by Sue Edwards

Susan took us on a factual and enjoyable journey through centuries of art. We were told about the artist and the story behind the picture. The details that may be missed and all the clues that bring the picture to life. A painting of the Jarrow marches(1936) feathered a glamorous couple dressed to go out. Smoking, drinking looking relaxed the lady was dreaming into the distance, looking out the window at the march. The protesters were just "blobs" in the distance. Although this was a significant event it appears on the painting as al most

insignificant! Apparently George Stubbs who painted the famous horse "Whistejacket" around 1762 was able to do so with such sensitivity and accuracy because he studied a horse carcass which he had in his room for many months!! Certainly we will look at paintings in a very different way- how the light

falls, the subjects’ expressions, the colours and the gestures may not be portraying the obvious-look again

The next meeting will be a Cheese and Wine evening in the lovely garden of Joy and Andrew Duthie. Please wear a hat!! 18

Woodlands Close, Cople Tuesday 10th July 7 30 pm. All Welcome. Please note if the weather is inclement the event will take place indoors.

This months Gardening Tasks

According to my old friend Stan Brown, 86 years young

and one of Cople’s finest: ‘A dry May and a dripping June

puts everything in good tune’. And after one of the wettest Junes since records began much of the garden is

not so much as in ‘good tune’, as positively symphonic.

But with all the rain, lush, green leaf growth has, in many instances, replaced the more usual sight at this time of

year of brightly coloured blooms gently swaying in the

breeze.

Along with the almost ubiquitous rain, the temperature is

still decidedly chilly and who can blame the flowers for

staying snug in their buds rather that bursting forth only to get clattered by the inclement elements?!

As gardeners, we might not be able to create more heat but for most floriferous, non ericaceous plants, a feed of

tomato fertilizer will help ‘pep’ things up. With so much

rain, it is possible that many nutrients in your garden’s soil

will have washed through the soil or ‘leached’ out. The easiest way to remedy this is to use the liquid form;

readily available, one simply dilutes a capful or so into a

watering can, gives it a stir and then douses the plant concentrating on the base where thirsty roots eagerly lap

it up.

Once plants have flowered, the job then is to keep them in

bloom so don’t forget to ‘dead head’, that is, the removal

of all faded flowers with secateurs so as to trick the plant

into creating new ones. And also, don’t forget to keep tying in new growth of all tall plants.
