Dear Friends of the Yellowstone Historic Center,
In 2012, the Yellowstone Historic Center continued to experience great success with our museum operations
and historic preservation projects. We remain energized and encouraged by the tenacious support of our
community, friends, and other organizations.
This year we embarked on renovation projects in the Union Pacific Dining Lodge and at the Museum in the
Union Pacific Depot. We are especially pleased with the work at the Depot, which included major electrical and
structural repairs that contribute to ensuring the long-term preservation of this storied building that dates back to
1909.
Our museum visitors enjoyed several new exhibits, including an exhibit on the history of West Yellowstone’s
schools and an exhibit about the “Yellowstone Savages” which conveyed the story of Yellowstone Park’s
concession workers.
Perhaps most gratifying is the growth that we see in our partnerships with other entities and individuals in our
community and beyond. Through these partnerships we gain not only funding but an expansion of ideas and a
shared commitment to the preservation and interpretation of the heritage of travel to Yellowstone and the
unique role that West Yellowstone played in that heritage.
We look forward to 2013 with the opportunities that it offers, and with gratitude to our supporters who continue
to turn opportunities into reality.
Sincerely,
Rawhide Johnson,
Chair, Board of Directors

YHC Mission Statement:
The Yellowstone Historic Center seeks to understand, preserve, and interpret the
unique cultural heritage of West Yellowstone and the Hebgen Lake Basin, and the connection of that heritage to the development of transportation and visitation
to Yellowstone National Park. The YHC will accomplish its mission by:
Operating a Museum in the Union Pacific Depot that honors the YHC’s mission and origins.
Restoring and preserving the buildings located in the Oregon Short Line Terminus Historic District in West Yellowstone, Montana.
Developing a new, year-round museum to house collections, and to preserve these collections and interpret them through displays and educational programs.

2012: The Year in Review
The YHC staff and board of directors joined with members and supporters to undertake a wide variety of projects and programs in 2012. Our achievements that resulted from these partnerships and collaborations ranged from our daily museum services to preserving the historic structures in West Yellowstone’s Oregon Short Line Terminus Historic District.
Museum Operations
Hosted programs and book signings at the Museum including these: Nan Weber presented a program on “Mattie Culver: A Woman’s Journey West” and hosted a
signing for her book of the same title. Elizabeth Watry presented a program and book signing for her new book titled “Women in
Wonderland.” Paul Shea presented information about and signed his book “Images of America: West
Yellowstone.” Author Thornton Waite presented a program about train travel to Yellowstone on Train Day,
June 11, the anniversary of the day the first passenger train arrived in West Yellowstone in 1908.
A total of 157 programs were presented to 1,968 participants. These programs ranged from walking tours of the historic district to public programs presented by Yellowstone National Park Rangers.
18,667 guests visited the Museum. They came from 9 Canadian Provinces (3.5% of the
visitors), 29 foreign countries (6.5%), and 52 US States and Territories (90%).
Hosted traveling exhibits and presented new exhibits at the Museum, including these:
“Mattie Culver: A Woman’s Journey West” featured artifacts on loan to the Museum for the 2012 museum season from Nan Weber.
“A Place called Thorofare: People Wilderness and Wildlife Management” returned for an encore season. This exhibit is on loan from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center through 2013.
“Savage Days in Yellowstone” made its debut, offering museum visitors a glimpse into the life of
Yellowstone concession workers known as “Savages.”
Completed new information and sales desks in the lobby of the Museum.

Preservation & Restoration Projects and Collections Management
Thanks to grants from the Dr. Ezekiel R. and Edna Wattis Dumke Foundation and the Union Pacific Foundation, funds from the Town of West Yellowstone, and generous donations from YHC supporters, improvements were completed at the Union Pacific Depot which houses the YHC Museum. These improvements included the following:
Replacing broken windows Adding insulation to the attic Installing catwalks for access in the attic Repairing and improving the trusses that support the roof of the building Removing old electrical wiring and installing new wiring Adding electrical outlets throughout the building Restoring the original ceiling lights and sconces throughout the building Replacing and adding track lighting for exhibits Removing modern additions that obscured the north windows in the west wing of the Depot Replacing rain gutters on the building Replacing the dropped ceiling in the theater
Completed the restoration of two windows in the Union Pacific Dining Lodge.
Continued to inventory YHC’s collections to ensure we have a complete and accurate record of all the items under our care. To date, over 6,500 items have been inventoried.
Accessioned the following items into our collections: 1913 Yellowstone Trip Photo Album Various articles and photo books of seasonal workers in Yellowstone National Park Various historic photographs and documents Various Yellowstone National Park and West Yellowstone Memorabilia
Close inspection of the rafters in the Depot during renovation
revealed the need for additional structural bracing. Many of the
joints had become unstable and separated over time.

The “Pie on the Porch” fundraiser is held on the Fourth of
July on the Museum’s front porch. In 2012, volunteers
baked over 35 pies which were purchased and consumed
by hungry visitors and tourists.
Our Partners and Supporters YHC attracts a wide variety of partners and supporters because of its unique position in interpreting the history of leisure travel in the United States to our country’s first national park.
As we look forward to 2013 and beyond, we are optimistic that the trend for volunteering and supporting our organization will continue. With this continuing support, we will be able to accomplish our goals of creating new exhibits for our Museum, preserving the historic structures in the Oregon Short Line Terminus Historic District, continuing with our collections management programs, and building new partnerships in the community and region. As we reflect over the accomplishments of the past year, we want to thank our volunteers and contributors who made 2012 a year of which we can all be proud!
Volunteers The YHC is fortunate to have many people interested in volunteering for all sorts of activities – and they have a good time doing it! In 2012, we recorded 889 hours of volunteer assistance. However, these numbers do not reflect the positive impacts derived from the talent and dedication of all the great people who gave us their help.
