Abigail, that Independ-ence Day ought to be sol-emnized with pomp andparade, with shows,games, sports, guns, bells,bonfires and illumina-tions from one end of thiscontinent to the otherfrom this time forward

forever more.One great thing aboutour country is that we notonly remember the manybrave men and women

who have fought to pre-serve our freedom overthe last 236 years, but weare a forward-lookingpeople, too. Americans arealways working to build a

stronger community forthe future. Even in toughtimes, one can always findan underlying optimismin the American. Pioneersdont give up. As we cele-brate our nations inde-

pendence, we should alsostrive to preserve andstrengthen the sturdy andindependent character of

American citizens.With this sense of opti-

mism, volunteers createdthe Think Auburn Firstmarketing and communi-cation program tostrengthen our communi-ty. As Auburn-area resi-

dents and business own-ers get ready to celebrateour nations independ-ence, lets also celebrateand highlight the great,independent businessesin our community. Thegutsy independent busi-ness owner creates valuefor our community. When

we create a more sustain-able local economy, cre-ate local jobs for resi-

The independent busi-ness owner is close to myheart. I grew up watching

my father work six days aweek seven days a weekduring the Thanksgivingand Christmas seasons running an independentmeat market in the Bay

Area. While I was attend-ing high school and alocal community college,I worked in my fathersmarket on weekday after-noons and Saturdaymornings, and I saw how

he created jobs, providedvalue for his customersand gave back to the com-munity through sponsor-ships of the Little Leagueand many charitableorganizations. When Ishop at an independentbusiness in Auburn, Imreminded of my daysgrowing up and myfathers small business. I

feel that Im getting goodvalue for my money andthat Im also supportingmy town. Thats whatThink Auburn First is allabout.
