PRESIDENT’S REPORT November 2012
.
Fellow Members,
End of Term – Well, this is it, my last President’s report. My 2 year term expires at the November AGM and another Club President will need to be elected.
I have enjoyed my term as President, working with the rest of the Com-mittee to ensure the Club runs smoothly and there is always a full pro-gramme of trips and socials from which members can choose. Seeing members enjoy themselves on those trips and socials is a significant reward.
My sincere thanks to the Committee for all their efforts and hard work during the year and for their support. Running a Club is very much a team effort and I was honoured to have served with a great team.
I would also like to thank all Club members, Subaru Australia, Subaru Osborne Park and Subaru Wangara for their support of the Club.
Quiz Night – My thanks to Ray and Joanne for hosting the Quiz Night, which all attendees enjoyed. It went off without a hitch, due no doubt to the significant amount of preparation that went into organising the event. Thanks also to Subaru Osborne Park for sponsoring the event. I am looking forward to the next one!
Annual Dinner – I am also looking forward to the Annual Dinner. It promises to be another great evening at Yanchep. My congratulations in advance to the winners of Club Member of the Year and other Club Awards.
AGM/Committee – The Club Annual General Meeting and Club elec-tions will be held immediately after the November General Meeting.
At the AGM, all Committee positions become vacant, so please think hard about putting your hand up to join the Committee. Other than for office bearers who have served in that position for 2 years – myself as President and Dave Peck as Trips Co-ordinator, all other Committee members are eligible to be re-elected to their current position.
Please bring a plate for supper at the conclusion of the AGM.
Membership Renewal – The Club year ended on 30 September. Please renew your membership. Only financial members can vote at the AGM.
Vale – on behalf of the Club, I would like to express our sincere condo-lences to Ian Johnson on the recent death of his brother, Colin.
Tony Richards.

TRIP CO-ORDINATORS REPORT November 2012
This will be my last trip coordinators report. I will have served my two year term and it will be someone else’s turn next month.
Thanks for all the help and ideas you have given me. Keep the ideas coming in as it is your club and we want to run trips to the places that you want to go to. If you have any places you would like to see but you are unsure about leading a trip just ask one of the committee and we will see what we can do. Recently, I have had people ask to do the Captain Fawcett Track again and another request was to look at the possibility of a trip to the Pilbara next year taking in Mt Augustus. Any others?
Also, thanks to the people who have been leading trips recently. There have been some good ones recently to some new places which makes it interesting for everyone.
October was a bit quieter, with only the “Metro in the country” trip tak-ing us to a couple of interesting places close to Perth, thanks John.
Cheers , David

LANCELIN SAND DUNES
SUN 18TH NOVEMBER
Peter A. will again be leading our an-nual, excellent day out at the Lancelin Dunes.
This is a trip for all members in all
model 4WD Subarus (except unlifted
Libertys or Imprezas). Outbacks have
had a few front clearance problems in
the past, so if these owners have any

tray under the engine if it has not al-
ready been replaced with a sump
guard. Prospective, new and existing members are all invited to
learn the capabilities of their vehicle and their driving ability.
We split into groups depending on experience and start off easy, progressing to something more challenging. It is a fun day in a safe area with experienced members who will give you advice on all fac-ets of driving on sand including tyre pressures, choosing the right gear ratios and how to get out after getting stuck in the sand.
Bring: Full tank of fuel, lunch, drinks, snacks, tyre pump, tyre pressure gauge, hat, sunscreen and camera.

chance to have a swim at the lunch break.
Contact Peter A – 0419 854 671 (M)

BREAKFAST
AND SUPA
GOLF
SATURDAY JANUARY 19
Supa golf is a different take on golf. The balls are bigger, so are the
clubs and the course is shorter. So, combine that with a good brekky
and all that the Swan Valley has to offer, and it looks to be a good
day.
I found a fantastic cafe close by: Jude Taylor cafe and gallery, where
we start with breakfast. Meet at 8 to be finished by 9.30. The food is
great and the meals are between 7 and 25 dollars.
Supa golf will take about 2 hours and cost about $15. The course
should be easy, and fun.
The cafe is at 510 Great Northern Hwy. Supa Golf is at 10250 West
Swan Rd.
I need to close the trip on the 4th so I can give various people final
numbers.

WESTWAYS WILDFLOWER FARM – Day 2 – Sunday 12 /8
The night had been quiet, although Bella (Jon and Val’s dog) had apparently growled at something at about 4.00am. Later, I won-dered whether it might have been a fox, as Clive Tonkin (the owner) had told me that there were a few of them around.
Thankfully, although there had been a very light shower of rain in the early morning, it was not raining when I got up. However, it was
overcast and the possibility of rain existed. So, after breakfast, I de-cided better to pack up sooner rather than later, even though it was to be a slow start to the morning, with an expected 10.00 departure.
As it turned out, everyone was ready to go at 9.30. Our first stop was Stop 1 on the self-drive 4WD loop, the only stop we had not seen. We had done the rest of the loop the previous afternoon, but had bypassed this stop as we went straight to camp which was Stop 2. The instructions we had for Stop 1 were “Blackbutt Trees, look under these to find Orchids”. Unfortunately however, we did not find any orchids. It was just a bit early in the season, even though we did see some the day before. Nonetheless, there were plenty of other native shrubs and wildflowers to see, including an abundance of Banksias.
After that stop, we continued on to the homestead, as Clive had indi-cated that he would show us where/how the wildflowers were proc-essed. Clive (and his wife) Mau-reen showed us a number of differ-ent processed wildflowers. Some Banksias were drying on a rack after they had been dipped in a glycol solution to preserve them.
TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS
Page 17
SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC
They also showed us a number of other wildflowers that had been dried and/or preserved, including some that had been dyed.
After thanking Clive and Maureen for their time, we headed on to Jingemia Cave, which is in Watheroo National Park. It was once a local source of phosphate fertilis-ers for surrounding farmland (owing to the now inconspicuous bats). We arrived there at about 11.00 and had morning tea. We then proceeded down the short track into the cave, which might otherwise be described as a big hole in the ground. Nonetheless, it was pretty interesting and we were able to walk down into the cave to get a better view. After plenty of pictures were taken we headed back to the cars.
We stopped at Moora for lunch. There were some interesting mili-tary memorabilia at the park where we stopped, including an artillery piece built by the Ger-mans for the Turks and a metal soldier, which I think was called “Ironman”! There was also a plaque to commemorate the fact that 16 soldiers had died while they were closely examining a mortar and it had exploded. Very sad!
After lunch, we went on to the bakery in Bindoon for afternoon tea, where most of us enjoyed a cake or coffee or both! . By the time we left Bindoon, it was raining steadily with heavy showers on the way home.
My thanks to Keith for organising the weekend.____Tony Richards.

MOORE RIVER CRUISADE
( 9/9 Cruise with Adrian) Adrian asked if I would give his sister Allison a lift to the meeting
spot as he taken advantage of the good weather and spent the night
camping at Wilbinga. On the way he phoned and said he had some
trouble with his car and asked if we would lead the convoy up to
Guilderton. Waiting for us was Wendy and Matt who were both down
for the trip as well as Tony H who decided to come along for a drive
and have a look at some of the tracks in the area.
Tony had to stop at the service station and pick up some batteries
for his handheld radio and was going to catch up with us.
On the way we tried to contact Adrian and intermittently heard him
when we were on top of a hill so we assumed he was in front of us.
Getting to Guilderton Mark was there waiting for us as he spent the
night before at the caravan park, but no sign of Adrian. I backtracked
down the road to the top of the hill and tried calling him again and he
said that Tony was helping him change a wheel and they would be
along shortly. When they arrived it had proved timely that Tony was
behind the convoy as Adrian was having trouble with one of his
tyres. This was rubbing after the suspension strut housing took a
knock. They put Tony’s spare tyre on as it wasn’t as wide as
Adrian’s and didn’t rub.
Whilst they were waiting,
Mark had been trying the
fishing and Wendy paddled
up to have a look at the river
mouth as it was open and
flowing into the ocean.
The rest of us got out on the
water and headed off up-
stream. We continued at a leisurely pace for those of us with longer
kayaks. Matt and Mark did a great job paddling the shorter ones.
Page 19
SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC
We passed the sand dune that is on the waters edge and being a
warm 29 degrees there were some people sand boarding down the
dune into the river. There were also a number of people fishing and
we saw some of them catch small bream. Mark didn’t have any luck
(but that may have been the pink fishing rod).
We pulled up on the bank for a picnic lunch. After a while we
headed back downstream into the sea breeze which made the pad-
dle a bit harder.
When we returned to town it was packed with many people having
come up for the day and having a picnic.
The original idea had been to spend the afternoon and possibly
have a BBQ but Adrian was keen to get back home and see what
needed to be done to his car and a couple of others had to get back
early so we left at 3:00 for the drive home.

TRIP REPORT PARKERVILLE HIKE 16/9
The weather, Sunday afternoon was beautiful, sunny and warm.
There were 11 of us altogether including two visitors, Simon and
Meagan. We departed at 2 pm at a casual pace into John Forrest
National Park. There was plenty of time to talk, catch up and solve
the problems of the world. Notably absent was discussion about the
Aussie Rules Football results.
We all stopped at the disused Hovea railway station to read the
plaques and also at Hovea Falls. Wendy Griffiths spent time at the
Falls enjoying a respite from warm afternoon sun by dipping her feet
in the cool flowing water. Meanwhile Dave Peck, Phil Read and Ray
Dobson successfully found a geocache, leaving behind a Subaru
Club geocaching card.
Tim Read complained at certain points on the track about the poor
suspension in his pram (ie. none). It was even worse than Adrian's
car if that could be believed.
Page 20
SUBARU 4WD CLUB NEWS
The afternoon tea at John Forest National Park was true to the Su-
baru Club. Home made muffins, camembert cheese, quince paste
and biscuits. Jelly babies from Sticky Fingers in Mundaring and
fresh brewed tea and coffee. The return walk was very pleasant with
lots of other people also enjoying the cool afternoon. Ray Dobson
met someone whose dogs were cousins to their dog, bought from
the same breeder.
I would like to thank everyone for making it a great event.
Phil.

NOSING AROUND NINGHAN
DAY 1 SAT 29-10-12
A party of 9 cars (8 Foresters & 1 Outback) set off up the Great
Northern Highway, including visiting vets Veronica (daughter of trip
leader David) and Amos. Several oversized loads had to be negoti-
ated along the way. There were lovely displays of blue Leschenaul-
tia and purple Native Hi-
biscus (Alyogyne) flow-
ers along the roadside.
We stopped at Walebing
for morning tea. Plenty of
coffee, fuel and liquor
available, but no toilets !
During a quick fuel stop
in Wubin, I dashed over
the railway tracks to the
Visitor’s Centre where a
very helpful lady gave
me directions to find a
good display of the fa-Wreath Leschenaultia
Page 21

mous Wreath Flower (Leschenaultia macrantha) which I particularly
wanted to see this trip. On the road north of Wubin, the orange
Flame Grevillea
(Grevillea excelsior) ap-
peared along with the red-
flowered Emu Tree
(Hakea francisiana). We
paused at Jibberding Re-
serve where about a mil-
lion bush flies joined us
for a lunch break.
Then it was serious wild-
flower hunting with a di-
version down Sanderson
Road. Jenni had a good
wildflower book (Corrick &
Fuhrer), and I had Wajon,
Part 1, which is very user-
friendly, so between us we
could name some of the specimens we found along the way. The
Wreath Flowers here proved to be disappointingly tiny with few flow-

ers, however there were splendid displays on the roadside of the
bright yellow Common Popflower (Glischrocaryon aureum), the oc-
casional bush of purple Lance-leaved Tinsel Flower (Cyanostegia
lanceolata) and one bush of white-flowered Pituri (Duboisia hop-
woodii), which is used by Aborigines as an animal poison and nar-
cotic. Back on the highway, we went further northwards and turned
left into the Perenjori-Wanarra Road opposite the impressive works
of the Asia-Iron minesite. The helpful lady at Wubin had said that
the Wreath Flowers occurred 1 to 5 km along the road and had
asked that we park well off the road as it was frequented by mine
trucks. Sure enough, at about
3.5 km along the road extensive
tracts of very large (50 cm di-
ameter) wreaths appeared and
we all heaved to and leapt out of
the cars with cameras at the
ready. What a magnificent dis-
play! Not only masses of
wreaths with circlets of huge
pink and cream flowers, but also
numerous other wildflowers:
pink Pityrodia, blue Keraudre-
nia, yellow Goodenia and many
others that we had no idea what
they were. The lady was right
about the mine trucks which
roared past at fre-
quent intervals.
Eventually we had
to bid the Wreath
Flowers farewell
and head up to
Ninghan Station.
Emu encounters
became frequent
Page 23
SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC
and we saw a family of several chicks plus Dad on the road into the
station. The Station manager proved to be an entertaining character
engendering an instant desire to become gold prospectors in the
Lee kids with his stories of gold nuggets. He was helpful with direc-
tions to a campsite at Warrdagga Hill. David led the convoy along
the somewhat corrugated station tracks lined with faded yellow Pom
Pom everlastings (Cephalipterum drummondii), until we came in
sight of the impressive speckled surface of the Warrdagga monad-
nock. It looked a bit like a giant leopard loaf from the bakery. Pass-
ing a windmill with concrete tank and two long-drops (labelled His &
Hers), we stopped briefly at a campsite occupied by a family of
regular visitors to the station, then carried on further into the bush at
the foot of the rock. Here the everlastings gave way to Cotton Bush
(Ptilotus obovatus) shrubs with round fluffy pink & white flowers.
There were plenty of flat, sandy campsites under shady Mulga
(Acacia aneura) trees and the group was soon busy erecting tents.
David dug a big hole and set up the Subaloo: the thunderbox inside
a shower tent complete with toilet roll holder, anti-bac hand wipe
and Jim’s solar light. Firewood was plentiful and a roaring campfire
saw us through the coolish night under a full moon until we all re-
tired, weary but happy. Thanks to David for arranging the trip to
such a great venue.
