for over three decades, John J. DeGioia has helped to define and strengthen Georgetown University as a premier institution for education and research. Since graduating from the University in 1979, he has served both as a senior administrator and as a faculty member. On July 1, 2001, he became Georgetown’s 48th president. As president, Dr. DeGioia is deeply committed to sustaining academic excellence at Georgetown. He has helped to recruit intellectual leaders to the faculty and secured substantial funding for scholarly research and academic programs. Under Dr. DeGioia’s leadership, the University completed in December 2003 the largest fund-raising effort in University history, the Third Century Campaign. The $1 billion capital campaign benefited Georgetown’s Main, Medical, and Law Center campuses to secure endowment funds for curriculum and faculty support, increase student financial aid, and build and renovate facilities. In 2002-2003, Dr. DeGioia oversaw the largest expansion of campus facilities, with the Southwest Quadrangle - a one million square-foot complex of student housing; study, seminar and music rooms; and a new Jesuit Community Residence - at the forefront. Dr. DeGioia addresses broader issues in higher education as a Chair of the Board of Directors of Campus Compact and of the Forum for the Future of Higher Education. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; the Board of Directors for the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities; the Executive Committee of the Council on Competitiveness; the Business-Higher Education Forum; the Steering Committee of the Talloires Network; the Big East Conference Executive Committee; and is a Commissioner on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. To prepare young people for leadership roles in the global community, Dr. DeGioia has expanded opportunities for intercultural and interreligious dialogue, welcomed world leaders to campus, and convened international conferences to address challenging issues. He represents Georgetown at the World Economic Forum, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, where he recently served as Chair of the Education Committee. Dr. DeGioia has enhanced Georgetown’s relationship with the many political, cultural, corporate, and economic resources of Washington, D.C. He serves on the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Federal City Council. Dr. DeGioia is also a strong supporter of Georgetown’s social justice initiatives that seek to improve opportunities for Washington’s underserved neighborhoods. As the first lay president of a Jesuit university, Dr. DeGioia places special emphasis on sustaining and strengthening Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit identity and its responsibility to serve as a voice and an instrument for justice. He has also been a strong advocate for inter-religious dialogue. He is a member of the Order of Malta, a lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to serving the sick and the poor. Dr. DeGioia is a Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Georgetown University in 1979 and his PhD in Philosophy from the University in 1995. He has most recently taught “Ethics and Global Development,” “Human Rights: A Culture in Crisis,” and a seminar on “Ways of Knowing.” Prior to his appointment as president, Dr. DeGioia held a variety of senior administrative positions at Georgetown, including senior vice president, responsible for university-wide operations, and dean of student affairs. In 2004, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Academia from the Sons of Italy. And he was named a Washingtonian of the Year by The Washingtonian magazine in 2008. Dr. DeGioia was raised in Orange, Connecticut, and Hanford, California. He and his wife, Theresa Miller DeGioia, a Georgetown alumna, and their son, John Thomas, live in Washington, D.C.

lee Reed was named the 17th director of athletics (Francis X. Rienzo chair) at Georgetown University in April 2010. As director of athletics, Reed will oversee the operations of all Georgetown University intercollegiate athletics programs, which includes 29 sports and more than 750 student-athletes Reed takes over for Daniel R. Porterfield, Ph.D., Georgetown’s senior vice-president for strategic development who served as interim director of athletics during the 2009-10 academic year. Reed comes to Georgetown after serving as the director of athletics at Cleveland State University in Ohio for eight years. A former basketball standout at Cleveland State, he joined the Vikings Athletics Department in the summer of 2002. “Lee is committed to educational excellence and competitive success and I am confident that with his leadership we will continue to recruit and support first-rate coaches and student-athletes who maintain the University’s tradition of academic and athletic success,’ Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia said. “This has been a thorough search process and we look forward to the contributions he will make to our athletics program and the lives of our student-athletes.” Under Reed’s leadership the Viking athletics program moved into the upper ranks of the Horizon League and was recognized as one of the top programs in the state of Ohio. Reed oversaw a department that captured 11 Horizon League Championships, as well as six runner-up finishes in the last three years. In addition, Cleveland State University has been represented at the NCAA Championship 15 times during that span. Reed’s plan and vision led the Vikings to claim the James J. McCafferty Trophy during the 2007-08 season, an honor recognizing the Horizon League’s all-sport champion. It was the first time that CSU captured the award. CSU won the league’s Men’s All-Sports Award, while the Vikings finished third in the Women’s All-Sports Award. The Vikings, who had never finished higher than fifth place in the McCafferty standings, became just the fourth current Horizon League school to win the award. Reed is well-respected nationally, having represented the Horizon League on the NCAA Management Council and as the president of the NCAA I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association in 2007-08. He is also a member of the NCAA Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, a working group composed of presidents, chancellors, head coaches, commissioners, athletic directors and faculty athletic representatives, which was established to develop strategies to enhance the academic performance and graduation rates of NCAA Division I men’s basketball. Reed has served as chairman of the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards committee, which is operated through NACDA, Reed also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In March of 2005, he was named one of the 50 Most Powerful African-Americans in Sports by Black Enterprise magazine. Reed rejoined the Vikings after spending the previous seven years (1995-02) at Eastern Michigan University, the last four as associate athletic director for internal affairs. As associate athletic director, Reed oversaw all internal affairs of the department, including compliance, operations and facilities. He had administrative oversight for seven Olympic sports, coordinating fund raising, budget development and the hiring and evaluation of coaches. He administered the athletic department’s $3.5 million grant-in-aid budget that covered 21 sports. A four-year letterman in men’s basketball at Cleveland State, Reed played on teams that compiled a 61-47 mark, serving as team captain for the 1982-83 season. Reed then served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of New Mexico from 1984-86. He later received a master’s degree in sports administration from UNM in 1994.

GUHoYas.CoMGUHoyas.com, the official website for Georgetown Athletics including the Georgetown women’s lacrosse program, is in its sixth season powered by CBSSports.com College Network, the leader in the production, management and hosting of official athletic websites for colleges and universities across the United States. CBSSports.com College Network currently produces a network of approximately 175 official athletic sites for schools including Georgetown University.

Visitors can watch the latest videos on Georgetown’s 29 teams, learn about their favorite Hoyas, read the latest news on the Hilltop and check the upcoming schedule. After each contest, check back with GUHoyas.com for postgame releases, statistics, photo galleries, and other features. All your favorite Hoya gear can also be purchased through GUHoyas.com by visiting the online store.

CBSSports.com College Network is a unit of CBS Interactive, a leading online content network for information and entertainment. With more than 200 million people visiting its properties each month, CBS Interactive is the eighth-largest Web property globally. Its portfolio of leading brands, which include CNET, CBS.com, CBSSports.com, GameSpot, TV.com, BNET, CBS RADIO and Last.fm, span popular categories like technology, entertainment, sports, news and business.

The Georgetown University women’s lacrosse team will play at the Multi-Sport Field for the sixth-straight season. Multi-Sport Field, a FieldTurf surface, is home to football and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. Located at the center of campus, the facility currently has a seating capacity of 2,500, but upon completion will accommodate a seating capacity of 4,500 (2,000 in the East stands and 2,500 in the West stands). A new multi-purpose field of FieldTurf will allow year-round practices and games for football and men’s and women’s lacrosse. Multi-Sport Field, the most significant undertaking in the history of Georgetown athletics, will provide a new and adequately sized gathering place for the Georgetown community, including hundreds of athletic, academic, educational and recreational opportunities throughout the years to engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, neighbors and friends. Situated at the heart of campus and adjacent to the Southwest Quad, Village C and Harbin Dorms, Multi-Sport Field will serve as a natural hub for walkway “spokes,” enabling all the amenities and spaces of the campus to be interconnected for use and enjoyment on a 24/7 basis. The central location guarantees audiences for future events on the Hilltop, while providing a pastoral focal point for all who look down from the dorms. The facility will be built in a phased sequence to minimize the effect on game schedules and to allow for greater integration among facility projects. The first phase, unveiled on September 17, 2005 for the Hoyas football home opener against Brown, included the construction of the artificial turf field and the implementation of temporary stands and press box. The next phases will include the completion of the stands, permanent fencing, a two-level press box, support spaces, locker rooms, video and conference rooms and training room, as well as a new video scoreboard.

Ricky Fried is now in his seventh season at the helm of the Hoya program after serving as a Georgetown assistant

coach in 2003 and 2004. In his first six seasons, Fried has led the Hoyas to a 75-36 overall record and a 31-4 record in BIG EAST regular season games. Under Fried, Georgetown has earned five BIG EAST regular season titles, made four trips to the BIG EAST Tournament Cham-pionship Game winning in 2010 and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times, reaching the quarterfinals twice. Fried has coached 16 national All-Amer-icans as well as the National Goalie of the Year, two BIG EAST Attackers, one Midfielder of the Year and four Defensive Players of the Year to go along with 34 BIG EAST first or second team selections. Last season, Fried led the Hoyas to the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship as GU went undefeated in league play. The top-seeded Hoyas then won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship for the first time in program history. The Blue & Gray earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and had three All-America honorees including Ashby Kaestner, Molly Ford and Logan Mc-Craw. The Georgetown coaching staff also won its second-straight BIG EAST Staff of the Year award. Fried was named Associate Head Coach for the Hoyas in November 2003 and was involved in all aspects of the Hoya program but focused on an offensive unit that became one of the most potent in the nation. On the other side of the field, in 2003, Georgetown led the nation caused turnovers. Prior to Georgetown, Fried was an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins University for nine seasons. While at the school, Fried served as the recruiting coordinator and helped build Hopkins into a Division I Top 20 program. A 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), Fried was an All-American where he was a midfielder for the Retrievers lacrosse team. As a senior, he served as team captain, was named the team’s Most Valuable Player and earned the team’s Leadership Award. He was named to UMBC’s All-Time Team in 1990. Fried arrived at Hopkins following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at the Gilman School. He also played professionally with the Philadelphia Wings from 1989-92 and the

Baltimore Thunder from 1993-94 and 1997. Fried is also active in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and has served as the organization’s vice president and on the board of directors. He sits on its ethics and recruiting tournaments committees. Additionally, he is on the Regional All-American Committee and is a member of the Tewaaraton Trophy Committee. After serving as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s Lacrosse Elite Team for four years, Fried was named the head coach of the national team in August of 2009. He will hold the post for the next three years leading up to

the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup. During the summer of 2009, Fried traveled with the US World Cup Team to Prague, Czech Republic to compete in the FIL World Cup. The U.S. squad went undefeated and brought home the gold medal. As the head coach of the national team, Fried advises on the direction women’s la-crosse takes in the United States over the next four years. He and the appointed assistants identify talented players for the squad. He, his wife, Halyna, and their children, Jack (7) and Paige (5), reside in Columbia, Md.

MICHI elleRs is now in her sixth season on the Georgetown coaching staff and focuses mainly on the Hoya defense. In 2006, Ellers oversaw a Georgetown defense that boasted the National Goalie of the Year in Mag-gie Koch while the team ranked second in the nation in scoring defense. She has coached five defensive All-Americans including Bridget Noon who was the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and, most recently, Logan McCraw. Ellers graduated from Georgetown in 2004 with a degree in psychology. She was a four-year starter and a key factor in the Hoyas earning four-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, including appear-ances in the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Championship game.

Ellers also helped Georgetown continue its undefeated streak in BIG EAST Conference play en route to four-straight league titles. In addition, she helped make school history when the 2002 Hoyas earned their first-ever Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) No. 1 national ranking as well as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A tri-captain of the 2003 & 2004 squads, Ellers is a two-time First Team All-American and BIG EAST Defen-sive Player of the Year (2003, 2004). She earned a spot on the 24-member 2004-05 U.S. Development Team and was one of five finalists for the 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy, given annually to the top collegiate player in the nation. A 2004 All-Region First Team and NCAA All-Tournament Team member, Ellers led the country in caused turn-overs for the second year in a row in 2004 with a 3.66 per game average and is Georgetown’s all-time leader in the category with a total of 204. Ellers ranks fourth in career ground balls on the Hilltop with 216. The midfielder earned a record five BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors during the 2004 season and was a unanimous selection for the All-BIG EAST First Team. She holds the top three spots in the GU record books for most caused turnovers in a

single season (2001, 2003 and 2004). Ellers is one of 24 players on the U.S. women’s lacrosse Elite team roster, she has been on the squad for the past four seasons. In June of 2008, she traveled with the team to the Prague Cup where the U.S. team allowed just one goal and won the final match over England, 13-1. Additionally, during the summer of 2009, she returned to Prague for the FIL World Cup where the United States went undefeated and brought home the gold medal.

BALANCED IS THE oNLY wAY to describe the 2011 Georgetown University women’s lacrosse team. Coming off of a BIG EAST Regular Season Championship, the program’s first BIG EAST Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, the Hoyas will look to achieve balance in every aspect of the game in order to go even further in 2011. “We’re taking a balanced approach to the season,” said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. “We believe we can match our opponents strengths and take advantage of weaknesses because we are strong at so many positions.” Georgetown returns an experienced group of seniors and a talented junior class. A number of sophomores saw minutes last season and the freshmen arrive on the Hilltop as the top-ranked recruiting class in the nation. The attack will feature three senior starters that know the system and the coaching staff’s expectations. “We have an intelligent group on attack, they know how we want to play and value possession,” said Fried. Leading the way is senior captain Jordy Kirr who starts her final year on the Hilltop as a member of the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. Kirr is a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree and has been named a Regional All-American twice in her career. The attacker was GU’s third-leading scorer last season with 30 goals and 17 assists for 47 points. She is among the program’s top assist leaders of all time. Joining Kirr in the starting lineup will be classmates Jacqueline Giles and Kathleen Dwyer along with sophomore Dina Jackson. Giles is a two-year starter who was Georgetown’s fourth-leading scorer a season ago with 26 goals and five assists for 31 points. Dwyer has worked her way into a starting role after appearing in all 19 games last season tallying eight goals and two assists. Jackson is the lone underclassmen who had an outstanding rookie campaign with 12 goals and two assists in 15 appearances. A number of players will compete to fill reserve positions on attack. Senior Mary Wittelsberger will see time as well as sophomore Evan O’Neill who improved over the summer to push for minutes. Junior transfer Molly Early, coming to the Hilltop from the University of Richmond, is a tall, strong attacker that should add depth to the group. A pair of freshmen will also vie for time in the lineup. Jody Cumberpatch and Reilly

Woodman come in as a part of a talented group that may sneak into the rotation. The coaching staff has a wealth of talent and speed in the midfield with two interchangeable lines. The staff anticipates alternating the starting line to show teams a different look and because each brings something different to the field. “Our lines our basically interchangeable and we want to play fast,” said Fried. “One difference this season is that we’ll be scoring out of the midfield much more than in past years.” One line will pair an experienced senior with two explosive freshmen. Senior captain Mary Beth Brophy returns after starting every game last year and posting 12 goals with two assists. She will be joined by freshmen Hannah Franklin and Kelyn Freedman. Both attackers were highly-touted recruits coming out of high school. Freedman was the No. 1 recruit in the nation and Franklin ranked No. 19 overall in her class. The second line boasts experience with junior Erin Lovett joining sophomore Kelsi Bozel and Sophia Thomas. Lovett was GU’s fifth-leading scorer a year ago with 13 goals and nine assists. Bozel and Thomas both saw action as freshmen. Bozel had 13 goals and four assists, while Thomas managed 18 goals and two assists as well as winning the Hoyas’ Rookie of the Year award. Filling in to either of the first two lines will be junior Danielle Van Fossan and sophomore Rosie Corcoran. Van Fossan went from a draw control specialist to more of an all-around player last year. Corcoran saw action in eight games gaining experience and learning the Georgetown system. The freshmen trio of Maggie Brown, Courtney Caputo and Meghan Farrell will make up the incredibly deep and solid midfield. The defense is experienced and will look to defend as well as get the ball out in transition. The starting line lost just one player from last season and will be tough to score on. “This group is the best combination of experience and athleticism that we’ve had,” said Fried. “Three of the defenders started as midfielders so that brings a more dynamic element to the line.” Senior captain Logan McCraw will lead the way after a breakout season in 2010. McCraw was an All-America honoree and a First Team All-BIG EAST selection. She had 40 ground balls and 32 caused

turnovers. Fellow captain and junior Kelly Barnes was an All-BIG EAST honoree and a Regional All-American after moving from the midfield last year. She had five goals and one assist as well as 28 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers. Both McCraw and Barnes begin the season on the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. Rounding out the starting line are junior Carly Napora and sophomore Ashley Hunter. Both saw significant time last year. Napora was a one-on-one specialist and Hunter appeared in all 19 games as a sophomore. Four players will fill in on this first line all bringing different aspects of the game. Juniors Katie O’Brien and Mary Cannon know the Georgetown system and will push for minutes. Additionally, sophomore Lauren Gray and freshman MJ Coyle have the ability to make an impact on defense. With the departure of Caitlin Formby, the goalie position is up for grabs. Leading the way is senior Lauren Thomas who learned from Formby. Thomas brings an understanding of the defense and vocal leadership. Pushing Thomas will be sophomore Abby Bisbee and freshman Barb Black. Bisbee is an emotional leader that responds well to situations. Black has a field presence that teammates and opponents react to as well as remarkable confidence for a first-year player. The schedule will once again be one of the toughest in the nation with strong out-of-conference opponents lined up early on. “We schedule these games to prepare ourselves for conference play and for the NCAA Tournament,” said Fried. Georgetown opens with national runner up Northwestern and a trip to Florida. The Hoyas will host perennial-power Duke before going on the road at John’s Hopkins and North Carolina before starting conference play. With BIG EAST matchups against the likes of Syracuse, Notre Dame, Loyola (Md.), Rutgers and Louisville, the conference looks to be as strong as ever. The Hoyas will host the reigning national champion Maryland Terrapins before closing out the regular season and preparing for the conference tournament. For the second time in three year, the BIG EAST Tournament will be held on the Hilltop May 5 and 7. With a difficult schedule, balance will be important to match and go beyond the legacy of Georgetown women’s lacrosse.

AS I SEARCHED foR THE perfect school for me, I did not think it existed until I stepped on the Hilltop. I truly believe I found the perfect combination of academic and athletic aspects of a college. Along with Georgetown’s prestigious academic reputation, I’ve learned more life lessons through my experience as a Hoya lacrosse player. Georgetown lacrosse strives for success during times of challenge and controversy. I have learned to take risks beyond my comfort zone and have been pushed beyond limits I thought impossible. The experiences I have endured thus far at Georgetown will stay with me for the rest of my life. I am truly blessed to be part of such a close team and I am honored to be in the presence of such talented and dedicated teammates. Even though I have only been here for two years, I have already formed bonds with friends that I feel like I’ve know for a lifetime and created a place I now call home.

HAVING THE oPPoRTuNITY To attend such a prestigious university as well as being a part of one of the top lacrosse programs in the country is an experience that I will be forever grateful for. Every day, on and off the field, I am pushed to do my best. Playing for such a great coaching staff has really made me realize what it means to work my hardest and be truly dedicated toward achieving my goals.

The one thing I will take away most from my experience here at Georgetown is the friendships I have made with my teammates. From day one I felt at home and welcome. I can honestly say that when my four years here on the Hilltop are up, I will have made some of the greatest friends for life and that is not something everyone can state.

Lacrosse has prepared me with the life lessons I will need to succeed after college. The teammates and coaches that I have been privileged to work with since day one, have helped me develop into the person I am today and I am extremely thankful for that. The lessons I have learned and friendships I have made will stay with me for the rest of my life and I will always be proud to be a HOYA.

AT GEoRGETowN uNIVERSITY I don’t only get to be a part of a world-class academic institution, but also get to be a part of the Georgetown women’s lacrosse program. Being a member of the Georgetown women’s lacrosse program is so much more than just playing for a lacrosse team, it is a family that has opened its arms to me. The girls and coaches are so supportive and will pick me up when ever I need it. The team is willing to work hard and we push each other to be our best. As I look to my fellow teammates I can only imagine what Georgetown women’s lacrosse is going to do for me. I can see the team shaping me into a better player, but more importantly a better woman. I am so happy to be a Hoya and I look forward to the coming years on the Hilltop.

BEING A STuDENT-ATHLETE AT Georgetown University has allowed me to reach a level of potential I didn’t know I had. From the first day I arrived on the Hilltop, I have been blessed with the many built-in friendships that come with the playing on a team. I truly feel that Georgetown is where I am meant to be and that the experience I have had, and will continue to have, is something I would not have achieved anywhere else.

PEoPLE, oPPoRTuNITY, CHALLENGE, excitement … that’s why I chose Georgetown. Everyday I’m challenged to expand my knowledge and understanding of the world around me. That challenge comes from my instructors, my classmates, and my team members. Our location, in the center of one of the world’s most exciting cities, gives us access to incredible hands-on learning opportunities, the latest technology, and world leaders who often visit our beautiful campus. I like change and everyday I have new people to meet and new places to explore. When it comes to lacrosse, I am living a dream. I respect the skills and leadership of my coaches and teammates - and really like them as people! Together we work hard to get better, achieve our greatest potential, and have fun.

MY DECISIoN To JoIN THE Georgetown community is one that will have a great impact on the rest of my life. Even though I have only completed one year, I already have experiences and memories that will always be with me. Through putting myself in new situations and new surroundings I am able to learn a great deal about interesting people and the world as a whole. Being a member of the women’s lacrosse team also adds to my experience. The team is like my family and I am privileged to play with such a talented and smart group of girls. EVEN THouGH I oNLY HAVE one semester at Georgetown under my belt, the demand for academic and athletic excellence for all student-athletes became apparent within the first few weeks. The high expectations of the professors and coaches at this university constantly push each individual to reach and even exceed our own potentials. The opportunity to receive a world-class education, live in one of the most interesting cities in the world and compete for a national championship in a sport I’ve spent my entire life playing made Georgetown the obvious choice when deciding where to spend my collegiate career. Being a part of the Hoya Family doesn’t stop at being a member of a nationally recognized athletic team with 30 of my closest friends, but spans throughout the entire Georgetown community in multiple aspects of student life. I can already see that the opportunities here are endless, and a combination of hard work and perseverance is the key to success.

SITTING AT MY JuNIoR DAY visit in January 2009, we were doing a Q&A with some of the girls on the team. I already felt that Georgetown was the school for me, but when the question “why did you choose Georgetown” arose, one of the girl’s responses sold me. Among other things, the last thing she said was “I want to win a national championship.” I could sense the competitive nature and the desire to succeed among the team and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. The quality of the education and prestige of the university made my decision that much easier. As a freshman at Georgetown, I have already learned so much about myself and how hard work, perseverance and dedication allow you to achieve your goals. In order for a team to succeed, it has to be more than a group of talented individuals. From my team I have learned that support, belief and trust in each other are what allow us to perform at our full potential. I thank God every day for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Georgetown Lacrosse family.

BEING oNLY A fRESHMAN, Georgetown has already been a life-changing experience for me. I have grown so much in the little time that I have been here both as a player and as an individual. I chose Georgetown because the academic offerings along with the athletic opportunity it virtually unmatched anywhere in the country. I also fell in love with Georgetown because I wanted to be a part of the strong bond that this team has. The people that are a part of the women’s lacrosse program are not just my teammates and coaches, but already they have become my family. We work hard for one another and support one another everyday on and off the field. I have learned to put 100% into everything I do and that with hard work, heart and determination I have the ability to achieve whatever I put my mind to. I am grateful to be a part of such a highly competitive program and be able to be a part of a team that is willing to work hard and challenge themselves each and everyday both on the field and in the classroom. The people I have met and the bonds I have created with my teammates is something that I feel would not be attainable anywhere else.

2010 MARKED A MILESToNE in Georgetown University women’s lacrosse history. After an undefeated run through the BIG EAST regular season, the Hoyas made history winning the BIG EAST Tournament title, the first in program history. While a number of players took the spotlight throughout the season, in the end it was balanced scoring and team defense that brought a championship to the Hilltop. The Hoyas finished the season with a 13-6 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. Along the way, the Blue & Gray defeated five ranked teams, all conference opponents, to win back-to-back BIG EAST Regular Season Championships. In the conference tournament at Rutgers, Georgetown advanced to the championship game and took home the elusive title.

The Hoyas received a bid to the NCAA Tournament, their fifth in the last six years under Fried, and fell in a heartbreaking loss to Syracuse, a team the Blue & Gray had defeated twice during the previous weeks. Georgetown ranked eighth in the nation in the final IWLCA/Under Armour Poll and had three players earn All-America honors along with four all-region honorees. In the BIG EAST, Georgetown showed its balance with no individual player earning a major award but the team as a whole coming home with six All-BIG EAST honors including four players taking a spot on the First Team. Once again, Fried, along with his assistants, won its second-consecutive BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award marking the second award in the past two seasons. The Hoyas started 2010 with a solid showing against local-rival Johns Hopkins. The Blue & Gray posted a 15-9 victory in the home opener. After a tough loss at No. 1 Northwestern, the squad bounced back with

a 13-11 win at Florida on the second leg of a three-game spring break road trip. Unfor-tunately the momentum would not last as GU fell to three ranked teams, No. 6 Duke, No. 2 Maryland and No. 4 North Carolina. The brutal early-season schedule paved the way for success, however, as the Hoyas kept their heads up going into conference play. On a cold night in Pennsylvania, Georgetown put together a 20-7 win over BIG EAST-newcomer Villanova. The Blue & Gray seemed to be on the right track, but two days later the Hoyas lost a heartbreaker to No. 19 Princeton 15-14 in double over-time. While outsiders may have doubted the Hoyas after a 3-5 start, the team stayed positive entering the BIG EAST matchup against No. 14 Notre Dame. The previous

season, the Irish had defeated George-town at home in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship game. This year was differ-ent, however, as they put together a 12-10 team victory. The win sparked a record setting 10-game win streak that would stretch into the postseason as the Hoyas went from heart-breaking losses to one of the hottest teams in the nation. Georgetown defeated Connecticut at home 18-9 and went back out on the road to down Cincinnati 21-8 as well as Louisville 17-13. A 19-12 win against Rutgers kept the Blue & Gray perfect in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas closed out non-conference play with a 15-4 victory at Yale. Despite their success, two ranked teams stood in Georgetown’s way to win the BIG EAST Regular Season Title. Under the lights of Multi-Sport Field and on senior day, Georgetown battled through emotions and a tough first half against Loyola (Md.). After falling behind 11-4 well

into the second half, the Hoyas pulled off one of the most exciting and memorable finishes on the Hilltop, scoring five goals in less than four minutes and eventually forcing two overtime periods. The Hoyas looked to have the victory in overtime but an early celebration allowed the Greyhounds to score. Kaestner’s goal late in the second OT period sealed the 13-12 win and a share of the conference title. A trip to Syracuse, N.Y., stood between Georgetown and the title as the Blue & Gray battled the Orange in the final regular season game at the Carrier Dome. On CBS College Sports Georgetown dismantled the Syracuse defense to win 10-9 and claim the BIG EAST Regular Season title. Up next was the conference tournament hosted by Rutgers. The Hoyas entered as the top seed in an all-too-familiar situation. A rematch with fourth-seeded Loyola resulted in an 11-9 Georgetown win. However, the true test came against third-seeded Syra-cuse on Saturday in the championship. The Hoyas had a tough couple of days with both personal tragedies and academ-ics weighing heavily on their minds. But on gameday, the squad was focused looking for the elusive tournament championship. De-spite playing the Orange less than a week prior, Georgetown controlled the tempo from the start and didn’t let up to capture the 13-11 win and the first BIG EAST Tour-nament Championship in program history. The next day, the squad came together to watch the NCAA selection show seeing if its good fortune and 10-game win streak would continue. In a shocking move, the se-lection committee pitted the fourth-seeded Hoyas against conference-rival Syracuse, a team they had defeated the two previous weeks. Despite playing at home, beating a team three times in 14 days was not in the cards as the Orange used a big second-half run to dash Georgetown’s hopes of moving on. The Hoyas ended the season with a mark of 13-6 for another winning season and some program milestones. Postseason honors followed with Molly Ford, Ashby Kaestner and Logan McCraw all being named All-Americans. Sophomore Kelly Barnes was also a Regional All-Ameri-can and Jordy Kirr as well as Caitlin Formby joined the group as All-BIG EAST honorees. Georgetown’s success in 2010 can be attributed to a total team effort with every position playing an important role. Talented attackers, veteran midfielders and a versatile defensive group were important cogs in the greater scheme.

eRIKa GabRIelsen neUMann ‘89The opportunity to play lacrosse at Georgetown while simultaneously pursuing academic study at one of the leading schools in the country surpassed every life dream I had when I applied to the school. I never thought I could actually keep up and have it all – to push myself academically, athletically, socially and spiritually. But I did have it all - I was so impressed by the high goals and achievements of my peers that I pushed myself to higher standards. In many regards, Georgetown laid the groundwork for all my future goals at ever-higher standards.

KRIsTInRaneRI nIColInI ‘02Looking back on my years on the Hilltop, I am grateful for each experience that I had there but mostly for my team- I couldn’t imagine my life without them. Both on the field and in the classroom I was always challenged to reach my limits and then at that point I often realized that they hadn’t even been reached. I wouldn’t trade my four years at Georgetown for anything.

JessICa Walls beeRs ‘01Georgetown University was the best experience I could have ever imagined, it had everything I wanted: a very ‘city experience’, yet a beautiful, authentic college campus. Smart challenging people and classes, with a blast of a social life. The campus was the perfect size, manageable yet still grand. Playing lacrosse and field hockey I not only experienced great competition and successes, but I also made some of the best friends I could have asked for. Being on those teams contributed largely to the person I am

today. I would not trade going to GU for anything, quite frankly, I think it is the best overall university there is. Every time I am asked where I went to college, I love to see the impressed look on people’s faces, it makes me proud everyday. Having Georgetown on my resume has proven to be more golden than I ever even realized as a young student. It gets you places, plain and simple.

laURa faRIna ‘83I cannot imagine my Georgetown experience without athletics. In my freshman year, I played basketball as a walk-on and then moved from the court to the turf for three years of lacrosse. While my academic life was so rich (double majored in history and government), it is my passion for athletics that still connects me to the Hilltop. Cur-rently I serve on the Executive Board of Hoyas Un-limited and am working toward a masters (MPS) in sports industry management at Georgetown while working full time as a lawyer. I feel incredibly fortunate to be tied to Georgetown past, present and future.

MaRGo DoYle ‘94Georgetown offered everything I wanted in a college experience - a top tier lacrosse program, challenging academics, opportunities to get involved with the school through student government and a strong social life. Now, 15 years later, I am constantly reminded of how learning to balance all aspects of my college experience helped me in my professional career and personal life. I am proud to have represented Georgetown as an athlete. Through athletics, I felt that I was able to give something back to the school for all I had gained in my four years.

lIZ RYan ‘03Bleeding Hoya Blue is great. I hope I still have at least a blue tint in my veins. Playing lacrosse with my best friends and earning a diploma from a top school equaled a fun adventure. Each day presented a new athletic or academic challenge and an opportunity to laugh with teammates.

sHeeHan sTanWICK ’01I decided to spend four years on the Hilltop because I wanted to be challenged. The education I received at Georgetown goes far beyond the courses I took, it also includes invaluable lessons that I learned on the lacrosse field.

When I was first looking at colleges, one of the things that attracted me to Georgetown was its reputation for both academics and athletics; however, equally important was the opportunity to be part of a building program. When I was a freshman at Georgetown, our team goal was to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program’s history. We accomplished this feat, and it was a thrilling experience! By my senior season, our team goal was to play in the National Championship. Though we ultimately lost the championship in sudden-death overtime, I was part of something extremely special. I was a part of a team that believed they could win, and worked incredibly hard to do so.

My Georgetown education has opened so many doors in my career and personal life. The desire to be the best is something that was ingrained as a student-athlete at Georgetown, and something that lives with me today.

With 30 years under its belt, The BIG EAST Conference continues on a path of success in and out of the athletic arena. The goals have always been the same. The league wants and expects to compete at the highest level and does so with integrity and sportsmanship. The commendable performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are the indicators of the league’s proud tradition of success. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2009-10 academic year will mark the conference’s fifth straight with the same 16-member group, the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. In 2008-09, BIG EAST student-athletes again succeeded on the national stage. The Connecticut women’s basketball team won its sixth national championship by defeating conference foe Louisville in an all-BIG EAST NCAA title game. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team reached the NCAA championship game and the Syracuse field hockey squad advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Three BIG EAST women’s cross country teams finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships. West Virginia was fourth followed by Villanova in sixth place and Georgetown in ninth. Individually in women’s sports, Providence’s Danette Doetzel won the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Connecticut’s Maya Moore was the conference’s sixth winner of the Wade Trophy as the top player in women’s basketball. Notre Dame’s Kerri Hanks won the Hermann Trophy, the top award in women’s soccer. On the men’s side, Connecticut and Villanova advanced to the Final Four in basketball. The 2008-09 campaign was arguably the best men’s basketball season in the history of the BIG EAST with the league setting NCAA standards with three No. 1 tournament seeds, four teams in the round of the Elite Eight and five in the Sweet 16. The St. John’s men’s soccer team reached the NCAA College Cup be-fore losing in the national semifinals. BIG EAST football has maintained its high profile and its reputation as a balanced group. Seven of the league’s eight squads were nationally ranked or received votes in the national polls in 2008. Cincinnati was the league champion. The BIG EAST, a charter member of the Bowl Championship Series, has won three of its last four BCS bowl games. West Virginia, Louisville and Connecticut also have won or

shared league crowns over the past four seasons. The BIG EAST has continued to produce student-athletes who were at the forefront of athletic and academic achievement. In 2008-09, 19 BIG EAST players were chosen to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams, including eight first-team selections. Nearly 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 34 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one fourth of all television households in the U.S. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 26 national championships in six different sports and 126 student-athletes have won individual national titles. The BIG EAST has enjoyed tremendous basketball success, especially in this decade. In 2008-09, the BIG EAST produced four of the eight Final Four teams in men’s and women’s basketball. It was only the second time in NCAA history that one conference placed that many Final Four teams in the same season. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 11 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken six of the last 10 NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. In 2009-10, the BIG EAST will add men’s lacrosse to its growing list of sports, which will increase its total to 24 sport championships. The first women’s golf championship was

held in the spring of 2003. Women’s lacrosse and rowing were added in 2001. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has been fortunate to have outstanding leadership. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Dave Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. For 2009-10, the BIG EAST will undergo one significant change. Tranghese stepped down from his position on June 30, 2009. John Marinatto, who has served as senior associate commissioner, has moved into the Commissioner’s chair. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past six years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. More than 550 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals in each of the last six summer Olympiads. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 athletes.
