2011-12

TRADITION IN TRANSITION: Minot State is in its third season of a four-year transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. MSU advanced to Year Three Provisional status in July and is expected to complete the transition in July 2012. Minot State was selected to join the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2012-13.

RECORDS: Minot State begins the 2011-12 season this weekend. LU is 3-9 on the season at the start of the week.

COACHES CORNER: Minot State’s Sheila Green Gerding enters her 17th season as head coach of the Beavers. She is just nine wins shy of 300 for her career, sporting a lofty 291-183. John Kreiner is in his ninth season at LU, sporting a 68-86 overall record.

FOLLOW THE BEAVERS: The game is broadcast locally on KCJB 910-AM with Scott Kittell calling the play-by-play. There will be radio coverage only during Friday’s game. Live audio can be accessed online at (www.kcjb.com). MSU provides live video and live stats as well as links to live audio and a MSU photo gallery all at (www.msubeavers.com).

RANKINGS: Neither team was ranked in their respective division.

RECENT HISTORY: Minot State lost to Valley City State in the second round of the Dakota Athletic Conference playoffs to end the 2010-11 season. The Thunderwolves fell three times on a west coast trip last week.

OVERALL SERIES: The Beavers and Thunderwolves have played twice in women’s basketball, splitting two games in the early 1980s. MSU defeated Lakehead 75-72 in 1980 and lost 65-57 in 81 in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

NOTING THE THUNDERWOLVES: Lakehead University has played 12 games so far this season and will finished with 15 games in the preseason after a road trip to Bemidji State Thursday and Minot State Friday and Saturday… Leading rebounder Lindsey Druery has been nursing an injury, but is expected to play in the games this weekend… The Thunderwolves went 19-23 last season overall, but had a solid conference campaign with a 13-9 record… Last season’s top scorer Tasia McKenna is one of the team’s assistant coaches this season.

RETURNING THE BULK OF THE TEAM: Minot State University not only returns four of its top five scorers, but does so with three of the team’s top four post players. MSU’s Australian Connection Carly Boag and Christina Boag (Sophomores, Tam-worth, Australia) along with Katie Hardy (So., Fairview, N.D.) are three of the strongest players on the Beavers roster as well as three of the four players on the team at 6-feet or better. Carly Boag was the team’s leading scorer returning at 10.75 points per game as well as th leading rebounder at 6.5.

MILESTONE WATCH: After chasing the team’s single season wins record last year, the Beavers have another milestone within reach this season. Only, this year’s is a bit more personal. Head coach Sheila Green Gerding is just nine wins away from 300 – all at Minot State. Green Gerding has had only two losing seasons at Minot State and has never failed to reach at least 13 wins in a season under Green Gerding. MSU has hit 18 or more wins 10 times while she was coaching and has won 20 or more five times, including four times in the past five seasons.

CASHING IN THE FREE ONES: Minot State was stellar at the free-throw line last season as a team, knocking down 74.2 percen. MSU scored 422 of its 2278 points from the line. MSU has three players returning who averaged higher than 80 per-cent from the charity stripe in 2010-11, led by Michaela Larson (So., G, Hutchinson, Minn.) who went 14 of 17 from the line. Sacarra Molina (Jr., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) was 81.9 percent effective (77-94) and Katie Hardy missed just 10 free throws all season (44-54, 81.5 percent).

TOUGH TASK: Minot State’s independent year is filled with road trips and tough opponents as MSU plays preseason top 25 Alaska Anchorage in Alaska as well as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason No. 3 , 4 and 6 teams Augustana, Minnesota State Moorhead and Northern State all on the road.

Sheila Green Gerding is in her 17th season at the helm of the Minot State University women’s basketball pro-gram.

Green Gerding is just nine wins away from 300 as she comes into the 2011-12 season with an overall record of 291-183, all at Minot State.

She is the 11th player under the direction of Green Gerding to be named to the list.

During her 16 seasons at MSU, the Beavers have advanced to the NAIA Division II Quarterfinals twice, cap-tured two NDCAC postseason cham-pionships, won one Dakota Athletic

Conference tournament champion-ship and a share of a NDCAC regular season title.
