Apple Hill® Growers Mission Statement
First Timer Q & ANever visited our ranches before? Here are some tips to get the most out of your visit…
You keep hearing, “You gotta visit Apple Hill®.” Everyone at work tells you about the mouth-watering pro-duce, bakeshop delicacies, superb beers and wines, You-Pick farms, gor-
geous Christmas trees----and on it goes. You know you want to visit, but what is Apple Hill® really- --and what do you do when you get there? There’s a lot going on, but dive right on in. Armed with the answers to the following questions, you’ll feel less overwhelmed and find your experience a lot of fun!!!
What and Where is Apple Hill®? It’s a group of ranches-- -not one ranch and not a geograph-
ical area. Our ranches are so proud of what we do that we trademarked the words “Apple Hill®” so that only our mem-bers can use them. The ranches listed in the Cider Press are the only area businesses that are “Apple Hill®”. The ranches are just east of Placerville and west of Pollock Pines (halfway between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe) on the north side of Highway 50.
When are the Apple Hill® ranches open?
Short answer: all year long! Long answer: Boa Vista Orchards, Jack Russell Farm Brewery, Time Out Spa and the Association wineries are open year ‘round. High Sierra Iris and Wedding Gardens is magnificent in May and the ranches that grow berries and vegetables are open June through the sum-mer (and some even in the fall). Most apple barns and bakeshops open Labor Day weekend and stay open as long as they have fruit available (Mother Nature is in charge here). Christmas Tree farms are all open the day after Thanksgiving (some the weekend before). Use www.applehill.com and our publication, the Cider Press, to find individual ranch hours and activities; they vary as each operates as an independent business.
Welcome to the 48th anni-versary season of the Apple Hill® Growers Association. Founded in 1964 to promote family apple farms, Apple Hill® was originally all about apples. Now, decades later, when our visitors think “Apple Hill®”, they often think “Mom and apple pie”.
This season we ask you to think again. As the picture and theme on the cover of this year’s
Cider Press illustrate, the “pie” is now cut into many dif-ferent “slices”. Apple Hill® has grown into “Apples and So Much More”! Today the pie contains not only apples but also berries, cherries, peaches, nectarines, persim-mons, nuts, pumpkins and winter squash, organics, olive oil, wines, beers, ciders, Christmas trees, vegetables, and flowers. With our expansion to include all these addi-tional products, the accompanying activities and events around the “Hill” have also expanded to include arts, cuisine, weddings, and “So Much More”!
This year’s Cider Press is designed to make it easy to locate all the pieces of the pie. Colored tabs in the middle of the publication will guide you to pages highlighting products, events, and activities in each season. Pick the blue tab for “The Wonders of Winter”. Pick the green tab for “Spring is in the Air”. Pick the yellow tab for “Beat the Summer Heat”. Pick the brown tab for “Bountiful Fall”. Seasonal information is right at your fingertips!
While we are much more than apples, when you think “Apple Hill®” we still want you to remember “Mom”! After 48 years, the moms, the grandmas, and the great grandmas are still in the kitchens and cellars concocting those perennial Apple Hill® favorites. Alongside them, the multiple generations of family members continue raising the crops and welcoming visitors with the hospi-tality that is an Apple Hill® trademark. Even with the decades of changes, Apple Hill® remains a community of small family farms that welcomes you to share the simple pleasures of our homegrown harvests.
So let’s have “pie”! Come often and sample every “piece”.

Once upon a time, there lived a farm-er and his wife. They loved their farm and planted many apple trees
and lots of flowers. They had seven kids. The kids worked on the farm with the farmer and his wife. They milked the cow; they fed the chickens, rabbits, goats and pigs. They rode the pony. They had a dog named Beau (and a few others along the way). They ate dinner together every night when the farmer came in from working outside. Over the years, many visitors came to their farm to buy apple pie, apples and pumpkins and to enjoy the beauty of the farm.
The farmer and his wife taught their kids many important things. The farmer always said, “It’s important that you make a positive impact on society.” He also said, “It’s impor-tant to work hard.” The farmer’s wife worked hard, not only to make a great life for her family, but also to help her neighbors and others in the community. She taught les-sons to the kids by example. The family went to church every Sunday. When the kids were growing up, the farmer and his wife always took care of their own parents, mak-ing sure they had a roof over their heads and a happy family around them.
The seven kids of the farmer and his wife grew and grew. They each made a positive impact on society. They worked hard. They helped people in their communities. They loved their own parents. The kids sometimes got angry with each other, but they never forgot the importance of “family”. Like everybody else, the farmer and his wife sometimes had problems and heartache. But on their farm in Camino, with their apple trees, lots of flowers and their animals, and with their kids, grandkids, and great grand-kids visiting often, the farmer and his wife lived happily after.

It’s the best kept secret when it comes to places to go in the Spring! The Apple Hill® Growers area comes alive with daffodils, dogwood blooms, and, of course, apple blossoms. March is the perfect time to drive along the scenic roads and escape the chilly days by visiting the eight Apple Hill® Growers Winery and Brewery tasting rooms–all within a six-mile radius. In the 1970’s, blind tastings were conducted at UC Davis and wines made with El Dorado County grapes were rated among the highest in all of California! Come see for yourself.
By the end of April, not only are the tulips out, but the apple trees are in full
bloom—what a sight! For the last three years, the Apple Hill® Growers have encouraged visitors to share in the beauty of our area and enjoy fun activities at the wineries, orchards and the brewery. We call it “Apple Blossom Days” and on April 28th and April 29th,
2012, the growers are celebrating the season with a Recipe Treasure-Hunt. By the end of the weekend, area visitors will have a book full of wonderful Apple Hill® Growers recipes! On Saturday of Apple Blossom weekend, many enjoy the
outdoors by registering for the Apple Blossom Trail Run/Walk. The trails meander through our beautiful vineyards and orchards. Whole Foods Market partners with the Apple Hill® Growers to sponsor Apple Blossom Days.
Participating ranches and event details can be found at www.applehill.com
In May, keep the Apple Hill® Growers on your list of places to bring MOM! Wine and beer tasting is always fun or book a day at Time Out Spa for the perfect Mothers’ Day treat. Visit the High Sierra Iris and Wedding Gardens and take in the beauty of the blooms. Before heading home, stop by Boa Vista Orchards which is open year ’round.

The Apple Hill® Growers Association decided decades ago to give back to the community. Unlike some agricultural areas, all members live on or near their farms. Spreading the wealth not only helps individuals, but enhances the place we live.
One of the initial projects along this line was to establish a scholarship program in honor of Norma Brubaker, the beloved first director of the organization. She didn’t call her job by that title, but Norma did everything that needed to be done and anticipated tasks before they were even considered. The Association, together with the Brubaker family, awards two scholarships each year. The 2011-2012 winners both have ties to the membership and worked at ranches during their high-school years.
Lars Bolster – The Bolster name is not only familiar as an Apple Hill® ranch, but other Bolster students have been Apple Hill® scholarship recipients as well. Hard work and academic excellence seem to run in the family.
Lars was very active at El Dorado High School. He was ranked second in the nation in the men’s (18-22) slalom and also received a Varsity letter in water polo. The school principal asked him to help reinvigorate student pride and fervor in campus athletics.
The result was an excited and proud student body.
He is attending the University of Nevada, Reno, and studying Environmental Science and French. Lars sees his work at Apple Hill® ranches as “a valuable character-building experience”. He considers the social skills he learned to be valuable assets that will benefit him in the future.
Sarah Peterson received high praise in a scholarship recommendation from an Apple Hill® member, who particularly remembers the then 14-year-old cutting a 100-pound Christmas tree by hand and carrying it to the sales area for a customer at his farm – a record he says still stands.
Sarah was a Girls’ State representative, twice lettered in academics, was on the principal’s honor roll and was an AP scholar. Even with this rigorous academic schedule, she found time to work in school theater-productions, help as an after-school tutor and volunteer at her church.
She is attending Seattle Pacific University and majoring in Psychology with plans to obtain a Doctorate in the field. Sarah appreciates the work ethic she learned working at Apple Hill® farms and believes, “It will stick with me the rest of my life.”

Apple Hill® Welcomes Our Newest Ranches
Grace Patriot Wines (#55) is located on the historic Irving Ranch (est.1890), the founding site of the original Apple Hill® Growers Association. The winery name and wine label were inspired by Lewis Grace, a Revolutionary War patriot who was the family’s third great grandfather.
Tyler Grace is the family winemaker. After an Ivy League education at Dartmouth, he earned a major in enology at Fresno State. “I particularly enjoy producing big wines from the fruit I’ve cultivated in the vineyard surrounding the winery.” Tyler has earned seven gold medals and two double gold medals in his first 3 vintages. Trevor, his younger brother, manages the tasting room and assists with the winemaking. With a masters degree in fine arts, he has accumulated a series of still photographs of ranch scenes which will be displayed during the Art in the Orchard event in September. Both sons have the committed support of their parents, Bea and Steve Grace, who reside in Reno.
Guests may savor full bodied reds in a comfortable setting reminiscent of simpler times. The public is invited to enjoy the ambiance of the restored ranch and share great wines in the tasting room. Grace Patriot will put memories in every bottle.

Happily, one of the fun questions to pose in Apple Hill® may be, “Which wine pairs best with apple pie?” Our Apple Hill® area boasts seven premium wineries among its members, including Lava Cap, Boeger, Madroña, Fenton Herriott, Wofford Acres, ParaVí and Grace Patriot. Many of the elegant red or white wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel or Chardonnay, handcrafted in these Apple Hill® wineries’ cellars, pair best with classic dishes such as lamb or with hard cheeses. Enjoying apple pie or another delicious apple dessert calls for a sweeter wine, such as a wine made from a Muscato grape or a fortified wine called Port. The remaining sugar, called residu-al sugar after fermentation is done, is higher in these wines compared to tradi-tional table wines. It’s a good thing, too, to have this wonderful sweetness and these full- fruit flavors to complement
the sweet flavors in desserts such as pie. Many experts may recommend a wine
and food pairing based on the “weight” of the wine and the food (e.g. heavier wines such as Petite Sirah pair most often with heavier spices and meat dish-es). Beyond the weight, though, it is worthwhile to con-sider other aspects of the wine including sweetness, acidity, and flavor profile. However, taste and enjoyment of a wine and food pairing are very subjective and these lead everybody on a fun path of discovery.
All of the Apple Hill® wineries have friendly tasting rooms open for you to sample their wines before your purchase. Consider Lava Cap Winery’s or Boeger’s Muscat Canelli, or Madroña’s Fiore,
made from the grape called Muscato Giallo. All three of these white wines are sweeter with notable residual sugar to work well with an apple dessert. There are also some lovely ports available to sample and purchase, including Wofford
Acres’ Posada, Fenton Herriott’s white port, or ParaVí’s dessert wine. And, if you’re looking for a sweeter style (but not “des-sert” ) wine to pair with an after- meal treat, consider Grace Patriot’s Hip Hip Rosé. The secret to
the best wine and food pairing is to keep an open mouth and open mind. Never stop exploring! The next “best” match for your delicious Apple Hill® dessert may be discovered in the next Apple Hill® tasting room! Bon appétit!

June is cherry-picking time followed by berry picking with blueberries, raspberries, boysenberries, marionberries, and olallieberries in abundance throughout the long summer. Finally, late July and early August usher in peaches, nectarines, plums, pears, and “early” apples.
Boa Vista Orchards, Sun Mountain Farm, High Sierra Iris and Wedding Gardens, Goldbud Farms, Pine O’Mine, Harris Tree Farm, Willow Pond Organic Farm, and Bolster’s Hilltop Ranch are open with summer flowers, vegetables and fruit. Goodness Orchard is also open by appointment.
The Apple Hill® wineries, Jack Russell Farm Brewery and Winery, and Time Out Resort & Spa also welcome visitors during the summer months.
In June, July and August visitors are invited to visit select ranches for the
You-Pick experience. Shoppers can also find many favorite Apple Hill® farms selling at local Farmers’ Markets and at others as far away as Lake Tahoe and the San Francisco Bay Area. These include Kids Inc, Harris Tree
Farm, Rainbow Orchards, Wofford Acres Vineyards, Fudge Factory Farm, Goodness Orchard, Collina de Mela, Apple Ridge Farms, Thomas Mountain Organic Farm, High Sierra Iris and Wedding Gardens, and Smokey
Ridge Farmstand & Charcuterie.Events are popular in the summer on
Apple Hill®. Bluestone Meadow stages a Lavender Festival. Time Out Resort & Spa holds a Spa Day for Men. Rainbow Orchards hosts Cowboys and Cornbread. What is there to do?
The Cider Press and www.applehill.com are here to help. Check out the “Calendar of Events” (see back cover) and “Kids Activities” (see p. 8). If you are looking for a ranch with crafters or You-Pick fruit or all the places with fritters so you can have your own taste-off, the “Products and Attractions Guide” (see p. 22) will help you. Want to know which ranches have which apple varieties? Take a look at the “Apples and Other Fruit Guide” (see p. 18). Find out about lunch spe-cialties (see p. 12). Spending the night? We direct you to area businesses found in “Area Dining and Lodging” (see p. 31). Take a drive, explore a ranch you’ve never visited, look for good old-fash-ioned “non-theme-park” fun and create some memories!
When is the best time to come?
It all depends on what you want to do. Most
structured activities hap-pen September-November and many of them are listed in the “Calendar of Events”. Fruit varieties ripen according to the weather (and the different eleva-tions of the ranches) so there are no guaranteed availability dates; check with the individual ranches you plan to visit to make sure they have the fruit you want. October weekends can be VERY busy, so visit on September or November weekends, or during the week, if you want to avoid lines and crowded roads. There are crafters all through apple season, with the most crafters on October weekends. Berries, flowers and fresh vegetables are avail-able in the summer and you can wine and beer taste all year long!
Open Daily - Labor Day WeekendThrough Christmas Eve.

Wine and Beer Guide
Amidst Pear Decline in the late 1960’s, the Farm Advisor and Agricultural Commissioner of El Dorado County had to think fast. Farmers were faced with sure disaster as their orchards died in a matter of months. Substitution crops had to be planted, and fast, to maintain the viability of farming in the area. Most people now know that apple orchards replaced many of the pear orchards and what’s commonly known as “Apple Hill®” was born. But another crop began to
flourish in the Sierra Foothills—grapes. There is a rich story behind the influx
of vintners to El Dorado County in the 1970’s. Spearheaded by the Farm Adviser, Dick Bethell, and Agricultural Commissioner, Edio Delfino, a case was made for the high quality of grapes that could be grown in the County. In the early 70’s, using test-plot grapes from Pleasant Valley to Camino to Gold Hill, blind taste-testing was conducted at UC Davis and the results confirmed that great
wine could be made from grapes grown here. In fact, based on the tests, wine made with our area grapes rated among the highest in all of California! The early El Dorado County grape growers were to be big fish in a small pond as opposed to small fish in a big pond (as in Napa Valley and the San Joaquin Valley). Thank you to mavericks Greg Boeger and Dick Bush of Madroña Vineyards, and to others who were not afraid to open those first wineries in El Dorado County.
It’s Not Legend. It’s Fact!

It is finally “Apple Season”! Most ranches open on Labor Day weekend to offer the “first pick” of the apple crop. Early September is also harvest time for pears, peaches, nectarines and berries, all fruits that find their way into traditional bakeshop creations. Cider mills begin to press out the finest fresh apple cider. Wine grapes mature and the crush begins.
Throughout September and October, additional varieties of apples continue to ripen and pumpkins, winter squash, persimmons and nuts become ready for harvest. The ranches begin to offer handmade crafts, children’s activities, and lunches. Special events include Art in the
Orchard, September 8-9 (see p. 26) and Johnny Appleseed’s Birthday Celebration, September 23 (see p. 30). Many ranches have welcoming activities for our Nevada neighbors on Nevada Day, October 26.
When the “Hill” is in full fall swing, the free Apple Hill® Shuttle runs on
weekends in October (see p. 28) for routes and schedule). Also, on these busy October weekends, vehicles are directed to highway exits that facilitate both traffic flow and safety.
November heralds the 33rd annual Harvest Run,
November 4 (see p. 29). Many ranches welcome our members of the military with special activities on Veteran’s Day, November 12. Bakeshops busily create holiday pies, while the cider mills, wineries, and the
brewery prepare libations for upcoming holiday feasts.
Thanksgiving week brings the opening of the Apple Hill® Christmas-tree farms for the “choose-and-cut-your-own” Christmas-tree experience. Select ranches stay open through the Christmas-tree season and feature bakery specialties, wine, ciders and brews, and fruit and nuts for your holiday celebrations.

The Apple Hill® Growers Association and El Dorado Transit are teaming up again this year to provide a free alterna-tive to driving your car on the busiest harvest weekends. Review the following information to plan your shuttle trip:
• Two shuttle route options, RED route and GREEN route, are shown on the map (see pgs. 20 and 21).
The RED route, serving western ranches, will offer parking and board passengers at Schnell School. Schnell School is
accessed by Highway 50 at Exit #48 and signs from both east and west will direct drivers to the Schnell School parking lot.
The GREEN route, serving eastern ranches, will offer park-ing and board passengers at the US Forest Service Ranger Station located at Eight Mile Rd. The Ranger Station is accessed by Highway 50 at Exit #54 and signs from both east and west will direct drivers to the Forest Service Ranger Station parking lot.
• Riders may access BOTH western and eastern ranches by taking advantage of TRANSFER POINTS between the two routes. TRANSFER STOPS for both RED and GREEN routes are located at Rainbow Orchards on Saturdays and Sundays and at Larsen’s Apple Barn on Sundays only.
• The shuttle will run on the following weekends, weath-er permitting: October 6th and 7th, October 13th and 14th, October 20th and 21st, and October 27th and 28th.
• The hours of operation are 10 AM to 5 PM (weather permitting).
• Buses are scheduled to arrive every 15-20 minutes.
The Apple Hill® Shuttle is sponsored in part by the El Dorado County Air Quality Management District, El Dorado Transit, and the Apple Hill® Growers Association. The shuttle service is free and allows visitors to relax, enjoy the scenery, and “leave the driving to El Dorado Transit”.

What began as an earnest attempt by the Apple Hill® Growers Association to convince visitors that the season didn’t close at the end of October has evolved into one of the most popular family races in Northern California. The grow-ers organized every aspect of the race at first, but after over a decade of hard work, they realized the race had out-grown their capabilities and they found the support they needed in the Camino Schools. In the case of the Camino Schools, it not only “takes a village” to organize the annual Apple Hill® Harvest Run, but also well over 100 family and community members, school staff and students. This dedicat-ed group of volunteers has been in charge for 16 years and 2012 will be the 33rd anniversary of the race.
The Camino Schools’ Parent Teacher Organization and Capital Road Race Management work throughout the year on planning and improving every aspect
of the race although the busiest day, of course, is race day--November 4th this year. That’s when the army of volunteers does everything from handing out race packets to answering a myriad of ques-tions from race participants. The race continues to be supported by the Apple Hill® Growers Association which pro-vides the race site, all race prizes and donates time and services toward making the run a successful continuing event.
The Apple Hill® Harvest Run has grown to the point where it is able to fund a number of programs at Camino Union School District through the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The race also allows the Apple Hill® Growers Association to award two significant annual scholarships to area high-school seniors.
Camino Schools have a student body of approximately 485 children. With a tight economy, schools no longer have funds to pay for the extras that enhance
the learning experience. As one parent said, “Many school programs wouldn’t happen without funds from the race because we’re a small school district with declining enrollment. Our district only has funds for the basics. School is so much more than ABCs and 123s.” The Parent Teacher Organization funds the entire transportation cost for all school educational field trips which comes to over $8,000 annually. A yearly garden program costs $10,000. Visual and Performing Arts such as the Poetry Contest and Talent Show are funded by race proceeds, as well as the Science Fair and the Spelling Bee. Over $2,000 goes to an annual week-long sixth-grade Science camp in Fort Bragg. The Apple Hill® Harvest Run not only impacts every student in the schools, but the combined efforts of the Camino Union School District and the Apple Hill® Growers Association prove that Camino is a truly caring community.

So many visitors ask us, “Can you recommend a good place to eat in the area?” This question comes mostly on days when our growers aren’t serving lunch or when visitors are heading to dinner. Another common question is, “Where, locally, can we spend the night so we can come back to visit more ranches tomorrow?” It’s with these questions in mind that we would like to highly recommend the establishments listed below (for Apple Hill® ranches serving lunch, see page 12).

What’s happening on Historic Main Street this year? The Placerville Downtown
Association is working on a great line-up of events to please one and all. To celebrate and welcome the 63rd Annual Highway 50 Wagon Train on June 9th, Main Street will build on the success of last year’s addition of a BBQ Rib Cook-Off (with sampling, too) during the event. Entertainment will feature a wild west shoot-out, Server’s Races, the Random Stranger Band, a historical display featuring a John Studebaker wheelbarrow, wagon, and car, as well as wheelbarrow demonstrations and more. The Wagon Train will roll down Main Street around 2pm, but the activities downtown will last from 12pm - 6pm.
Last year, a hard-working Event Committee organized the 1st Annual Oktoberfest on Main Street that brought thousands of people downtown. This year, the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest is scheduled for September 22nd and promises to provide even more food and fun. This event will feature the Chicken
Dance, Wiener Dog Races, Bavarian dancers and of course - beer, bratwurst and sauerkraut! This event promises to put a smile on everyone’s face, and will include games and a giant slide for the kids, too!
For the art lovers, the Placerville Art on Parade organization is hosting their successful “Banners On Parade” community art project for the 6th year! Look up to see these beautiful works of art (with a floral theme this year) on

the light poles along Main Street. The beautiful banners will debut on Historic Main Street in June and be exhibited until mid- October, when they will be taken down and sold at a Silent Auction during the October 20th Art & Wine Festival.
Accompanying the banners on the light poles will be the beautiful, blooming flower baskets that adorn Main Street each year. A partnership has been established between PDA and
MORE (Mother Lode Rehabilitation Enterprises). MORE’s clients water the baskets throughout the season, and they do a terrific job! A fundraising campaign was launched this year to maintain this “growing” project on Historic Main Street and businesses, organizations and individuals supported the effort with their kind donations.
With so many exciting events and projects being planned, there is a lot to see and celebrate in Placerville.
These activities and events bring a sense of pride to those who live, work or visit this vibrant community! And there are many other special events to stimulate your senses, like Girls Night Out, Bell Tower Brewfest, Antique & Craft Fairs, Car Shows and much more. Now is the season to come to Apple Hill® to choose and cut your perfect Christmas Tree! And if Mother Nature cooperates, maybe you’ll even see a dusting of snow. Several of our ranches specialize in Christmas Trees. Crystal Creek Tree Farm, Hillside Tree Farm, McGee Christmas Tree Farm, Rapetti Farms, Marvin Larsen Ranch and the two Roberts Christmas Tree Farms spend their year concentrating on creating the most beautiful trees for your holiday. A number of our apple ranches have Christmas trees as well (see p.23). While Douglas Firs and White Firs
are very popular, you might consider a Blue Spruce, Nordmann Fir or Silvertip to grace your home for 2012. And while you’re here, don’t forget to warm up by enjoying a hot beverage and a freshly-
made treat at one of the several bakeshops that are open until mid-December (see map p.20-21). Coming a little later? You can still satisfy your sweet tooth right up until Christmas Eve at Abel’s Apple Acres, Harris Tree
Farm, Boa Vista and High Hill Ranch. In January, the trees go dormant and the
ranchers can sit back and relax a bit while watching for rain (or even snow). And
while the farm work isn’t completely done (January and February are the months for cleanup, pruning and spraying) you might just run into some of the growers while visiting the Association wineries and Jack Russell Farm Brewery and Winery. The Tasting/Sales Rooms are cozy at this time of year and the proprietors rarely too busy to chat, being able to give you answers to

38 Apple Hill® Cider Press38 Apple Hill® Cider Press
by Joan DelfinoThe year is 1962; the
place a farm kitchen. Several neighbors are gathered around the table, grim faced. The news is the same from each; not only hardly a pear crop, but trees dying due to a devastating dis-ease. What to do? Sell out and become a “bed-room” community for Sacramento? No, that was a last resort. But families had to be fed, kids had to go to school, land and equipment payments had to be made. One of the men takes a stub of a pencil and a grungy slip of paper out of his pock-et. He looks around the table. Licking the tip of the pencil, he addresses each of his neighbors, “How many trees, other than pears, do you have? And what are they?” He scribbles numbers and fruit names on his list. It soon becomes evident there are more apple trees than any other fruit (with the exception of the dying pears). There are peaches, cher-ries, plums, nectarines, some apricots, and lots of berries. “Well, why don’t we sell our apples to folks and plant a few more? By the time they understand what great fruit we grow up here, more varieties will be ready to sell.”
Typically, farmers are not quick or risky decision-makers. But they love their land and their lifestyle. They will do just about anything to keep both of these. So,
Apple Hill® was launched. Yes, that’s how it started. And my husband and I were there. We’re still here, and we still love it. The “Hill” still has narrow wind-ing roads. But now they have lines in the middle. From the lowest location on Carson Road, the patchwork-quilt vine-yards of Boeger Winery, to the uppermost
farm on our map, Harris Tree Farm, we are still a group of farmers trying to keep the “rural” in rural living.
So, what has hap-pened to all those peach, plum and cherry trees, and all those ber-ries? Well, as you might
guess, the fruit is for sale, along with the apples. Many of our bakeries feature peach and cherry pies. And blueberries!!! The blueberries grown on the “Hill” can-not be matched anywhere. Put them into
a turnover or pie. Heaven!
In the 1800’s the area we now call Apple Hill® was a grape and wine-producing area. Boeger Winery has gone from vineyard and winery to pears, and back to vine-yard and winery in the past 150 years. Almost every farm had a small vineyard for home use. Apple Hill® now is home to seven wineries and one brewery. All are award-winning.
For a family outing, take a picnic and come see the beauty that is Apple Hill® in the springtime. Mid-March the peaches will put on their show of graceful
pink blossoms. Later in March the cher-ries and plums will greet you with their shades of white and variations of pink. Mid-April the pears will awaken with their snowball white blossoms, and in mid-to-late April the apple blossoms will greet you. The scent of the blossoms will be so intoxicating you may need to make a dinner stop in Placerville to sober up.
So those neighbors that gathered around the kitchen table those forty-some years ago were just being what farmers are the world over: practical. There were more apples than peaches or cherries or anything else, so, “Let’s sell apples.” Well, it worked out. We do have great apples. But let’s not forget the rest of it. Besides all those stone fruits and berries, there are people, our neighbors, the finest, most friendly people anywhere. And we want to meet you, all of you!
