On the heels of its most successful season in recent memory, the Seton Hall tennis program is set to begin the fall portion of their 2012-13 schedule as they travel to the Quinni-piac Invitational this weekend.

Last year, SHU ended a five-year postseason drought by earning a bid to the BIG EAST Tournament while Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) became the first Pirate to earn All-BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Team honors. Entering his sixth season, head coach Greg Wyzykowski believes this year’s squad is more than capable of continuing to elevate the program towards becom-ing a consistent power within the conference and region.

“This could be the deepest lineup we have had since I have been here,” said Wyzykowski. “What that does is, not only can we field a stronger lineup in tournaments and matches, but it keeps some pressure on the girls in practice as well. They push each other and it forces everyone to raise their games because they know that no one’s spot is safe from match to match.”

Two new additions that have added depth to the squad are freshmen Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) and Alex Landert (Naples, Fla.), both of whom have come to South Orange fol-lowing distinguished high school careers.

Keenan joins the Pirates after an unprecedented run of suc-cess at St. Thomas Aquinas, finishing a four-year varsity career without a single blemish on her singles or doubles record. Last spring, she became New Hampshire’s first four-time singles champion, adding that distinction to a ledger that already included two doubles and two team state crowns. At the cul-mination of an immaculate run, Keenan was named 2012 New Hampshire Player of the Year and graduated as the #1 ranked player in the state.

A five-star recruit that was rated as high as 66th nationally and 10th in a talent-rich player pool in the state of Florida; Landert has also displayed the ability that could enable her to be an instant contributor in her debut season. A native of Zurich, Switzerland, she put together an impressive junior resume, winning four national tournaments before moving to the United States and spending her senior year at Naples High School.

“Julia and Alex can definitely step in and play a large role for us from the start,” Wyzykowski said. “They are both talented players whose most immediate impact will probably be on the doubles court. Both girls have a skill set that suits doubles ten-nis well and that should translate into improved results for us. I am excited about the prospect of being able to feature three really quality pairs this year and they are a big part of that.”

Keenan and Landert will look to follow in the footsteps of sophomores Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia), Maria Rodri-guez (Bogota, Colombia) and Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) who all played prominent roles for the Pirates last season during their freshmen campaigns.

Guryanova came out on top nearly 65 percent of her singles appearances last season. She also teamed with Rodriguez to post a winning doubles record as part of a pair that recorded the second most doubles wins for SHU in 2011-12. Rodriguez also had her own measure of singles success, defeating Gury-anova to win the D flight title at the Quinnipiac Invitational and finishing the year with more wins than any Pirate not named Chloe Sher.

Shoemaker also contributed to the team’s ascent, ranking third on the team with eight wins during the spring season. She also frequently teamed with graduated senior Elizabeth Verow to form the squad’s #2 doubles tandem. Together, Shoemaker and Verow qualified for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament in the fall and secured several key dual match victories, helping the Pirates secure an elusive berth in the conference tournament.

“Nothing our sophomores go up against this year is going to surprise them,” Wyzykowski stated. “I think with a year of experience under their belts, they know what is expected of them and are all ready to take the next step for us. Right now, I see Maddy teaming with Julia to form one of our better doubles duos. Anna and Maria have proven that they can be contributors and having them available is going to make us a difficult team to contend with.”

While the team will enjoy the benefits associated with added depth, Sher and classmate Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) will once again play the protagonists for the Pirates. Entering their third season in blue and white, Portela

and Sher have already established themselves as the most pro-lific doubles pair in Seton Hall history. Following an unparal-leled run of 13-straight wins to start the season, only a stum-ble in the team’s final match against Syracuse kept Portela and Sher from posting a perfect spring record. Along the way, the dynamic tandem set a new school record for doubles wins in a single season and surpassed the previous all-time mark for most wins by a Seton Hall doubles team.

A trip to the singles court did little to suppress Sher’s domi-nance in 2011-12. The Hong Kong native completed the year with an 8-1 record against BIG EAST opponents on her way to a second consecutive 20-win season from the #1 singles position. The junior also asserted herself as a regional power by compil-ing a 4-1 record against opponents ranked either regionally or nationally. At the end of the season, Sher climbed to the #16 spot in the final ITA Northeast region poll of the year.

“When it comes to Chloe, I think she might have a little bit of a target on her back this year because she’s definitely not a secret anymore,” Wyzykowski said. “The key for her is going to be performing her best every time out. She is a great athlete who has really been adding to her game since last year, so I believe she will be up for the mental and physical challenges ahead of her.”

An unquestioned talent, injuries have slowed Portela some-what throughout her first two years. Along with teaming with Sher to establish a level of doubles prowess unmatched in program history, the Puerto Rico native has consistently been penciled in as the team’s #2 singles player. Portela battled her way to several victories over her freshman and sophomore campaigns, but Seton Hall’s head man believes she is poised to take a giant leap forward as a junior this year.

“Rocio has worked incredibly hard over the summer,” Wyzy-kowski revealed. “She has dealt with some injury issues and I think that sparked a recommitment to strength and condition-ing that should pay off in a big way for her and subsequently our team. I truly believe that this will be the year we see Rocio’s ability start to translate into the type of results I know she is capable of.”

Senior Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) rounds out the 2012-13 squad. An extremely experienced player who has been a consistent force in the Pirates’ lineup throughout her career, Cordero will be assuming a new role as team captain. As a junior, she posted a perfect singles record in the fall and took home the C flight singles title from the Quinnipiac Invitational. At the same tournament, she teamed with her former partner Courtney Kilarski to capture the B flight doubles hardware.

As the lone senior in this year’s lineup Coach Wyzykowski believes Cordero’s leadership will be a vital component of the Pirates’ success this season.

“Karina has already shown she has what it takes to be an ef-fective leader for us,” said Wyzykowski. “She has displayed a willingness to do whatever the team needs and has transi-tioned nicely into her new role. In terms of her game, I have also seen marked improvement there as well. She has an energy that has been infectious and I believe she will have her best year this season and continue to push the team as we progress through our schedule.”

The 2012 fall schedule features four tournament dates as well as a home dual match against Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday, October 16. The Pirates will make trips to Quinnipiac and Navy for the second consecutive year before participating in the USTA Collegiate Invitational at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y. Following the head-to-head matchup with FDU, Seton Hall will close the fall at the ITA Regional Tournament.

“The fall season is important for us because it gives the girls a chance to go out there and compete against someone else,” said Wyzykowski. “Our team understands the importance of these tournaments because their performance carries heavy implications in terms of seeding in future tournaments, rank-ings and who gets an invitation to the ITAs. I’m looking for us to go out there, compete well and continue to produce strong results. How we play in the fall will also help shape our lineup for the spring.”

“I’m glad that I was able to schedule a dual match again this fall as well,” Wyzykowski continued. “The thought process there is two-fold. It is an opportunity to test our lineup while giving the team a chance to experience the head-to-head format prior to the spring season. It also helps us avoid a long layoff and keeps the team sharp as we gear up for the ITA Re-gionals. All in all, I’m excited and I think the team is too. The team is dedicated, having fun, and we are all looking forward to another good year.”

Greg WYZYKOWSKIHead CoachSixth SeasonAlma Mater: NJIT

Greg Wyzykowski returns for his sixth season as head coach of the Seton Hall women’s tennis program. Wyzykowski joined the Pirates after spending the 2006-07 season as an assistant coach with the Fairleigh Dickinson men’s and women’s tennis teams.

In his five years with the Pirates, 70 per-cent of players have improved their results from their freshman season to their senior years.

In 2011-12, Wyzykowski led SHU to a BIG EAST Tournament berth and Chloe Sher, then just a sophomore, became the first Seton Hall player to be named to the All-BIG EAST Women’s Tennis team. Sher, who put together a 4-1 record during against opponents who were ranked either regionally or nationally during the season, finished the year rated as the #17 player in the Northeast region by the ITA.

Also under Wyzykowski’s guidance, Sher teamed with Rocio Portela to become the winningest doubles duo in school history in just their second year of competition.

The Pirates also enjoyed a previously unmatched level of success in fall tourna-ments in 2011 and 2012. Over the past two years, Seton Hall players have captured a total of 10 titles during the autumn. Seton Hall has also had half the squad selected to participate in the ITA Regional Tournament on both occassions over that span.

Wyzykowski’s teams have also excelled in the classroom. Collectively, the team has qualified for the ITA Academic Award each season. Several players have also received academic recognition from the BIG EAST. Most recently, all eight members of the 2011-12 squad received BIG EAST Academic All-Star distinction.

In Fall 2012, the women’s tennis team boasted the highest collective GPA among

Seton Hall’s 14 varsity athletic programs and boasted the highest cumulative GPA for active roster members as well.

In his year with the Knights, Wyzykowski helped lead FDU to a NEC Championship along with an NCAA Tournament appear-ance.

In July of 2008, Wyzykowski was a coach for Under-14 boys and girls at the USTA Eastern Zonal Competition. His boys squad took the gold medal at the event.

His previous collegiate experience includes launching a women’s tennis program at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J., where he spent seven seasons. In 2005-06, he earned him CACC Coach of the Year honors and was conference’s women’s tennis chairperson during its inaugural season.

Wyzykowski resurrected the women’s tennis program at Brookdale Community College where he was head coach for three years. He also coached in the high school ranks at South River for 11 years, where he was selected Coach of the Year twice, and Shore Regional for an additional six seasons. Wyzykowski has also served on the ITA/NCAA Division II women’s ranking com-mittee in 2005-06, and a former head pro at Rumson Country Club.

Wyzykowski is a United States Professional Tennis Association certified instructor and is a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. He also served on the United States Tennis Association middle states collegiate committee. In 2011, Wyzykowski served as part of the BIG EAST Champion-ship tennis committee.

Wyzykowski is a graduate of the New Jer-sey Institute of Technology and currently resides in Howell, N.J.

Combine a student-discounted New Jersey transit ticket, with 30 minutes train-time, and you’re at Penn Statiion in Midtown Manhattan. From there, train, bus or walk to the neighborhood of your choice. Time Square’s Theater District: plays and musicals. Upper Fifth Avenue, dubbed Museum Mile; venerable institutions like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. Head Downtown and check out the financial district including the New York Stock Exchange. Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New York’s burrough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofit and government agencies, law and accounting firms, television and print media - the list goes on and on.

The Hall’s campus expands dramatically when you include the surrounding areas. DR. A. GABRIELESTEBANUNIVERSITY PRESIDENT, SETON HALL UNIVERSITY

A. Gabriel Esteban was appointed 20th president of Seton Hall University in January 2011, after serving as interim president for six months. He has charged the University¹s more than 900 faculty and 1,800 employees and nearly 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students to aspire to excellence in scholarship and service and is committed to the institution’s 155-year Catholic mission.

Starting in 2007, Esteban was provost and chief academic officer of Seton Hall. In that office, he oversaw eight colleges and schools, University libraries and enrollment services.

He has spearheaded the University’s strategic planning and campus master plan initiatives, collaborated with faculty and academic leaders on enhancing and adding undergraduate and graduate programs, establishing academic priorities and strengthening the centrality of academics at Seton Hall. He has also led the strategic changes in the enrollment management and financial aid strategies that will position the University through the current economic environment.

When he was chief academic officer, Seton Hall won more international faculty fellowships and student scholarships (including the first-ever Rhodes Scholarship, as well as numerous Fulbrights) than ever before.

Prior to his leadership positions at Seton Hall, Esteban was provost and dean of faculty at The University of Central Arkansas. Dr. Esteban also served as dean of the College of Business and tenured professor of marketing at the University of Central Arkansas. During that time he served as chairman of the Conway (Arkansas) Area Chamber of Commerce and of the Women’s Shelter for Central Arkansas. He was associate vice president of academic affairs at Arkansas Tech University and an assistant professor at the University of Houston-Victoria. Esteban was also a fulltime instructor at the College of Business Administration of the University of the Philippines.

He received a doctorate in administration from the Graduate School of Management of the University of California at Irvine and a master of science in Japanese business studies from Chaminade University in Honolulu. Esteban earned a master of business administration and a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of the Philippines, Dillman, Quezon City. He also received specialized training in leading transformation and change at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education in addition to private sector work experience in the Philippines and Japan.

Esteban has served American higher education in a number of national roles, including membership on the Accreditation Review Council of the Higher Learning Commission and work as team chair and consultant-evaluator. He serves as a board member of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education (CARE) Commission and the Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE), and has been selected to serve on the national task force for Voluntary System for Accountability (VSA) sponsored by American Association of State Colleges and Universities. For the past seven years, he has been an invited speaker and faculty member of the Leadership Development Program for Higher Education offered by Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics held at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California.

He is the first lay president of Seton Hall in a generation and a devoted fan of Pirate athletic programs. He and his wife, Josephine, have a daughter, Ysabella, who is an undergraduate student at the University.


PATRICK

LYONSDirector of Athletics and Recreational Services

Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011.

Since his arrival, Lyons has been dedicated in his efforts to implement his vision for Seton Hall’s athletics and recreation department by introducing a number of initiatives designed to enhance the college experience for Seton Hall’s 14 NCAA Division I athletics programs and the student body as a whole.

In Lyons’ first full year as Director of Athletics, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund, Seton Hall’s athletic fundraising vehicle, experienced the most successful year of its history, receiving record contributions to fund critical initiatives to help make the Pirates competitive in the BIG EAST conference and at a national level.

When Lyons arrived at Seton Hall, he established improvements and upgrades to the Pirates’ athletic and recreation facilities as a primary goal. Thanks in large part to contributions to Pirate Blue and a commitment from the University to make athletics and recreation a priority for the student-body, Seton Hall has already begun a large number of those enhancements. A new student fitness center is scheduled to be completed by summer 2013 and plans are in place to add a new scoreboard to Owen T. Carroll Field, revamp the student-athlete training room facility and create additional space for Academic Support Services. The men’s basketball locker room and women’s basketball coaching suite were each renovated during the 2011-12 season.

The Pirates have also experienced a number of on field successes since Lyons came to Seton Hall. The men’s basketball team finished the 2011-12 season with a 21-13 overall mark, matching the program’s highest win total since the 2003-04 season and advancing to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. The baseball team captured the BIG EAST Championship at the conclusion of the 2011 season, the third in program history and first since 2001. The women’s soccer, volleyball and baseball programs all qualified for BIG EAST Championship competition during the 2011-12 season, with the women’s soccer program posting its most successful campaign since 1999.

Lyons has instituted a number of new events to help honor both its current and former student-athletes. In addition to the annual SAAC Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, Seton Hall held its first Senior Awards Banquet as a way to recognize its graduating seniors. He also refined the 2012 SHU Athletics Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony by hosting it in conjunction with a golf tournament at the Fairmount Country Club in Chatham, N.J.

Seton Hall’s student-athletes have exhibited success in a number of ways off the court as well, through community service initiatives and achievement in the classroom. The Pirates’ community outreach programs demonstrated outstanding involvement from every varsity program during the 2011-12 academic year, as Seton Hall’s student-athletes participated in an array of activities to benefit the community. Seton Hall

also hosted its First Annual Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, providing its student-athletes with a chance to learn from and meet speakers from across the sports landscape.

Lyons arrived at Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics, establishing its department as one of the top programs in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He was the chief administrator for the Gaels’ 21 NCAA Division I athletics programs.

Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and also displayed a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offices.

Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department saw unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. Lyons also made his mark at Iona in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history.

Before elevating to Director of Athletics at Iona, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance.

As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons.

A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete.

In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College.

Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, who is a member of the faculty at Rutgers University.

Intercollegiate athletics is a rewarding extracurricular activity that can add a special dimension to student life. At Seton Hall, all student-athletes participate in the academic counseling program. Director of Academic Support Services for student-athletes, Matt Geibel, and his staff help ensure that student-athletes successfully balance their commitments to academics and athletics.

Geibel, Associate Director Amanda DiDonato, Academic Advisor Ryan Westman and two graduate assistant, Marissa Muoio and Zachary Romash provide support along with learning consultants and numerous tutors.

They monitor classroom performance by maintaining contact with faculty, monitoring study halls, facilitating advisement and overseeing compliance with university and NCAA academic regulations. The office of Academic Support also coordinates all institutional, regional and national award recognition.

Life Skills MissionTo provide life skills support in the areas of academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service through the distribution of NCAA, BIG EAST Conference and Seton Hall resources. Seton Hall University’s Life Skills program will provide on-going educational opportunities to student-athletes to further develop these areas and make our student-athletes into successful leaders of the future.

Athletics ExcellenceSeton Hall is committed to excellence in all areas and strives to provide its programs with the resources to succeed on the field of competition. The Department of Athletics will seek out top professionals to serve as coaches, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning specialists who can impart expert knowledge and direction to the student-athletes.

Academic ExcellenceSeton Hall provides a comprehensive academic support program for its Student-Athletes. Specifically, the Office of Academic Support Services for Student Athletes provides tutoring, review sessions, study groups and writing development for Seton Hall student-athletes, as well as regular interaction with faculty.

Career DevelopmentSeton Hall provides a comprehensive career development program for its student-athletes in conjunction with The Career Center at Seton Hall University. Components of the program range from resume writing and interviewing techniques, to the graduate school application processes, seminars from business leaders within the Seton Hall community and education on post-graduate scholarship opportunities.

Personal DevelopmentSeton Hall provides several seminars on different personal topics throughout the year. Workshops vary from sports nutrition to hazing prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, and business etiquette.

The primary objective of the Seton Hall sports medicine staff is to provide the highest quality of evidenced based health care to the University’s student-athletes. In so doing we strive to limit risk and exposure to injury mechanisms, provide immediate response to all medical needs of the student-athlete and rehabilitate any and all injuries suffered by the student-athlete.

The three main goals of the Seton Hall University sports medicine staff are that all student-athletes are safe and free of injury, all student-athletes achieve their maximum athletic potential, and all Seton Hall University Athletic teams achieve BIG EAST Conference success.

Seton Hall student-athletes enjoy a 2,500-square foot varsity weight room, which opened in the fall of 1997. The facility offers versatile, multi-purpose and comprehensive upper and lower body strength training equipment. Among the features of the facility are an Olympic lifting area and cardiovascular equipment such as Stairmasters, treadmills, bicycles and a versaclimber. The room offers free weights, target-loaded machines and circuit training stations. Angelo Gingerelli & Nanna Rivers work with each team to provide expert coaching and guidance.

MEMBERS OF THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE

The 2012-13 academic year is the 34th in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth and continues to make strides in improving the quality and depth of the storied league.

The BIG EAST Conference has been always been driven by lofty goals. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2011-12 year was no different.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Georgetown women’s cross country team captured its first NCAA Championship. The win by the Hoyas marked the third-straight year a BIG EAST team has won the women’s cross country championship, with Villanova winning the past two. The Louisville men’s basketball team advanced to the Final Four in New Orleans. Connecticut field hockey reached the NCAA semifinals, as did the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team. The Irish women’s basketball team and Syracuse women’s lacrosse team each reached the NCAA finals. USF softball reached the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., for the first time in program history.

The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the third time in the last four years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Denver, with the Fighting Irish advancing to the national title game for the second-straight year.

BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships. Sheila Reid won her second-straight NCAA Women’s Cross Country title. Syracuse hurdler Jarret Eaton won the 60-meter hurdle championship in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Notre Dame won the distance medley relay at the same championship. Georgetown’s Emily Infeld won the 3,000-meter run. Carlos Almeida of Louisville won the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Three BIG EAST teams won bowl games, while the BIG EAST representative in the Bowl Championship Series won its bowl game for the fourth time in the last seven years- a streak that includes wins against the ACC, Big 12 and SEC champions.

The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in 18 of the nation’s top 50 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain more than one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. The BIG EAST will welcome UCF, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple in all sports in 2013-14. Temple football will join the league in 2012, with Boise State and San Diego State joining the following year and Navy in 2015.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 32 national championships in six different sports and 137 student-athletes have won individual national titles through 2011-12.

BIG EAST basketball squads have captured 11 titles in the last 13 years. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. The BIG EAST placed three men’s basketball teams in the Final Four in 1985, the only time this has occurred in NCAA history.

Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance.

While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics.

Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto was the third commissioner of the BIG EAST, serving from 2009-2012, after seven years as the conference’s senior associate commissioner.

The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past nine years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball.

The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.

PIRATE BLUE ATHLETIC FUNDRecognizing Seton Hall University’s long and distinguished athletic history, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund was founded in 1985 by Pirate legend Richie Regan ’53 as the University’s athletic fund-raising vehicle.

Through annual contributions, Pirate Blue enables the University to fund critical initiatives such as recruiting, travel, equipment, facilities, and academic ad-vising. The funds raised through Pirate Blue are essential in allowing Seton Hall to remain competitive in the BIG EAST Conference.

MEDIA SERVICESSeton Hall University and opponent’s game notes, up-to-date statistics, BIG EAST Conference notes and statistics, and game flip cards will be available to working members of the media. Halftime and final statistics and will also be distributed on press row when applicable. Fax services are available upon request.
