History then made its way to the Hilltop as President Obama delivered a speech in Gaston Hall on Georgetown’s campus on April 14, 2009.

For over three decades, John J. DeGioia has helped to define and strengthen Georgetown University as a premier institution for edu-cation and research. Since graduating from the University in 1979, he has served both as a senior administrator and as a faculty mem-ber. On July 1, 2001, he became Georgetown’s 48th president. As president, Dr. DeGioia is deeply committed to sustaining academic excellence at Georgetown. He has helped to recruit intel-lectual leaders to the faculty and secured substantial funding for scholarly research and academic programs. Under Dr. DeGioia’s leadership, the University completed in De-cember 2003 the largest fund-raising effort in University history, the Third Century Campaign. The $1 billion capital campaign benefited Georgetown’s Main, Medical, and Law Center campuses to secure endowment funds for curriculum and faculty support, increase stu-dent financial aid, and build and renovate facilities. In 2002-2003, Dr. DeGioia oversaw the largest expansion of campus facilities, with the Southwest Quadrangle - a one million square-foot complex of student housing; study, seminar and music rooms; and a new Jesuit Community Residence - at the forefront. Dr. DeGioia addresses broader issues in higher education as a Chair of the Board of Directors of Campus Compact and of the Fo-rum for the Future of Higher Education. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Indepen-dent Colleges and Universities; the Board of Directors for the Asso-ciation of Jesuit Colleges and Universities; the Executive Committee of the Council on Competitiveness; the Business-Higher Education Forum; the Steering Committee of the Talloires Network; the Big East Conference Executive Committee; and is a Commissioner on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. To prepare young people for leadership roles in the global com-munity, Dr. DeGioia has expanded opportunities for intercultural and interreligious dialogue, welcomed world leaders to campus, and convened international conferences to address challenging issues.

He represents Georgetown at the World Economic Forum and the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. DeGioia has enhanced Georgetown’s relationship with the many political, cultural, corporate, and economic resources of Washington, D.C. He serves on the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Federal City Council. Dr. DeGioia is also a strong sup-porter of Georgetown’s social justice initiatives that seek to improve opportunities for Washington’s underserved neighborhoods. Dr. DeGioia places special emphasis on sustaining and strength-ening Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit identity and its responsibil-ity to serve as a voice and an instrument for justice. He has also been a strong advocate for inter-religious dialogue. He is a member of the Order of Malta, a lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to serving the sick and the poor. Dr. DeGioia is a Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Philos-ophy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Georgetown University in 1979 and his PhD in Philosophy from the University in 1995. He has most recently taught “Interior Freedom and the Acad-emy,” “Ethics and Global Development,” “Human Rights: A Culture in Crisis,” and a seminar on “Ways of Knowing.” Prior to his appointment as president, Dr. DeGioia held a variety of senior administrative positions at Georgetown, including senior vice president, responsible for university-wide operations, and dean of student affairs. In 2004, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Academia from the Sons of Italy. And he was named a Washingtonian of the Year by The Washingtonian maga-zine in 2008. Dr. DeGioia was raised in Orange, Connecticut, and Hanford, California. He and his wife, Theresa Miller DeGioia, a Georgetown alumna, and their son, John Thomas, live in Washington, D.C.

Lee Reed was named the 17th director of athletics (Francis X. Rienzo chair) at Georgetown University in April 2010. As director of athletics, Reed oversees the operations of all Georgetown University intercollegiate athletics programs, which includes 29 sports and more than 750 student-athletes Reed came to Georgetown after serving as the director of athletics at Cleveland State University in Ohio for eight years. A former basketball standout at Cleveland State, he joined the Vikings Athletics Department in the summer of 2002. “Lee is committed to educational excellence and competitive success and I am confident that with his leadership we will continue to recruit and support first-rate coaches and student-athletes who maintain the University’s tradition of academic and athletic success,’ Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia said. Under Reed’s leadership the Cleveland State athletics program moved into the upper ranks of the Horizon League and was recognized as one of the top programs in the state of Ohio. Reed oversaw a department that captured 11 Horizon League Championships, as well as six runner-up finishes in the last three years. In addition, the Vikings were represented at the NCAA Championship 15 times during that span. Reed’s plan and vision led CSU to claim the James J. McCafferty Trophy during the 2007-08 season, an honor recognizing the Horizon League’s all-sport champion. It was the first time that CSU captured the award. CSU won the league’s Men’s All-Sports Award, while the Vikings finished third in the Women’s All-Sports Award. The Vikings, who had never finished higher than fifth place in the McCafferty standings, became just the fourth current Horizon League school to win the award. Reed is well-respected nationally, having represented the Horizon League on the NCAA Management Council and as the president of the NCAA I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association in 2007-08. He is also a member of the NCAA Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, a working group composed of presidents, chancellors, head coaches, commissioners, athletic directors and faculty athletic

representatives, which was established to develop strategies to enhance the academic performance and graduation rates of NCAA Division I men’s basketball. Reed has served as chairman of the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards committee, which is operated through NACDA. Reed also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In March of 2005, he was named one of the 50 Most Powerful African-Americans in Sports by Black Enterprise magazine. Reed rejoined the Vikings after spending the previous seven years (1995-02) at Eastern Michigan University, the last four as associate athletic director for internal affairs. As associate athletic director, Reed oversaw all internal affairs of the department, including compliance, operations and facilities. He had administrative oversight for seven Olympic sports, coordinating fund raising, budget development and the hiring and evaluation of coaches. He administered the athletic department’s $3.5 million grant-in-aid budget that covered 21 sports. A four-year letterman in men’s basketball at Cleveland State, Reed played on teams that compiled a 61-47 mark, serving as team captain for the 1982-83 season. Reed then served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of New Mexico from 1984-86. He later received a master’s degree in sports administration from UNM in 1994.

MulTI-SpORT FIElD

Multi-Sport Field has been the home of the Georgetown University women’s lacrosse team since the 2006 season. Multi-Sport Field, a FieldTurf surface, is home to football and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. Located at the center of campus, the facility currently has a seating capacity of 2,500, but upon completion will accommodate a seat-ing capacity of 4,500 (2,000 in the East stands and 2,500 in the West stands). A new multi-purpose field of FieldTurf will allow year-round practices and games for football and men’s and women’s lacrosse. Multi-Sport Field, the most significant undertaking in the history of George-town athletics, will provide a new and adequately sized gathering place for the Georgetown community, including hundreds of athletic, academic, educational and recreational opportunities throughout the years to engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, neighbors and friends. Situated at the heart of campus and adjacent to the Southwest Quad, Village C and Harbin Dorms, Multi-Sport Field will serve as a natural hub for walkway “spokes,” enabling all the amenities and spaces of the campus to be intercon-nected for use and enjoyment on a 24/7 basis. The central location guarantees audiences for future events on the Hilltop, while providing a pastoral focal point for all who look down from the dorms. The facility will be built in a phased sequence to minimize the effect on game schedules and to allow for greater integration among facility projects. The first phase, unveiled on September 17, 2005 for the Hoyas football home opener against Brown, included the construction of the artificial turf field and the imple-mentation of temporary stands and press box. The next phases will include the completion of the stands, permanent fenc-ing, a two-level press box, support spaces, locker rooms, video and conference rooms and training room, as well as a new video scoreboard.

r icky Fried is now in his eighth season at the helm of the Hoya program after serving as a

Georgetown assistant coach in 2003 and 2004. In his first seven seasons, Fried has led the Hoyas to a 84-44 overall record and a 38-5 re-cord in BIG EAST regular season games for a winning percentage of .884. Under Fried, Georgetown has earned six BIG EAST regular season titles, made four trips to the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game winning in 2010 and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times, reaching the quarterfinals twice. Fried has coached 18 national All-Americans as well as the National Goalie of the Year, two BIG EAST Attackers of the Year, two Midfielders of the Year and five Defensive Players of the Year to go along with 40 BIG EAST first or second team selections. Last season, the Hoyas won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with a confer-ence record of 7-1 and Logan McCraw and So-phia Thomas were both All-Americans as well as conference players of the year at their respec-tive positions. In 2010, Fried led the Hoyas to the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship as Georgetown went undefeated in league play. The top-seed-ed Hoyas then won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship for the first time in program his-tory. The Blue & Gray earned an

automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and had three All-America honorees including Ashby Kaestner, Molly Ford and McCraw. The George-town coaching staff also won its second-straight BIG EAST Staff of the Year award. Fried was named associate head coach for the Hoyas in November 2003 and was involved in all aspects of the Hoya program but focused on an offensive unit that became one of the most potent in the nation. On the other side of the field, in 2003, Georgetown led the nation in caused turnovers. Prior to Georgetown, Fried was an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins University for nine sea-sons. While at the school, Fried served as the recruiting coordinator and helped build Hopkins into a Division I Top 20 program after aiding in the transition from a strong D-III program. A 1988 graduate of the University of Mary-land-Baltimore County (UMBC), Fried was an All-American where he was a midfielder for the Retrievers lacrosse team. As a senior, he served as team captain, was named the team’s Most Valuable Player and earned the team’s Leader-ship Award. He was named to UMBC’s All-Time Team in 1990. Fried arrived at Hopkins following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at the Gil-man School and serving a season as an assistant at his alma mater. He also played professionally with the Philadelphia Wings from 1989-92 and 1997 and the Baltimore Thunder from 1993-94.

Fried is also active in the Intercollegiate Wom-en’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and has served as the organization’s vice presi-dent, on the board of directors, on its ethics and recruiting tournaments committees. Currently, he is on the NCAA Regional and Regional All-American Committee and is a member of the Tewaaraton Trophy Committee. After serving as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s Lacrosse Elite Team for three years, Fried was named the head coach of the national team in August of 2009. He will hold the post through the 2013 Federation of Inter-national Lacrosse World Cup to be held in Ot-towa, Canada. During the summer of 2009, Fried traveled with the US World Cup Team to Prague, Czech Republic to compete in the FIL World Cup. The U.S. squad went undefeated and brought home the gold medal. As the head coach of the national team, Fried appointed assistant coaches, identifies talented players for the squad and advises on the direction women’s lacrosse takes in the United States. He, his wife, Halyna, and their children, Jack (8) and Paige (6), reside in Columbia, Md.

Erin Hellmold is in her eighth season as an assistant coach with the Hoyas. She was named the associate head coach during the summer of 2011. Hellmold has been with the Hoyas staff after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at the Stevens Institute of Technology. During her seven seasons with the GU program, Hellmold has coached five offensive All-Americans in Alison Chambers and Coco Stanwick and most recently Ashby Kaestner, Molly Ford and Sophia Thomas. Hellmold and the Georgetown staff have been named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year for two-consecutive years. In her two seasons at Stevens, the team placed in the ECAC tournament both years after winning both the 2003 and 2004 Knickerbocker Conference Championship. The 2004 season record was the best in Stevens’ history.

Aside from coaching, Hellmold is the owner of the New York Lacrosse Academy, located on Long Island. Hellmold graduated in 2002 from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in political science, and played four seasons (1998-2002) of varsity lacrosse for the Blue Jays. She was a two-time captain, voted the best offensive player in 2001 and selected for the 2002 North/South Senior All-Star game. Additionally, Hellmold is among the Blue Jay leaders in career assists, goals and points. Hellmold currently resides in Alexandria, Va., with her husband Erich, a D.C. attorney and a 2002 graduate of Johns Hopkins where he played football for the Blue Jays. The couple has a son, Grant Michael (2).

Michi Ellers is now in her seventh season on the Georgetown coaching staff and focuses mainly on the Hoya defense. In 2006, Ellers oversaw a Georgetown defense that boasted the National Goalie of the Year in Maggie Koch while the team ranked second in the nation in scoring defense. She has coached six defensive All-Americans including Bridget Noon and Logan McCraw who were both BIG EAST Defensive Players of the Year. Ellers graduated from Georgetown in 2004 with a degree in psychology. She was a four-year starter and a key factor in the Hoyas earning four-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, including appearances in the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Championship game. Ellers also helped Georgetown continue its undefeated streak in BIG EAST Conference play en route to four-straight league titles. In addition, she helped make

school history when the 2002 Hoyas earned their first-ever Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) No. 1 national ranking as well as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A tri-captain of the 2003 & 2004 squads, Ellers is a two-time First Team All-American and BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year (2003, 2004). She earned a spot on the 24-member 2004-05 U.S. Development Team and was one of five finalists for the 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy, given annually to the top collegiate player in the nation. A 2004 All-Region First Team and NCAA All-Tournament Team member, Ellers led the country in caused turnovers for the second year in a row in 2004 with a 3.66 per game average and is Georgetown’s all-time leader in the category with a total of 204. Ellers ranks fourth in career ground balls on the Hilltop with 216. The midfielder earned a record five BIG EAST Defensive

Player of the Week honors during the 2004 season and was a unanimous selection for the All-BIG EAST First Team. She holds the top three spots in the GU record books for most caused turnovers in a single season (2001, 2003 and 2004). Ellers continued her playing career on the U.S. women’s lacrosse Elite team roster where she was on the squad for four seasons. In June of 2008, she traveled with the team to the Prague Cup where the U.S. team allowed just one goal and won the final match over England, 13-1. Additionally, during the summer of 2009, she returned to Prague for the FIL World Cup where the United States went undefeated and brought home the gold medal.

Stefanie Smith returned to the Hoya staff in 2012 after a one-year hiatus. She initially joined the Hoyas staff in 2008 as a volunteer assistant coach after spending two years as an assistant coach at Duke University as well as a third season in 2011. Smith, formerly Stefanie Sparks, graduated from Duke in May of 2005 after playing four years on both the defense and the midfield for the Blue Devils. As a senior, Smith helped lead Duke to the Final Four for the second time in school history and the first-ever ACC Tournament Championship. In her four years in Durham, including two seasons as a co-captain, Smith helped lead the Blue Devils to a 53-23 overall record and four-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament while starting every game. She earned the team’s Rookie of the Year award in 2002 in addition to earning the squad’s Workhorse Award three times. Smith also garnered the Coaches Award and was a

two-time recipient of the Leadership Award which was eventually named after her for the player who “best exeplifies the qualities of a great leader.” She holds the school record for minutes played and ranks amont the top players all-time for most consecutive starts (76), games played (76) and games started (76). Smith was a member of the 2004-05 U.S. Development team. A history and political science major at Duke, Smith earned her law degree in 2010 from the Georgetown University Law Center. She currently works as an associate for Ekstrand & Ekstrand, LLP based in Durham, N.C., and is licensed to practice law in both North Carolina and New Jersey. Smith is also an alumni interviwer for the law school. Smith and her husband, Stephen, reside in Washington, D.C.

GEORGETOWN EXpERIENCE

As i seArCHed FOr tHe

perfect school for me, I did not think it existed

until I stepped on the Hilltop. I truly believe I

found the perfect combination of academic

and athletic aspects of a college. Along with

Georgetown’s prestigious academic reputation,

I’ve learned more life lessons through my

experience as a Hoya lacrosse player.

Georgetown lacrosse strives for success during

times of challenge and controversy. I have

learned to take risks beyond my comfort zone

and have been pushed beyond limits I thought

impossible. The experiences I have endured

thus far at Georgetown will stay with me for the

rest of my life. I am truly blessed to be part of

such a close team and I am honored to be in

the presence of such talented and dedicated

teammates. I have formed bonds with friends

who I feel like I’ve known for a lifetime and

created a place I now call home.

BeiNG A stUdeNt-AtHLete At

Georgetown University has allowed me to

reach a level of potential I didn’t know I had.

Not only am I able to be a part of one of the

most prestigious universities in the country, I

am fortunate enough to be a lacrosse player as

well. Being a Hoya has required an enormous

amount of dedication that I wouldn’t trade for

anything. It demands the best from me at all

times - both in the classroom as well as on the

field. From the first day I arrived on the Hilltop,

I have been blessed with the many built-in

friendships that come with playing on a team. I

truly feel that Georgetown is where I am meant

to be and that the experiences I have had, and

will continue to have, is something I would not

have achieved anywhere else.

COMiNG tO GeOrGetOWN, i KNeW I

would be receiving a top-notch education. What

I didn’t know is that being a part of this lacrosse

program would teach me so much more than

any course I would ever take. It has prepared

me for all aspects of my life. It has pushed me

to be my greatest both on and off the field and

to set my standards higher than I could ever

imagine. Most importantly, it has given me the

opportunity to be a part of a team striving for the

same dream – to compete and win a national

championship. Every day I have been surrounded

by such a talented group of players and coaches,

gaining friendships and memories that will last a

lifetime. I am so proud to wear the blue and gray

and would not change my experience here for

anything.

MY deCisiON tO AtteNd Georgetown

University was one of the biggest

decisions I have had to make, and looking

back I can’t think of anywhere else I’d

rather be. Georgetown has provided me

with experiences, knowledge, and the

opportunities of a lifetime. Being a student-

athlete in particular has made my experience

here even more rewarding. Getting to play

a sport I love in college and compete at a

high level regularly is something I truly value.

Not only that, but the support and lessons I

learn from coaches, trainers and my fellow

teammates are endless and improve me as

a person day in and day out. These lessons

are learned not only on the field, but can

be applied in the classroom and real world

too. It is with this and the plenitude of

opportunities I am given at Georgetown that

I am so thankful for and have shaped the

person I am today and strive to be in the

future as well.

community is one that will have a great

impact on the rest of my life. I have

experiences and memories that will always

be with me. Through putting myself in new

situations and new surroundings I am able

to learn a great deal about interesting

people and the world as a whole. Being

a member of the women’s lacrosse team

also adds to my experience. The team is

like my family and I am privileged to play

with such a talented and smart group of

girls. Georgetown has provided me with a

wide mix of academic, social and cultural

leaders who often visit our beautiful campus. I

GeOrGetOWN HAs BeeN A

life-changing experience for me. I have grown

so much in the time that I have been here

both as a player and as an individual. I chose

Georgetown because the academic offerings

along with the athletic opportunity is virtually

unmatched anywhere in the country. I also fell

in love with Georgetown because I wanted

to be a part of the strong bond that this team

has. The people who are a part of the women’s

lacrosse program are not just my teammates

and coaches, but already they have become

my family. We work hard for one another and

support one another everyday on and off the

field. I have learned to put 100 percent into

everything I do and that with hard work, heart

and determination I have the ability to achieve

whatever I put my mind to. I am grateful to be a

part of such a highly competitive program and

be able to be a part of a team that is willing to

work hard and challenge themselves each and

everyday both on the field and in the classroom.

The people I have met and the bonds I have

created with my teammates is something that I

feel would not be attainable anywhere else.

sittiNG At MY JUNiOr dAY visit in January 2009, we were doing a Q&A

with some of the girls on the team. I already

felt that Georgetown was the school for

me, but when the question “why did you

choose Georgetown” arose, one of the girl’s

responses sold me. Among other things,

the last thing she said was “I want to win a

national championship.” I could sense the

competitive nature and the desire to succeed

among the team and I knew I wanted to be

a part of it. The quality of the education and

prestige of the university made my decision that

much easier. As a freshman at Georgetown, I

learned so much about myself and how hard

work, perseverance and dedication allow you

to achieve your goals. In order for a team to

succeed, it has to be more than a group of

talented individuals. From my team I have

learned that support, belief and trust in each

other are what allow us to perform at our full

potential. I thank God every day for giving me

the opportunity to be a part of the Georgetown

Lacrosse family.

tHe deMANd FOr ACAdeMiC ANd

AtHLetiC exCeLLeNCe for all student-

athletes became apparent within the first few

weeks. The high expectations of the professors

and coaches at this university constantly push

each individual to reach and even exceed our

own potentials. The opportunity to receive a

world-class education, live in one of the most

interesting cities in the world and compete for

a national championship in a sport I’ve spent

my entire life playing made Georgetown the

obvious choice when deciding where to spend

my collegiate career. Being a part of the Hoya

family doesn’t stop at being a member of a

nationally-recognized athletic team with 30

of my closest friends, but spans throughout

the entire Georgetown community in multiple

aspects of student life. I can already see that

the opportunities here are endless, and a

combination of hard work and perseverance is

the key

to success.

dUriNG tHe reCrUitiNG process, there

were several important factors guiding my final

decision. The number one factor I considered

was the academic reputation of the school. I

wanted a school that had a great academic

reputation and where I could take a challenging

but interesting course load. The second factor

I considered was the coaching staff and the

team. After considering many schools, none

had the team chemistry or coaches that

Georgetown offered. Ricky, Erin, and Michi

recruit girls who have the same values and that

is very important for chemistry on and off the

field. We all get along very well, and I’d go as

far to say better than any team I’ve ever known.

Another factor I considered was the history of

the school. I wanted to go to a school rich in

history and where the history was evident in

every day life. Georgetown definitely had that

with the secret societies, stories behind each

building, and the spirit around all the sports

teams. Georgetown was my number one choice

of schools since I was five years old after

hearing many stories from my uncle, a 1951

graduate. I am so lucky to be here right now

and I am loving every second of my experience.

WALKiNG tHrOUGH tHe GeOrGetOWN campus for the first time felt like I was coming

home to a place I had been searching for. To

have the opportunity to attend Georgetown,

one of the most prestigious learning institutions

in the world, and to play for one of the most

respected women’s lacrosse programs in the

nation has been the most rewarding experience

of my life. Being a Hoya in the classroom and

on the field means everything to me and I strive

everyday to live up to the standards that the

Georgetown community exudes in daily life on

campus. I have learned what it means to apply

all of my energies to learning, as well as what

it means to be a teammate to an exceptional

group of student-athletes who truly embrace the

enduring spirit of Georgetown. My coaches and

teammates are my family who are there for me

every step of the way. I feel blessed that I am

a Hoya and will carry with me the sense of the

Georgetown community into every aspect of my

life for the rest of my life.

BeiNG ABLe tO AtteNd GeOrGetOWN University and playing on the lacrosse team

are truly privileges. Not only am I able to attend

one of the best universities in the country, but

I am also able to be a member on a highly-

competitive team. The combination of athletics

and academics was something that I found at

no other school and feels like a perfect fit for

me. The values of not only the school, but for

our team, are something that I greatly believe in

and is a major reason why Georgetown is the

best place for me.

eriKA GABrieLseN NeUMANN ‘89 The opportunity to play lacrosse at Georgetown while simultaneously pursuing academic study at one of the leading schools in the country surpassed every life dream I had when I applied to the school. I never thought I could actually keep up and have it all – to push myself academically, athletically, socially and spiritually. But I did have it all - I was so impressed by the high goals and achievements of my peers that I pushed myself to higher standards. In many regards, Georgetown laid the groundwork for all my future goals at ever-higher standards.

KristiNrANeri NiCOLiNi ‘02 Looking back on my years on the Hilltop, I am grateful for each experience that I had there but mostly for my team- I couldn’t imagine my life without them. Both on the field and in the classroom I was always challenged to reach my limits and then at that point I often realized that they hadn’t even been reached. I wouldn’t trade my four years at Georgetown for anything.

JessiCA WALLs Beers ‘01 Georgetown University was the best experience I could have ever imagined, it had everything I wanted: a very ‘city experience’, yet a beautiful, authentic college campus. Smart challenging people and classes, with a blast of a social life. The campus was the perfect size, manageable yet still grand. Playing lacrosse and field hockey I not only experienced great competition and successes, but I also made some of the best friends I could have asked for. Being on those teams contributed largely to the person I am today. I would not trade going to GU for anything, quite frankly, I think it is the best overall university there is. Every time I am asked where I went to college, I love to see the impressed look on people’s faces, it makes me proud everyday. Having Georgetown on my resume has proven to be more golden than I ever even realized as a young student. It gets you places, plain and simple.

LAUrA FAriNA ‘83 I cannot imagine my Georgetown experience without athletics. In my freshman year, I played basketball as a walk-on and then moved from the court to the turf for three years of lacrosse. While my academic life was so rich (double ma-jored in history and government), it is my passion for athletics that still connects me to the Hill-top. Currently I serve on the Executive Board of Hoyas Unlimited and am working toward a mas-ters (MPS) in sports industry management at Georgetown while working full time as a lawyer. I feel incredibly fortunate to be tied to George-town past, present and future.

sHeeHAN stANWiCK ’01 I decided to spend four years on the Hilltop because I wanted to be challenged. The education I received at Georgetown goes far beyond the courses I took, it also includes invaluable lessons that I learned on the lacrosse field. When I was first looking at colleges, one of the things that attracted me to Georgetown was its reputation for both academics and athletics; however, equally important was the opportunity to be part of a building program. When I was a freshman at Georgetown, our team goal was to advance to the NCAA Tour-nament for the first time in the program’s his-tory. We accomplished this feat, and it was a thrilling experience! By my senior season, our team goal was to play in the National Champi-onship. Though we ultimately lost the champi-onship in sudden-death overtime, I was part of something extremely special. I was a part of a team that believed they could win, and worked incredibly hard to do so. My Georgetown education has opened so many doors in my career and personal life. The desire to be the best is something that was in-grained as a student-athlete at Georgetown, and something that lives with me today.

MArGO dOYLe ‘94 Georgetown offered everything I wanted in a college experience - a top tier lacrosse program, challenging academics, opportunities to get involved with the school through student government and a strong social life. Now, 15 years later, I am constantly reminded of how learning to balance all aspects of my college experience helped me in my professional career and personal life. I am proud to have represented Georgetown as an athlete. Through athletics, I felt that I was able to give something back to the school for all I had gained in my four years.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2011-12 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have al-ways been the same. The outstanding perfor-mances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradi-tion of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its

best athletes. The 2010-11 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship win-ners, while 22 earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut men’s basketball team won its third national championship, completing a magical run through five games of the BIG EAST Championship and six wins in the NCAA tourna-ment. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The Notre Dame wom-en’s soccer team won its third NCAA title, while BIG EAST teams reached national championship games in women’s basketball (Notre Dame) and men’s soccer (Louisville). The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the second time in the last three years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Indianapolis, capping a season in which the Huskies extended their NCAA-record win-ning streak to 90 games. Individually, BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships, including an unprec-edented four by Villanova’s Sheila Reid. Reid was the 2010 individual cross country champion, a member of the Wildcats’ winning indoor dis-tance medley relay team and won the 5,000- and 1,500-meter titles in outdoor track & field. Lou-isville’s Matt Hughes, meanwhile, repeated as the NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeple-

chase at the NCAA outdoor meet. Moore and Reid joined Notre Dame soccer standout Melissa Henderson as winners of Hon-da Sports Awards as the top performers in their respective sports. Moore also became the first three-time winner of the Wade Trophy as the na-tion’s top women’s basketball player and joined Villanova lacrosse player Brian Karalunas as win-ners of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group.

Connecticut claimed the league’s Bowl Cham-pionship Series bid for the first time as the Huskies shared the conference title with Pitts-burgh and West Virginia. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record for the second straight year. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, includ-ing New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washing-ton, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincin-nati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. When Texas Christian University joins the conference in the 2012-13 academic year, the conference will have a footprint in 30 percent of the nation’s television households. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 31 national championships in six differ-ent sports and 133 student-athletes have won individual national titles. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same sea-son. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syra-cuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won four of

the last 13 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 12 NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns chal-lenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, George-town and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and

coaches who place a constant emphasis on aca-demic integrity. Its student athletes own signifi-cantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time em-ployee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto, who had served as senior as-sociate commissioner, moved into the Commis-sioner’s chair in 2009 and has continued to steer the conference on its path of success. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and public-ity, particularly regarding television. Those ef-forts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regu-lar sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Champi-onship in Madison Square Garden. The wom-en’s basketball championship has led all con-ferences in attendance for the past eight years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Provi-dence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.

The Athletics Compliance Office coordinates the athletics compliance efforts of Georgetown University and acts as a resource and solution center concerning NCAA regulations and compliance issues. The primary functions of the Athletics Compliance Office are to coordinate, administer, monitor and verify the accurate and timely completion of NCAA-required procedures and to assist in maintaining institutional compliance with all NCAA, Conference and University rules. In addition, the Athletics Compliance Office provides educational programming and interpretive support to ensure that all individuals involved with the athletics program fully understand the University’s compliance expectations. The following general information is provided by the Georgetown University Athletics Compliance Office for supporters and friends of Georgetown Athletics as well as prospective student-athletes who may be recruited by Georgetown University.

KeY deFiNitiONs Prospective Student-Athlete: A prospective student-athlete (“prospect”) is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade, regardless whether he or she participates in athletics. A prospective student-athlete maintains his or her identity as a prospect, even after he or she signs a National Letter of Intent or financial aid agreement, until he or she attends the first day of classes of a regular term or participates in an official team practice, whichever is earlier. Representative of Athletics Interests: A representative of the institution’s athletics interests (a.k.a. Booster) is an individual who:

• has ever made a financial contribution to the athletic department or any organization that promotes Georgetown’s athletics (e.g., HOYAS UNLIMITED).

• is a member of an organization that promotes a HOYA athletic team.• has or is involved in promoting Georgetown’s athletics program in any way.• has been otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program.• Once an individual is identified as a representative, the person retains that

identity forever.

WHO is PerMitted tO reCrUit FOr GeOrGetOWN?Only Georgetown University coaches who have successfully completed the NCAA Recruiting Rules Examination on an annual basis may be involved in the recruitment process. Boosters may not make any recruiting contacts. This includes letters, telephone calls or face-to-face contact on or off campus with a prospect or the prospect’s parents.

Representatives of Georgetown’s Athletics Interest MAY:• Offer summer employment to prospective student-athletes who have signed a

National Letter of Intent and to enrolled student-athletes, after contacting the Athletics Compliance Office.

• Support Georgetown’s athletics program by attending HOYA athletics contests and by making financial contributions to Georgetown athletics.

Representatives of Georgetown’s Athletics Interest MAY NOT:• Be involved in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes

in any way.• Provide extra benefits (i.e., discounts, gifts, transportation) to prospective

HOYACROSSE CluB The Hoya Crosse Club is an organization of alumnae, parents, and friends of Georgetown Women’s Lacrosse whose primary purpose is to promote a heightened awareness of and an active interest in the Georgetown University women’s lacrosse program.
