Thanks to Thunderbird Charities

Release the Fear was able to provide 73 participants with alternative cognitive thinking to violence, increase coping and communication skills and expand participants’ foundation for continued learning to become more productive members of the community. Through these programs we were able to impart participants alternative coping

methods through the use of exercises which, use the creative processes of art, music and communication. Teaching the participants positive cognitive behavioral skills and teamwork to gain confidence and inner strength to face their fears and violent tendencies. The program introduced alternative ways to help re-direct the participant’s negative energies into positive and constructive engagement with their peers and adults. Using their newly learned communication skills the workshops guided participants into their own futures to choose success in their lives rather than repeat old impetuous behaviors. Our dedicated facilitators assist these youth in developing the life skills needed to address the issues they face, including peer pressure, gang involvement, bullying, abuse, and violence. Release the Fear reinforces, in a relaxed and non-judgmental fashion, the treatment interventions that the participants already receive while they are in a secure care facility. With this support we were able to exacerbate these kids ability to successfully transition into the community with positive transferable skills.

Thank you again, Sincerely, Robert J. Miley CEO/Founder Release the Fear, Inc.

"It opened up a lot of areas I thought were closed. Thank you for helping to secure my future." Devon B.

Thanks to The Thunderbirds, 16 young lives from Lower Buckeye Jail experienced their Possibilities. This workshop took place on December 11-13, 2012. Opening up possibilities for the young minds of Arizona’s youth for a brighter tomorrow.©

“Bridging Possibility” workshops. The students are divided into four groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations. The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public. Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group. These responses are written in their words without edit. The following responses are from the students who range in ages from 15 -17.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Communication. To talk to others and solve problems and express myself got what I need. To talk

questions, talk with others and pay attention in class. Talk it out with the people who you have someone.

Learned new thing about life. / To not be afraid to ask questions to others. To be able to express yourself. You

will be more helpful not afraid to ask questions. The lesson would help because you would gain insight on why

the bully does what he does. We would be able to get more answers and perceive things.

make a lot of friends and help each other. To memorize who the bully looks like and express the feelings with a

counselor, but not snitch on. To learn different ways to express myself and listen from what’s right and what’s wrong

and socialize. / Work with each build up skill. By learning when to read pic work. I will deal with bully hitting him in the

feel. When I get to the community and I try to get a career I will have communication skills. / Visualize, remember,

what comes next. Keep an imaginative mind and see more than one side to a story.

Through the Hoops: Skill from help and accepting help. Learning to receive help to get the help we need in class and school activities. Talk to the bully to talk the problem out to receive the respect that I want to be treated with. To be able to know how to ask and receive help if ever in a serious problem like bills, jobs, cars, friends, directions. / Working as a team, learning. By learn something and doing to over till you get it. By if you keep working you’re going to get use to it. / Teamwork and obstacles help to get through things in life. We could help each other make it easier with help from others. It’s harder to deal with bullying in a group and the next person can help you get out of situations. We connect with each other in order to get the best results.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Vision and self-confidence. If we visualize assignments and review it we

will succeed in our school work and etc.. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly, then work on your problems. If

building self esteem. Have confidence in school to present work. To know you’re better than that. Responsibility

and have motivation also keep life on track. / That our younger brothers and sisters look up to us. Try to do

better to show our younger brothers look at us better. It makes you think twice before listening to your friends.

Cause I saved my little sister. / My hero is my sister and dad becuz they are there for me when I need them at all times. / Kanye West. He talks to me through his music. My grandpa because he is a very strong individual.

Seeing Beyond: Touch and mind. We can visualize and interpret what the problem is. We can have a positive mind and feel the way the problems are. / How to describe objects with imagination and senses. How to help out student with schoolwork without giving answers. To help workers in your business. / We got to use our imagination and our third eye to get a mental feeling of things. Apply it maybe when we’re struggling in a reading story. But in all subjects so we can get a feeling of things that we don’t fully understand. See life in different ways. We can use imagination to use in our life goals.

Drawing one’s Fear’s, Hopes and Dreams and Sharing: The past, present and future and to improve in life. If you

get bad grades it’s in your power to work harder than before. Avoid the bully and talk to someone about. Learn from

your mistakes and do better to prosper in life. / To express ourselves in pictures or words. How to explain answers

or questions. Talk to them about the problem. Get a good job in counseling. / A sequential ordering of the things

leading up to our dreams. To set goals and remember we may struggle and may have fear but to push on. That if we

let fear and memory of this fear go we can move on to the thing we want. Knowing that your hopes, fears, and

dreams are always there but not to let them get to you. So you can push past them.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: We learned to communicate, to respect and have confidence in one another. Be

confident in yourself and tell yourself you can do better or try hard when you fail. To be confident when you think you

can’t do a job just tell yourself you can do better. / To know how to overcome our struggles. To learn even if you have

difficulties. Never give up even through your struggles. / So we can keep an open mind on thing not all thing are bad

when you first think of it. To helps in school when you realize you are not seeing things right look.

school all day. / When I went to jail but being in jail helped me change for the better. / Being in jail. Having going to the

consecution that I’m going through. Seeing my parents sad while I’m using stripes. / My friends called me to go to a party that they

were having. So I asked my mo and she said, “I have a bad feeling about that”. So I stayed home. The next day I found out that the

people at the party got caught up by the cops. / I think being incarcerated really helped me change and think about all the things I

lost and had on the outs. So being in here is a bad thing but it helps/helped me think about a better future now. / When I barely got

locked up I was sad/depressed and I thought it was the worst thing ever, but as time kept passing I realized it was for my own good.

/ When I used to go to school I thought that writing wasn’t helping now that I look at it I can accomplish rapping cuz I believe in

Charles Flanagan has said, “The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) has a longstanding and positive working relationship with Release the Fear. The youth adjudicated to us often have a range of issues to address, including delinquency, substance abuse and dependence, mental health, and trauma. Release the Fear workshops, held at ADJC several times per year, provide a safe place where the youth can be honest and open about their behavioral problems. The workshops take place over a number of days and a large number of youth have been served for several years through this program. Dedicated facilitators assist youth in developing the life skills needed to address the life issues they face, including peer pressure, gang involvement, bullying, abuse, and violence. The value of this powerful program is that it reinforces, in a relaxed and non-judgmental fashion, the treatment interventions that our youth receive while they are with us in secure care. Consequently, all interventions, including those provided by Release the Fear, add to a youth’s ability to successfully transition to the community with transferable skills. ADJC is appreciative of this program and hope that our youth continue to benefit from the workshops.”
