Don’t get all crazy and stuff thinking that because there’s small print on this ad we can’t legally say Coke Zero tastes like Coke. We can. And it does. And it surprises us that such disbelief can permeate among college sports fans. Because it doesn’t matter if it’s lacrosse or hockey or that sport that looks like hockey but they play it on grass, college sports is where you’ll see teams make comebacks against insurmountable odds. That’s because when it comes down to two teams putting it all on the line for their school pride, anything is possible. Including a drink that tastes like Coke and has zero calories. I mean, look, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see why they made it the official fan refreshment of the 2010 NCAA® Championships.

Coke Zero is the official fan refreshment of the

JuLiE (MiLES) huNTER“The decision to attend Georgetown University taught me a lot about myself. I matured and grew as a person and as a basketball player during my four years on campus. The respect and prestige associated with having played at such a highly respected university has continued to open doors for me both personally and professionally. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the friendships that I made both on and off the court have proved to be the most rewarding and valuable experiences that have remained with me since my departure from the Hilltop!” PEGGi JEWELL

“I’ve spent the last 16 years in the fast-paced world of fashion, most recently as the former Vice President of Merchandising for Lucky Brand Jeans. I’m now using that experience in my new role as a mother and a retail industry expert, helping apparel companies grow their business successfully. I’m currently living in Malibu, Calif., with my husband, Greg, and two-year-old old son, Lincoln.

I am reminded every day of my Georgetown basketball experience. It has helped me professionally in so many ways. The real reminder, however, is when I am lucky enough to have a daily phone call or email with some of my best friends & confidants.....my former teammates.”

cOLLEEN hANRAhAN“In my professional life, I routinely draw upon my experience at Georgetown University as a scholar-athlete. The experience and opportunities afforded to me as a student-athlete were both significant and varied. Indeed, there is a direct correlation between the skills I honed at Georgetown and my legal successes. Being a part of the women’s basketball team allowed me to better understand and appreciate such things as the importance of team work, the art of compromise, and the ability to perform at the highest level under any set of conditions. More importantly, the emphasis that Georgetown’s women’s basketball places upon balance is a lesson that I draw upon everyday. Success for a Georgetown Student-Athlete is not defined simply in terms of athletic accomplishments but rather by one’s ability to work hard and succeed in all facets of life including academia, personal relationships, and athletics. As a young attorney, I discovered that to be successful, the same balance must be achieved.”

MARiA dEViTA“Participating in intercollegiate athletics, especially basketball, was a wonderful experience. It showed me the value of hard work, the importance of teamwork and how to handle disappointments and success. It helped me prioritize my goals and focus on the tasks at hand. In essence, it helped me sort out what’s important and showed me tools that I could use within myself to succeed.”

LiBBY (hESKiN) KuRRY“I came to Washington in the fall of 1968 to attend Georgetown. I realize now that I have spent 40 years inside the beltway, with an occasional summer at the Jersey shore. I “retired” from accounting the day I went into labor with my oldest child. I have three children who all played sports in high school and some in college, Mary Kurry McCormick, Delia and Jed. My brother, Neil Heskin SBA’67, attended Georgetown on a basketball scholarship, we are the only brother and sister to play basketball for Georgetown.”

REBEKKAh BRuNSONRebekkah Brunson helped lead the Sacramento Monarchs to a 62-59 victory over the Connecticut Sun to claim the 2005 WNBA Championship. Brunson turned in a solid performance for Sacramento with 12 points, and six rebounds in the championship game. This past season, she again was strong off the bench for the Monarchs as they advanced to the finals for the second consecutive season.

The only Georgetown women’s basketball player to ever earn AP All-America honors, Brunson was chosen 10th overall by the Sacramento Monarchs in the 2004 WNBA draft. She was the first Hoya ever to be drafted in the first round and just the second Georgetown player to be drafted by a WNBA team. She was a two-time All-BIG EAST First-Team selection and was honored as the league’s 2004 Defensive Player of the Year and the 2001 Rookie of the Year.

As a senior, Brunson became the first player in BIG EAST history to lead the league in scoring (20.4 ppg) and rebounding (11.3 rpg). She owns all of Georgetown’s rebounding records – career rebounds (1,093), season rebounds (336) and single game rebounds (22) and ranks second on the career scoring list (1,762).

NiKi REid GEcKELERNiki Reid Geckeler left the Hilltop after more than ten years as a player, academic advisor and assistant coach. She accepted the head coaching position at Howard University in 2008. As a player, Reid Geckeler was an outstanding guard who ranked on GU’s all-time list in assists and three-point percentage. She was a tri-captain for the 1992-93 squad that won the BIG EAST Championship and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Reid Geckeler graduated in 1993 with a degree in psychology and returned to the Hilltop from 1996-2002 as an assistant coach, academic advisor and recruiting coordinator. She served as the interim head coach at Fordham University for two seasons before coming back to GU from 2004-08 as an assistant under Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy.

dAYNiA LA-FORcE MANNDaynia La-Force Mann is beginning her third year as the head women’s basketball coach at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. La-Force Mann was standout-player for the Hoyas from 1991-95. She was a member of the 1992-93 squad that won the BIG EAST Championship and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Current Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy was an assistant coach with that team. After graduating with her degree in psychology, La-Force Mann had stints as an assistant at Long Island University and rival-BIG EAST institution, St. John’s, before taking over as head coach at the University of New Haven. In 2006, she was hired as the head coach for the Huskies and turned the program into a contender in the CAA.

hOYA BLuEHoya Blue is Georgetown’s student-run Spirit Club charged with promoting all Georgetown sports and creating an exciting atmosphere at games. Hoya Blue hosts pre-game events, leads cheers in the student section, plans and organizes road trips and throws victory parties. Every member of Hoya Blue wears t-shirts to the game that cry “I BLEED HOYA BLUE” and members chant the official cry “HOYA SAXA,” which is Latin for “What Rocks.”

WhO iS JAcK?Georgetown’s mascot is Jack the Bulldog. The name “Jack” and the breed of English Bulldog was formally adopted in 1962, after a long line of breeds “auditioned” for the position during the first half of the century. Georgetown was one of the first schools to employ a “human mascot.” A familiar blue and gray costumed student appears at all major athletic and social events and is one of the most recognizable college mascots in the nation.

SchOOL cOLORSBlue and gray were adopted as the official school colors in 1866 following the Civil War, to symbolize the reunification of the North and the South. The war had such a profound impact upon the University, which housed the Union Army as it moved south to occupy the surrounding area.

WhAT iS A hOYA?The Georgetown mascot, the Hoya, is derived from the Greek and Latin phrase “Hoya Saxa,” which, loosely translated, means “What Rocks!” Some say it originated in a cheer referring to the stones that comprised the school’s outer walls; others say it began in the 19th century with the birth of Georgetown’s Stonewalls baseball club; a third version has a “hoya saxa” cheer arising after an impressive goal-line stand by the defense of the Hoya football team. The name proved popular and the term “Hoyas” was eventually adopted for all Georgetown teams.

The women’s basketball team practices and plays all home contests at McDonough.

McDonough is a frequent gathering place for alumni, parents and fans to share their common Georgetown spirit prior to and following their favorite Hoya athletic event. The 2010-11 academic year will be the 32nd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2010-11 year will mark the conference’s sixth straight with the same 16-member group, the nation’s largest Division I-A conference.

The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes.

The 2009-10 year was no different.

Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Award as the nation’s top female student-athlete. She also was named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year for women’s basketball. Moore was the fifth BIG EAST women’s student-athlete to win the Honda-Broderick Award.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut women’s basketball team won its second straight national championship and its seventh overall crown. The Villanova women’s cross country team also won the NCAA title. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team reached the NCAA College Cup for the second straight year. The Syracuse women’s lacrosse squad reached the Final Four.

On the men’s side, West Virginia’s basketball team became the BIG EAST’s 16th team to reach the NCAA Final Four and won the conference’s academic achievement award. The Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA championship game.

Individually, three BIG EAST student-athletes won NCAA titles. Cincinnati’s Josh Schneider won the 50 freestyle in men’s swimming. In track, Louisville’s D’Ana McCarty repeated as the NCAA indoor winner in the weight throw. Louisville’s Matt Hughes won the 3,000 steeplechase. Another Cardinal, Austen Childs, was the national runner-up in men’s tennis singles.

BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Cincinnati won its second straight league championship in 2009 and compiled an undefeated regular season. The Bearcats finished third in the final Bowl Championship Series standings. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record. Rutgers, one of the bowl winners, also was recognized for having the nation’s highest NCAA APR rating, which measures academic success.

The BIG EAST has continued to produce student-athletes who are at the forefront of athletic and academic achievement. In 2009-10, 22 BIG EAST players from 10 schools were chosen to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams. Over 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors.

The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York,

Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S.Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 28 national championships in six different sports and 128 student-athletes have won individual national titles.

In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 12 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 11 NCAA titles.

Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. In 2009-10, the BIG EAST added men’s lacrosse to its growing list of sports, which increased its total to 24 sport championships.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance.

While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics.

Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference.

In 2009-10, the BIG EAST had one significant change. Tranghese stepped down from his position on June 30, 2009. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair and continued to steer the conference on its path of success.

The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity,

particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past seven years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball.

More than 575 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals.

The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.

FOR OVER ThREE dEcAdES, John J. DeGioia has helped to define and strengthen Georgetown University as a premier institution for education and research. Since graduat-ing from the University in 1979, he has served both as a senior administrator and as a faculty member. On July 1, 2001, he became Georgetown’s 48th president.

As president, Dr. DeGioia is deeply committed to sustaining academic excellence at Georgetown. He has helped to recruit intellectual leaders to the faculty and secured substantial funding for scholarly research and academic programs.

Under Dr. DeGioia’s leadership, the University completed in December 2003 the largest fund-raising effort in University history, the Third Century Campaign. The $1 billion capital campaign benefited Georgetown’s Main, Medical, and Law Center campuses to secure endowment funds for curriculum and faculty support, increase student financial aid, and build and renovate facilities. In 2002-2003, Dr. DeGioia oversaw the largest expansion of

campus facilities, with the Southwest Quadrangle - a one million square-foot complex of student housing; study, seminar and music rooms; and a new Jesuit Community Residence - at the forefront.

Dr. DeGioia addresses broader issues in higher education as a Chair of the Board of Directors of Campus Compact and of the Forum for the Future of Higher Education. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; the Board of Directors for the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities; the Executive Committee of the Council on Competitiveness; the Business-Higher Education Forum; the Steering Committee of the Talloires Network; the Big East Conference Executive Committee; and is a Commissioner on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.

Dr. DeGioia has enhanced Georgetown’s relationship with the many political, cultural, corporate, and economic resources of Washington, D.C. He serves on the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Federal City Council. Dr. DeGioia is also a strong supporter of Georgetown’s social justice initiatives that seek to improve opportunities for Washington’s underserved neighborhoods.

As the first lay president of a Jesuit university, Dr. DeGioia places special emphasis on sustaining and strengthening Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit identity and its responsibility to serve as a voice and an instrument for justice. He has also been a strong advocate for inter-religious dialogue. He is a member of the Order of Malta, a lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to serving the sick and the poor.

Dr. DeGioia is a Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Georgetown University in 1979 and his PhD in Philosophy from the University in 1995. As senior vice president for strategic development, he leads university initiatives in government relations, social impact strategy, communications, branding, and new project development. In 2010-11, he is leading a strategic planning process to enhance the scope and impact of the University’s Center for Social Justice.

An English professor who teaches literature courses dealing with human rights, education and social justice, he is the recipient of the 2003 Dorothy M. Brown Award for outstanding service to students, the 2008 Edward B. Bunn, S.J. Award for Faculty Excellence in Georgetown College, and the 2010 Faculty of the Year Award from the Edmund A. LEE REEd WAS NAMEd ThE 17Th diREcTOR OF AThLETicS (Francis X. Rienzo chair) at Georgetown University in April 2010. As director of athletics, Reed will oversee the op-erations of all Georgetown University intercollegiate athletics programs, which includes 29 sports and more than 750 student-athletes Reed takes over for Daniel R. Porterfield, Ph.D., Georgetown’s senior vice-president for strategic development who served as interim director of athletics during the 2009-10 academic year.

Reed comes to Georgetown after serving as the director of athletics at Cleveland State University in Ohio for eight years. A former basketball standout at Cleveland State, he joined the Vikings Athletics Department in the summer of 2002. “Lee is committed to educational

excellence and competitive success and I am confident that with his leadership we will continue to recruit and support first-rate coaches and student-athletes who maintain the University’s tradition of academic and athletic success,’ Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia said. “This has been a thorough search process and we look forward to the contributions he will make to our athletics program and the lives of our student-athletes.”

Under Reed’s leadership the Viking athletics program moved into the upper ranks of the Horizon League and was recognized as one of the top programs in the state of Ohio. Reed oversaw a department that captured 11 Horizon League Championships, as well as six runner-up finishes in the last three years. In addition, Cleveland State University has been represented at the NCAA Championship 15 times during that span. Reed’s plan and vision led the Vikings to claim the James J. McCafferty Trophy during the 2007-08 season, an honor recognizing the Horizon League’s all-sport champion. It was the first time that CSU captured the award. CSU won the league’s Men’s All-Sports Award, while the Vikings finished third in the Women’s All-Sports Award. The Vikings, who had never finished higher than fifth place in the McCafferty standings, became just the fourth current Horizon League school to win the award.

Reed is well-respected nationally, having represented the Horizon League on the NCAA Management Council and as the president of the NCAA I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association in 2007-08. He is also a member of the NCAA Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, a working group composed of presidents, chancellors, head coaches, commissioners, athletic

directors and faculty athletic representatives, which was established to develop strategies to enhance the academic performance and graduation rates of NCAA Division I men’s basketball.

Reed has served as chairman of the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards committee, which is operated through NACDA, Reed also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In March of 2005, he was named one of the 50 Most Powerful African-Americans in Sports by Black Enterprise magazine.

Reed rejoined the Vikings after spending the previous seven years (1995-02) at Eastern Michigan University, the last four as associate athletic director for internal affairs. As associate athletic director, Reed oversaw all internal affairs of the department, including compliance, operations and facilities. He had administrative oversight for seven Olympic sports, coordinating fund raising, budget development and the hiring and evaluation of coaches. He administered the athletic department’s $3.5 million grant-in-aid budget that covered 21 sports.

A four-year letterman in men’s basketball at Cleveland State, Reed played on teams that compiled a 61-47 mark, serving as team captain for the 1982-83 season. Reed then served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of New Mexico from 1984-86. He later received a master’s degree in sports administration from UNM in 1994.

TERRi WiLLiAMS-FLOuRNOY iS NOW iN hER SEVENTh SEASON at the helm of the Georgetown women’s basketball team. In recent years, Williams-Flournoy has ushered the Hoyas into two of the most successful seasons in program history.

Last season, she led the squad to a 26-7 overall record with a 13-3 mark in BIG EAST play along with a 13-0 record at McDonough Arena. Georgetown posted a 16-game win streak at one point in the season and finished tied for second in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas spent 12 weeks in the national rankings and earned the program’s second bid to the NCAA Tournament. Fifth-seeded Georgetown defeated Marist in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but fell to fourth-seeded Baylor University in the second round. The Bears eventually advanced to the NCAA Final Four.

The Blue & Gray led the nation in turnover margin (+8.12) with a fast-paced tempo and also ranked third in steals per game (12.9). Georgetown was also 11th in the country with a 15-game home win streak dating back to 2008-09. Individual honors followed with two players earning All-BIG EAST, a BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-America award. Williams-Flournoy took over the program on Aug. 27, 2004, becoming just the sixth women’s basketball head coach in Georgetown history. Additionally, she signed a five-year contract extension in June, 2010. Returning to GU was a homecoming for Williams-Flournoy as she began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach with the Hoyas in 1992.
