Welcome...

At Tiffi n University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic pro-grams have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual ac-colades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study con-ducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffi n Uni-versity in the last fi ve years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing fi eld and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confi dent the future will also be highly successful for Tiffi n University athletics.

The 2011-2012 Tiffi n University Women’s basketball team enjoyed a record-setting season, shattering the single season wins record while posting a 21-7 mark and reach-ing the GLIAC Tournament Semifi nals, their farthest trip yet into postseason play. As exciting as the year was, the Dragons plan on making just as many waves in 2012-13 as some talented new recruits will blend with solid return-ing letterwinners. Leading the charge for the Dragons is 2011 Second Team All-GLIAC standout Karli Mast, who averaged 11 ppg while also fi nishing last season second on the team with 308 points. She was also the team-leader with 58 three-pointers (.395 pct.). Her three-pont totals were fourth overall in the GLIAC. Also back is two-time Second Team selection Jessica Harris. Harris was second in overall rebounding in the GLIAC with 9.3 rpg while also averaging 10.5 ppg in just 23 minutes of action per game. Harris is also currently second in TU history in career rebounds per game with a 8.6 per game average while also staying on pace to be-

come Tiffi n’s all-time career rebounding leader during the season. Also back for TU is senior guard Melissa Gilliland (4.5 ppg) and point guard Steph Kelly (4.2 ppg), while sophomore forward Mary Kate Camp-bell returns after missing last year due to injury. In the 6-1 junior’s 2010-11 season, she averaged 2.2 ppg and 2.3 rpg. Juniors Jillian Adams (5-9 for-ward) and Erica Mathis (5-11 forward) also add depth off the bench. The Dragons will also feature fi ve key new recruits this season. They will be point guard Mackenzie Storlie of Louisville HS and 5-9 guards Jordan Fraley (Perkins HS) and Macy Byrd (Perry HS). Tiffi n will also add depth and size to the post with 6-1 Marisa Liburdi of Lapeer West HS and 6-1 Jes-sica Farr of Paulding HS.

In three years as an assistant coach at Wheeling Jesuit University, she helped the Cardinals compile an impressive 67-26 record with two back to back seasons of 20 plus wins. Oswald’s contributions at Wheeling Jesuit saw the Cardinals post their most wins since 1992-93 (27), and advance to the NCAA Tournament twice, a fi rst in the program’s history. They also captured the 2005 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship.

During the 2005-06 season Oswald stepped in as interim head coach for ten games, racking up an impressive 9-1 record during WVIAC play. Under Oswald’s tutelage six players were selected as All-WVIAC honorees.

Prior to joining the Cardinals, Oswald spent three seasons (2001-2004) as an assistant coach at Kent State University.

During her time at Kent State she worked with both guards and post players (developing two All-MAC selection post players). While at Kent State the Golden Flashes were the 2002 Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament champi-ons, participating in the NCAA tournament in 2002 & the WNIT in 2004.

A native of Berlin, OH Oswald joined the Flashes after spending 2 seasons as an assistant at her alma mater Berlin-Hiland High School, where she helped coach them to a 28-0 record and a Division IV State Championship in 2000.

Tiffi n University’s women’s basketball program has underwent numerous changes in the 90-plus years that the Dragons have had bas-ketball. The women’s team saw action sporadically during the fi rst two decades of this century, but started to play a regular schedule in 1924-25, fi nishing 10-0 that year. The program continued until the close of the 1936-37 season, posting a 54-28-3 record during that stretch. Dragons leaders included Hall of Famer Edith Miller. The program didn’t return for another 48 years. In 1984-85, women’s basketball fi nally returned to Tiffi n University, posting a winning record in its third year after returning (12-11 in 1986-87). In 1990-91, TU won its only Mid-Ohio Conference title, fi nishing 18-9 that season and setting a season record for wins that was not eclipsed until last season when the Dragons won 21. The Dragons also currently have seven women’s basketball players in the Tiffi n University Hall of Fame - Edith Yambert Miller, Lois Collins Conrad, Tracy Almanson-Murphy, Angie Shardo Nunn, Susan Miller Hughes, Jenny Kane, and Melanie Sears. Eight years ago the Dragons earned their fi rst ever NAIA National Tournament trip under coach Leslie Mugg. Angie Nunn is the Dragons’ all-time leading scorer with 1820 points, while Tracy Alman-son is the leading rebounder with 802. But this season’s Dragons have many players who could easily change the face of the TU women’s basketball record books before their careers are through.

Connecting with the Tiffi n community is one of the Tiffi n University’s Women’s Basketball team’s main goals. It has been a priority for many years for the young women on the basketball team to be involved in community events to enhance their time here as Tiffi n University stu-dent-athletes.

The Lady Dragons strive to be a positive infl uence on and off the court by participating in many different community service activities. It is also their belief that one of their responsibilities as a member of the program is to be a positive role model for the youth in the community by giving back through these community service events. This year’s team has been no different, partici-pating in different events around the community.

This past year, the Dragon Women’s Bas-ketball team participated in several different community service activities.

• Hosting free youth basketball clinics at the local elementary schools

• Trash pick-up on State Route 224

• Morenci Bible Fellowship Church work day

The team is not quite done with their service yet either. They are also planning to volunteer time to Habitat for Humanity later on this winter, as well as hosting the free junior clinics when their season commences this coming spring.

The Gillmor Student Center has been the home arena for Tiffi n Universi-ty basketball since the 1988-89 season - and, like the saying goes, there’s no place like home. In addition to the main auditorium, the building also contains over 17 offi ces, shower and locker rooms, a training room, a bookstore, a media conference room, a Student Activities room, the Student Affairs offi ces, the Channel 10 broadcast center, the Tiffi n University Hall of Fame, and Trophy Gallery. A complete renovation of the Gillmor Center was recently completed. The Dining Commons, the Osceola Theater, a student lounge, expanded recreation room, numerous new offi ces, and expanded parking areas

are just a few of the new renova-tions. The complex nearly tripled in size and has grown to service even more of the Tiffi n Univer-sity community.
