CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK - 4

One of the nation’s most successful coaches, Ray Treacy embarks on his 29th season as Director of Cross Country and Track Operations at Providence College. In his 28 years at Providence, Treacy has coached 152 All-Americans, 13 NCAA individual champions, 149 BIG EAST individual champions and 11 Olympians. In addition, his teams have captured one NCAA Cross Country Championship, 11 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, 20 BIG EAST Cross Country titles and 20 New England Championships. Treacy's road to success began when he was a student-athlete at Providence College. A 1982 graduate of the College, Treacy is very committed to the success of PC's cross country and track programs. His knowledge of conditioning and training has moved the Friars' cross country and track programs into national prominence since he took over as head coach in 1984. Success and Ray Treacy have been synonymous at Providence College. Besides his long lists of BIG EAST, ECAC, IC4A and New England Champions, Treacy was instrumental in putting together the 4 X 1,500 meter relay team that set the world record at the Penn Relays in 1991. For his achievements, he was named Rhode Island Words Unlimited Coach of the Year (1991). In 1995, Treacy's women's cross country squad completed its incredible season by capturing its first NCAA title. Prior to winning the NCAA title, the women's squad also won its first BIG EAST and ECAC championships. In recognition of his efforts, Treacy was named NCAA Division I

Women's National Coach of the Year, BIG EAST Men's and Women's Coach of the Year, Rhode Island Words Unlimited Women's Coach of the Year and NCAA District I Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. In 2003-04, the women's cross country team finished third at the NCAA Championships with juniors Kim Smith and Mary Cullen leading the way. Smith finished second overall, while Cullen took fifth-place to earn All-America honors. Providence was the only team to have two runners finish in the top five. The women's team also won its third Northeast Regional title and Treacy was named Northeast Regional Coach of the Year for the seventh time since 1990. In the indoor season that school year, Smith continued to shine. She became the first Providence female athlete to capture two NCAA titles in the same meet, winning the 3,000 and 5,000 meters in NCAA record time. Smith's time of 15:14.18 in the 5,000 meters shattered the previous NCAA record of 15:17.28, which was set in 1991. In the 3,000 meters, Smith also set a NCAA record, finishing the race in 8:49.18 and eclipsing the old record of 8:53.54, which was set in 1983. Smith helped the Friars to a ninth-place finish at the NCAAs, the team's best performance since 1992 (when the Friars placed fourth). On the men's side, Adam Sutton earned All-America honors by placing eighth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Championships. During the outdoor track season, Smith also won the 5,000 meters to claim her third NCAA individual title. In all, Smith set three NCAA records and four Providence College records. The 2004-05 season proved to be another banner year for Treacy's teams. The women's cross country team placed third at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season and captured its fourth BIG EAST title. Again, the team was paced by Kim Smith, who capped off her brilliant career at PC by winning the NCAA Championship. Treacy also guided both the men's and women's cross country teams to the NCAA Northeast Regional title and he repeated as regional Coach of the Year. The men's cross country team made its 10th consecutive appearance at the NCAAs and finished 21st. The team also won its 24th New England crown. Seven PC All-Americans were crowned during the 2005-06 season as the Friars continued their tradition of success. Martin Fagan finished 16th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to earn his first All-America honor. On the women's side, senior Fiona Crombie also was tabbed as an All-American with a 14th-place finish as the women's cross country team made its 17th consecutive trip to the NCAAs. During the indoor track sea-son, senior Mary Cullen finished second in the 3,000 meters at the NCAAs, earning her fifth All-America accolade. The men's team was led by junior

All-American Max Smith who placed sixth in the mile at the NCAAs. Treacy also guided Fagan and Cullen to BIG EAST titles in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters and both were named Most Outstanding Performers at the BIG EAST Championships. The outdoor track season was another milestone for Providence. Running in her final race, Cullen won the 5,000 meters at the NCAAs and became Treacy’s ninth individual NCAA champion. Cullen's performance helped Providence finish in a tie for 25th-place, the highest result of any BIG EAST team. The men's team recorded its highest finish ever at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships, placing 16th, which also was the best of any BIG EAST team. Fagan placed second in the 10,000 meters and Smith finished third in the 1,500 meters, each reaching All-America honors. In 2006-07, the men's and women's cross country teams enjoyed stellar seasons. Both teams were crowned BIG EAST Champions, Treacy’s 11th men’s title and fifth women’s. Shortly after, both squads finished among the top-10 at the NCAA Championships, with the women's team capturing seventh-place and the men landing in ninth. Individually, Martin Fagan won the individual BIG EAST title and completed the season with a fifth-place finish at the NCAAs. Aine Hoban finished second at the BIG EAST Championship for the women and seventh at the NCAAs. Fagan and Hoban each earned All-America honors for their efforts. At the conclusion of the BIG EAST Championships, Treacy and his assistants were honored as BIG EAST Staff of the Year in both men's and women's cross country. At season's end, Fagan was honored by the USTFCCCA as the Division I Northeast Region Male Athlete of the Year. During the indoor and outdoor track seasons, three Friars won a total of four BIG EAST individual titles, led by Max Smith’s two individual championships in the mile (indoor) and 1,500 meters (outdoor). Hoban (5,000 meter indoor) and Fagan (3,000 meter indoor) were PC's other BIG EAST individual champions on the year. Hoban, Smith and Fagan also earned All-America honors during the track seasons. Hoban led the way, having earned All-America recognition in the 5,000 meters (indoor) and 10,000 meters (outdoor). Fagan claimed All-American honors in the 3,000 meters (indoor) and Smith

was recognized in the 1,500 meters (outdoor). Prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championship, Smith was named USTFCCCA Division I Northeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year. In the 2009 outdoor track season, Danette Doetzel won the BIG EAST title in the 10,000 meters, qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Doetzel concluded her illustrious career at Providence College by capturing the 10,000 meter title at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. Doetzel's victory was the 10th NCAA individual title for the Providence College women's track and cross country program under Coach Ray Treacy. The tradition of excellence continued during the 2010 cross country campaigns. Junior Lee Carey captured the men’s program’s 11th individual BIG EAST title when he beat the field just outside Syracuse, N.Y. One month later, the Friars continue a remarkable trend - qualifying both the men and women for the NCAA’s in 14 of the last 15 seasons. The women’s represented PC on their sport's largest stage in 22 straight autumns. During the 2011 season, the men once again qualified for the NCAA Championships while the women placed second at the 2011 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships ahead of the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships. The 2012 Indoor season saw multipleoutstanding performances. On the men's side David McCarthy broke the New England Collegiate and Provi-dence College school record in the mile after running 3:55.73 at the Boston University Terrier Invitational on 1/27-28. McCarthy also was a member of the distance medley relay team, along with Shane Quinn, Nik Andrews and Julian Matthews, that won at the 2012 BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships. Emily Sisson gained second team All-America after finishing 12th at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 3,000 meters. Sisson gained another All-America honor in outdoor track after finishing fourth at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Teammate Shelby Greany also gained second team All-America honors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a 10th place finish. Several of the coach’s student-athletes have gone on to leave their mark internationally. In 1996, three athletes, all trained under Treacy's guidance at Providence, became PC's first female track stars to compete in the Olympics. Sinead Delahunty (1,500 meters), Marie McMahon (5,000 meters) and Amy Rudolph (5,000 meters) all competed in Atlanta, Ga. Treacy had three former Friars compete in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, as well, with Delahunty (1,500 meters), Rudolph (5,000 meters) and Mark Carroll (5,000 meters) all running in the 2000 Games. Kim Smith, Marie McMahon, Maria McCambridge and Mark Carroll competed in the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Kim Smith (10,000 meters), Roisin McGettigan (3,000 meter steeplechase) and Martin Fagan ’07 (Marathon) all competed. At the 2012 London Olympics, Kim Smith (Marathon), Dylan Wykes (Marathon) and Stephanie Reilly (3,000 meter Steeplechase) all competed. The brother of 1984 Olympic silver medalist, John Treacy, Ray’s collegiate list of accomplishments and accolades is lengthy. He was the Friar’s team captain during his junior and senior year and collected All-America honors on three occasions. He was a two-time, New England cross country champion and won the indoor 5,000 meters at the BIG EAST Championships three times. The talented distance runner was also the IC4A Champion in the 10,000 and 5,000 meters during the 1981 and 1982 seasons, respectively. Kevin Myles is entering his third season at Providence College where he serves as the Head Men's Track Coach and the Assistant Coach of the cross country and women's track teams. In his first season with the Friars, Myles helped guide both the men’s and women’s cross country programs to berths in the NCAA Championship, continuing a remarkable trend: both pro-gram’s have advanced to their sport’s highest stage in 14 of the

last 15 seasons, while the women’s team has landed there a record 22 consecutive sea-sons. Indoors, Myles contributed to the coaching of four All-Americans. Junior Da-vid McCarthy earned first team All-American status in the men’s 3000-meters, junior Julian Matthews gained Second-Team honors in the men’s 1500-meters, and sophomore Shelby Greany and junior Hannah Davidson achieved Second-Team accolades in the women’s 3000. Matthews later matched his Second-Team accomplishment outdoors, again in the 1500. Before Providence, Myles served as an Assistant Coach for Brown University's Cross Country / Track and Field programs from 2007-2010. On the East Side, he oversaw the training for the men's distance and mid-distance runners. Myles was a 2001 graduate of LaSalle University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. As a five-year member of cross country/track & field team, Myles was a nine-time All-Conference member, a five-time All District team member, and a 1998 NCAA in-dividual qualifier in cross country. Myles was a member of LaSalle's 1999 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championship team, and was also selected as a 1999 Academic All-American. In 2001, he was selected as the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year.

7 - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS

2012-13 MEN'S OUTLOOK

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRYThe 2012 Providence College cross country team

will return three of its top seven from 2011 with an ad-dition up front. Leading the young team will be senior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) after a redshirt season in 2011, and an individual win at the BIG EAST Cham-pionships two years ago.

Sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) won’t be far behind after his sensational rookie season as a Friar. He posted a 28th-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships and a 17th-place finish at the Northeast Regional Championships.

The force behind the men’s team is made up of a number of returners who will be stepping up this season. Sophomore Ben Connor (Derby, England) will return af-ter a steady improvement this past cross country season.

Rounding out the team scoring will be seniors Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass) and Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.) who finished 48th and 49th, respectively at the BIG EAST Championships this past year. They will both look to improve on last year’s performances and cap off successful and consistent careers as Friars.

Also competing for scoring opportunities are ju-nior Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales), senior Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand) and sophomore Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.). The three will work to be key components in the Friars’ 2012 success.

Also expected to play a key role are freshmen Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England), Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass).

The goal, as with each season, is to be a competi-tive force in the BIG EAST Conference and qualify for the NCAA Championships.

CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK - 8

MEN'S TRACK & FIELDThe goal for the 2012-2013 men’s indoor and outdoor track and

field program is to qualify as many athletes as possible for the BIG EAST, NCAA East Preliminary Round and NCAA Championships.

In 2012, the Friars were led through the indoor season by senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland). After winning the 3,000 meters to capture the BIG EAST title, he came back that same day to anchor his team to a second BIG EAST title in the distance medley relay. McCarthy capped off a stellar season for the Friars as the sole repre-sentative for the men at the NCAA Indoor Championships by placing ninth in the mile.

Senior teammate Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) ran a season-best time of 3:59.34 in the mile, narrowly missing the NCAA Indoor Championships qualifying mark of 3:57.90. Matthews finished a strong third in the 1,000 meters at the BIG EAST Indoor Champion-ship and helped his team to the distance medley relay title. Matthews finished his NCAA outdoor season after advancing to the semifinal in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. He will return for the 2012-2013 indoor season to complete his career as a Friar.

Senior Dominic Channon will be returning for the Friars after a redshirt indoor season in 2011-2012. During the 2012 outdoor sea-son, Channon qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the 5,000 meters. Channon will look toward qualifying for the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters, respectively. He finished fourth at the BIG EAST indoor Champion-ships in the mile as a freshman in 2009.

Sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) will return after an outstanding first year. As a freshman, Quinn ran an impressive leg to aid the distance medley relay team to their win at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. Quinn will look to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round and hopes to earn a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Also expected to improve and compete at a high level at BIG EAST Championships and rounds of the NCAA Championships are seniors Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass) and Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.) who both competed in the 10,000 meters this past outdoor season and will aim to better their performances at the longer distances and attempt to qualify for the first round of the NCAA Championships. Teammate Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand) will compete in the mile and the 1,500 meters while looking to be a scoring member at BIG EAST Championships and qualifying for the NCAA East Pre-liminary Round.

Junior Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales) will run the 5,000 meter event during the outdoor season. He will be looking to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round and be a scoring member of the BIG EAST squad. Sophomore teammate Liam Hillery (Smith-field, R.I.) will be starting where he left off last spring with a 14:37.72 clocking at the Brown Invitational. He also will look to contest the 5,000 meters and make vast improvements this coming season.

Incoming freshmen that are sure to set an important tone for their careers as Friars are Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England), Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.). 19 - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS

2011-12 WOMEN'S OUTLOOK

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRYThe Providence College women’s cross country team looks to return

seven of its top nine finishers from the 2011 BIG EAST Championships. At the BIG EAST Championships the women finished second ahead of the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Champion, Georgetown University.

Leading the Friars this year will be three of the top four women from the 2011 season. Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.), a four-time All-American (one in cross-country, one in indoor track and two in outdoor track) will be returning. As a sophomore, Greany became a cross country All-American with an outstanding 12th-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships and a third place effort at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. Returning alongside Greany will be juniors Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand). Sisson em-barks on her second cross country season as a Friar. Sisson competed for the University of Wisconsin in 2010, leading the Badgers to the Big Ten, NCAA Regional and NCAA team titles. In 2011 with the Friars, Sisson placed fourth at the BIG EAST Championships. Nagel finished sixth at the 2011 BIG EAST Championships and placed ninth at the 2011 NCAA Regional Championships.

Also returning for Providence, senior Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) will provide experience for the team in her final cross country season. Junior Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) also will provide depth. Thek competed at the 2010 World Cross Country Championships as a member of the Australian Junior Team and was the Australian Junior Cross Country Champion (2009). Junior Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.) and sophomore Julie Solimine (Mass.) also will be returning.

Four incoming freshman will be major contributors this year for the Friars. Sarah Mary Collins, born in Cork, Ireland and currently a resident of Basel, Switzerland, will be joining the long list of international athletes to compete for Providence. Collins is both the Irish and Switzerland Junior Cross Country Champion. Two New Yorkers, Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.), also will be joining the Friars. Mullins was a Footlocker cross country finalist in 2010 and 2011 and fin-ished fourth at the New York Federation Cross Country Championships. Sischo was an All-American in cross country in her sophomore, junior and senior years. She also was a member of the Fayetteville-Manlius cross country team that won Nike Cross Country Nationals each of her four years in high school. Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) will be moving up the road to Providence from La Salle Academy. Keating is a three-time individual State Cross Country Champion and has the 3,000 meter indoor and outdoor state record.

With a mix of experience and fresh new legs, the Friars will look to get back to the NCAA Championships held in Kentucky on November 17.

2011-12 WOMEN'S OUTLOOK

WOMEN'S TRACKThe Friars look forward to another stellar indoor and outdoor track

season this year.Returning will be 2012 All-Americans, Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.)

and Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo). Greany, after redshirting the 2012 indoor season, came back to run the 3,000 meter steeplechase during the outdoor season. She finished with Second Team All-America honors after she placed 10th at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Champion-ships. Greany also won the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the BIG EAST Championships. This season, she will be focusing on the 3,000 and 5,000 meters in indoor track and the 5,000 meters and 3,000 meter steeplechase in outdoor track.

Emily Sisson won a BIG EAST title in the 5,000 meters during the outdoor season. Sisson ran several impressive 5,000 meter races, gaining a bid to the 2012 USA Olympic Trials in late June. At the trials she made the final, finishing 12th in a time of 15:34.68. In addition to her BIG EAST title and Olympic trial achievements, Sisson competed at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. At the indoor championships she finished 12th in the 3,000 meters, earning Second Team All-America honors. In outdoor track, she finished fourth in the 5,000 meters earning First Team All-America honors. She will be focusing on the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters this season.

Senior Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.), will be aiming to lower personal bests in the 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. Roecker made her debut in the 10,000 meters at the 2012 BIG EAST Champion-ships where she placed 10th. Junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) also will be returning to compete with a focus on the 5,000 meters. Before red-shirting the outdoor season, Nagel finished second in the 5,000 meters at the 2012 BIG EAST Indoor Championships. In addition to Roecker and Nagel, juniors Grace Thek (Melbourne Australia) and Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.) and sophomore Julie Solimine (Haverhill, Mass.) also will be returning and each will focus on the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

Incoming freshmen Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.) will compete primarily in the 800 and 1,500 meters for Providence. Keating holds the 3,000 meter indoor and outdoor state record in Rhode Island and was the outdoor track State Champion in the 800 meters in 2010 and 2012. Sischo finished fourth at Nike Cross Country Nationals and earned All-America honors in cross country dur-ing three straight seasons. Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Katie Powell (Wrentham, Mass.) will be debuting in the mile indoor and the 3,000 meters outdoor. Mullins was a Footlocker cross country finalist in 2010 and 2011, while Powell finished second in the Massachusetts State cross country meet. Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) also will be joining the Friars. Collins holds the Irish Junior 5,000 meter record, is the 1,500 meter and 5,000 meter Irish Junior Champion and finished 13th at the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain. She will be focusing on the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

As in years passed, the goal for this team is to qualify as many athletes as possible for BIG EAST, NCAA East Regional Championships and the NCAA Championships.

SUCCESS AT PROVIDENCE

20 BIG EAST TITLES

Marie McMahon '98 finished her career at Providence as one of the most prolific runners in Friar history. She was a 10-time All-American, led the 1995 Friar cross country team to its first national championship and competed in the Olympic Games in 1996 and 2004.

Mark Carroll '95 won the NCAA Indoor 5,000 meter title in 1995 and was a six-time All-American. He competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

The 1995 Women’s Cross Country Team captured Providence College’s first NCAA team title under the direction of Ray Treacy.

Kim Smith '05 is the only Friar to capture four NCAA titles. She ended her career at Providence by winning the 2004 NCAA Cross Country individual title. At the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track Championship, Smith captured the 5,000 meters (15:14.18) and the 3,000 meters (8:49.18), setting NCAA records in both events. She ran for New Zealand at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in the 5,000 meters, the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the 10,000 meter and the 2012 London Olympic Games in the Marathon.

Keith Kelly, a five-time All-American, captured the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championship.

Gladys Ganiel is a six-time Academic All-American and four-time BIG EAST Scholar Athlete, who earned the prestigious NCAA Walter Byers Award her senior year. She graduated from PC with a 3.98 cumulative grade point average and a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Amy Rudolph '95 is a 10-time All-American, Rudolph won two NCAA titles in 1994 (indoor mile, outdoor 1,500 meters). In 1996, she established the American record in the 5,000 meters (14:56).

CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK - 49

1991 4 X 1,500 Relay Team - Geraldine Hendricken ’92, Anita Philpott ’91, Head Coach Ray Treacy, Geraldine Nolan ’92 and Natalie Davey ’94 celebrate after establishing a world record in the 4 X 1,500 meter relay at the 1991 Penn Relays.

The 1995 Women’s Cross Country Team captured Providence College’s first NCAA team title on November 20, 1995 in Ames, Iowa. Moira Harrington ’96, Maria McCambridge ’98, Marie McMahon ’97 and Susan Murnane ’97 earned All-America honors. The team won all seven of its meets that season, including the BIG EAST and ECAC championships.

1981 Men’s Cross Country Team – Led by three runners in the top-25, the Friar harriers completed one of their greatest seasons ever by finishing second behind UTEP at the NCAA Championship at Wichita, Kan. It still stands as one of the highest finishes ever for a men’s team at Providence College at any NCAA Championship. Ray Treacy (11th), Steve Binns (15th) and Brendan Quinn (22nd) all earned All-America honors. Richard Mulligan (48th) and Richard O’Flynn (55th) also scored for the Friars. PC posted an 8-0 record for the season in dual meets. The

Friars also captured the BIG EAST, IC4A and New England titles.

1982 Men’s Cross Country Team – PC followed up its incredible second-place finish at the 1981 NCAA Championship with another second-place finish in 1982. Three Friars finished in the top-20. Brendan Quinn (11th), Steve Binns (15th) and Richard O’Flynn (17th) all earned All-America accolades. Charlie Breagy (61st) and Jimmy Fallon (85th) also scored for PC. Providence recorded a 10-0 mark for the season. PC also won its fourth consecutive BIG EAST title, its 13th consecutive New England crown and its second consecutive IC4A title.

1990 Women’s Cross Country Team - With three runners in the top-20, the Friars placed second at the 1990 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Other than the team’s 1995 NCAA title, the 1990 squad’s second-place finish is one of the top accomplishments for a women’s team at Providence College. Sinead Delahunty (10th), Geraldine Hendricken (13th) and Anita Philpot (19th) all earned All-America accolades for PC. Mary Mullane (75th) and Bridget Bowers (109th), two walk-ons, were the fourth and fifth scorers for the Friars. During

the season, the squad placed second at the BIG EAST Championship, third at the ECAC Championship and won the New Englands.

Barry Brown '67 earned All-America honors in cross country in 1965. It marked the first All-America accolade at Providence College for a member of the cross country/track team.

Bob Amato '63 was one of the most successful coaches in the history of Providence College. A former Friar runner, Amato coached the PC cross country and track programs for 15 years (1969-85). He is credited with starting the flow of world-class runners from Ireland and England to Smith Hill. Beginning with Michael O’Shea in 1973, Amato brought in other greats such as John Treacy, Geoff Smith, Steve Binns, Ray Treacy and Brendan Quinn. He established Providence College as one of the most dominant cross country and track programs in the country. During his tenure, the Friars finished second at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in 1981 and 1982 and placed in the top-10 seven times. The Friars captured five of the first six BIG EAST Cross Country titles under Amato and recorded an unbeaten streak of 118 dual

meets under his guidance. A 10-time New England Cross Country Coach of the Year, Amato compiled a career record of 162-14-1 in cross country. Inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

Michael O’Shea '77 was the first Irish athlete to compete at Providence College. O’Shea captured PC’s first ever IC4A title. He won the 1976 outdoor IC4A 5,000 meter title. O’Shea earned two All-America accolades in cross country in 1974 and 1976 as a Friar. O’Shea was a member of the 4 x mile relay team that established the Providence College record of 16:20.90 in 1977. He is in the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame. A native of Limerick, Ireland, O’Shea competed for Ireland in the 1980 Olympics in the 5,000 meters.

Mick Byrne '78 has achieved success as a student-athlete and a coach. The Dublin, Ireland native ran for the Friars in the 1970s and was one of Bob Amato’s early recruits. In April of 1977, he was part of the Friar 4 x mile relay team that established a school record of 16:20.90 that still exists today. After his time at Providence College, Byrne became head coach of the Iona Gaels from 1989-2008. In 2008, he became head coach at the University of Wisconsin, leading the badgers to a fourth place finish at the NCAAs.

Gerry Deegan is one of five Friars to ever win a NCAA title. In 1978, Deegan captured the NCAA Indoor two-mile run. He earned All-America honors in cross country in 1977 after finishing third at the NCAA Championship. He also received All-America accolades during the 1978 indoor season (2 mile run) and the outdoor season where he placed second in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Championship.

TOP NAMES/PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

The following is a list of some of the greatest names and teams in the history of Providence College men's and women's cross country/track and field.

50 - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS

Dan Dillon '80 was one of the top U.S. runners to ever compete for the Friars. A two-time All-American in cross country (1977 and 1978), he participated in four NCAA Cross Country Championships in his career at Providence. In 1997, Dillon was inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame. A two-time New England Champion in track (1977 outdoor six-mile run) and cross country (1978 champion), he captured the 1980 BIG EAST indoor title in the 3,000 meters. Dillon competed for the U.S. in two World Cross Country Championships and posted a 13th-place finish in 1980 in Paris, France.

Ray Treacy '82 has been a key ingredient to the highly successful cross country and track programs at PC. One of only four men to ever serve as head coach of the prestigious Friar program, Treacy began his career as a three-time All-American and three-time BIG EAST champion runner for the Friars. PROVIDENCE COLLEGE

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE Responding to the needs of Rhode Island, the Dominican Order of Preachers made a special

commitment to the state in 1917 and founded Providence College — the only institution of higher learning in North America that is conducted by the Order. In 94 years, Providence College has steadily moved to a position of national prominence, while maintaining a personal, community-like atmosphere that fosters growth and development among its student population.

Providence College’s rich heritage dates back to the origins of the Dominican Order in Spain. Through the ages, the Dominican Friars became known as the “champions of the faith,” spreading the gospel message through the centuries into every corner of the globe. Today, Dominican Friars continue to spread the gospel in a wide range of remote areas of the world, to teach at every level

of the United States educational system. With the Dominican tradition as its

foundation, Providence College focuses on developing the entire person through its values-oriented education. The college seeks to complement a student’s knowl-edge with knowledge of his own values — values that will remain the foundation for sound judgement throughout a lifetime.

To that end, Providence College aims to relate its curriculum to the problems of contemporary society, offering diverse programs of study that remain grounded in the liberal arts. Students may choose from some 60 concentrations ranging from computer science to labor relations to theatre arts.

In addition, qualified students who wish to structure a program not specifical-ly provided under the regular concentra-tions may develop their own program with the approval of the dean of the college.

As part of the core curriculum, all students take a two-year, team-taught course, Development of Western Civiliza-tion (DWC) which integrates the study of

literature, philosophy, history and religious studies through the ages into a cohesive interdisciplinary unit.

Situated just on the fringe of downtown Providence, the College’s location enables students to have easy access to the many social, cultural, educational and recreational amenities of urban life - the Providence Public Library; entertainment at the Providence Performing Arts Center; sporting events, entertainment and trade shows at the Dunkin' Donuts Center and the Providence Convention Center, Providence Place Mall and dozens of fine restaurants. With several other major educational institutions located in Providence, the city has become a hub of collegiate activity.

THE MISSION OF THE COLLEGE

Providence College is a primarily undergraduate, liberal arts, Catholic institu-tion of higher education. Committed to fostering academic excellence through the sciences and humanities, the College provides a variety of opportunities for intellectual, social, moral and spiritual growth in a supportive environment.

The College actively cultivates intellectual, spiritual, ethical and aesthetic values within the context of the Judaeo-Christian heritage. These values are nurtured by the unique tradition of the Dominican Order which emphasizes quality teaching and scholarship.

Providence College recognizes the unity of the human family that proceeds from its one Creator. It therefore encourages the deepest respect for the essential dignity, freedom and equality of every person and welcomes qualified women and men from all religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Providence College prepares its students to be responsible and productive citizens to serve in their own society and the greater world community.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION

The mission of the Providence College In-tercollegiate Athletics program is to foster the personal development and education of young men and women through their participation in NCAA Division I athletics.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION

ROBERT G. DRISCOLL, JR.ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT /

ATHLETICS DIRECTORSince Robert G. Driscoll was hired as the Associate

Vice President for Athletics on November 2, 2001, Provi-dence College athletics has experienced unprecedented growth in academic and athletic performance, fundrais-ing, facilities and community involvement. Driscoll has reinvigorated the Providence College Athletics program, leading the charge with a vision of creating one of the most respected programs in the nation, where each student-athlete

graduates and has the opportunity to compete for champion-ships. Driscoll was recognized for his efforts on June 10, 2008 as he was named the 2007-08 Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year for the Division I Northeast Region at the 43rd National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Annual Convention. He also was honored in 2009 by his alma mater, Ithaca College, where he received the Distinguished Sport Industry Leader award during alumni weekend. Most recently, he was elected as Third Vice President of the Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association.

In addition to academic and athletic excellence, Driscoll has placed a strong em-phasis on the enhancement of facilities at Providence. Driscoll worked strategically with lead officials in the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island to help spearhead an $80 million renovation of the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, which is home to the Friar men’s basketball team. The renovated Dunkin’ Donuts Center is once again a state-of-the-art facility that seats over 12,600 fans. Renovations have enhanced the game-day experience by adding 20 luxury boxes, new seats, a video scoreboard, sound system, updated restaurant and concession stands, team store, locker rooms and new weight training and fitness areas. As a result, Providence College, the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, the city of Providence and the state of Rhode Island hosted the First and Second Rounds of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, which was a complete success.

In March of 2012, renovations of Alumni Hall began and were completed in September. Alumni Hall, which is the practice facility for men’s basketball and home courts for women’s basketball and volleyball, is now equipped with a new ceiling, light-ing, air conditioning and heating systems, upper level windows and new seating in the upper and lower arena. The entire communications and data systems were overhauled and a video scoreboard was installed, along with an enhanced audio system for public address and in-game entertainment needs.

In addition, the College gained approval for renovations to Schneider Arena, which began in August of 2012. When completed, Schneider Arena, home of the Friar men’s and women’s hockey teams, will have new locker rooms, sports medicine room, a strength and conditioning complex and an equipment room. The College also will build a state-of-the-art soccer and lacrosse complex adjacent to Schneider Arena as well as a new softball complex and tennis courts on lower campus.

The men’s soccer program received a generous donation from John Murphy ‘80 and renovated the soccer offices. The Joyce Murphy Soccer Suite opened in Novem-ber of 2008. The suite features new offices, meeting spaces and a lounge area equipped with flat screen televisions. The men’s soccer locker room also was refurbished thanks to a donation by Kerry and Karl Anderson ‘87. With the creation of the BIG EAST Lacrosse Conference, the lacrosse offices were renovated to go along with a new locker room. The volleyball locker room also was renovated and a new women’s basketball video room was created. In addition, the track/cross country offices and the women’s soccer offices also were refurbished. The Helen Bert Student-Athlete Study Lounge, which was opened in 2007, was recently expanded. Thanks to a generous donation from Judge Bill Leary ’60 and his wife, Emily, the Friends of Friar Hockey Room also was renovated at Schneider Arena. The Bill and Emily Leary Friends of Friar Room includes plasma televisions, high-top counters and meeting space for the teams. In addition, a media library room displaying the history of Friar Hockey was made possible thanks to a generous gift from Bob O’Connor ’62.

In August of 2007, the Concannon Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art $18 million facility, was opened. The Concannon Fitness Center is adjacent to the $6 million Lennon Family Field (Astroturf facility), which was completed in August 2005. The Fitness Center houses the Friars’ Jimmy Walker Strength and Conditioning Center as well as administrative and coaching offices, conference rooms and locker rooms. The construction project also provides the department with a state-of-the-art sports medicine complex and a new ticket office. The Canavan Sports Medicine Center, which was completed in August of 2008, is equipped with a hydrotherapy room, which includes a SwimEx rehab pool and two plunges for cold/hot therapy.

Driscoll served as the NCAA Ice Hockey Championship Committee Chair in 2010-11. He also represents the BIG EAST’s Athletic Directors on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, serves on the BIG EAST Finance Committee and the HOCKEY EAST Television Negotiations Committee. He previously served on the NCAA Divi-sion I Management Council and was an NCAA Fellows Programs Executive Mentor.

At Cal, Driscoll served as the Execu-tive Associate Athletic Director and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department as well as overseeing football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s water polo, rugby, strength training, equipment and the sports medicine programs.

Driscoll was hired at Cal as the Associate Athletic Director for Student Services, a position he held for five years. He then assumed the position of Executive Associ-ate Athletic Director, at which point he was responsible for the administration of 27 varsity sports. During his tenure at Cal, he oversaw 25 club sports, a staff of 250 and a $36 million budget. Prior to coming to Providence, he served as the Acting Executive Director for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports. During his tenure, Cal won over 20 national championships, competed in the Citrus, Copper, Alamo and Aloha Bowls, NCAA Basketball Tournaments and the College World Series for baseball and softball. The Bears also finished as high as 12th in the NACDA Directors’ Cup.

Before arriving at Cal, Driscoll served six years (1981-87) as the Athletic Director and Chair of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Intramural Sports at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. Prior to arriving at Mills, Driscoll was Assistant Athletic Director and Head Baseball and Hockey Coach at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. from 1977-81. He earned his Master of Science in Physical Education/Psychology of Sports from Ithaca in 1975.

A native of West Concord, Mass., Driscoll was inducted into the inaugural class of Concord-Carlisle High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame (football, ice hockey and baseball) in 1993.
