Arts Umbrella

At Arts Umbrella, children and youth learn to reflect on their world and themselves, to venture into self-inquiry, and to use their own voice to describe, articulate and develop ideas. Since 1979, Arts Umbrella has been fulfilling its mission to inspire kids for life through the arts. In the past year alone, inspirational learning opportunities in visual, media and performing arts were delivered to 24,000 children and youth through tuition-based programs and free-of-charge Outreach programs.

Arts Umbrella is founded on the idea that arts education plays a critical role in healthy childhood development, and that all children should be granted the same opportunity for growth. With more and more Arts Umbrella programs happening throughout Metro Vancouver, more children are benefitting from access to high quality arts education. A not-for-profit organization, Arts Umbrella relies on the generosity of the community to deliver inspiring arts programs year after year, to as many children as possible.

message from CEO & board chairINSPIRATION IS AT THE CORE OF OUR BUSINESS

Arts Umbrella has come a long way in its 33 years of operation. From a small start with 45 students in 1979 to the bustling collection of programs that happen on Granville Island, in Surrey, and at community locations around Metro Vancouver, Arts Umbrella continues to grow. The organization’s mission has remained strong over the course of time, and we continue to seek inspirational ways to positively impact young people through arts education.

Accessibility is a key component of what we do. We believe that all children deserve the chance to experience the benefits arts education can have on their lives. We measure our success by the positive impact we have on the community. Children can experience all kinds of barriers in their lives: it is our mission to help them overcome challenges, and be inspired by arts learning. This past year, we reached more than 24,000 students; more than 12,000 of these children and youth participated free-of-charge or at a reduced rate.

It takes a monumental effort to ensure that programs such as ours remain accessible every year, now and into the future. Thank you to all our supporters for their gener-ous and ongoing support with funds, time, and expertise. It is gratifying to know that so many others believe – as we do – that arts education is not a ‘nice-to-have’ component of a child’s successful development, but a ‘need-to-have’. Thank you to our students, parents, volunteers, sponsors and donors for furthering our mission to inspire kids for life through the arts!

Self-confidence, independence, team-work, patience, and giving and receiving feedback are all part of what is learned in an Arts Umbrella class.

The classes inspire students to explore and appreciate the arts not only as creators and performers but also as members of an audience.

Most importantly, Arts Umbrella is about creating a difference: the type of differ-ence that can result when encourage-ment, support, creativity and fun come together to change a child’s life.

how arts umbrella worksABOUT ARTS UMBRELLA

All Arts Umbrella studios are places of magic, inspiration and learning. With classes available for young artists of all skill levels, children and youth can develop new skills and hone interests while discovering more about the power

of the imagination and their unique view of the world.

Students are taught that art making is a process, one that can be undertaken at any point in their lives, and that skills can

constantly be improved. At Arts Umbrella students are asked to push boundaries in their thinking, to be creative, critical thinkers, and become an active member in the communities they live in.

INSIDE ARTS UMBRELLA STUDIOS

Inspirational instructional staff is the cor-nerstone of the Arts Umbrella experience. Caring, artistic individuals provide the technique and inspiration to empower students to be artists, make their own decisions, and develop their own vision.

All Arts Umbrella classes are led by prac-ticing artists who are invested in teach-ing young minds and creating a vibrant community. By relating the student’s work to their own personal investigation of the artistic process, instructors in all disciplines bring a richness and depth to the studio experience.

This type of guided inquiry and learning creates an environment of positive inter-action and development for all students, regardless of skill level. There is a magic that happens when young learners can see that their instructors care deeply not only about the subject that is being taught, but also about the learning pro-cess of each student.

MAKE A GIFT OF SECURITIES A gift of publicly traded securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds) is a wonderful way to support Arts Umbrella and receive a significant tax benefit. Canadians who donate publicly traded securities to registered charities are not required to pay capital gains tax on the appreciated portion of the shares’ value. See your financial advisor for further details.

To learn more about how you can support Arts Umbrella, please call 604.681.5268 x271 or email [email protected].

donate to make a difference todayYour support is crucial to making a difference in the lives of thousands of children and youth every year. Please consider making a personal gift and encouraging your company to help inspire kids for life through the arts!

PLEASE DONATE

Of the more than 24,000 children who access Arts Umbrella programs annu-ally, more than 12,000 kids who may face geographical, cultural or financial barriers, participate free-of-charge or at a reduced rate through bursaries, scholar-ships and Outreach programs.

Arts Umbrella is able to provide accessible programs because of highly committed and supportive donors and supporters. Tuition fees cover only 45% of the annual operating budget, with 4% coming from government. The remaining 51% comes from individual, corporate, and foundation donations and fundraising events.

Ensuring programs are sustainable is a key organizational mandate. Only those pro-grams with adequate funding are sched-uled, to avoid the cancellation of programs during the year. The negative impact the loss of a program can have on a child is huge, especially when their life may already be filled with uncertainties and instability.

outreach models • ENGAGED

Concentrated delivery of a particular artistic discipline over a prolonged period of time. This allows greater engagement between instructors and students, building rapport, skills and confidence.

• WORKSHOP Workshops provided directly to stu-dents in highly vulnerable schools. By going to the school, students can access programs without the need for transportation.

• LIVE PERFORMANCE Students in pre-professional per-formance programs bring familiar and curriculum-relevant stories and themes to life for Metro Vancouver students. Dance and Theatre students tour in the Fall, Winter and Spring to bring the joy of perfor-mance to a new audience.

Arts Umbrella’s Outreach programs harness the magic, experience and expertise of Arts Umbrella programs and bring free-of-charge, high quality arts education directly to schools and community and neighbourhood centres.

Accessibility is one of Arts Umbrella’s key mandates; overcoming barriers to participation and addressing vulnerability factors means more children can access the life-long benefits of arts education. Through Outreach programs, children and youth who may not have had access have the opportunity to explore the arts as creators, audiences and performers.

By working directly with schools and community service providers, Arts Umbrella ensures programs meet the needs of the children in each specific community, from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood.

Did you know Arts Umbrella tuition fees cover only 45% of the organiza-tion’s annual operating budget? Just 4% comes from government sources, while the remaining 51% comes from individual, corporate, and foundation donations and fundraising events.

Of the more than 24,000 children who access Arts Umbrella programs annu-ally, more than 12,000 kids who face geographical, cultural or financial bar-riers, participate in our programs free-

of-charge or at a reduced rate through bursaries, scholarships and Outreach programs.

In order to reach as many children as possible with the benefits of arts education, Arts Umbrella needs to raise more than $1,200,000 from individuals, corporations and foundations through the Annual Campaign.

We invite you to contribute any amount to support an Arts Umbrella program or

discipline of your choice. Your donation of $1,000 or more will be recognized in print and your donation of $5,000 or more will be recognized with logo placement in the 2013/14 Program Guide.
