    SUPPORTING A WAY OF LIFE

The Fishing industry is constantly developing to adapt to the modern world and its view on shing, and the Fishermens Mission is as dedicated as ever to being a constant support to our Fishermen, their families and the risk they put themselves at; for them it is a way of life.

The Adur & Worthing Food & Drink Festival promises to be a more than successful debut event, celebrating the best food from the surrounding area, and the range of food available as well as the quality of it will be something to remember. The festival is certainly one that the area should be proud of. With this pride, the hard-working Fishing industry is something to keep in mind. Hard-working is only half the story as, unknown to many, it remains to be the most dangerous peacetime

occupation in the UK. It is oft en thought that the danger is just that of death and serious injury, when many other aspects such as a life of debt and uncertainty or a retirement of loneliness are also such dangers. It is one of the toughest ways of life and it is done to provide the food on our plates.

The Fishermens Mission ghts poverty and despair in our shing communities by providing emergency and welfare support to shermen and their families. We are proud to be involved in the Adur & Worthing Food & Drink Festival and would like to thank the organisers and the local community for their continued support as we carry out our vital work. We would like to encourage the celebration of the nest foods of the area as well as a celebration of a way of life.

IN TODAYS age, the fast food culture often leads us to forget all of the hard work that goes into putting the food on our plates. Its even more common to forget that the fi sh that we eat is the only common food source that is still hunted, and that there are extreme risks that come with such a job.Not quite a

funny walk Daniel Beals, writer and actor of the oxygen group and guest writer for The Treason Show, Bafta nominated, has put together an alternative Tourist Food Walk.

You will be lead through the streets of Worthing and given completely untrue and useless information about Worthing, its residents and places to eat. You can expect to laugh and be offended, maybe at the same time. You will be lead around by Field Marshall Mount Battenburg. (no relation). His wealth of knowledge has left him many years ago and whats left will be of no use to you but do the Funny Walk and you will have knowledge you never knew.

We will be holding walks every 45 minutes through the day 7th & 8th July from Steyne Gardens.

HorticultureTHE CLIMATE and fertile soil of the Worthing area insured the growth of market gardening during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In the early 19th century there were only three gardens supplying fruit and vegetables to the town, but this slowly grew during the century in and around Worthing with the building of glass houses. By the mid 19th century and the arrival of the railway, the town was supplying fruit and vegetables to both Brighton and London.

At the height of the market gardening industry over 600 tonnes of fruit a year left Worthing for destinations all over England, particularly in the North where the climate was cooler. Worthing became well known for growing grapes, cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries and melons.

HISTORY . . .Mackerel (spring) and herring (autumn) were the main catch of Worthing fi shermen but crabs, shrimps, lobsters and oysters were also brought ashore.

Records show fi shing as a small but signifi cant industry dating back to the 16th century. In 1733 John Wilkes visited Worthing in the hope of seeing the great fi shery there.

In 1887 110 fi shing boats sailed from Worthing beaches, and in 1899 it was recorded that over 170 tonnes of fi sh were caught. Oysters were over-fi shed to extinction by the 1830s, with 50 million caught in 1824. By 1914 the catch was down to 52 tons, and the fi sh market by the pier closed in the 1920s. By the 1950s the fi shing industry had declined in the town although you can still buy fresh fi sh from Worthings beaches on a daily basis.

The architecture of the historic town of Shoreham-by-Sea refl ects its fi shing history. The rise of Brighton and Worthing and the coming of the railway in 1840 prepared the way for Shoreham-by-Seas rise as a rapidly growing Victorian sea port with several shipyards and an active coasting trade.
