The 2012-13 Allegheny College golf media guide is a publication of the Allegheny athletic communications office. Special thank you to Karley Miller ‘15 for the cover designs and to Liz Blyth ‘13 and Patrick Fritz ‘13 for their research assistance. Head shots and team pictures supplied by Ed Mailliard. Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Al-legheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.”

A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by oc-cupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a ga-tor used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater.

In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that re-mains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

GREENCASTLE, IN 46135DEPAUW UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of nine academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster in addition to Earlham College as an affiliate member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

In addition to numerous alumni that have gone forward to start their own business, chair corporations, and serve as presidents and CEOs of various companies throughout the nation, many Allegheny graduates have pursued a career in golf as coaches and club professionals, including Abby Sorensen ‘12, who was named Head Coach at Gannon University following her graduation.

One of the program’s most notable alums is Nathan Smith ‘01, who has built one of the most decorated careers in the history of amateur golf. In 2012, Smith joined legends Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan as one of 15 players in USGA history to win the same championship at least four times when he captured the Mid-Amateur Championship, which also resulted in his his fourth invitation to the Masters.

The golf program has a dedicated indoor practice area in the Wise Sports and Fitness Center complete with hitting cages, putting green and short game area. Players have access to the indoor practice facilities throughout the entire school year.

The Allegheny golf program has a Foresight Sports GC2 launch monitor along with Foresight Sports Simulation Software. This allows the Gators to hit on the driving range or play one of 14 championship courses including Oakmont, Pebble Beach, Carnoustie, Firestone, and Congressional. In addition, the program utilizes a V1 Golf coaching system that allows all team members to view and analyze their swings.

The Gators enjoy their own home course at The Country Club of Meadville, which is located just two miles north of campus. With plush tee boxes and well-manicured fairways, the Club has served as one of the region’s top courses for over 100 years.

In addition to its home venue at The Country Club of Meadville, as well as nine other courses within close distance on which to play, Allegheny golf has been proud explorers of some of the game’s most prominent venues. In the past several years, the Gator program has toured some of the world’s most exclusive courses, including Old Prestwick in Ayrshire Scotland (site of the first British Open), Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania (site of 20 Major Championships) and Scioto in Columbus, Ohio (site of five PGA Championships).

HEAD COACH JEFF GROFF

Jeff Groff is in his 28th year at Allegheny and 12th as the head golf coach. He led his Gator men’s squad to the NCAA Division III Championship Tour-nament in each of his first five seasons -- part of a 30-year streak by the program, and has continued to keep Allegheny at the top of the regional rankings.

Groff, who has served as head coach of the women’s program since its inception in 2006, has guided the Gators to unprecedented heights. In 2012, the Gators became the first team in the history of college golf to qualify for the NCAA Championships its first seven years as a varsity program. In the seven consecutive showings at nationals, the Gators have produced six top-10 finishes.

In 2006, Groff became just the fifth coach in NCAA history to lead both the men’s and women’s teams to the NCAA Championships in the same year, while both teams also bagged a top-10 finish that season.

In 2012, both teams fared well, although the women shined down the stretch as they rallied to finish ninth at the NCAA Championships following a victory over national runner-up DePauw at the second event of the NCAC Championship Series. The men finished fifth in the NCAC Championship Series, although the team picked up back-to-back victories late in the spring for the program’s first team titles in two years.

The women’s squad earned its 2011 NCAA bid following another outstanding campaign in which it captured six tournament titles, including the inaugural North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship. The Gators, who were ranked as high as No. 4 in the national polls, captured their first league title by an astounding 98 strokes in five rounds of play. Individually, Hannah Schonau-Taylor secured medalist honors en route to NCAC Player of the Year, while Groff picked up the first NCAC Coach of the Year award on the women’s side. Under Groff’s tutelage, all five Allegheny players competing at the championships earned All-Conference honors. The team capped the season with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships, their highest finish at the national tournament in team history.

“Any time a team gets a bid to the national playoffs, it is a testament to the program and what the players have done throughout the year,” Groff said. “...I’ll be honest, this was never the plan coming in. Our primary focus was on building a program. In a few short years, the ladies have created their own identity and tradition of excellence. It has been an exciting story to say the least.”

I believe that the attraction to Allegheny College is the combination of a superb education preparing for life after graduation while having the opportunity to participate in a nationally recognized golf program. Every facet of this program from facilities and schedules to equipment and transportation is structured to allow for the best possible experience. It is the commitment to do the very best that is the Allegheny Advantage.

THE GROFF FILE

Over the last 10 seasons, eight athletes have earned All-America honors under Groff, including four-time winner Ben Rathfon, who was also the recipient of the Frank Fuhrer III Award as Western Pennsylvania’s top collegiate player in 2005. In 2006, freshman Chris Moore picked up the Phil Mickelson Award as the nation’s top freshman. Mike Wolfe earned PING/All-America honors in 2009, while Oliver White became the most recent Gator to elicit All-America plaudits following a spectacular rookie season in 2011. In 2010, Liz Blyth became the first women’s player to net All-America accolades, a feat she replicated in 2011.

In 2004, Groff was named the Eaton Golf Pride Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year (men) as he led the Gators to wins at both the fall and spring Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournaments. The following season, he picked up his first of three NCAC Coach of the Year honors as the squad won six events and captured runner-up at the conference championship. In 2008, Groff was also the National Golf Coaches Association East Region Coach of the Year (women).

Groff is a 1983 graduate of Millersville (Pa.) University, where he played baseball and was an Academic All-American outfielder as a senior. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from his alma mater and went on to earn his master’s in sports administration from Kent State University in 1985.

Groff has been a member of the NGCA Division III Awards Committee, the NGCA East Region Advisory Committee and the Golf Coaches Association of America Mid-Atlantic Regional Committee, where he served as the chairperson and voting member of the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll for several years. Currently, Groff holds a position on the Collegiate Players Tour (CPT) Advisory Board.

A native of Lancaster, Pa., Groff attended Penn Manor High School, where he played varsity soccer, basketball and baseball. He also is an avid golfer and a student of the game. Groff is married to the former Chris Binnie, a 1989 Allegheny graduate.
