The 2012-13 Delaware State University Eques-trian Media Guide is designed to assist mem-bers of the media in its coverage of Hornet Equestrian.

The DSU Athletics Media Relations office maintains information on all current student-athletes, as well as historical information on previous athletes and the program in general. Any additional information, including inter-view requests, releases and photographs may be obtained by contacting the DSU Athletic Media Relations Office. Please take a moment to review the following policies and services that are intended to assist you in your cover-age of Hornet Equestrian this season.

INTERVIEWSALL interviews should be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance through the DSU Athletic Media Relations Office.

The best time to interview head coach Jennifer Ridgely or student-athletes in-season varies. Please contact Maggie Hayon with further information. There are NO player interviews prior to meets.

Please call at least one day in advance for all phone interviews. The DSU Athletic Media Relations Office will NOT distribute home/cell numbers for players or coaches. All phone in-terviews should be conducted during those times reserved for general media interview sessions. Calling players at their homes or on their cell phones will NOT be tolerated.

THE DSU DORMITORIES, LOCKER ROOM, WEIGHT ROOM AND TRAINING ROOM ARE OFF LIMITS TO THE MEDIA AT ALL TIMES.

HChead coach | mcdaniel ‘91 ‘98 | seventh season at dsu | seventh season overall

Jennifer Ridgely is in her seventh season as the head coach of the Dela-ware State University equestrian team.

In 2012, junior Breann Huyett was named the first equestrian All-Amer-ican in DSU school history, awarded by the National Collegiate Eques-trian Association. Additionally, the Hornets racked up first time hon-ors as three riders (Brittni Collins-Rideout, Caroline Foltz and McKenzie Trueba) earned NCEA All-Academic awards. While not a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference-sponsored sport, DSU equestrian placed eight rid-ers on the 2012 Commissioner’s All-Academic team.

“I am so proud and excited that we have finally made our mark both athletically and academically to receive these honors,” stated Ridgely. “It takes a dedicated, mature, young woman to be able to achieve aca-demic success while simultaneously competing at such a high level.

Under her leadership in 2011, Del State sent both its English and West-ern squads to the Varsity Equestrian National Championship. The Eng-lish squad had previously competed in the 2008 and 2009 competitions while the Western team earned its first selection in 2010.

Since its inception in 1998, Ridgely has grown the team from five riders to over 25 in 2012. In the school’s first season, the English team quali-fied for the Varsity Equestrian National Champions.

Ridgely sees the Hornets making their mark each year on the NCAA equestrian circuit.

“We are not just here to ride, we are here to win,” Ridgely commented. “Before you have a strong house, you must have a strong foundation. My experience and connections in the equine world, my hard work eth-ic and my desire to win will definitely help me build that foundation for a solid program at Delaware State.”

Ridgely brings nearly 30 years of equine business and competition ex-perience to the Hornet equestrian team. She also has experience in equine judging, horse training and an expansive knowledge in training riders in various disciplines.

As a youth competitor, Ridgely excelled on the Quarter Horse circuit, competing and placing at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress and Youth World Show.

In addition to coaching full-time at Delaware State, Ridgely currently co-owns and operates Wicked R Western Productions, Inc. with her hus-band, Randy, where they offer riding lessons, overnight Dude Ranch Camps and much more. Before joining DSU, Ridgely coordinated man-aged, and implemented the daily activities of the 60 acre Agri-Tourism business, the first of its kind in the state of Delaware.

Ridgely is a native of Camden, Del., and a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School. She received her B.A. in 1991 and her Master’s in 1998, both from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). Ridgely was an elementary school teacher in Delaware and Maryland prior to her time at DSU. She and her husband are the proud parents of two beautiful “cowgirls,” Peyton (14) and Rylee (10).

Amanda Hotz graduated from Delaware State University in May 2011 with a degree Agriculture Business and continues to work with the equestrian team as an assistant after an illustrious career riding for the Hornets.

Growing up in Voorhees, N.J., she has had easy access to many of the East Coast horse shows, where she has a great background in the hunt-er jumper world. As a hunter jumper, Hotz has qualified for Marshall and Sterling, NAL, Congress and Zone in addition to showing at Devon Horse Show in Pennsylvania and placing in the Top 10.

Hotz began riding horses at the tender age of five as a barrel racer and eventually decided to ride the junior hunters. In 2005, she placed third at the Marshall and Sterling Classic Hunter Hack.

Just this past year, Hotz rejoined the jumping carrier after an abrupt halt her junior year of high school following a bad fall. By a turn of events, her hunter trainer of 15 years introduced her to Rocky Dare, a western legend. Hotz started showing competitively in the western ring by her senior year of high school. She accomplished much show-ing with Rocky and a lot on her own as well.

Hotz has placed in the Top 10 in the Congress Limited Non-Pro Reserve Champion for the Eastern Pennsylvania reigning horse association, fifth in the USEF 2009, sixth in the USEF 2010 and has successfully shown at the Futurity and Derby.

To top a great 2010 season, Hotz qualified in the North American Young and Junior Rider’s World Games in Lexington, Ky. and finished with a silver medal. She has been nationally recognized for both the Western and English Equestrian sport.

As a relatively new sport at Delaware State, Hotz was a member of the first DSU Western team to compete in the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in 2010. She joined the team in December 2007 and won all four reining competitions for the spring semester. In 2011, she finished fourth at the Pin Oak Collegiate Invitational.

Since graduation, Hotz has worked in Mississippi and around Delmarva for various trainers broadening her horizons and looking forward to a successful coaching career.

E2011-12: Recorded school-record ride of 95 in Equitation to earn MVP honors against Miami (Ohio)/Ohio State at Gambler’s Choice on March 17 … also recorded an Equitation score of 92 to earn MVP honors against South Carolina on March 16 … fin-ished season with three total MVP awards and an overall record of 10-10-2 … represented Delaware State at the annual Pin Oak Invitational, held in Katy, Texas, on March 24, where she placed seventh overall … tallied five 80-plus point rides … won first col-legiate team point of career on Sept. 24 with a 74-point Equita-tion ride against Fresno State.

The Delaware State University Women's Equestrian Team is always looking for quality horses to join our program. We keep a herd of about 15-20 head, consisting of roughly 10 hunter seat horses and 10 western horses. Most of our horses come to us with extensive show careers. Our western horses are mostly Quarter Horses and Paint Horses. Our hunter seat horses consist of "A" Show quality Thor-oughbreds and Warmbloods. Horses are ridden during team practices and are used for home compe-titions. On show day, horses are ridden by DSU riders as well as riders from the opposing team. Our horses are subject to the affection and attention of 25+ riders on the Delaware State Equestrian Team.

We are looking for horses that have previous show experience and specialized training. In addition, they must have the temperament to tolerate various styles of talented riders. Western horses need training and show experience in the horsemanship or reining/cowhorse classes. Hunter seat horses to be used for jumping need to have been shown successfully in three-foot and higher hunter, equita-tion, and/or jumper divisions. Because our fence classes are judged on equitation, we are looking for horses that are quiet enough to be used in equitation classes. We also have a need for horses that are capable of performing upper-level flat work that includes such maneuvers as shoulder-in, haunches-

in, counter canter, collections and lengthening of gaits, all within a dressage ring. The Delaware State Equestrian Team does not start and break colts, though green horses may be accepted in the program if they have a solid foundation with potential in our events. Horses accepted into the program must be sound and able to be ridden on a daily basis with limited maintenance.

We currently request a 10-day trial for all possible donations (though exceptions can apply). This is to ensure that your horse will work for our program and that your horse will remain comfortable and willing while having multiple riders (all very advanced and accomplished equestrians). We want to give your horse a new home and job for as long as he or she is able. During the trial, we agree upon and sign a Horse Loan Agreement between you and the Delawaer State Equestrian Team, which is similar to a lease agreement.

INDOOR ARENAThe 100’ x 200’ clear span indoor arena allows for all weather riding. The arena is watered and harrowed regularly to limit dust and to refresh footing. New footing was installed in the spring of 2008. The indoor arena also has lights for night riding.

OUTDOOR ARENAThe 150’ x 300’ outdoor sand arena is surrounded by a 3’ fence and is equipped with jumps.

PASTURESThe pastures are reseeded yearly. Soil samples and seed types are managed to provide high yeild, high quality pasutres. Great care and attention is provided to managing the fields. Seed type, soil quality, and fertilizer needs are all checked each year by way of soil samples and consultation with local university agricultural experts.

The Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Center features an 18-stall barn, 10-stall barn, three tack stalls and a wash stall with hot water. An on-site laundry room, heated lounge and restrooms are also located on the property.

All stalls include sliding doors and rubber mats. Both indoor and outdoor arenas feature elevated judges stands, along with an on-site public ad-dress system for events. The 100’ x 200’ clear span indoor arena allows for all-weather riding in addition to a 150’ x 300’ outdoor sand arena when weather allows.

As the home of the DSU Hornets Equestrian Team, the facilities are equipped for Western and English riding.

JOHN MELNICK | OWNER/OPERATOR

John Melnick has been an avid horse enthusiast ever since his daughter, Kim, started riding at a young age. He has supported her as a young rider in Pony Club and then when her teams traveled to national competitions. Melnick volun-teered with the Pony Club and Fair Hill In-ternational to get a better understanding of horses and competition. As Kim’s in-terests changed from Pony Club to more hunt seat and equitation competitions, he worked tirelessly to find horses and train-ers to support her needs. Melnick has educated himself to be more proficient in the equine world and continues to further his learning through industry magazines, compe-titions and talking with whoever will lend an ear.

When Kim took the position of assistant coach of the Delaware State University Equestrian Team (2007-09), Melnick made sure that she and the team were equipped with the tools they needed to succeed. In September 2007, when Magical Acres at Becher’s Brook was set to be auctioned off, Melnick decided that he watned to make the biggest gesture of support towards his daughter and the equestrian team by purchasing the 45+ acre facility in Dover, Del. He took a gamble in the purchase, hence the name “Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Cen-ter.” Melnick has put every effort in making sure that his facility fully supports the equestrian team and all of their needs. He has made many improvements to the property to make it more appealing to prospective students and their parents, visiting teams and current team members.

In addition to housing the DSU equestrian team at GCEC, Melnick is the appointed president of the DSU Equestrian Booster Club. Coach Ridgely felt that he would make an excellent booster club president as he has already shown that he supports the team through thick and thin.

DIRECTIONS

From U.S. 13 (DuPont Highway):Turn westward on Del. 42 (also known as Sev-en Hickories Road). Drive approximately three miles through the town of Cheswold, past the Delaware Air Park.

While on Del. 42, Del. 15 will merge and com-bine with Del. 42. As you are driving west on Del. 42/Del 15, you will pass DSUs Hickory Hill Farm facility, make the next right, which is both Brenford Road and Del. 15.

As you go north on Brenford Road/Del 15, there will be a fork in the road in which Bren-ford Road veers to the right and Del. 15 veers to the left. You will veer to the left and continue on Del. 15 (which is also called Mt. Friendship Road). Right after the fork in the road, look to you left of the Becher’s Brook residential de-velopment and turn left there (Grey Fox Lane).

From Del. 8/West Dover:From Del. 8 turn north onto Kenton Road/Del. 15 (Citizens Bank is on the corner).

Continue on Kenton Road/Del. 15 about four miles north. Turn right at Del. 42. At that point Del. 15 and Del. 42 merge and share that route. As you are driving west on Del. 42/Del 15, you will pass DSUs Hickory Hill Farm facility, make the next right, which is both Brenford Road and Del. 15.

As you go north on Brenford Road/Del 15, there will be a fork in the road in which Bren-ford Road veers to the right and Del. 15 veers to the left. You will veer to the left and continue on Del. 15 (which is also called Mt. Friendship Road). Right after the fork in the road, look to you left of the Becher’s Brook residential de-velopment and turn left there (Grey Fox Lane).

MOST first time visitors have trouble with the turn related to Beacher’s Brook. Beacher’s Brook is a housing development, with the Gambler’s Choice Facilities located within the development. Please keep a close eye out for the two Beacher’s Brook signs as these are missed quite often.

Continue a little ways up Grey Fox Lane and you will run right into the Gamblers Choice Eques-trian Center; there will also be a sign that says Home of the DSU Women’s Equestrian Center.

Look for a driveway on the right side of the Equestrian Center; parking is available there.

In March 2012, Delaware State University junior Breann Huyett earned the first equestrian All-American award in school his-tory, as announced by the NCEA.

Huyett was one of four to earn All-American honors in the Rein-ing discipline with a record of 6-1-2 with two MVP awards and an average score of 71.4. She posted a season-high score in the event of 73.5 to earn MVP honors against Fresno State on Sept. 24. Huyett finished the year with an overall record of 7-11-2 with three total MVP honors, also competing in Equitation over Fences and Horsemanship.

"I am extremely proud of Breann," commented DSU head coach Jennifer Ridgely. "She has really matured as a student and rider this season. Breann is a strong competitor all-around and is the kind of rider that a coach loves because there isn't anything she can't handle. This is a huge accomplishment for our University."

The NCEA selection committee selects the top four riders to be named All-Americans. Honorable mention All-Americans will be selected that have a minimum 67-percent winning per-centage (excluding ties), competed in a minimum of five NCEA competitions and have an adjusted NRS score of 85 (flat), 90 (fences), 77 (reining) and 80 (horsemanship).

The Delaware State University equestrian team continued to rack up honors for the first time in school history during the 2011-12 season as three riders were named NCEA Academic Honorees.

“I am so proud and excited that we have finally made our mark both athletically and academically to receive these honors,” stated DSU head coach Jennifer Ridgely. “It takes a dedicated, mature, young woman to be able to achieve academic success while simultaneously competing at such a high level.”

Co-captain and senior Brittni Collins-Rideout (Denton, Md.) was one of 45 collegiate riders to be named to the NCEA Academic First Team. In order to receive First Team honors, a student-ath-lete must have competed in a minimum of 70 percent of their school’s competitions, not including demo or exhibition rides, and have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 while maintaining full-time enrollment in the previous spring and fall semesters, respectively.

Collins-Rideout earned a degree in Agriculture Business from Delaware State in May 2012.

Fellow senior and co-captain Caroline Foltz (Dover, Del.) was one of 37 collegiate riders to be named to the Second Team. Second Team honors are given to student-athletes who have competed in 60 percent of their school’s competitions and have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.

Foltz also earned a degree in Agriculture Business from DSU in May 2012.

Also earning Academic All-American honors was junior McKen-zie Trueba (Williams, Ariz.), who was recognized as an Honor-able Mention selection. Student-athletes who have competed in 50 percent of the team’s shows and have earned a cumula-tive GPA of at least 3.00 are named to the Honorable Mention team.

Trueba is majoring in studio art with the goals of becoming a professional photographer upon graduation in 2013.

Harry J. Sanchez, MSW, the Academic Counselor for the eques-trian team and stated, “Given the rigorous demands placed on our student-athletes to maintain excellence requires a very strong sense in managing the fine balance between ‘student first, athlete second. For our three equestrians to receive this recognition comes as no surprise to me. Brittni, Caroline and McKenzie have not only demonstrated a high level of academ-ic excellence in preparing themselves for their chosen career path, but have also shown individual commitment in maintain-ing the balance between being a student first and athlete sec-ond. We salute them for their recognition as NCEA Academic Honorees, not only for earning this award for the first time in school history, but more importantly, for their individual aca-demic achievements they so zealously earned.”

ABOUT EQUESTRIAN

In 1998, equestrian was classified as an NCAA emerging sport. Many people within the horse industry have united together to help advance the sport to full NCAA championship status. In order to attain this goal and hold a NCAA Equestrian Championship, there must be 40 Division I/II schools that sponsor equestrian as a varsity level program.

Currently 23 colleges and universities offer equestrian as a varsity sport and more continue to add the program each year.

The mission of Varsity Equestrian is to advance the sport of Equestrian from Emerging to Championship status with the NCAA by promoting the benefits of Equestrian to universities, riders, prospective student-athletes, parents, horse industry professionals and sponsors while developing the rules and competition format. HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPETITION FORMAT Competitions include Equitation on the Flat and Equitation over Fences in either the English or Hunter Seat discipline and Horsemanship and Reining in the Western discipline. Typically, five student-athletes per team will compete per event.

In head-to-head competitions, the scoring for Equitation on the Flat and Equitation over Fences will use a 100 point scale. The scoring for Horsemanship and Reining will use a 70 point scale.

Prior to competition, each of the horses, provided by the host school, is drawn to be riden by a student-athlete from the competing instituions.

EVENT EXPLANATIONS Equitation Over FencesEach student-athlete jumps the same predetermined course, usually consisting of eight to 10 jumps. The judge is looking at the student-athlete’s position, consistency of pace and accuracy of leads, turns and distances to the fences.

Equitation on the FlatA pattern consisting of nine maneuvers is performed within a rectangu-lar shaped arena marked by letters. Maneuvers are called for at specific letters and can be circles, transitions, serpentines or other moves. The judge is looking at the student-athlete’s position and effectiveness at guiding the horse through the individual maneuvers.

ReiningEach student-athlete rides the same pattern, performing such maneu-vers as spins, sliding stops, rollbacks and circles. The circles can be ei-ther large and fast or small and slow. The judge is looking for accuracy and correctness of maneuvers, spped for maneuver being performed and overall quality of the reining pattern.

HorsemanshipA predetermined pattern, consisting of nine maneuvers, is performed by each student-athlete. Consideration for scoring is based on quality of maneuvers, including 45 and 360 degree pivots, stops, backs, circles and consistency of pace at the jog, extended jog and lope. The student-athlete’s overall effectiveness and position in the saddle are also factors.

SCORING In order to earn a point, a student-athlete’s score must be higher than its opponent’s score on the same horse. If riders tie, no point is award-ed. At the end of each discipline, points are tallied to track a team’s overall score. Western and Hunter Seat points are totaled for each dis-cipline and combined to determine competition winner.

KEY TERMS Diagonals - The correct posting, up/down mostion, of the rider in se-quence with diagonal movement of the horse’s legs in the front.

Equitation/Horsemanship - In competitions, these indicate that rid-ers are being judged on their ability to controll and show the horse will maintaining the correct riding position. Intercollegiate student-ath-letes have the added challenge of competing on a horse determined at the draw which precedes the competition.

Figure Eight - Two circles connected by a change of direction, most often seen in Reining patterns.

Gait - Three ways - canter/lope, trot/jog or walk - by which a horse can move by lifting the feet in different order or rhythm.

Leads - They are determined at the canter/lope by which front foot is leading. Correct leads have the inside foreleg reaching furthest.

Order of Go - A list detailing the order in which riders will compete.

Roll Back - A tight turn performed between two fences in the Equi-tation over Fences event to show control of horse and the student-athlete’s ability to maintain a position throughout a turn. In Reining, a roll back is a 180 degree pivot with speed after a sliding stop.

Schooling - Practice time before the event, normally five minutes. Ad-ditionally, the horse will be warmed up, or prepared for the compe-tition using stretching exercises at various gaits, or practice jumps if necessary by student-athletes who will not compete the day of com-petition.

Slide Stop - In Reining, a smooth stop from the lope, in which the horse is suppose to balance on its back feet while the front feet con-tinue to move.

Candy Young is the first female to be named the Athletics Director at Delaware State University. She began her new duties on August 13, 2012.

Young has been involved in intercollegiate athletics for more than 30 years, including the last six as Head Track and Field/Cross Country Coach, Senior Woman Administrator (SWA), Assistant Athletics Director, Interim AD, Associate AD and Interim Senior Associate Athletics Direc-tor at Delaware State University.

As Interim Senior Associate Athletics Director, Young provided supervi-sion and administration of 14 sports, along with strength and condi-tioning, and equipment.

As a member of the athletic department’s senior staff team, she pro-vided leadership, guidance and decision making input. Young helped oversee 230 student-athletes, 20 coaching personnel, and an opera-tional budget of over $4 million. Young also served as supervisor of DSU’s “All Sports Camp”, the athletic department’s six-week summer youth camp program.

As SWA, she spearheaded several programs to help promote the ad-vancement of women in athletics. In 2010, Young helped to create the annual “Delaware Diamond Extravaganza,” which recognizes the con-tributions of Delawareans and those with ties to Delaware in women’s sports and education.

Young also serves as a delegate in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference where she is a representative of DSU in decision making processes. She was named chairperson of the MEAC “Woman of the Year” Committee selection process in 2010. Delaware State University’s Kalyn Washburn (2010) and Jazmyne Hefflefinger (2012) have been selected as the ME-AC’s Woman of the Year during Young’s tenure at DSU.

In 2011, Young was submitted as a candidate from the MEAC delega-tion to represent the conference at the national level, and received an appointment to the Amateurism Cabinet of the NCAA.

Within the University, Young submits her time as a liaison to Student Affairs, and the Long-Range Strategic Planning Monitoring Committee.

ADathletics director | first season | b.s. fairleigh dickinson ‘85 | m.s. delaware state ‘08

Prior to joining DSU, Young was an assistant track coach at The Ohio State University, University of Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, and Fairleigh Dick-inson, all NCAA Division I institutions. She also served as an assistant coach at the University of California in Pennsylvania, a Division II pro-gram.

While coaching track and field, she helped lead her teams to several Big East Conference Championship titles, ECAC titles, a host of individual Big Ten and Big East Conference Champions, NCAA All-Americans, and NCAA Champions. Her Shuttle Hurdle relay team won the Champion-ship of American title in 2000 for The Ohio State University, the only Penn Relay Championship award received by the women at The Ohio State University.

Young held a position on the Executive Committee for USA Track and Field for eight years. She was also assigned to the USA Track and Field Women’s Olympic team selection staff for two consecutive Olympic Games.

The 1985 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University is a four-time na-tional collegiate champion, USA Indoor National Champion, eight-time All-American and world record holder. She was a member of the inau-gural FDU Athletics Hall of Fame class.

Young is also a member of Beaver County and Western Pennsylvania Halls of Fame.

She earned her bachelor’s in biological education; and received a mas-ter’s in sports management from Delaware State University in 2008.

As a high school student Young made the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team as a 100-meter hurdler. She also broke the world indoor record for 55 meter hurdles, and was named Sports Illustrated National High School Athlete-of-the Year.

Young credits her success and mentoring to, Dr. Leroy Walker, Dr. Evie Dennis, Russ Rogers, Fred Thompson, Beverly Kearney, and her parents John and Gertie Young.

eric hartassociate athletics director for student-athlete servicesEric Hart resumed his role as the associate athletics director for student-athlete services in Au-gust 2012 after serving seven months as DSU’s Interim Director of Athletics. He is committed to the total well being of student-athletes and believes that graduating with a baccalaureate degree is the cornerstone of the student-athlete experience.

Under Hart’s leadership, Delaware State University student-athletes have boasted the high-est academic marks in school history. Delaware State University lead the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) with 121 Commissioner’s All-Academic team during the 2011-12 academic year. In 2011, Delaware State University inducted 39 student-athletes with a 3.40 cumulative grade point average or higher into Chi Alpha Sigma National Student-Athlete Honor Society.

Hart has helped guide three teams at Delaware State University to achieve scores of 1000 on the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate’s single year score (Women’s Soccer, Men’s Tennis and Vol-leyball). During the 2009-2010 APR cycle, Men’s Basketball saw a 134 point increase ontheir single year score. Hart and his staff have aspirations to see team improve upon their Aca-demic Progress Rate (single and multi-year scores).

Prior to his arrival to Delaware State University, he served as the associate director for academic services for student-athletes at Appalachian State University from 2006 until his departure in June 2009. He was the driving force in turning around a wrestling program that, prior to his ar-rival, had a cumulative grade point average of 2.05. In his last semester with the University, the team boasted a cumulative grade point average of 2.989. Women’s Soccer had never earned a

team cumulative grade point average above a 3.00 prior to Hart’s tenure, but they achieved this feat in three consecutive semesters under his leadership.

Hart helped guide 18-of-21 student-athletes from ASU to the winter 2009 Academic All-Confer-ence list. Additionally, he had 26-of-44 student-athletes earn spring 2009 Academic All-Confer-ence honors. His teams experienced success on the field as well. The ASU Footballteam won back-to-back National Championships and three consecutive Southern Conference Championships; the ASU Men’s Track and Field program won the indoor track and field cham-pionships in 2007, 2008, and 2009, outdoor championship in 2007 and 2008, and cross country won the conference championship in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 - all during Hart’s tenure.

Hart served as an academic counselor at The University of Georgia from 2004 - 2006, working with Men’s and Women’s Golf, Softball, Men’s Basketball, Equestrian, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field. He also worked as a graduate assistant for The University of Tennessee football pro-gram, and assisted in the marketing and game day operations for football and men’s basketball.

A native of Stoneville, N.C., Hart was a student-athlete at Appalachian State University and earned a B.S. in elementary education (‘97), a Master of Education in school counseling at the University of Georgia (‘99), and an Ed.S. in Counseling from the University of Tennessee (‘01).He is also a 2009 graduate of the NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males and Fe-males. He is married to Erin Hill of North Carolina, by way of Baton Rouge, La.

Pegjohngy Moses is entering her fifth season at Delaware State and 14th overall at working in athletics. She is responsible for athletics compliance, eligibility and stu-dent welfare.

Prior to her DSU appointment, Moses was assistant athletic director for compliance and senior woman administrator at the University of Texas-Pan American for four years.

Moses has also served in collegiate athletics compliance at Tennessee-Chattanooga, Central Florida, Cornell and Brown.

A native of Goldsboro, N.C., Moses earned a bachelor’s in political science/history from Duke University and law degree from Tulane.

dennis jonesassistant athletics director for media relations

Dennis Jones previously served as a staff writer, assistant sports information director and director of sports information since joining the Delaware State University staff in 1996. In addition, he has handled radio play-by-play duties for the Hornet football, and men’s and women’s basketball teams. He has assisted the NCAA, along with na-tional and local media for Delaware State’s national championship competitions in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, football, softball and bowlling.

He currently oversees the daily media relations and statistics for the university’s 18 sports.

Prior to joining the Delaware State staff, Jones was News/Sports Director at WDOV/WDSD Radio in Dover, Del. He joined the stations in 1981 as a reporter and was pro-moted to News/Sports Director in 1985. In addition to covering Delaware news and sports, Jones occasionally filed written and audio reports for the Associated Press, Mutual Broadcasting Network and United Press International during his tenure with

the stations. He also served as play-by-play announcer for high school football broad-casts on the stations from 1987 to 1996.

He also served as play-by-play announcer and color commentator for local cable tele-vision high school football and basketball broadcasts.

A graduate of Glassboro State (now Rowan) in New Jersey, Jones resides in Dover, Del. He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).

george robinsonassistant athletic director for marketing

A native of West Chester, Pa., George Robinson II has over 10 years of experience in marketing, sales, promotions and fundraising. He is an experienced fundraiser in event coordination, donor and corporate identification.

Prior to arriving at DSU, he served as Director of the Athletic Annual Fund for South-ern Illinois University, where he began in 2004.

Robinson has a diverse professional profile which includes stints as Marketing Assis-tant at the University of Florida and Assistant Director of Marketing and Promotions at Virginia Tech.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Grambling State Univer-sity and Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Norfolk State University.

Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA), housed on the second floor of the William C. Jason Library, serves as the academic arm of Delaware State University Athletics. The unit houses five full-time staff members, including an Associate Athletic Director, three Academic Counselors, and a Learning Specialist. Academic Services for Student-Athletes serves approximately 350 scholarship and non-scholarship athletes in 18 NCAA Division I sports.

The purpose of ASSA is to cultivate academic enrichment and shape student-athletes to be model citizens of the city of Dover and beyond. They will assist the student-athlete in the following areas: arranging tutoring, monitoring

academic success and progress toward a degree, assisting with personal goals and student life well-being. Their mission is to provide comprehensive services that will prepare our student-athletes to compete and be successful in the classroom, ultimately fostering an environment conducive to graduating. They are customer-service oriented when engaging with prospective student-athletes and their families. We will be leaders in our conference and provide professional development opportunities to our staff so they can effectively master their craft of service to student-athletes.

HORNET ACADEMIC HONORSDuring the 2011-12 academic school year, Delaware State produced 121 MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic members (more than any other conference school). Other academic honors for the year are as follows: | Jazmyne Hefflefinger (bowling) graduated with a 4.00 GPA and was class valedictorian in addition to being named MEAC Woman of the Year | Brittni Collins-Rideout, Caroline Foltz and McKenzie Trueba (equestrian) the first three Hornets to be named NCEA Academic All-Americans in school history | 14 of 15 teams reported NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores above 900; four teams scored perfect 1000s | Led MEAC for second consecutive season with 121 Commissioner All-Academic honorees | 54 percent of student-athlete population named to the Hornet Academic Honor Roll which honors those earning a 3.00 GPA | 73 Hornets were named to the Dean’s List (22 more than 2010-11) | 25 Hornets were named to the President’s List | 67 Hornets graduated Spring 2012 | DSU softball ranked 37th overall (out of over 130 teams and first out of HBCU schools) while placing nine on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar Athlete list.

Delaware State University, by virtue of its membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), is responsible for ensuring complete compliance of all constituencies (i.e. university staff, student-athletes, alumni, fans, boosters and friends) with all NCAA and MEAC rules and regulations. Under NCAA rules, parents, alumni, fans and friends may be categorized as “representatives of athletics interests.”

Delaware State University strives for academic and athletic excellence. Pursuant to that goal is an on-going commit-ment to ethical conduct by all members of its staff and supporters. Even the simplest, inadvertent actions on the part of a booster or supporter may jeopardize the eligibility of student-athletes and/or prospects and the compliance of the university with NCAA or MEAC regulations.

The NCAA broadly defines a “booster” as an individual, agency, entity or organization who is known by an institution to: | Have participated in or been a member of an agency that promotes the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program | Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or a booster organization for the department | Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program | Have been a season ticket holder | Have provided benefits to student-athletes or their relatives or friends

I’m an Alumnus, am I a Booster? Not necessarily. Not all Delaware state alumni are considered boosters. Likewise, a booster does not have to be a graduate of Delaware State. Boosters meet at least one of the criteria listed above. Thus, an individual who has ever made a financial contribution to the Athletics Department is a booster. In a general sense, a season ticket holder in any sport at any time is a booster. Members and financial supporters of any Delaware State athletic organization are boosters. These are only a hand-ful of examples of typical “boosters” who may be affiliated with an athletic program. Many additional scenarios exist, but, regardless of a booster affiliation with the university, it is important that all supporters follow NCAA rules as they interact with prospects, current student-athletes, their families and friends.

What you cannot do | A booster is prohibited from making in-person, on-or off-campus recruiting contacts, or written or telephone com-munication with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians. | A booster is prohibited from contacting any enrolled student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of encouraging transfer to Delaware State University and participation in its athletics program. If a prospect approaches a DSU booster regarding the athletics program, please explain that NCAA rules prohibit such a discussion and suggest to the prospect that he/she contact the head coach of the sport for more information. | A booster is prohibited from contacting the prospect’s coach, principal or counselor for the purpose of obtaining information about the prospect. | A booster is prohibited from picking up film or transcripts from the prospect’s educational institution. | A booster is prohibited from entertaining a prospect and/or relatives and friends of a prospect at any site, either on-or off-campus. | In addition, a booster is prohibited from providing tickets at no or reduced cost to any Delaware State home or away athletic or non-athletic event for prospects, their relatives or friends. Only the DSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics can provide complimentary admissions to prospects and only for HOME events. | A booster is prohibited from paying or arranging for transportation for a prospect and/or relatives and friends of a prospect to visit campus. While it is permissible for a friend or neighbor to transport a high school or community college student who is NOT an athlete to the campus, NCAA regulations prohibit the activity for a prospect.

What you can do | A booster is permitted to send newspaper clippings or any other information regarding a prospect to the respective Delaware State coaching staff. | A booster is permitted to attend high school or community college athletic(s) events. You simply cannot have any contact with prospects or relatives and/or friends. | A booster is permitted to continue established family relationships with friends and neighbors. Contact with sons and daughters of these families is permitted as long as they are not made for recruiting purposes. | A booster is permitted to have a telephone conversation with a prospect ONLY if the prospect initiates the call. However, the booster is not permitted to have a recruiting conversation with the prospect and an institutional staff member cannot prearrange the call.

Extra benefits (as defined by the NCAA) – “any special ar-rangement by an institutional employee or representative of athletics interest to provide a student-athlete a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of such a benefit is not considered an NCAA violation if that same benefit is generally available to the institution’s students or their relatives and/or friends or to a particular segment of the student body determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.”

The DSU Sports Medicine Department is committed to providing comprehensive, high quality medical services for its student-athletes.

Our goal is to provide for the total health care needs of the student-athlete. On-site medical services include preven-tion, recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries and illnesses, rehabilitation services, pre-participation exams, psychological counseling, nutritional counseling and drug education and counseling.

The sports medicine team is made up of a team physician, a team orthopedic physician, a team dentist, certified

athletic trainers, certified physical therapists, and certified strength and conditioning specialists. We also have rela-tionships with the other members of the surrounding DSU community, which includes counseling and psychiatric services, and access to other health care professionals.

MISSION STATEMENTOur program is designed to teach all our athletes to become a physically and mentally stronger individual by implementing a program that stresses goal setting, dedica-tion and perseverance.

PHILOSOPHYThe young men and women that we work with in our pro-gram are athletes first. All of the activities that we perform with them will be to enhance their natural athletic ability. We will use training concepts and principles from different disciplines to help our athletes reach their goals on and off their respective playing field.

FACILITIESDelaware State University student-athletes benefit from a first-rate strength and conditioning facility. The first phase of the DSU’s $50 million Strength and Conditioning/Wellness Center/Student Union opened during the fall of 2008. A dedication ceremony for the facility was attended by local and state elected officials and many former DSU

student-athletes, including NFL standouts, Jamal Jackson and Darnerien McCants.

The strength and conditioning center is a 17,000 feet, state-of-the-art complex with all the amenities of a major college facility. The center is connected to the north end of the Memorial Hall main gymnasium and is solely for the use of Hornet student-athletes. The facility includes a weight room, laundry room, offices for conditioning coaches and locker rooms for men’s and women’s basket-ball. The addition also includes a two-story entrance and lobby with ticketing area.

Phase II of the project involved the construction of a Wellness Center specifically for the general student population and the general public. This section is located on the southeast end of Memorial Hall and includes the renovation of an existing auxiliary basketball court and construction of a new basketball court as well as new offices, concession space, men’s and women’s locker rooms and a swimming pool.

Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Center features an 18-stall barn and a 10-stall barn, with three tack stalls and a wash stall with hot water, on-site laundry room, heated lounge and bath-room. All stalls include sliding doors and have rubber mats. Both indoor and outdoor arenas feature elevated judges’ stands, along with a PA system for events. Gambler’s Choice has a 100’x200’ clear span indoor arena that allows for all-weather riding and a 150’x300’ outdoor sand area. As the home of the DSU Hornets Equestrian team, the facility is equipped for Western and English riding.

The Hornets’ Nest has been the home field of the Delaware State University softball team since 1992. The dimensions for the field are 220’ down the lines and 225’ in centerfield. The infield consists of Diamond-Tex with pro conditioner. In fall 2011, the team installed new sport rye mix grass in the outfield. The Hornets’ Nest includes a press box with Wi-Fi and fiber optics streaming capabilities, home/visi-tor bull pens, three batting cages, infield/outfield irrigation, seating capacity of 300 and lights.

Alumni Stadium was constructed in 1980 and serves as home for the DSU football, women’s lacrosse and both men’s and women’s track and field teams. Addition-ally, the facility is the site of the annual Delaware I & II High School Championship football games.

Home to the DSU baseball team, Soldier Field has hosted games since 1958. The dimensions are 320’ down the lines, 365’ in the leftfield gap, 355’ in the rightfield gap and 380’ in centerfield. Prior to the start of the 2009 season, the leftfield fence was extended to a height of 20’.

The women’s golf team calls Dover’s Maple Dale Country Club home beginning in 2012. Maple Dale was established in 1925 as a three-hole course and expanded to nine holes in the mid-30’s. After relocating in 1969, it was enlarged to a full 18 holes and now offers a mature course set amidst a wooded terrain, dotted with various ponds. This USGA championship rated 18–hole course is as challenging and fun, as it is beautiful, having only one recorded score below par in a 36 hole tournament.

The Brunswick Doverama is home to the bowling team, where they practice daily and host an average of two events each season. The Doverama is located at 1600 S. Governors Ave. (at DuPont Hwy.). For more information, please contact the bowling center at 302-734-7501.

The Athletics Facilities and Event Operations depart-ment is responsible for scheduling, records, bud-get, personnel and facilities development. They are also responsible for all grounds including outdoor playing surfaces, all surrounding grounds and field preparation for events. Other responsibilities include maintenance of facility equipment, coordinating lo-gistics and operations to conduct all athletic events including meetings, workouts, practices, competi-tions, championships and camps. All work orders for Telecom, Computer Services, Data Network Services, Physical Plant, Building Services and Alterations and Improvements must be submitted by the Coordina-tor of Athletic Facilities & Events.

Constructed in 1982, Memorial Hall Gymna-sium has been home to the DSU men’s and women’s basketball programs as well as the volleyball team for over three decades. The facility was christened by the men’s basket-ball team on December 7, 1982 with a 96-92 double-overtime victory over U.S. Inter-national. Since then, the facility has been a part of many exciting contests.



DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY

Dr. Harry L. Williams became the 10th President in the 120-year history of Delaware State University on January 10, 2010, after serving as the institution’s provost and vice president for aca-demic affairs. Shortly after beginning his tenure as president, Dr. Williams convened a Blue Ribbon Commission that crafted a new vision statement and a set of core values to establish DSU as one of America’s most highly respected Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). During the first eight months of his tenure, Dr. Williams held more than 200 meetings with constituencies, including White House officials, Governor Jack Markell, the Delaware Congres-sional delegation, state legislators, alumni groups, community organizations and others. Dr. Williams also took two trips abroad to sign new collaborative agreements with institutions of higher education in China and South Africa. Under Dr. Williams’ leadership as provost, the University estab-lished a new general education program, a distance education strategic plan and a Middle States Monitoring Report plan and successfully completed searches that led to the hiring of a new dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, a director of distance learning, a director of the honors program and an associate vice president for sponsored programs. Prior to his arrival at DSU, Dr. Williams served the University of

North Carolina General Administration as interim associate vice president for academic affairs beginning in September 2007. He was elevated in March 2008 to interim senior associate vice president for academic and student affairs in which he focused on access and outreach for the 17 campuses of the UNC system. Dr. Williams also progressed from an associate director to associ-ate vice chancellor posts in the areas of academic affairs, enroll-ment and diversity at Appalachian State University from 1988 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2007. He served as interim director of admissions for North Carolina A&T University from 2000 to 2004. In addition to his experience within institutions of higher edu-cation, from 2002 to 2008 Dr. Williams was a national market-ing and recruitment associate consultant with Noel-Levitz, the top national consultation firm for enrollment and management solutions in the country. In that capacity, Dr. Williams provided consultation expertise to 14 different institutions of higher edu-cation, including Delaware State University. Dr. Williams earned a Bachelor of Science in communication broadcasting and a Master of Arts in educational media, both from Appalachian State University. He earned an Ed.D. in educa-tional leadership and policy analysis from East Tennessee State University. He is married to Dr. Robin S. Williams, and they have two chil-dren: Austin, 16, and Gavin, 12.

Now in its 121st year, Delaware State Uni-versity has eagerly moved into the new millennium by embracing today’s new technology, assuming its role as an insti-tution of research and preparing its stu-dents for the global market.

Delaware State University’s beginnings date back to 1891, when through enacted the federal Morrill Act of 1890 and state legislation, the State College for Colored Students was established. The first classes were held in February 1892.

The institution has since developed into a 400-acre complex and has undergone two name changes since its inception. The name was changed to Delaware State College in 1947 and Delaware State Uni-versity in 1993. In addition to its main campus in the state capital of Dover, DSU has satellite campuses in Wilmington and Georgetown.

In the institution’s history, the institution has had 10 presidents – Wesley P. Webb (1891-1895), William C. Jason (1895-1923), Dr. William S. Grossley, (1923-1942), Dr. Howard Gregg (1942-1949), Dr. Oscar Chapman (1950-1951), Dr. Je-rome H. Holland (1953-1960), Dr. Luna I. Mishoe (1960-1987), Dr. William B. De-Lauder (1987-2003), Dr. Allen L. Sessoms (2003-2008) and Dr. Harry Lee Williams (2010-present).

During DSU’s history, there have also been two acting presidents. Dr. Maurice E. Thomasson served as acting president twice (1949-1950 and 1951-1953). Dr. Claibourne D. Smith was acting president from 2008-2010.

DSU is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, with its most recent reaffirma-tion of accreditation taking place in 2012. In addition, the University’s education, social work, dietetics, nursing, hospitality and tourism programs all have national accreditations. The College of Business is internationally accredited.

Students at DSU have a choice of 52 un-dergraduate majors and 25 graduate degrees. Since 2004, DSU has also estab-lished five doctoral programs – in Ap-plied Chemistry, Education Leadership, Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, Neuroscience and Optics. Of the 190 faculty members that are spread among 20 academic de-partments, more than 91% of the faculty holds doctoral degrees while 45 have reached the rank of full professor. The stu-dent/professor ratio is a low 14:1.

Over the last decade, research has be-come a high priority at DSU. Over that time the institution has parlayed suc-cessful grant writing efforts into the sig-

nificant improvements in its research infrastructure and project opportunities. The University currently has research projects in the disciplines of biotechnology, chemistry, law enforcement, mathematics, natural resources, social work, applied optics, computer sciences and other areas.

In 2009, the University received a $5 million NASA grant to es-tablish a Center for Applied Optics for Space Science on the DSU campus. In 2011, the state of Delaware set aside $10 million to go toward the construction of a new Optics Research Facility.

In addition to its traditional majors, DSU offers unique under-graduate programs in aviation, forensic biology, environmental science, hospitality and tourism management, health promo-tion and movement sciences. The most popular undergraduate majors are mass communications, criminal justice, sport science, management, psychology, accounting and biology.

Over the last three years, the University has also significantly in-creased its reach around the world through a number of interna-tional agreements abroad. In 2011 the University finalized new agreements with several Chinese institutions of higher educa-tion. A group of DSU students traveled to China for a one-month learning experience in the spring 2012, and during the current fall semester 2011 more than 100 Chinese exchanges students

are enrolled at DSU. In addition, DSU’s Master of Business Educa-tion Program in Vietnam National University graduated its first class in mid-September 2011.

DSU offers 18 intercollegiate athletics programs at the NCAA Di-vision I level. Its football, men’s and women’s basketball, softball teams and women’s equestrian have all achieved post-season national tournament bids over the last eight years, mostly the result of winning their conference tournament championship and regular season titles. Most recently, the University has add-ed women’s golf and women’s lacrosse to the University’s inter-collegiate sports programs.

Over the last five years, the University made significant en-hancement to campus life with the completion of a $51.5 mil-lion student complex that includes a Strength and Conditioning Facility, a Wellness & Recreation Center, a Swimming Pool and a three-story Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center.

During the fall semester 2011, DSU had a school record-enroll-ment of 4,178 students.

You can step back in time, literally, by standing on the very corner where in 1787, del-egates to Delaware’s Constitutional Convention ratified the U.S. Constitution – thus giving Delaware its “First State” moniker. The area’s collection of small towns as well as the natural beauty of places such as Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, provide

hours of fun and adventure for visitors of all ages.

Dover’s central location in Delaware makes Kent County the per-fect place for regional meetings and conventions, and a great overnight destination for tours of the state. Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley attractions are only one hour’s drive to the north. Delaware’s beach resorts, including Lewes, Bethany, and Rehoboth, are only one hour’s drive to the south. Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. are all within a two-hour drive.

ATTRACTIONSBombay Hook Nation-al Wildlife Refuge is a 16,000-acre haven along the Delaware Bay coast east of Smyrna, with salt marshes, ponds, fields, and forests. Visitors come from all over the world to see the variety of migratory shorebirds and waterfowl that stop to feed at the refuge, an

important feeding stop on the Atlantic Flyway.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITESThe Delaware Bay, just East of Dover, offers some of the best fish-ing and crabbing in the region. The bay serves as a breeding

DOVER AIR FORCE BASEDover Air Force Base is important to the country’s de-fense, as it represents one-fourth of the nation’s stra-tegic airlift capacity. Approximately 7,000 people are stationed at the DAFB. Dover is home to 36 giant C-5 Galaxy cargo planes, which are used to transport troops and equipment wherever they are needed around the world. The C-5 is the largest airplane in the U.S. military. Each plane is nearly as long as a football field, and could carry six motor coaches in its hold. The base cargo ter-minal known as the “Superport” is the largest anywhere in the US military, processing more tons of cargo than Kennedy airport in NY. The Air Mobility Command (AMC) Museum on the DAFB has over 24 aircraft on display, and features more multi-engine aircraft than the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC. Veteran aircraft on display include a C-47 “Gooney Bird” that dropped paratroopers over Normandy on D-Day.

DOVER INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAYDover Downs International Speedway hosts two NAS-CAR Sprint Cup/Nationwide Series race weekends each year. Dover has the largest seating capacity (140,000 seats) of any sports facility between New York and the Carolinas. The “Monster Mile” has challenged many professional drivers as they compete for the checkered flag. The concrete track with 24 degree banking is the first and only concrete superspeedway in NASCAR his-tory, providing awesome racing action. NASCAR week-ends at Dover are typically scheduled for the second weekend in May and the fourth weekend in Septem-ber. Qualifying takes place on Friday, Nationwide Se-ries drivers race on Saturday, and the Sprint Cup stars race on Sunday. Dover Downs, along with nearby Har-rington Raceway, also features top flight harness rac-ing.

EVENTSThe Old Dover Days Festival has existed in one form or another in the capital city since 1933. It is held on The Green and Legislative Mall, two beautiful outdoor parks in the historic downtown dis-trict. Traditional elements and new components bring in thou-sands of visitors each year with attendance reaching 15,000. Old Dover Days is a celebration of the First State’s Capital City and features a parade, maypole dancing, food court, re-enactors, walking tours, free entertainment and much more.

The Amish Bike Tour, African-American Festival, Delmarva Folk Festival, Jazz & Blues Festival, Diamond State BBQ Champion-ship and Wyoming Peach Festival are other events that bring thousands to Central Delaware each year.

ARTS & CULTUREThe Greater Dover is rich in arts and cultural activities. The Schwartz Center for the Arts, of which DSU is a partner, is one of the premier performing arts venues in the state. From live per-formances, films and special events, to meetings and receptions, the Schwartz Center offers something for all tastes.

The Dover Symphony Orchestra is a regional organization founded in 1967 and comprised of professional and amateur musicians of all ages.

The Johnson Victrola museum is a tribute to Delaware’s native son, Eldridge Reeves Johnson, who founded the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1901. Exhibits include phonographs, re-cordings, memorabilia, trademarks, objects, and paintings that highlight Mr. Johnson’s successful business enterprises and chronicle the development of the sound-recording industry.

In 2004, under the leadership of Board Chair Dr. Scott D. Miller (President of Wesley College), a strategic alliance was formed to partner the resources of Wesley College, Delaware State Univer-sity, and The Friends of the Capital Theater, to maximize usage and position the historic treasure as the premiere performing arts center south of Wilmington. In January 2007, the relation-ship was formalized with the three becoming equal partners in the operation, management and programming of the Center.
