What is Estrellita?Estrellita is a supplemental, phonics based, accelerated beginning Spanish reading program. There are two versions, one for Pre-Kindergarten and the other for grades K-1. Estrellita utilizes a multi-sensory approach by incorporating visual cues, chanting, kinesthetic activities and whole language strategies. The many home study materials, included in our program, promote parental involvement.

Program Goals• Provide Pre-K children with a head start by developing a strong sense of phonemic awareness and basic

blending skills in preparation for kindergarten.• Bridge the gap in Kindergarten from non-reader to reader in 4-9 months.• Accelerate 1st grade children through the decoding process within 6-8 weeks.• Build early reading fluency and comprehension in order to prevent learning problems later.• Assist children in successful transition to English by providing a strong foundation in the primary

language in their early years.

Component BreakdownSonidos Components

• Initial sounds are acquired quickly (1st grade: 4 weeks; Kinder: 4 months; Pre-K: 8 months)• Chanting a picture-to-sound chart quickly establishes a strong “association” between the

picture and its beginning sound

Blending Components• No more “ma, me, mi, mo, mu.” A unique and novel way of teaching syllables• K-1 students learn a set of 23 syllables at a time, instead of only the traditional 5• Pre-K students learn a segment of 4-5 syllables at a time using a hands-on approach• A review of all the consonants occurs naturally as students learn the syllables• Kinesthetic approach to blending and beginning reading• Student-centered, hands-on activities• Research based Whole Language Strategies• Visual aids that assist children in seeing the relationship of the “parts” to the “whole”• Accelerated fluency through home study reading material and parental involvement• Mini-books for children to read with picture support• Big Books to introduce the stories to children

RTI Tiers 1,2, and 3 (RTI-100)Purpose:Estrellita’s Response to Intervention program really works, it effectively fills the gap left by major reading programs. Use of Estrellita with Tier 1 students dramatically reduces the need for Tier 2 intervention, and is a safety net for struggling readers in Tier 2.

Estrellita intervention (RTI) uses high-quality instruction and scientific research-based tiered interventions aligned with individual student needs. Explicit, systematic and intensive instruction in phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding strategies help to pull struggling readers back from the brink. Estrellita builds fluency through hands-on activities and home study material, and includes ongoing assessment and frequent monitoring of student progress.

INTERVENTION

Essential Estrellita Components for a School-Wide RTI ImplementationThe following are essential components for a successful school-wide implementation of Estrellita in an RTI setting across all three tiers of instruction.

K-1 Estrellita Program PackageCore program used in general classrooms for all Tier 1 students receiving Estrellita instruction.

Games & ActivitiesThe Games & Activities are used in the general classroom. Because differentiated instruction is crucial to the RTI process, as well as to the success of Estrellita in the general classroom (Tier 1), teachers will utilize flexible, small groups to deliver differentiated activities/instruction. While the teacher works with one group, the other groups will work with various games and activities tailored to their level and needs. The Games & Activities are part of the Estrellita Pre-Kindergarten Early Literacy Program.

Estrellita Pre-Kindergarten Early Literacy ProgramWhen a student is classified as Tier 2 because he or she is not making adequate progress in the general education classroom, modifications need to be made for these students. The Estrellita Pre-Kindergarten Early Literacy Program breaks down the K-1 skills into smaller, manageable chunks and provides many activities to practice these skills.

Estrellita RTI ComponentThe Estrellita RTI Component consists of the Estrellita RTI Guide, the Estrellita RTI Framework: 10-Step Plan for Estrellita Implementation & Professional Development within an RTI Framework in a School-wide Setting, and the Estrellita RTI Progress Monitoring Graphs, Charts & Probes.

Optional: Parent Packets in English for Two-Way Dual Immersion ProgramsThe Sonidos Iniciales Parent Packets (Spanish version) are part of the K-1 Program. The Parent Packets in English contain the instructions in English for English-Speaking parents of children in dual immersion programs.

Optional: Additional Individual Record Booklets for K-1The K-1 Estrellita Basic Program Package comes with 60 consumable Individual Record Booklets for assessment. Recommended assessment for RTI occurs three times during the school year. You may need additional booklets.

The RTI materials need to be purchased in conjunction with RTI Professional Development to ensure fidelity to the program. Please see Page 19 for more details on the RTI Professional Development options.

Pre-Kindergarten Early Literacy Program (EPK-100)Purpose:The purpose of the Pre-Kindergarten Early Literacy Program is to teach students the sounds of the letters by immersing them in a variety of phonemic awareness activities and to provide practice with basic blending in order to prepare children for reading in kindergarten.

The Pre-Kindergarten Early Literacy Program teaches individual sounds through a combination of whole language, phonics-based strategies that are developmentally appropriate and fun for young children. The program includes a variety of activities such as stories, rhymes, riddles, cheers, and games designed to develop and foster phonemic awareness. The program addresses a variety of learning styles by incorporating a multisensory approach (audio, verbal, tactile and kinesthetic) into the instructional content. It promotes parental involvement throughout the program. There are individual and group assessment charts for both the Sonidos and Blending components.

K-1 Accelerated Program (P-600)Purpose:The purpose of the K-1 Estrellita Accelerated Program is to bridge the gap from non-reader to reader in a short period of time relative to grade level. In first grade and above, Estrellita accelerates children through the decoding process in 6-8 weeks. Kindergarten children read within four to nine months.

The K-1 Estrellita Accelerated Program is an accelerated, systematic, explicit phonics program which provides children with the phonics tools necessary to decode beginning reading material in Spanish. This developmentally appropriate program provides an individualized approach whereby students progress at their own pace. It is designed to be accelerated but is also adoptable to remedial students (i.e., highly adaptable to individual needs). The reading materials progress in order of complexity, from simple to complex, thus providing increasing levels of difficulty. The program promotes parental involvement in children’s learning. New additions include numerous tools for ongoing student assessment!

SIFE Program for Older Students (ESC-100)Purpose:This streamlined curriculum is primarily designed for recent arrivals and for children designated as SIFE (Students with Interrupted Formal Education). Although these students have had limited to no formal schooling, their cognitive skills have been developed through their varied life experiences. Therefore, you will find that many of these students will make remarkable gains. The biggest hurdle for these children is not academics, but the low self-confidence they may feel at being behind academically. This streamlined version of Estrellita is designed to instill confidence as students quickly master the laddered/sequential curriculum. For students who already know how to decode, the Escalera curriculum will serve to reinforce decoding skills, build fluency and basic comprehension. Additionally, it will provide a super-accelerated jumpstart into reading.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Professional development provides teachers and support staff with the necessary training to ensure that all children receive quality reading instruction in Estrellita. Participants will be exposed to all of the essential components of the program including implementation, assessment and timelines. Participants will learn various Estrellita multisensory activities incorporating visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic modalities in order to meet the needs of students with different learning styles. Incorporation of parental involvement activities throughout the Estrellita curriculum will be emphasized.

Estrellita offers a variety of different Professional Development programs to support the curriculum being used in the classroom. The Professional Development courses can be purchased separately or at a discount price in a bundled format. We strongly encourage Districts to consider utilizing Professional Development to reinforce the fidelity to the program’s core methodology and to assure that children learn to read more quickly and more successfully.

COMPONENT BREAKDOWNIn-service training: This will consist of an intensive two-day training to all teachers and support staff in the RTI implementation. Participants will be exposed to the essential components of an RTI model as it relates to literacy instruction. They will learn how to apply Estrellita to the RTI 3-tiered reading intervention model. Teachers and support staff will learn how to provide strategies and interventions for Tier 2 students. Use of Estrellita’s assessment instruments for student placement and ongoing assessment will be explained. Teachers will learn how to monitor student progress and provide differentiated instruction, based on informal assessments. Participants will learn how to implement Estrellita in an RTI setting utilizing a 10-Step model.

Site-based Implementation Support Days: Estrellita will provide RTI site-based implementation support visits to schools participating in the Tier 2 (RTI) implementation. Certified Estrellita Specialists will be assigned to each of these schools for the number of days specified by the project administrator.

Site implementation support visits will include:

• Classroom visit by the Estrellita Specialist to assess the RTI implementation and differentiation of instruction.

• Grade-level lab site observations for participating teachers and support staff. Lab may consist of a teacher working with a small group of students with the other staff observing.

• Grade level debriefing and planning meetings to include the school-wide RTI team.

• Meeting with 2nd grade (and above) classroom bilingual teachers who are using Estrellita as an intervention program for recent arrivals etc. The Estrellita consultant will provide strategies and interventions designed to meet the specific needs of each student under discussion.

• Debriefing and planning meetings with the administration (principal, intervention specialist, etc.)

• Determine progress and plan for future visits.

K-1 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTCOMPONENT BREAKDOWNIn-service: Estrellita will offer an intensive two-day training on all aspects of the K-1 program. Teachers will learn how to implement Estrellita as an accelerated program for Tier 1 students in the regular classroom and will be taught how to effectively utilize the Estrellita materials.

K-1 Estrellita Building Blocks, Assessment and Progress MonitoringThe focus of the first half of the day of training is on the five building blocks of Estrellita which include: Sonidos Iniciales, Sílabas, Palabras, Oraciones and Whole-to-Part-to-Whole (Cuentos). The training incorporates classroom techniques and provides tips on effective tools to illustrate each Building Block. This includes participant interaction, classroom techniques and modeling.

The focus of the second half of the day will be on the implementation, assessment and timeline of the Estrellita program. This training incorporates the assessment piece and the Implementation Checklist (fidelity list). Participants will be taught how to administer the Placement Test and how to utilize the results to inform instruction as well as to assist in forming small groups. Additionally, teachers will learn how to effectively utilize the Estrellita progress monitoring tools.

Estrellita Differentiation of Instruction: Games and Activities (Materials purchased separately) This one-day training will include differentiation of instruction with centers utilizing the Estrellita Games & Activities. These fun and interactive games can be used in a whole class setting, with small groups or in centers. Emphasis will be placed on utilization of small groups in order to maximize student teacher interaction and to help teachers differentiate instruction for a wide range of abilities. This training also provides time for the teachers to assemble and laminate the materials so they are classroom ready. Games and Activities enhance the Estrellita curriculum and provide differentiated instruction training through small groups and centers.

Coaches In-Service Training: Each school will designate a staff member to be the “Estrellita Coach.” In most cases, the coaches will already serve in some administrative capacity, i.e. school literacy coach, bilingual coordinator, assistant principal, etc. Coach’s responsibilities are as follows:

• To oversee the Estrellita implementation• To ensure that Estrellita is being implemented with fidelity• To provide support to the teachers

All coaches will receive a full day of professional development. Topics will include a review of the coaches’ responsibilities, a review of the assessment instruments, development of a customized plan and agenda for the site-based follow-up visits, and an overview of the Parent Training program.

Coaches Support Follow-Up Sessions: The activities for the Coaches Support Follow-up Sessions may include the following activities:

• An overview of the implementation of Estrellita• Agenda to be predetermined based on coaches/schools needs

Site-based implementation Support Days: These are full days conducted with a certified Estrellita Specialist. These visits will include classroom visitations, “lab-site” demonstrations (project teachers observing another teacher working with a group of Estrellita students followed by a debriefing session), and grade level strategy and debriefing meetings. The Estrellita Specialist will work with the Estrellita coach and school administration in order to maximize the Estrellita implementation for that school’s specific needs. Site Implementation visits help to ensure that the program is implemented properly so that children reach their full potential.
