A Striking Event Committee
Midge Perlman ShaftonIrving B. Harris Leadership AwardBestows the agency’s highest honor for outstanding leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of adults, children and families.
Not only is Midge Perlman Shafton past President of JCFS, she was the first woman to ever assume that role. She is past Chairman of both the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and the Jewish Women’s Foundation. She is a past recipient of the Julius Rosenwald Memorial Award, the Federation’s highest honor. Shafton originally connected with JCFS decades ago when building her own family through adoption. “I like that I can bring a history of experience and knowledge of the community that makes a difference in discussions today,” says Shafton, who remains an active volunteer in the Jewish community.
Harry Huzenis Charles Huzenis
What’s Possible Awards Recognizes those who have shown exceptional resilience, overcoming life’s obstacles to achieve personal and professional success.
“We learned to overcome adversity and to persevere from our father,” say the Huzenis brothers, whose father was a Holocaust survivor. Immigrants from Sweden to Chicago as young boys, Harry and Charley Huzenis lived from the time they were small boys through their teen years in a JCFS children’s home, before going onto college and founding the successful Jameson Realty Group. “The home brought a stability and structure to our lives. The workers served as role models, as many were in college, planning their futures. It made us realize we could do the same,” say the brothers. Two of seven children, the siblings remain close knit and connected today.
Thank you for your support of Jewish Child & Family Services.
We are thrilled that we were able to celebrate this special afternoon with you at A Striking Event. By being part of this fun event, you have made it possible for JCFS to continue to provide needed counseling, education and support to thousands of children and families throughout Chicago.
We are humbled to have had the opportunity to honor three incredible community leaders today: Midge Perlman Shafton, recipient of the Irving B. Harris Leadership Away, and Harry Huzenis and Charles Huzenis, recipients of the What’s Possible Awards. The experiences and continued support of JCFS from each of these individuals made them perfect selections for these high honors. Congratulations.
A special thank you to this year’s benefit committee and the entire JCFS Board of Directors. This event would not have been a success without your dedication and generosity.
And last, but not least, thank you to our benefit co-chairs. While I might be slightly biased, I am not sure this event could take place without the faithful leadership of Elizabeth Ballis and Laurie Price. Thank you to you both for the work you have done on behalf of those in need throughout Chicago.
Again, thank you for YOUR support. We are so pleased you have chosen to share this wonderful summer afternoon with us.
Stephen R. BallisJCFS Board President
Over 150 years ago, Jewish Child & Family Services (JCFS) began as a soup kitchen as a result of a community coming together, recognizing a need, and doing something about that need. Now, with programs that provide residential services, financial assistance, counseling, foster care, special education and so much more, JCFS continues to thrive as a result of our community coming together.
Today, at our 3rd annual A Striking Event, we see this community and the care you have for those in need. Thank you for your support of JCFS. It is through your generous support that we are able to continue meeting the needs of those around us. Community is truly at the core of our success.
Thank you to the JCFS Board of Directors, under the leadership of Stephen Ballis, for their continued dedication, collaboration and support. And a very special thank you to the co-chairs of this essential event, Elizabeth Ballis and Laurie Price—you know how to make hard work look like fun!
But, I would be remiss, if I didn’t acknowledge the true stars of this afternoon: our honorees. Very special congratulations and our deepest appreciation go to Midge Perlman Shafton, Harry Huzenis and Charles Huzenis. It has been an honor to celebrate your accomplishments and lifelong support of JCFS. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to publically acknowledge how important you are to us.
Here is to another incredible year in service to our community!
